Thanks BullShark,  I saw them up close and personal last year and this summer.  If we get to play them, I don't think they'll sneak up on ole Loretto. I think Coach Rutledge will be doing her homework to prepare for each team we play.   That probable match up between Huntingdon and Summertown ought to be an all out war, but if we get past Clarksburg we'll have our hands full with McKenzie.  I think this could be a very good tournament.

You will throttle Clarksburg and McKenzie.  They are not even close to being contenders.

It will definitely be interesting to see how it goes tomm. with a lot on the line. I don't know if it will happen but we faceguarded Chloe and Tess and they had about 20 pts. between them when we played Greenfield and I don't think we have done that again yet. I am talking about chin to chin all night and don't come off to help another defender. That is what happend to USJ the other night. 2 Jones girls got faceguarded and it shut USJ to 16 points. I am not so sure I wouldn't do that with Howell and Lee. GC is very deep and if you shut them two down you would have a good chance, IMO. Never know what kind of game plans will happen in tournament time.

TCA has a very good coach and so does GC.  It will be a battle of the minds tomorrow night. IMO, TCA has the better athletes on the whole but GC has better fundamentals, with the exception of #4 for TCA. It will be a battle of the coaches and their adjustments, IMO. Looking forward to it because the winner stays away from Greenfield and makes it to the Boro.

I appreciate that but I have seen every single game they have played this year.  Guards are getting much better and the 8th graders handle it pretty well so we have depth at guard.

I guess we will see tomorrow night.....

Looking forward to seeing y'all at Bethel. Beautiful 1st class venue with seating all the way around the court. Big gym but not spacious. Got a small tight gym atmosphere to it. Clarksburg is not playing very well lately so your 2nd treaters should get some work. Huntingdon could give both of y'all some trouble if they can pull it together. We've played a cupcake schedule only scheduling only Gibson Co and Gleason from region 7. Really haven't beat a good team all year. But with us getting our very talented point guard back I would be worried if I were you. Fillies are a long and fast team that rebound well.

They are long and fast and well-coached.  Don’t let Croppy poor mouth too much.  They could easily be back in the Boro for the third straight year!

IF TCA gets 20 points from post play they will win game.  Guards will take care of ball.  They have improved in the areas you are alluding to.  They are not taking as many bad shots in the 4th or turning it over as often in the 4th.  If GC gets hot from 3, they will be hard to stop.

    Respectfully, disagree.

GC vs TCA.  Should be a classic.  I think the Vegas oddsmakers would rule this a toss up!  GC has home court advantage BUT TCA has beaten them at GC the last three times.  GC does all of the litttle things well. They box out, play great position defense, don’t turn it over and take good shots.  They just don’t make mistakes.  They are not super talented but talented enough.  Shoot the three extremely well. TCA is extremely talented, long and athletic and now have depth.  They aren’t quite as basketball savvy as GC.  Lee and Howell will get theirs and do their thing.......key will be TCA’s post play!  If they show up they could win by 6 or 8.  If they don’t, they could lose by 6 or 8. Crowd will definitely be in GC’s favor. I’m taking TCA by 3. Much respect for GC’s team, coach, program and fans!  Good luck to both teams Monday night!  I believe the winner will be in Murfreesboro!

I have to disagree on the posts being the key to the win here.  IMO, TCA has the best post players in the district and probably the region.  It is undoubtedly a huge advantage for them especially on the offensive boards, but post season play is all about the guards.  Posts can't get the ball if the guards don't take care of it.  I think the key to this game is the guards taking care of the ball against GC's pressure.  TCA has a tendency to get a little sloppy and turn the ball over when they are up in the fourth.  I think the key will be the guards in the fourth quarter not turning the ball over and the team not taking ill advised shots.  It is going to be a great game.  Good luck to both teams.

  7. Went to the TCA v Peabody game last night.  Wow, there was some athleticism and speed out on the court last night on both reams. Congrats to TCA!   I have seen Peabody play several time now and it finally dawned on me just before halftime why Peabody is a good team but not great.  They CANNOT shoot.  There is so much power, speed and strength on that team but no shot goes up with any “touch” whatsoever.  Layups are no problem, but midrange shots and threes are a struggle for them. If they had just one pure shooter, they might be a state contender.

How about let your girls play basketball. Quit making up excuses in case they lose. You state you want to quit seeing bad basketball then we for sure need more classifications. Odds are you will find more atheletes among 300 girls then you will among 50. That is a legit disadvantage not 20 minutes of warmups at a neutral gym.

    GCPioneer and Allvolhere,

You guys crack me up going back and forth on so many threads.  Maybe ya’ll can find some common ground and agree on something.  Don’t both of you guys love the Vols?  Maybe you can start there...

Well, here we are!  I really enjoy reading Bullshark and Croppy’s comments on Single A girls in West Tn.  They are very unbiased and appear to get around to various gyms to see all the good teams.  Based on their opinions and what I have seen so far, Single A in West Tn stands as follows:

    1. Greenfield

    2. Gibson Co

    3. TCA

    4. Peabody/Gleason

    5. Dresden

i think Greenfield is the team to beat but Gibson Co is a close 2nd.  I think TCA is the only other team that could legitimately beat Greenfield or GC.  I think Peabody, Dresden or Gleason could beat GC or TCA if they have a real good night.  It’s going to be an interesting next 14 days!!  I think TCA is the second most talented team behind Greenfield but GC is the most disciplined team which means a lot in basketball!  Good luck to all teams and let’s bring a Gold Ball back to West Tn again! Prayers for no injuries to any of the players!

IMO, two of the following 3 teams will be in the boro, TCA, Greenfield and GC. I dont think Gleason has the size to advance.  Dresden is solid but not deep enough and Peabody is one guard away from being a state contender.

In the post season, it is all about the guards and taking care of the ball. TCA now has plenty of them with their 8th graders, but how will they and the other guards respond in the region tourney at Bethel? Combined with their bigs, they may just be deep enough to win the 4th matchup with Gibson County. If GC shoots well from the outside, they will be in the boro once again joining Greenfield unless Tess and Chloe both have bad nights and get in foul trouble. Substate games will be running clocks as there are no solid single A teams in Memphis. Just my opinion. Should be fun...

Looks like Clark Range and Gibson County are the favorites to take the Gold Ball, both teams are playing lights out right now. Two powerhouse schools that have been there many times and both have great coaches.

Way to deflect attention away from the defending state champs and incredible team in their own right.  LOL  Reminds me of the Patriots!  "Don't pay attention to our consistent greatness and great coach!"  LOL  You are the real deal and the champs till someone knocks you off.  Congrats on having a great program!  If the brackets line up,  I think you guys will be playing Clarkrange for the Gold Ball.  Good luck to you!

Thanks for the compliment. GC played with a ton of poise tonight. Peabody hit them in the mouth early and got off to a 9-2 lead. We were down 12-6 when we got out of man and went to a zone. GC was dialed in big time in their zone defense and went on a 23-9 run by halftime. Peabody got most of their buckets on that run on stick backs. Their post is a beast. Thought GC handled their press very well too. Post play for GC is getting better as well. Started getting better against TCA. Overall good win for our girls. Very proud of them.

Totally agree.  I was a little worried after the slow start GC had.  They never seem to panic though.  Well coached for sure.  They are very fundamentally sound.  Can't wait for the district and region tournament.  I am assuming that TCA throttled Middleton, but I did not see a score on the game.  Anyone know?

This year will be an interesting tournament. There will be some really good teams coming to Murfreesboro with the usual suspects (GC, Greenfield, Clarkrange, Summertown, Clay, Pickett and Loretto all looking to stake their claim to yet another gold ball.  We shall see how the tournaments shake out. On this side of the bracket no one in Class A is playing better than Clarkrange.  Clay County is a close second but anything can happen come tournament time.

Could not agree more.  Can't see anyone that is a clear favorite to run the table.  No one team seems to be head and shoulders better than any one else.  I hate to say it, but with this much parity the state champion will come down to a combination of being ready to play every game, how games are called, sickness, injury, location of tournaments and unfortunately luck.  It is going to be fun!  I am leaning Clarkrange, but I wouldn't put a wager on it.

Yeah and they still win. That was indeed one of the biggest BS calls I have ever seen. That ref ought to never be able to ref again. GC lucky to win that game. That call itself would have sunk most teams. TCA got tired late I thought and the two or three TO's late cost them. But they are a good team and Ned to be in the top 5 in the state. They can beat anybody in the state.

Pioneer,  I am a fan of neither team, I just like good basketball, but the back to back inbound turnovers GC had up 5 with under 2 to play on the baseline were very uncharacteristic and dang near cost them the game.  I thought there were easier passes available than the ones they tried to make.  I kept thinking they would throw a “homerun” ball because all of tca’s defenders were between the inbounder and GC’s players in the front court.  Technical foul was ridiculous for sure, but there were poor calls spread out on both sides pretty equally outside of that.  Round 3 in 2 weeks

  14. Great game tonight!  TCA's length and size are a tough matchup for GC.  The next matchup could go either way.  Tonight's game reminded me of the Super Bowl, great defense on both sides of the ball.  GC is lucky to escape with the win because they were dominated on the offensive glass!  Tough FT shooting down the stretch helped seal the win!  Worth the price of admission and then some!

I guess I’m kind of confused at the “conservative play by GC” comments.  Last game they pressed us down to the last shot. They were very agresssive on defense.  Offensively, I have to think TCA’s defense had something to do with the way GC played.  It’s almost like folks think the last TCA win was a fluke.  I can tell you that it wasn’t.  I think the USJ win might be our biggest win of the year so far.  I think they are more talented than GC.  They aren’t as deep but they have a post that comes off the bench that is best post we’ve faced this year.  Maybe if we win tommorrow night we might gain a little respect.  Two great teams playing regardless of who wins!

Not sure how many times you have seen GC play but normally they are much more aggressive on offense.  They drive the ball much more often than they did in the first game and they dang sure take the open three shots that they passed on repeatedly in the first game.  Defensively, they were not conservative and TCA handled the pressure  well.  Trinity's defense was not bad, but shooters were open and did not shoot and the few times GC attacked the basket, they were effective.

I could not disagree with you more about USJ being more talented than GC.  USJ has the best player by far, but their depth is no where near that of GC (including all of there posts.)  Humboldt and Peabody have better posts IMO.  I would take GC 10 out of 10 times on USJ's home court if they played!  USJ is WAY down compared to their usual teams and their parents will tell you that.

Croppy,  you may eat your own words an it will be your fault because you will miss the game if you show up friday.  They play tomorrow.

  16. Here is how I see the game playing out.  Trinity will press hard with their long and athletic players.  Unlike most teams they have played, I think GC handles the pressure and keeps the game close. If GC plays as conservative as they did in the first game, they will lose again.   I don't see big leads on either side.  Trinity's best hope is to go into the final few minutes behind rather than in the lead.  They play much better and looser when they are playing  from behind (USJ first game, GC first game) rather than from in the lead (Crockett, USJ second game, Peabody first game).  The winner gets one less tough game in the district tournament.  I got Trinity by 2.

So you think GC will clinch if they beat you guys Tuesday which would give you 2 losses and Peabody 3 losses and GC 1 loss? You think? You guys kill me.  I would hope so. The way I see it if we beat you by 2 we would have the tiebreaker over you and if Peabody don't beat us by 10 or more we would have a point differential over them because we won by 22 which would be capped at 10. I think Peabody has the tiebreaker in point differential over you guys as well. Just saying if we all finish with 2 losses and we all are 2 and 2 against each other it would go to that tiebreaker if indeed what you said is true. Looks like there is no way TCA can win the 1 seed unless it beats us if your tiebreakers are correct. Looks like Peabody has to hope for a GC win against TCA and for them to beat us by 10 or more and win on a coin flip. GC's offense last night looked more like it did when we played Westview, South Side and the second Dyersburg game.

The regular season in this district looks like it comes down to Tuesday's game.  Big stakes here because the district regular season winner will only play one game against a team remotely capable of giving them a game.  The district winner gets guaranteed a #1 or #2 seed in the Region tourney because the 4 teams outside of TCA, Peabody and GC are horrendous.

Agree. Wynn played way better but their posts have got to quit putting the ball on the floor. They turn it over way too much because they want to bounce it before they go up. Power bounce is so 1990’s! Dresden played them good 3 quarters but lack of bench and IMO some very bad calls just gassed them out in the 4th. I thought the guards played well as they got to the basket at will. Peterson is a solid PG and Childress and Washburn are great shooters. Greenfield is just solid all around. Little Darby back completes that team. Tess moving into the post has made them better than last year and Chloe is a beast. Reese and Caroline know their roles and compliments the rest. They will win district, region, and substate with ease, but their bench after the starting 5 may cause them some issues at state.

They may very well win the substate game with ease because all single A teams in Memphis are mediocre at best, but winning the district and region with ease, I am not so sure.  Everyone will come to play in those tournaments and players have a tendency to tighten up a little when the season is on the line.  All it takes is a few missed shots or a bad call and things can go south quickly.  Remember, these are 14-18 year old kids, not professionals.

  19. 7 minutes ago, UCSportsFan said:

I remember them do you remember the Jackson County teams from 99-2015?  Or the Clarkrange teams from that same era?  I promise you we have fielded some teams that would’ve had a running clock against those same teams you’re talking about and maybe even the ones you’re so proud of.

I sure do.  They were outstanding as were the Gleason teams of 10 or so years ago. Someone please explain with all the emphasis on travel ball, how the whole single A has become so watered down.

  20. I thought Wilkins over coached  the last game GC and TCA played and played way too conservative. First time I can ever say that.  TCA has the best player on the court, but GC was the more complete team. GC never aggressively attacked the basket, but when they did they got good results.  Not sure what to make of the new 8th graders that TCA has. The depth def helps.  Intense said they played well tonight in a "hostile environment" and they did okay,  but they were in a "hostile environment" at home. They looked okay if they were who I thought they were.  Couldn't be near as hostile environment as a district tourney at GC or regional tourney  at Elam Center will be, but we will see. IMO, they cake walk next year through D2A next year and play for a gold ball, but this year remains to be seen.
