South Greene played Grainger much better than the final score indicates.

SG was down 8 at halftime, after Grainger's Tori Rutherford made a three point shot at the buzzer.

South Greene starters played the entire third quarter and were up two, going into the 4th.

Grainger then hit numerous three pointers and played like the team we expected—outscoring South Greene 25 to 6 in the 4th.

South Greene played zone the entire game, which made a difference on the defensive end, with SG rebounding better than usual. The problem came when Grainger began making almost every shot in the 4th.

Another problem for SG was the large number of Grainger fans and cheerleaders, who made as much noise as the SG fans, thus negating much of the home court advantage.

SG is a very young team that has shown much improvement this season. Tonight's game is a cause for optimism. The season is not over, either.

Grainger is a very big and deep team. Having seen Meigs and Upperman, I would easily put Grainger in the same category. The rest of AA teams should take that as fair warning.

It could be an Interesting District tournament. South Greene and Greeneville will probably be on the same side of the bracket.  Since the tournament is at Grainger - that will definitely give Grainger an advantage.  SG is young but Greeneville is even younger.

I’m a East TN fan and I don’t know much about west TN besides what I read, so you probably know more than I do, but I think I will be pretty close from the Middle East, but anything can happen. Just thought I would get the 2A talk going, it’s been a little dead lately.

When Grainger plays well - none of the East TN teams can beat them - they have so many weapons.  The GP win over Northview last night was interesting.  I have not been sold on NV because their strength of schedule doesn’t look that great.  Am I missing something?

Well, they beat Grainger by a point, but got clobbered by South Greene a few days later. Greeneville couldn't buy a bucket in the 3rd Quarter of that game. Still, your point is well taken. Greeneville is young but pretty good sized (and growing). Let's not forget Coach Annette Watts, she gets the max out of her players.

Agree with you about Coach Watts - she gets the most out of her players and I am surprised that she doesn't get more players from the county who want to play for her.  With 10 years of College Coaching experience - she know and understands the game.  She only has 2 Seniors and 0 Juniors - this will be a fun group to watch the rest of this season and the next 3 seasons.

IMO Grainger, Meigs, and Northview are the best teams in the East in 2A, and are capable of beating anyone in 2A, it all depends on matchups. McMinn is way down this year, South Greene is a little down but they are still a good 2A team, and will be better by tournament time.

Sullivan Central is the real deal this year - I wouldn't overlook them.  They have the big post plus players on the outside that can shoot the 3.

  5. With about 12 seconds left - NG was leading and a foul was called on a NG player. He says "I didn't touch him" to the ref - but not in a overly obnoxious way and he gets T'd up.  I thought it was a horrible Technical that was going to change the outcome of the game.  Coalfield got 4 FT's and took the lead.  With about 5 seconds left a ball goes out on a Coalfield player and he says something to a different referee and then he gets T'd up (I think the Ref called it to even it up) and then a T was called on Coalfield coach so NG got 4 FT's.  I don't think any of the T's should have been called.

  6. Greeneville High School will be looking for a head softball coach for the 2017-18 season. The current coach, Bob Fortel, is moving to the middle Tennessee areas. Greeneville won the 2015 AA State Championship and with only 2 Seniors this year, 0 Juniors & 11 Sophomores (and a good middle school team) the future looks bright.

Greeneville City Schools has been ranked as one of the top 5 school systems in the state and their teacher salaries rank among the top in the state. For more information about the position, contact principal Patrick Fraley at 423-787-8030.

  7. I agree with other posts but Check out Greeneville High School also. Top 5 public high school in the State. Multiple state championships in various sports in past 5-8 years. The softball coach is a true softball coach -- his daughter pitches and plays travel ball on a team out of Chattanooga that won a national championship 2 or 3 years ago.
