  1. It was 14-7 at the half last year....do you not think other coaches and players on the field adjust and get a feel for the game. Its not like they are playing a 1-14 team...they were 14-0 for a reason.

Typing while at work. My mistake. And yes that's absolutely true west did get physically dominated...but west didn't make it to she 'ship by bein physically imposing. They got it done by getting Marshall and Cottrell the ball in space and letting them do what they do. They could not scheme up touches for those two that day.

  2. Up 28-0...with what could and should have been 42-0 at half last week...what adjustments would you have made Lombardi?

Perhaps I was referencing the state game from last year where west was up 14-0 at half time and let Henry Co come back, Sherlock. It's not like it's a one time thing. There's a history of it. The team is prepared for the game (Cummings and staff...I would argue mostly staff...make sure the team is ready for the game) but things start going wrong, Cummings loses his cool.

Last week when the rhea county defense was doing such a good job against the run I would've started running gun rollout plays with Marshall to set up screens to Cottrell and draws underneath...make their penetration come back and bite them. West also SHOULD have a few designed tunnel screens but they don't.

  3. I don't buy into the "____ has to play a perfect game" bs...no high school team plays a perfect game, not even maryville...so I don't see much of a point in talking about that. In order for west to win I believe this is what has to happen:

Force turnovers (but how?) hillsboro's qb looks like he thinks he's aaron Rodgers in he pocket. I'm not saying he's bad, what I watched of last week was extremely impressive. BUT he looked extremely confident in his arm. If west's secondary can play tight coverage, I think that qb may try to force a few Johnny Manziel plays, and that may lead to opportunities for turnovers.

2nd-don't abandon your darn bread and butter! People like to say that being one dimensional will lose you games...well, west would have won state last year had they not started trying to pass with 7 minutes left in the game. They had plenty of time, and had a rb who averaged 15 yards per carry. Dance with who brung ya.

Don't be stupid about the play calling. If the interior d line of Hillsboro is the weak link, attack it. Don't waste plays running around the edge and passing when you don't need to. Unless running the ball stops working...don't stop.

    Adjust at freaking halftime.

Hillsboro will win if west doesn't do these things

  4. Kevin, to answer your question since Ive covered every game the last two years and am currently writing their story I'll try to sum it up without boring you.

2013 West Rebels were expected to be good but they needed to find a qb to be great enter #7 who had played running back the year before. The senior class (according to them) was not as favored as the junior class was w the coaches. Both classes got along when they were winning but there was some friction and it showed in the championship game. That senior class had a lot of heart and most were the guys in the trenches.

2014 West Rebels were expected to be great and they have proved it. The team also likes one another. The senior class has talent everywhere but what is interesting is that the sophomore class has taken the place of last year's senior class in terms of supporting the effort. If the sophomore class keeps progressing they should be really good as seniors. Besides chemistry, the reason 2014 is better than 2013 is the play of #7. He is a year wiser and has made the qb position his own as well.

Hope that helped w/o boring u.

Not mad and not picking at what you said but...

Coach Cummings said to the rest of the team to "be nice to the freshmen, they are really good" on the first day of summer workouts this senior class's freshmen year....every year when the rebels lost in the playoffs, Cummings told the seniors how proud he was of them and how much he appreciated their hard work for the last few years. After the state game last year, he told those seniors to "learn how to lose like men" and then "turn in your pads when you get back...that will weed out the cowards" I don't think it's an "according to them" type deal. I think if Cummings' didn't shut that group of seniors they would have been a much better team.

  5. Really bad officiating. Vast majority went against West. Don't know who was trying to defend the no call on the TD pass to #85 to tie it, but that was the type of call that gets a ref banned from working again. Believe that the offsetting unsportsmanlike fouls were post possession, which means West should have kept the ball at least after the inadvertent whistle. Not to mention that there was a few TDs called back against West for holding. You could call holding on every single down of a high school football game. These guys wanted to be seen last night. Very very poor!

Thank god someone here has some sense. Penalties that happen after the play DONT AFFECT THE OUTCOME OF THE PLAY, only the placement of the ball. CHILDREN KNOW THAT for gods sake
