If the Cox kid doesn't play next year as is being rumored Alcoa will have a bigger talent drop off than any other school in that district (virtually 4 starters from a barely over .500 team). Not sure any coach can make that big of a difference.

Do you know why he was rumored not to play? His parents did not like one of the previous coaches. That problem has been corrected. He's playing AAU basketball this summer so I expect him to be back. Plus I expect a surprise or two before next season starts. People forget that the Junior and sophomore classes a few years back won back to back middle school Championships in the highest division on the East Tennessee side. Alcoa has plenty of talent at the school and should be much better next year.

You’re right about AE being senior heavy but AE is AE they will be at the top regardless.  Fulton 6 seniors????  Page and Davis are the only 2 i know about .  Who are the other 4?

You can add Trey West, Keithon Foster, Jashaun Fender, and Conner Haskell were all seniors according to the tssaa. This district will be much more competitive top to bottom.

Mo east beat 5 teams last year over .500

    Tenn HIgh

    sevier Co

    Mo west

    South Doyle (17-13)

    Greeneville

And you have to think, South Doyle, Sevier Co, and Mo West all play in the IMAC with Mo East so even their schedules are inflated, with the exception of sevier County this year. half the teams in that conference finish well under .500 every year. and then Mo East has no big out of conference wins IMO

racking up 20 wins against claiborne county, seymour, cocke county, G.P., etc.. is not that impressive. I'm not saying he can or can't coach. But alcoa usually schedules the top teams in the area. bearden, Maryville, Fulton, A.E., Grace, etc.. I was just point out facts.  He may do well there, I guess only time will tell.  All I'm saying is his record at Mo East is inflated by playing in possibly the weakest conference at any level in east tennessee (A,AA,AAA)

Those stats are only from last year, but go back and look at previous years and count how many teams he beat over .500.

Can't disagree with you really but historically Alcoa has better talent than Morristown East. That's where you're not factoring in better talent and better coach = better team.

    Rat,

Whoever it is better bring some guards with him because Alcoa's guard play was horrific last year. Looked like all they had left after the coach ran everyone off was a few JV kids. I know the big kid is back and he was an All-Region player but they struggled mightily to get him the ball in good positions. In 4-AA you better have good guard play or you will get exposed quickly and last year Alcoa just didn't consistently have the guard play to play with Fulton & A-E.

I will say that our guard play was very inconsistent last year. I would not call it horrific. We split with AE in the regular season and they beat us in a close one in the district tournament. Don't forget that two sophomore guards scored 22 points in the second half to help us beat Scott County in the district tournament.  These two guards should be much better next year.

They aren't saying, because they dont really know. Just guessing. I mean odds are a AAA coach, AA coach, private school coach, or a small college coach applied. so unless a Single A coach gets the job, they are guaranteed to have predicted correct.

Well you are correct we really don't know but we do know names. Just trying to be respectful of the coaches that have applied. The only thing I'm going to predict is we are going to get a good coach.

First integrated team, by my own calculations, to win a State Championship. This was in the old one class system.

Red Rebel, wanted to respond to this the other day but wanted to make sure I got the stats right. This team in 3 years went 96-11 with 3 state appearances, 1 Runner up, and 1 State Championship. Remarkable run for a school that had less than 400 students at the time. This team was givin the nickname mighty mites in 1965. The reason being is their tallest player was 6’2.

My only question to this response is, if he's had trouble with the administration and or the parents, why is he going into the Administration Role at the school?  Secondly, there's local school here in Knoxville, that goes by that same thing about quitting the freshmen team. I don't like that rule/statement either.  Who is this so call "best player" you are talking about?

That’s a tricky question and I’ll refrain from giving my opinion. As for your second question, the kid played basketball at Alcoa as an 8th grader. He was the best player on the team then. If you have followed Alcoa basketball the last few years you should know.

    Rat,

My sources over in Aluminum Town also tell me there was a TSSAA violation last year that wasn't properly reported that cost the team their Sub State victory and State Tournament appearance as well? I'm guessing that coupled with all the other inadequacies was the final straw.

This is not the main reason he was let go but it didn't help matters. His assistant coach didn't help his case either. That was probably his ultimate demise. IMO..

If a kid doesn't play a sport he loves just because he doesn't "like the coach" he is not serious as a player anyway. Generation of soft kids. You play the sport because you want to PLAY no matter what. Don't know the coach from Adam, but I know that excuse is tired and lame. Players play, coaches coach, parents support and all three should stay in their own lane.

Things are not always cut and dry. I was trying to put the situation mildly.  You admit to not knowing the coaches but you want to call my excuse tired and lame. Lol! Maybe you should stay in your own lane, if you know nothing about the situation.

Who was the last coach...why is he leaving?

Joel Kirk was the last coach at Alcoa. Where do I start on why he is leaving? He lost the support of the administration, fans, and parents. It was pretty obvious that we needed to make a change. We had kids that would like to play basketball but didn't like the head coach or assistant coach. To make matters worse is the best player in the school wanted to play this year.  the assistant coach said he could't play because he quit the freshman team 3 years earlier.  This kid would have been our best player this year IMO. I could expand on a few other instances but I'll leave it at that.

It’s a great job. The potential is there to win big at Alcoa.

We have talent, just need to find the right coach. With the right coach we should be pretty good the next couple of years. There has been a lot of interest in the job with close to 30 applications. People forget Alcoa used to be considered a basketball school instead of football.

Why didn't he send his kid to Zion Christian then? They are in the same county close to Giles , they  have a higher overall school grade and send a higher percentage of their students to college...they aren't very good at basketball though.

I don’t know why he didn’t send his kid to Zion Christian? Why don’t you ask him? I don’t understand why anyone cares? He did what he thought was best for his kid. I’m sure one day his son will thank him for doing so, if he hasn’t already.

Test scores comparing public and private is a garbage statistic! Public schools test EVERYONE! Public tests SPED ,  low income , single parent , kids who have ZERO support at home , kids who have ZERO aspirations for further education , and kids who didn't eat or sleep the night before. How many of those kids do private schools test? Take the top 10 % of students in both public and private and you wont know the difference in test scores. Thats the same thing that irks me when they say New Guinea or some third world country has higher science scores than the USA. We educate and test everyone, the rest of the world tests their best and brightest only!

What was wrong with my attitude? I didnt say i would send my kid there or that  I approved. You said academics was the reason kids transferred , I said that was not 100% true. You even agreed with me??

I never said kids transferred because of academics only but that is a big reason for sure. I did say if kids want to go to a better school. they should be able to without any penalty. Look at the gentleman’s post above. He actually moved but stated that he wanted his son to have a better education. That was one of the determining factors.

I think the coach knows his team better then you do. He played what he thought was best for his team. Those are young men, not robots.

However, my comments wern't about whether or not I agreed with is defense or not. My comments were aimed at your caveat. You could have left it off and just made your comments, because it was easy for you to critisize the man's choice of defense ... it wasn't hard for you to do.

Lol! First of all, I have the utmost respect for Jody Wright. He will be a Hall of Fame coach for sure. Second, yes he knows his team better than me for sure but they lost the game. The thread is Fulton vs Wooddale thoughts, can I not give my thoughts on the game? Lol! Your feelings must still be hurt the 3AAA Champion came East. LMAO! There will be more gold coming back East in the fall. Book it!

Will you agree that Bearden had a better nucleus of talent than Whitehaven? You questioned  me in a earlier post about it. Just curious?

Thats the classic excuse for people who have or want to break transfer rules. If there were no transfer rules and Michael Jordan was coaching at the LOWEST performing academic school in America there would be a line 6 miles long to transfer in there!

Why do you think private schools are thriving in Tennessee? Do you think it has to do with academics at all?  There are still some very good public schools but if you were to compare test scores the private schools are typically much higher. Private schools in the very near future will dominate Tennessee sports and academics because of attitude like yours. I'm actually a public school supporter but can see where this is headed.

    Evidently, its not TOO hard.

So you thought playing man to man gave them the best chance to win the game. Did you watch the game? His starting center had 2 fouls in the 1st quarter. HELLO?

I played against Jodie his first year as coach for Fulton. I've known him for sometime and respect the job he has done at Fulton. That doesn't mean  I can't critic his strategy in that game.

You hit the right picks for the Class AAA title game but Bearden beating Memphis East so easily was surprising to me. I picked Bearden to win in the "Big Ones" contest from the site but I would have never predicted for them to handle ME so easily.

I seen Bearden play 3 times this year and was very impressed. Bearden just had a real good mixture of talent in their starting 5. I went 20 for 21 in the state tournament in the big ones contest.
