Assistant takes over top spot for Jackson County football

Thomas Cagle has been elevated to the head coaching position at Jackson County following the resignation last month of Sean Loftis, who left to join the coaching staff at Gallatin.

Cagle, 28, served as an assistant under Loftis last fall after spending the previous two seasons at East Nashville.

“We had a good foundation with Coach Loftis before he left,†Cagle said. “I know the things that were planned and talked about, and a lot of that’s going to make my job easier. I’m excited to build on that foundation.â€

Jackson County finished 7-5 last fall, losing in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs after an opening-round win over Eagleville. It marked the fifth consecutive playoff appearance for the Blue Devils reached the playoffs.

Loftis, a 1997 Jackson County graduate, went 34-33 over six years.

“It’s definitely going to be a rebuilding season,†Cagle said. “We lost a lot of seniors, most of them along the offensive and defensive lines. We’re trying to find the guys that are going to step up and take the responsibility of solidifying both sides of the ball for us.â€

Jackson County will be among 27 football programs that underwent a coaching change from the end of the 2014 campaign to the start of the 2015 season.

  2. I think the District looks pretty strong outside of Pickett.   JC is hitting the ball well and as long as they continue to pitch well they should take the district.

Will be interesting to see how they do against Livingston tomorrow and Friday.

  3. So would you say that Jackson co is better than sequatchie county? I have heard comparisons to Grundy with the blue devils.

I think JC defense is better than Dunlap, offensively similar.   I will say that I have not seen a ST like JC in a long time.  They do not have a great return but they get after the block opportunities and play solid in coverage.

Don't count out their K/P either, he is having a great year.

  4. Yea the former number 3 season is over. They were notlucky enough to play team like JC in the 1st round but yall are still welcome to play number 3 in the spring if yall want

Why would they be lucky to play JC?   You act like this is a scrub game.  JC is in the playoffs because they earned it, same as any other team.   You never count a team out or overlook an opponent.

I hope the JC team does read all this, because you MC fans are adding fuel to a fire MC may not be able to put out.

  5. if it doesn't get way out it hand it's because Ross chose for it not too. I just took another look at your schedule. Watertown shutting you out and several other teams holding you to1 score doesn't bode well for you.

Well, what you may also not know is that the starting QB and RB, who also play DB, were taken out during the Upperman game.  (Which JC was winning until then).   They didn't get back until Gordonsville.   Watertown was playing for a shot at the playoffs on Senior night, at their last home game.   This is tough for any team to overcome, not just JC vs Watertown.

  6. If you are the QB please make sure and talk to us before Friday. You might not be able to type by Saturday. Once more. I am not a Marion fan, but this won't be close. Marion has played a soft schedule, but they have played 7 or 8 teams better than Jackson County this season.

Man, everyone is really riding MC's jock strap.   I have been fortunate enough to see a lot of 2A football this year.   Got to watch Marion and Jackson Co.   It is going to be a tougher match-up than anyone on here is predicting.  Can it get out of hand?  Absolutely.   Will it?  I am not sure.

  7. I am not naive enough to say we will hold on to Ross long term, but I wouldn't think he would leave for a program like franklin co. He can and will eventually do way better than theirs. Hopefully he falls in love with Marion county though. He turned down a way higher paying gig to take this one so I am not sure it is all about money either. Maybe eventually it will be.

Back to the game, if Jackson county was hoping Marion would overlook them it sounds as though they have messed that up. Seems like lots of trash talking on social media from what I have been told. On a brighter note, it is a good thing we aren't playing them at their place. Word is that they haven't lost a home playoff game in 33+ years..........

cute, I guess since they have a losing streak on the road, they are overdue for a win.

  8. Those linebackers better play lower than they did this past Friday or the little 5'9 running back named Zeman will have a field day with em. Hope those boys are in good shape. How man Jackson co players play both ways? What kind of offense do they run. I have asked that before but I didn't know if it was a secret or not.......lol

The offense seems a mix between spread and power from the games I saw.   They do not need to sub very often.

Those boys have played the whole season on both sides of the ball., they are in shape, and I bet ready for the MC team.  No one has given this team any credit all year long.  Everyone talks about the other team in every match-up.   Well, keep on talking, they will keep playing football.

  9. Jackson Co defense is a lot better than anyone on here is giving credit for.  These boys play hard and physical.  This game will not be the "blowout" everyone is claiming.  I do not see the Marion Co. defense just shutting out this teams offense either.  This will be another weak of smash mouth football, nothing cute.

I think JCHS pulls off the upset in a close game.   Not going to predict the score cause it could go high or low.

  10. . Have not seen JC, but 14-13 win vs RBS and 23-6 vs Clay is about all I need to know. Again, if UHS plays like they did first half at GHS or Monterey it will be a running clock. If they play like the second half at GHS, will be a down to the wire game. I say somewhere in between, 2-3 td's UHS.

RBS is a lot bigger and tougher than people realize.  I also saw where JC won 23-6 against Clay, but I heard they had a transfer at QB and the kid has a cannon.  I have seen Upperman and JC this year, both teams are physical and athletic.  Will be a great game to see this Friday.  We will simply have to agree to disagree on the outcome.  I can see it going both ways, but not because one team is just that much better than the other.  This will be a close game.

  11. I don't see that happening. I think this is much like LA-MC or SC-YI.....bigger build up than the game will be. If the Bees play like the first half verse GHS and like they did verse Monterey...will be ugly. I say they play somewhere in between, 2-3 td win for UHS.

Have you watched Jackson County?  Sounds like everyone is just speculating because of what Upperman WAS last year.  I think it is going to be a fight between both teams.  I also saw where someone said Jackson has Monteray next week, and that will affect the team.  Upperman has York... you don't think they have that in the back of their minds?  This game is going to be a lot closer than anyone on here thinks.

      Thaks for the information!

  13. I am moving to Cookeville and I was wondering if there are any assistant High School coach positions opening in the area.   I have teacher certification, with 2 years coaching at the high school level.  I can be more specific on the phone or through e-mail as to where I coached, what I coached, what certifications I have, and coaching philosophies.

Looking for either faculty, if teaching position is an option, or non-faculty.

Here is an email to contact me, STcoach87@hotmail.com,

or you can give me contact information in a reply.

I look forward to hearing from someone.

(thanks Coach T admin for the information.)
