CHARLOTTE, N.C. – This year the Myers Park High Lady Mustangs will make the 400 mile trip to Murfreesboro, TN to take part in the ultra-competitive We Back Pat Showcase. The classic will feature four teams, all of which are ranked in the unapproved website Xcellent 25. The state of Arkansas will be represented by the Conway High Wampus Cats. The Wampus Cats are currently ranked ninth in the Xcellent 25 and are defending AAA State Champions where they defeated Northside (Fort Smith, AR) 74-67. The host team, Blackman High, currently holds the number one spot in the Xcellent 25, although most believe they will drop with their loss to Potter’s House Christian from Jacksonville, Florida in the 2014 Turkey Jam. The Blaze are coming of an excellent 34-1 season that saw them win the D1 Championship over Ridgeway (Memphis, TN), 65-44. Elizabethtown (KY) is the only team that didn’t win their State Championship last season, but make no mistake about it, these girls can play ball. At eight in the Xcellent 25 the Panthers are looking to show they are the real deal this season. Your Mustangs, who are currently fourth in the Xcellent 25 have a tough road ahead. They will tip things off against host school Blackman at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night and just 17 hours later play defending champ Conway at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Myers Park is coming off an impressive 30-1 season that saw a 4A State Championship over Southeast Raleigh, 61-46. They are currently 5-0 this season with their closest victory being 15 over Ardrey Kell. The Mustangs are led by senior Aliyah Mazyck, Chanin Scott and Rydeiah Rogers and a slew of role players who can get their own shot. Look for players like Morgan Uptegraff, Kianna Funderburk and Aryanna Brown to have a big tournament. If the Mustangs want to come back undefeated there is no doubt they need everyone to play well. Myers Park will be looking for a little revenge in their first game as Blackman was the only team to defeat the Mustangs last season. We talked to coach Nelson before their game against Charlotte Catholic on Wednesday and asked her what she was hoping to get out of this trip, “It’s a good test of where we are, we know where we want to go but to get there you got to have a map and you got to figure out where your pitfalls are.
