  2. The McCallie kid at 138 (Ethan Dendy) wouldn't be a factor if they are discussing the Baylor vs Father Ryan dual meet which is what I think this post was meant to discuss.

Yes true statement, my mistake.  I took it as "a clear cut favorite"  in the state but he was talking about just this dual. thanks

  4. My first name can also be found on my profile if you'd like to follow your own advice and take a look. Funny you say that to me but you were the first to ask who I was.

Here we go with the December vs February excuse again (made famous by FR), implying that even if Hamilton beat him twice in December he couldn't in February because he did not improve through the course of the season like your boy did? The different weight class excuse is irrelevant since they both were at a higher weight and then they both dropped a weight class. I think I heard that Hamlton would/could/should have majored him in Dec but he had an ingrown toenail.

I'm flattered that you consider my posts fact instead of opinion. Of course I do try to base my opinions on supporting evidence instead of biased wishful thinking.

Yes, we agree to disagree, I do not think he can beat 'everyone' in the state at his weight class (re-worded). Two losses to D1 runner-up, odds are in favor of both the D1 finalists. One loss and I might consider it.

No harm intended with all of this, just disagreeing with a post because of results. Don't get bent out of shape about it, nothing personal at all. Its easy to misinterpret tone and intent in text. If we had state champs instead of division champs then none of this would ever be discussed. Congrats on a fine season, your boy is def one of the top 3 in the state at 170.

    :)

  5. Get your purple panties out of a wad and read the thread again. You've obviously taken offense and what I posted in reply out of context.

The original post I responded to stated that your boy would beat anyone in the state. He lost to Hamilton twice this season so I disagree with that statement. That's all I meant by my post.

I did not mean to suggest that he could not beat anyone in the state and I can see how it could have been interpreted that way because of the word usage. If you read the post I quoted and responded to then any logical reader should be able to see that.

I wasn't name calling or attacking your kid at all, just disagreeing with the statement that he can beat anyone in the state because he had 2 chances to beat Hamilton and couldn't. No ifs and buts and common opponent results, all that means squat when they've faced each other twice in the same season. Don't matter if it was 1 point wins both times or pins both times, a wins a win. In this case 2 wins. The rest is just excuses. Doesn't take an expert to figure this out.

You didn't seem to have an issue when someone talked him up to being the best in the state without any supporting evidence so don't whine when someone else provides evidence to suggest otherwise. I'm surprised a seasoned wrestler like yourself is so thin-skinned, especially on a TN wrestling forum.

I don't feel the need to sign off since my name is and has always been my screen name Mr Seahawk or "whoever you are". Have a nice day.

We both seemed to be a little thin skinned Mr. Comback :) it's like I'm listening to my kids Tn long horn...."ooh you got him".    Your right Mr. West (first name?) your wording was interpreted like you worded it.  Sorry if I interpreted wrong.  I'm good on all this.  We can biasly agree to disagree all day long.  I do think it's pretty simplistic in my own wresting experience to say a kid that meets in dec is the same kid at a different weight class 2 months later and that he would for sure win or lose again. predicting on something that can't be predicted on wrestlers that are so close.   that's like saying Father Ryan is the same team in Dec as they are in February.  I think there is validity to the stats at 170.  Again, agree to disagree.  If you are going to say something as fact then expect push back.  That seems to be the nature of these threads. By the way you can call me Tommy.  I like it to stay informal. And if you were ever curious as to who I was at any time you could have looked  at my profile and found my full name.  It's not hidden.  4 more boys to go so I'll be around for while. I'm sure we may talk again.  Who knows.... the next topic we might be on the same side of the coin.

  6. 170 Hagey cannot beat anyone in TN obviously because D1 runner-up Hamilton has TWO wins this season over him and Kennedy had a very close win over Hamilton in the state finals. The top 2 D1 would probably both beat Hagey. Plus, Seagraves (Baylor 170) never wrestled Hamilton so he couldn't have destroyed him as you suggested.

D1 wins 170 and up, 8 matches total with 4 pins.

I try to stay out of all the guess work, name calling, wearing out kids about how good or not good we think they are and  all the expert opinions since everyone "has one".. is one.... and those people have "opinions" too! Lots of bias and ignorance on a topic no one knows the answers to....... This is wrestling and anything can happen especially when you are talking about the top tear of wrestlers.  With that said, and I try not to push back on silly matters like this but Mr. west 40, who ever you are if you want to call out John Hagey and be so sure he can't beat anyone in TN you should tell the entire story.  Early in the season Hamilton beat  him at Cleveland when they were wrestling 182- score 2-1 on a controversial call and yes He beat him again the next day when they met again.  He won in overtime.  Far cry from a dominant opponent.  Hence at 170 where the meat of the season happened your boy Hamelton squeaked by Alan D’Alessandro 1-0 in the state tournament .  John at 170 handled him pretty well with a 10-5 win.  Hamelton beat Rippy 3-0 at 170.  John  was beating him by at least 5 when Rippy injury defaulted to him. Play the "what if " game with that. At 170 1 kid beat him in TN and John came back and beat him twice when it counted.  He won every tournament Ryan was in but Father Ryan wrestles such a weak schedule that's probably why he won them.  I 'm not as smart as you so I don't know who would win what match until they wrestle and I'm not sure how you do but you obviously do.  I would just say I wouldn't bet against John Hagey.  But I'm admitting I'm biased.  Walthall match in the semi finals last year is a great example of you never know.  I guess you would have lost that bet.  I think it is disappointing when discussions become so biased and one sided and ignorant. I'm a little disappointed in myself for getting sucked into this one.  I'm not really a believer in throwing down a gauntlet and mine is just an opinion not a statement like  Mr. Cleveland West.

By the way Parker beats div 1 state champ. he will be a 4 timer. great kid, great wrestler in my opinion :)

    admittedly and biasly yours

    Tommy Hagey

    Wrestler for the IRISH 1980-1983

  7. It is disappointing that the State tournament for DII is weaker than many tournaments they go to throughout the year.  You generally have great battles in the finals but not a whole lot before that not with standing an upset  here or there.  There is something not right with a tournament where if your opponent has to forfeit due to an injury, skin issues etc before it even starts and. you could lose every match and still get a medal.  Who would want a medal like that.    There is a difficult struggle I see on these boards when it comes to quality vs. quantity and which should come first.  I think there needs to be a balance and that seems to be hard to find. Dii definitely struggles with quantity. Its not fun having to wrestle a guy 4 weeks in a row whether he is any good or not.

  8. I find it interesting that we complain (me included) about the cow palace and how the tournament needs to move.  It's horrible etc. as people would say or they didn't have decent pictures of the the tournament matches etc.  but we are ok with crappy medals for these kids.  The venue is for us parents not for the wrestlers. We don't like not having a good seat to watch the matches, the terrible bathrooms, the fact the our kids don't have the atmosphere we think they deserve, etc. That is all legit complaints.  But, The reality is the kids venue is the mat and the mat is the same wherever it is laid. The medals are the one tangible reward/reminder of their hard work.  To say these kids don't wrestle for the medal is too simplistic.  The medal is part of the experience and will be the only thing they have from that event in their lives 30 years from now.  The medals are insignificant now because they are insignificant looking.  My son has showed me some great school tournament medals he was excited to win so how can our STATE medal be acceptable when it by far is made of such lessor quality than most if not all other tournaments in our state.  Last regarding growing this sport.  Crappy medals are not going to help the matter. Nor will giving medals out to anyone who has a pulse.  A kid in Div 2 gets hurt and can't make it to the state tourn then potentially the kid he got bracketed with first round can get a 6th place medal and not win a match.  This isn't little league soccer.  Quality over quantity should be the motto for wrestling.   At least take Div2 down to 4 medals instead of 6... but i digress.  i guess that's another topic.

  9. Dear Mr. Ref,  The one that did matches in Div2 on friday night.  Please stop talking to the crowd when you miss an obvious locking hands and they let you know it.  By the way I didn't have a dog in the hunt in this match or the one at the Cleveland Duals but what caught my eye both times is your reaction to the fans and the fact you really did miss those calls.   Don't justify your calls it just assures us all that you were wrong again.  There are few things a ref can do that is more unprofessional than reacting to the audience.  It tells me more than anything that you are not focused on the match at hand and that's why so many of these kids get the shaft.

  10. I think medal so mean a lot to these kids.  Who on this thread that placed in the state tournament doesn't still have his medal?  I have mine from 30 years ago.  I almost hate to show my son as he placed higher than i did but my medals are 3 times as big.  And yes the region medal was a joke too.  There was a day when the state tournament and even the region was a big deal and treated that way but I'm a 81-83 year guy and that was a long time ago.
