  1. What kills me is the Tennessean used to do a writeup on every team that was the size of their 5A writeup today. They need to get back to their roots and stop talking about that goofy orange and white team to the east.

Absolutely true. The out-of-town corporate ownership has hurt HS coverage (and the problem is they own all the newspapers in Nashville's satellite counties too).

  2. Pearl Cohn defeated Hillwood 12-0. The Firebirds played without the services of Holt, Fitzgerald, Amos, and a couple of other players that are projected starters down the line.

Coach Brunetti is doing a great job at PCHS. If the Firebirds go deep into the playoffs this year he honestly deserves to win "Coach of the Year" because he has already gone to the semifinals twice and last year he did it with a completely different football team than the one that he had in 2006 (outside of Mason, Griffin, & Harris). The 2008 team is completely different than the 2007 bunch as well.

Brunetti seems to be providing a model for "how to get it done" in Metro. The challenge in a Metro program is in getting the kids who CAN play football TO play football. Brunetti's track record for finding his former players college scholarships to continue play is helping him recruit the potential players in his zone. D1A coaches can usually identify the players they need, but there are lots of smaller colleges and JCs that offer scholarship aid who make their player decisions by their associations and contact with HS coaches. Brunetti has built a lot of contacts in those areas that has helped him--- and his players.

  3. I just left the Stratford- Hillwood scrimmage over at Hillwood and Stratford actually was dominating Hillwood (4 offensive possessions for Stratford, 4 TDs, all on lengthy pass plays; Hillwood hasn't sniffed a scoring opportunity). Both these programs are depth-challenged (Stratford suited up 22 players, Hillwood 27), but Stratford has edge speed and elusiveness that Hillwood doesn't have an answer for (especially D'Angelo Bohannon, who turned a couple of short/intermediate receptions into long touchdowns). And Stratford's QB (#12) is a good passer who can get the ball to his playmakers.

Objectively, it's probably going to be a long year for both of these teams, but Stratford's skill guys will keep them in some games where they are otherwise overmatched.

While it's easier to get support for neighborhood schools, the neighborhood school in Metro has been dead for 35 years, not just 15-20, so while that's a partial explanation for the problems in Metro football programs, it's not the WHOLE explanation. All over Metro, there are tons of kids who have the athletic ability to be good football players who aren't playing.

  4. From THE TENNESSEAN:

Coming back: One year away was enough for former Brentwood Academy Coach Carlton Flatt, the winningest coach in state history with 354 victories. He was back on the field Monday as an Eagleville assistant.

"I'd just say it's quite an adjustment for me," Flatt said. "I'll always love Brentwood Academy, but based on the pressures and all that stuff, this is a good thing for me. Not to be pushing so hard or spending 12 to 15 hours a day on football … I'm enjoying a different role and basically just getting to work with kids."

  5. I was sadden by this story when I read this in the newspaper because I have been with them all this summer. The main reason why they only have 16 players to show up for practice is because their was not one offensive or defensive lineman that have showed up to practice. They never came to the weight room or showed up for conditioning. But I haven't been up there since last week and today I'm going to their scrimmage today @ Hillwood @ 5. So come out and support THE SPARTANS!!!

And East Lit did get their own team and they half of our players that's where most of the lineman came from. They bring about 5-6 lineman and about 10-15 skills players. So of course my old school is go be down for right now, but I'm betting anyone that the rest of the players will show up when school starts. I'm hoping and praying my last year school makes it to the playoffs atleast the first round. And I believe they can because they have 2 fastest players in the midstate in Deangelo Gray and Deangelo Bunchan. THEY JUST NEED LINEMEN!!!

Sounds like some of the "bigs" need to get their work ethic back up. There was one "big" in last year's Stratford program that was a real hard-working player (got his bench up to over 400, which is astounding for a HS player), and is now playing at Miles College (I believe he was last year's Stratford center).

I'm going to come and check the scrimmage out (Hillwood's just a few blocks from my house).

  6. Roshaun Patel was a great kicker.

Magwan Smith was an excellent dual threat athlete in the offensive backfield.

Greg Owens was a very good player at cornerback.

Allan Beasley was an outstanding player on both the offensive line as well as from his linebacker position.

ASIDE FROM THOSE 4 GUYS I REALLY CAN'T THINK OF ANY GLARING BLOWS THAT SPRING HILL SUFFERED THROUGH GRADUATION /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Who does Spring Hill scrimmage in the fall????? I'd love to get some action photos to add to the Region portion of our website.

Greg "Mookie" Owens is now playing for the Nashville Storm, and doing pretty well for an 18-year old competing against grown men. He's seen some action in our RB rotation, and is averaging 7.6 yards per carry thus far. I'm pretty surprised the smaller colleges in the area whiffed on him, but he's playing pretty well for us.

  7. Tennessee has roughly 300 High Schools with football programs, and giving good coverage to that many programs is a staggering task. With that large of a "field", one can't possibly personally attend everyone's games, so it is inevitable that Murphy's accuracy will be exactly as good as the information he gets from each school.

I think Murphy has performed a needed service for many years, and done it as well as I can imagine anyone doing it. And I see nothing wrong with his performance of this service being profitable (we do all have to eat, and that costs money).

  8. Looking for Tight Ends, Running Backs and Defensive Lineman for the upcomming 2008 season.

Either JC or High School player.

If anyone knows players still available please contact me.

Hanover College is a D-III institution located in Hanover, IN.

Hanover's a good program; Corry Stewart (Father Ryan), the younger brother of Nashville Storm CB Cromwell Stewart (UT-Martin) plays there.

We have some college-eligible players every year; if you'll send all your contact info to me at pking34@comcast.net, I'll make sure you get info on each of them, including game film.

  9. If only there were a school available to parents and students that could strike that delicate balance of academic and athletic excellence...

LOL. I think the school to which you slyly refer is a school that doesn't take a back seat to anyone as far as academic rigor. Decent football too. I remember when Ryan was this school's main rival (Brentwood Academy didn't exist yet).

  10. THe big game to watch as far as a hype standpoint goes will deffinately be the Ensworth vs MBA game which was revered as "week six" for about a year leading up the the game last year. There was a lot riding on that game because all of the students and players have been to school with eachother and continue to see eachother. Most went to ensworth, harding, overbrook or other middle schools and are always around plus Bowers vs MBA is going to continue to be a source of excitement because of all he did at MBA. I think that Ensworth can win this game because they will have more talent in more positions but mba will of course be a good team and will be stiff competition. Either way the game will be extremely hard hitting like it was last year and hopefully will be televised by Comcast again.

That game will be the High School equivalent of when Nick Saban's Alabama squad plays LSU under Miles; both coaches have won State Titles at MBA.

  11. Bulls' Noah arrested for possession of marijuana

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) ??” Authorities in Gainesville have charged Chicago Bulls forward and former Florida star Joakim Noah with possession of marijuana and having an open container of alcohol.

Gainesville police spokesman Sgt. Rick Roberts says Noah was arrested around 1:50 a.m. Sunday after an officer spotted him on a sidewalk holding a plastic cup containing an amber drink, a violation of city law. During a search at the station, officers found marijuana in his pocket.

Noah was released after signing a notice to appear before a judge - standard procedure for such offenses. He could face up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine for the marijuana charge.

Noah led the Gators to consecutive national championships before being selected ninth overall in last June's draft by the Bulls. He averaged 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 74 games as a rookie.

Bulls spokesman Tim Hallam said general manager John Paxson ``did express to Joakim his disappointment in his actions this weekend'' and added: ``Until we gather further information on this situation, we won't be making any further comment.''

  12. Last 10 years -

    2007 (10-2)

    2006 (14-1)

    2005 (12-2)

    2004 (7-4)

    2003 (14-1) STATE CHAMPS

    2002 (14-1)

    2001 (14-1)

    2000 (13-1)

    1999 (9-3)

    1998 (6-5)

Sounds like Hillsboro's been a very good program for the entire last decade, but their real dominance was 2000-2003. A Hillsboro All-State RB from that era (Marcellus Tibbs) joined the Nashville Storm recently, and he is looking like he is going to be a very good player.

  13. Last year classic the Nashville schools Maplewood and Pearl Cohn swept the Memphis Schools at Maplewood last year, but it was just wasnt about the games it was about getting the inner city community excited about football. And that they did. It was a great experenice. Maplewood and Pearl Cohn will host Memphis schools at Pearl Cohn this august. Then the following week will play each other next week at Maplewood. It will be a great week for inner city football to kick off the football season

I went and watched that doubleheader last year and it was a superb event; it drew a very good crowd that got into the action, which is something that has been missing in Metro in recent years, at least in the public high schools.

  14. They are actually the Eagles, but I don't think anyone cares. But your point about them playing a JV schedule this coming year is absolutely correct. It would benefit them a lot more and they would be a bit more competitive out there. It's a sad day when one is saying this, but unfortunately it is all very true. The situation has gotten completely out of hand. Someone from the State or TSSAA needs to step in and take over. They might have some leniency if it was a prestigious academic school, but unfortunately it is not. They hail far below the rest of their region foes in Williamson County. It's simply a basketball school and nothing more. Farewell Eagles....

Isn't Clarksville Northeast in MONTGOMERY County??????????
