  1. First- I agree as a whole the current crop of athletes have less work eithic than previous generations and more distractions. I wouldn't use a sweeping generalization and say every kid in region one is working hard everyday. Every kid in every other region isn't working hard either. But I don't think you imply that they are. They are working smarter and they are more organized. I get it.

But there are those that are working hard in this region and they will make thier bones and lead by example. This is not supposition it is fact. I witness it personally. It's our job to pass the work eithic on to them. agreed?

Second- Dumb comments are water across a ducks back and shoudnt result in additional dumb comments that marginalizes this region (no matter how inflamatory)

The kids deserve respect because a) they are kids B) because they are participating in the greatest sport on the planet and without thier particpation this sport would die c) this is region is appalachia; "some" are literally doing it with NO support, No money and No understanding from parents and peers as to "why" . This is not Gwinnett county Georgia (ARCHER) or Alabaster, Alabama (THOMPSON). Doesn't mean they can't succeed just some have more obstacles than others.

Third- I agree 100%... production, results and success are the currency by which respect is EARNED. If not everyone would have it.

We are the underdogs and frankly that's how I like for others to view us. It provides the element of surpise. It keeps you hungry for success. And makes the victories that much more sweet.

I do agree and that's what you are suppose to do if you are involved with a program. Been there and done that myself.

I get that not everyone works hard, but if someone doesn't work hard, it makes the entire team worse. Been there and experience that myself as well. I'm not saying they are all college wrestlers, but I've been in a few rooms in a high school and college and there are only two things that really separate them, work ethic and never giving up. They don't give up a takedown, they fight until they are taken down no matter what.

I have also been around when money doesn't get tossed wrestlings way with football, basketball, band, whatever. You have to start somewhere and make it work, not put blame on money.

The underdog thing in my mind is a double edge sword. I'll leave it at that.

I'm not saying the kids aren't working hard, I'm saying that we aren't doing all we can so we can't say that we are.

    Sound ok?

  2.

The only thing you hear is could and should, but there is never really any action. That needs to change consistently for anyone to change their mind about this region[/quote

Never any action? Bro these wrestlers are the unsung heroes, the underdogs the ones everyone discounts and still they persist... They work thier tails off day in and day out... Out of their love for the sport and belief in themselves...

There is no truer measure of dedication than that.

Nothing I would like better than the bask in the limelight of favor but guess what? It don't matter. Favor is fleeting, prejudice and fickle... And it does not define you. There are to many people in this region with a deep love of the sport and understanding of what it takes to succeed to not take them seriously. If the rest of the state makes that mistake then it is to our advantage.

When they succeed it will be made all the more sweeter because no one thought they could do it.

They have the heart to make it happen and they will.

First you are lying to yourself if you think that every kid in your region is working their butt off everyday. It's a quality missing in that generation.

Second I wasn't saying that the wrestlers are talking, it's the dumb comments on here that get your kids disrespected.

I think the kids do work hard, just not the level to be where chat is as a whole. In order to get respected, production is key in postseason.

  3. I think we could have upwards of 6 medalists. There may not be alot of depth but there is definatley talent. Hurley, Hudgens, Bagley, Frye, Begely, Broyles, Vaughn, Williams and thats just to name a few of our top dogs. If they all wrestle to their potential at the State Tournament people should be very weary.

The only thing you hear is could and should, but there is never really any action. That needs to change consistently for anyone to change their mind about this region

  4. I said boatman is a stud. I could care less about football. You can't even compare football to wrestling. I thought you might be from Greenville. We won your GIT tournament this year with a team full of freshman and sophomores.

Winning an individual tournament means nothing. You can have a couple good kids and have everyone else average and win

  5. Now before you bash Greeneville too much lets remember a couple things. 1 we still make the playoffs and do something in football unlike some teams Jefferson so many wrestlers were in their first week on the mat. 2. There were 3 starters that did not even wrestle that match at all. 3. Greeneville has probably 4 or 5 top 2 seeds if still in AAA region 1 - Jon, Vance, Carlson, and Knight for sure. How many Jeff got? Come on dude average? Really? You should know some facts before saying a team is average. Claiming an early season victory by 1 is your best? Wow.

Thanks Baller. All I'm saying is that if you take an above average team or even average team out, you lose depth which makes the region worse. Period. Even Cleveland is missing chat central and hixson

  6. We still beat them. Whether you win by 1 or 100. It goes down as a win either way.

You expect to beat "Average" teams by more than 1. Especially when you are "superior" to them. Also, if they don't make a region better that means they can't compete. If they can compete then they make a region better end of story.

  7. Seymour and Greenville are just average teams. Nothing to get excited about. Greenville has one "great" wrestler John Boatman. Seymour is just average at best. Greenville was a really good team in the 80's and early 90's so was morristown east. Now...just average

Well then so is Jeff County since they only beat an "Average" team by 1 (Greeneville). If you say they are average then your region is awful or that good and we know it's not the second

  8. Who left to go to a/aa that's making our aaa region so weak? I hope your not going to say Greenville leaving made it weak.

Seymore is not in our region anymore, Greeneville, SE. It's not just the region. It's the entire state. The region was weak before A/AA left. Oh and the 4 losses Greeneville had was a 1 point loss to Jeff County, 2x to PF and Halls. Saying that Greeneville left means nothing, then you are wrong.

  9. I think you are catching on Nobody. The answer is 2.

I was never off. So your point of 4 placing isn't that special especially with a lot of talent gone. In order to be the best you have to beat the best and they aren't beating anyone if you take out some of the people in the weight that are better than the ones who place. Could be one of the weaker state tournaments in history.

Blackknight I realize the argument but small schools wanted the division. My thing was it's not special if you don't wrestle anyone. That's why I have a problem with 6 divisions in Alabama

  10. Nobody-Im going to go out on a limb here Joe Namath style and guarantee you that we will at least double our medal count from last year.

And I dont feel we are in recovery mode. Still building but its not like Region 1 was a dominant force and then fell off, I see steady progression.

How many placed last year? It's easier to place when you take out good kids from A/AA

  11. I'm still on the fence of whether the split will improve participation and eventually, competition. I don't think "participation" should be the ultimate goal, but no one at TSSAA asked my opinion anyway.

I think the level of wrestling in Region 1 as a whole is improving year over year. I think if we were put back in last year's region there would be several battles to remember in both the championship and consolation rounds . As it stands there will be wrestlers placing top 4 who would have been 2 and out last year, as such, the competition level may not appear as impressive. There is no doubt we will improve our medal count over last year but increased participation did not make that happen.

I agree that the feeder program is key. (See the other Coacht thread titled The Pipeline--there is extensive discussion regarding the benefits of feeders) Region 1 has definitely improved in this area and we will see the results of this, both big and small school, over the next few years.

It's not just region 1 in recovery mode. Science Hill and TN High are getting better based on feeders. The thing you also have to consider is injuries and such. They were lots of teams this year as a whole that when a light weight got hurt, they didn't have anyone to throw in there. I remember when DB was good not based on middle school but AAU. It takes a talented coach to coach AAU or middle school. It's something hard to find. Yes there will be a decent showing at state in AAA, but I think medal count will be around the same. I think there will be a couple on the outside looking in. Region 2 in my opinion will have more medals.

  12. IMO the A/AA separation hurt this year as Greeneville and Sullivan East many times had kids in the Region 1 finals. Seymour being moved out of the region hurt too I believe. They had 2 or 3 kids usually pushing for the finals. Still got some good kids in there and I am sure the finals wont disappoint.

I understand that. It hurt a lot of regions. There just will not be those battles of good wrestlers in the cons semis and for third and fourth. That is the only part that gets hurt in the scheme of things. The finals still should be good, but maybe in a couple of years there will be better competition throughout the tourney.

  13. Townsend faced Ruth three times this season with the last occurring during district/regional duals 10 days ago.

    #1 12-5 fall RUTH

    #2 12-21 8-5 RUTH

    #3 1-24 8-4 Townsend.

That is good to know. Seems like one is getting better and the other is just staying the same. Hopefully it will be a good match if they both make it to the finals

  14. I may be playing favorites here but I don't think your giving Jeff County enough credit. I think there will be at least three in the finals. I respect your opinions, but Jeff county is not the same team they was a month ago.

You are right about that especially coming off a pretty good showing at state duals, but what I can tell, with new coach post is the top two seeds against each other earlier in the season. Not saying that those will be in the finals. Wrestling is all about match-ups as well. Jeff County may not be the same team, but individually do they match-up well with where they are placed in the bracket. That is the question you have to ask yourself. I feel that SHHS will win the regional title, but Jeff County, TN High, and DB are fighting for second through fourth.

  15. Now I realize that I have been out of the game for years now, but I think I still have a grasp of adding and subtracting.. I had to borrow my neighbors toes and fingers for this math problem.....

    Here goes. 36-6= 30.

    26+6= 32

    30< 32

So to say 1 match didn't affect the result of the dual/duel is not exactly correct, correct?

Like I said, don't know much about rasslin, but it looks like with the help from my neighbors toes and fingers I have servered up a dish of crow for you to consume....

    Donavan Sutherland ?

You are totally right, but you also have to give credit to WC for being there two years in a row. Now saying that, Cleveland is a force to be reckon with. I think that there should be a committee to let a school like Bradley in. I know this gets away from two teams outside each region, but there are stronger teams like Brad, SD, and Clev (in the same region). I think there should be like a 18 team bracket or something to get the best teams in the Duals.

  16. I know no one may think the Hill has much chance in the matchups at state, I however am hopeful and think they match-up well with Maryville by weights. Of course I am especially looking forward to 195 as no one seems to give much of a chance - but never underestimate will to win and desire to step up against a challenge in some people, you never know.

I have looked at the matchups with second dual either Cookeville or Ravenwood and unless the wrestling is just that much better on the west (which it may be) there are some matchup situations as well that could lead to a close match or a win. We have some pinners that can collect bonus points and scramblers that if they don't win are likely to only drop 3 pointers... A little self belief is good medicine.

I think that might make it to the conso quarters or semis

  17. Storm didn't wrestle at Region Duals. Missed weight for 138 (+3) by 4 tenths.

    First round results:

    Science Hill 66 - Morristown East 18

The Hill let JV kids wrestle the last 5 weights (120-145)

    Jefferson 43 - DB 33

Big swing match was Virgil finally getting the win over Palmer on the third try. It was an early pin, but he didn't catch him in anything crazy. Simple takedown right to a half.

    Finals score:

    Science Hill 52 - Jefferson 21

Exciting back and forth match for the first half of the dual until SH won the last 6 weights including 3 falls and 2 tech falls.

Science Hill and Jefferson are the 2014 Region One State Dual representatives.

The Palmer and Virgil match, Palmar from what I have heard tried a move and just got caught. The people I talked to are non biased and not taking anything away from Virgil. He has had a great year and continues to do so. The match in my mind would have been a great one if it went all three periods. Just my thoughts. These are two great wrestlers and can make a lot of noise come February. Good luck to both of them!

  18. I think that DB is not wrestling Dean against English in order to protect his region seeding. Why else would DB have wrestled Begley three times against English? Just a thought.

Sounds like the post above you explains your question. I don't know the answer, but king sounds like he knows.

  19. 106 Haney over Landers - 3

113 Blandit over Smith - pin

    120 Bishop over Smith - 3

126 Debien over Gregory - pin

    132 Stevison over Munoz - 3

    138 Taylor over Gregory -3

    145 Hamrick over Haas - 3

152 Hager over Martin - pin

160 Cotton over Oliver - pin

170 Hamilton over Pankey - pin

182 Raulston over Garcia - pin

195 West over Kennett - pin

    220 Beckingham over Kennedy - 3

285 Miller over Gaither - pin

    Cleveland 36 Walker Valley 36

Both teams needs bonus points to win, and Cleveland is good at getting bonus points. There Cleveland wins by a few. It could go either way, if Walker Valley gets after it.

I say Cleveland wins by 10.

  20. Cotton is a very good wrerslter and the DQ was just in the scope of two guys wrestling hard. It was an unfortunate thing for both wrestlers.

We can all assume who would have won and how they would have done it. Leading at any point in a match does not mean you will win. I know in my years of following wrestling, I have seen the underdog pull out an amazing last second victory.

The match mosty likely was a dual changer, No one in that gym wanted to win that way or to lose that way.

I don't second guess anything in wrestling. Most people know when one of your best wrestlers lose there is a lost sense of urgency
