  1. I'd say that's on the money. Of course a big issue in the youth numbers is that the Hornets program has gone under. It would help a lot if both the Hornets and the Bulldogs had full 10-11 year old teams. I'm not big on the younger groups. There's really no benefit in kids playing football younger than 4-5 grade. It just for parents, pictures and lots of bad things. If we had two 10-11 teams with at least 25 each and then a solid middle school team we could improve. The middle school team took a big step last season. I hope that can continue.

Exactly. I hope a new coach can inspire 10-11yr old kids but I don't think it's all on the high school coach if they decide not to play. I hope the best for Grundy but forcing a good man out over a win or two a year I don't agree with.

  2. cor·rup·tion

     noun \kÉ™-ˈrÉ™p-shÉ™n\

: dishonest or illegal behavior especially by powerful people (such as government officials or police officers)

I cannot prove anything it's just an opinion but I do believe there have been powerful people that have been dishonest in this process. Not anything illegal by no means but dishonest possibly.

  3. Who was the high school coach who should have made sure his feeder program never got so low on numbers that it had to shut down? Well it dont matter lets blame other people, thats what them boys were best at anyway.

Well my good man truth be told the numbers for that particular age group were always low even in pee-wee. That is something that the neither the best high school coach nor middle school coach can fix in a small community. No matter who gets hired at this point it won't take all that long to determine if forcing a good man out will result in a dramatic increase in wins.

So until then we can just sit back and watch as the truth comes to light, was this an honest attempt at taking Grundy from good to great or just another example of small town politics and corruption.

  4. Just a little history if you will......

Longest tenures in Grundy football history -

    John A. Anderson 10 years 1926-35

    Chris Pickett 8 years 1989-96

    Nick Bryant 6 years 2009-14

    John A. Anderson 5 years 1942-46

    Ed Cantrell 5 years 1966-70

    Horace Moore 4 years 1951-54

    Roy Ferguson 4 years 1955-58

    Doug Pittenger 4 years 1974-77

Moose Bouldin 4 years 1981-84 (all 4 of my years...9-31...yes I'm still bitter..)

    Ken Colquette 4 years 2001-04

Note- Greg Brewer had a total of 5 years. 1998-00 and 2005-06

And - Chris Pickett had another season for a total of 9. The year he died 2007.

Not sure if any of this matters at all in the discussion but I figured it was worth throwing in.

    DL.

So what your saying here is that we haven't had a coach stay here for more than 10 yrs. since before WW2 and they just ran off a guy that loved it here, went to the playoffs every year, and ran a clean program. Hmm. That sounds like the stability a good coach would want to walk into doesn't it?

  5. It is sad to see how unrealistic expectations from some as well as unfair pressures from those that know the least can affect small town high school football teams. We played Grundy in the first round of the playoffs this year. Our schools are very similar in a lot of ways. Disappointing that Coach Bryant leaves the Yellow Jackets. There is a lot to be said for having a home town guy in charge and letting him manage the program. Not every 3A team in the state is like Alcoa. Most have ups and downs with numbers and talent level. Going to be a lot of 4-6, 5-5, and 6-4 seasons that are surrounded by some worse and some better seasons.

I think it is better to leave the coaches in place so long as they are doing the things the right way. Very unfair to base the total performance just on wins and losses.

It won't be long till Grundy will be longing for a 5-5 season and a coach that treats the kids as well as the Bryants do.
