A 10-1 season in just the second year of varsity competition.  The Hornets have done extremely well for such a young program.  SGC began play on the varsity level in 2011.  Over that period of time South Gibson has a record of 68 wins and 43 losses for a winning percentage of 61%. The Hornets have had 8 winning seasons and 2 losing seasons.

Looking at other teams in 7-4A:

    Crockett Co. - first season - 1983;   overall record/winning percentage - 226-197, 53%;    22 winning seasons;   16 losing seasons.
    North Side - first season - 1947;   overall record/winning percentage - 416-322-7, 56%;   47 winning seasons;   25 losing seasons.
    Obion Co. - first season - 1961;  overall record/winning percentage - 213-385-8, 36%;   19 winning seasons;   41 losing seasons
    Milan - first season - 1922;   overall record/winning percentage - 684-398-23, 63%;   69 winning seasons;   30 losing seasons
    Haywood - first season - 1912;   overall record/winning percentage -  681-397-32, 63%;   74 winning seasons;   31 losing seasons

I'm going to carry off of BPM's post about how EH shaped SGC and this one as well.

SGC 10-0 schedule was my sophomore year of high school. It was amazing. But, in hindsight, they did not play the toughest schedule. We (though I am not in the Medina community anymore since we are in past tense I will use we) avoided Covington and Dyersburg in a 10 team district. The three non-district games were West Carroll, JCS and TCA. Probably cant fault the Hornets for that though. It is there first varsity schedule as a program, so its a big risk to go schedule eight win teams each week.

After losing to EH, SGC took a much tougher rout. The new district meant playing a full district schedule, and the idea was to have SGC battle tested by the first round of the playoffs. The schedule:

    Camden

    Chester Co.

    Westview

    TCA (Kyle Akin era)

    Obion County

    Milan

    USJ

    Crockett County (Johnny Jones era)

    Northside

    Dyersburg

(These were the two losing seasons for SGC)

The 2013 team played Northside real close 28-24 and reached the playoffs to play Hickman County. If I recall Airan Reed was not available for the game.

The 2014 team went 2-8, wins over Obion County and USJ.  Four losses (at Camden, at Chester Co.,  Westview and Milan) were all by one possession (one possession from 6-4 and a playoff spot)

We had to bad losses that season (to senior Kyle Akin/TCA and senior Johnny Jones/Crockett Co.)

Nine opponents from that 2014 team made the playoffs. six made the second round and two to past that. Most of those teams were eliminated by another team that SGC played

I jokingly tell people that that was the best 2-8 team in the state, but in all seriousness it probably was.

My point is, even when SGC had a bad record they were still a good team, searching for an identity and something to prove, but a tough opponent.

M.O.M. mentioned earlier that SGC lacked athletes on paper, but made up for it with work ethic, fight and good coaching. That was the identity of the SGC teams back to 2011. the 2012 team (to my knowledge) had the most athletes of a Hornet team (as well as a very big line).

Also, Nick Newsome (former Dyersburg and APSU football player) was an assistant on that SGC team. He is a grad assistant at Georgia Tech now

And who was that? I’m well aware they were in 2A prior. Huntingdon had them down bad and lost 2004. Just Bc u have a lot of post doesn’t mean anything. Who was the last public school in 3A to beat Alcoa.

Fulton was 3A in 2006 when they beat 2A Alcoa. Alcoa lost a game a few years back to Corbin (KY) that had around a 900 enrollment if I remember (so 4A in TSSAA). Lost to a 4A Greeneville team in 2011

I just wanted to compare the AP and the Max*Preps polls. Sorry about the format issue with the latter. I didn't know how to fix it.

Max*Preps has PC as the #1 team in 3A, ahead of Alcoa. I thought that was really strange, given that Alcoa beat PC in last year's championship and that PC has not played yet in 2020.

    Discuss,.

I think Max*Preps is probably all algorithm, since it says rankings. Preset codes that decide who goes where. Thats the only way I could imagine having PC at 1. As for the AP, of course as we know, is voted by statewide media.

    Just a hunch

Sorry, I remember you posting in the thread, and I thought it was you who made the statement.  I'm old and senile, so please forgive me.  However, whoever made the post seems to have been spot on.  I haven't seen you on here in a long time.  It's nice to see you back.

No worries. Just wanted to clarify.

I remember that season, I was a sophomore. The team went 10-0 and beat Milan in Milan. At that time, we had a big senior class and athletes across the field and a big o line. As well as the Walden brothers. Everyone was involved and excited following the season and without past seasons to compare to nobodyreally new how good we were.

I wonder how that SGC team would do against the current ones. I new with how well coached the team was and disciplined the staff had the players they would be a competitive team even in the down years. Senior year SGC went 2-8, but was still a tough win.

I don't thing I would still say they are a powerhouse, but still a good football program with things to be excited about.

Haywood has been a penalty plagued team for years.  Coach Smith and crew have done an excellent job in cutting the penalties this year, but the penalty problem definitely reared its ugly head in this game.  I commend the Tomcats, not for the penalties, but for their perseverance in overcoming those penalties.

Haywood has a whole slew of good backs, but the Tomcats were playing w/o the services of one of their best backs.  Again, I commend the team for stepping up and filling that void.

WOW, UNBELIEVABLE, where’s the defense?  A lot of words and expressions could be used to describe this game.  I would say that it’s a shame either team had to lose.  It was an amazing game, and both teams played their hearts out.  I tip my hat to South Gibson.  You have a first class program, and good luck to the Hornets going forward.

I have forgotten his username, but several years ago, a young SG band student posted that South Gibson was a new powerhouse in West Tennessee football.  I, along with a lot of others, laughed at his post.  I apologize for that.  South Gibson has definitely established itself as one of the better teams in rural West Tennessee.

What a gutsy call by Coach Smith and his crew.  Not that they need my approval, but I agree with the call, and I would have agreed with it even if the 2 point attempt had failed. You play to win.  Congratulations Tomcats!

    Hey there,

Just to clarify. It was another poster who said SGC was a new powerhouse, not me. I was in the thread, and said they'll be a good team year in-year out. But not a powerhouse.

  6. This is a story I did for The All State at APSU over former Fulton star Kentel Williams. I thought some of you all might would have wanted to see it. Williams averaged 25.4 yards per carry in APSU's 69-13 win earlier this year. Great football player, and an awesome guy to get to talk to.

    vs South Gibson

    RE won 26-14 (playoffs)

    Cov won 49-21 (season)

It's hard to see much of a pattern there. RE did much better vs Melrose, and Covington did much better vs SGC. Results vs Bolivar were very similar.

Covington scored on SGC turnovers while RE didn’t. The pharaohs turned the ball over a few times vs SGC as well. Covington is my pick to win this game with or with RE turnovers
