This is a hot topic rlh, with proponents on both sides having "logical" arguments. In addition to logic and facts, I like to consider everything involved and how the facts affect everyone involved. Consolidation usually eliminates a few positions and condenses maintenance of facilities, while incurring large up front expenses and increasing busing expense into perpetuity. Long story short... into the foreseeable future the expenditures/savings are nullified. So why do it? Advocates argue diversity of course offerings and campus security, while those against counter with student performance and community involvement. If you want to stick to scientific findings, schools ranging from 600 to 900 students most effectively balance curriculum and optimizing student performance.

What very few proponents of consolidation want to address is the effect of closing schools on the communities in which they are located, and the impact on individual students in outlying areas of the county. Boarding a bus every morning two hours before, and exiting two hours after school isn't considered... businesses dependent on localized activity isn't considered... school support by those same businesses and the community as a whole isn't considered, as well as other "small" issues made more difficult to monitor and police, such as truancy, abuse, bullying, ect…

My personal viewpoint is that small rural schools offer security and individuality to the students that the large ones can't match. Diversity of curriculum is good on paper, but by percentages of student application's, it is more for propaganda than application. I would be much more comfortable sending my kid to a school on a bus driven by my neighbor, where the principal and most teachers were my classmates, and most of the students and their families are familiar to me. Also, even though the school system has no "official" affiliation with, nor duty to the community in which the school is located, I (personal opinion here) feel that our schools "owe" a gratitude to them for policing, servicing, and supporting the school. Last, but not least... those "positions" that proponents desire to eliminate are held (in majority) by good taxpaying county residents who depend on their jobs. If consolidation eliminates 9 positions (roughly $460,000.00), yet incurs an up front cost of 10 million for construction, and increases the transportation budget by $90,000.00 per year...well, you do the math.

Gotta admit I was for consolidation when I was younger, but now I see what each of these three schools mean to their communities. I'm amazed how the people of Whitwell came together to support their football team. Probably nothing short of a Russian invasion could have done it any better. You are correct when you say there are many pros and cons to this situation. I've been listening to people talk about this, with great passion, all week yet no one knows where the school would be built or how much it's going to cost. Would it open up new academic possibilities? Maybe. Some examples I've seen put forth, as a pro, are culinary arts and cosmetology, Calculus I and II, etc. I'm sure doing make-up and hair will be a popular choice but the other three, well...…………… On the athletics side the proponents argue that the new school would have new sports such as bowling, lacrosse, etc. All I can do is scratch my head on that one. Now, about the busing situation. It's all good if you live within five miles of the school but if you live on the mountains well your in for a long week. A large percentage of the proponents, I've seen commenting, will live within this five mile radius. Seems like the kids that will commute three hours per day are just casualties of consolidation. Lastly, and far from least, we have the great money issue. I saw one person comment, on social media today, that we should "max out" a wheel tax and rely on property taxes to make up the difference. OK, our sales tax is already "maxed out" and we're gonna have a "maxed out" wheel tax, and some level of increase to our already high property taxes. I guess I'll just have to wait and see which argument convinces me consolidation is the right thing to do. Maybe the fear one, "Our current schools are unsafe" or maybe the guilt trip one, "Don't you care about our children's future?" Time will tell.

In 1A your going to have more blowouts than any other class because of all the small weak schools but it should get more competitive across the board the higher the classification. I hope they leave it alone other than maybe realign the regions. I wish WC was back in the region with Cville, Cwood, PC, Richland, MTP and Loretto

I agree, not much you can do with 1A other than add some of the smaller 2A teams. At least that might make things more interesting.

  3. Most of you that have been posting on this thread can relax. If the TSSAA doesn't re-align the public school divisions (drop it to 5 instead of 6) it will be the same 3 or 4 teams from the east and west every year in Cookeville. This is particularly true in 1A and 2A. Saw some really weak teams make it to the second round this year which speaks volumes. I'm sure most fans would rather see more competitive games than to set through blow-out after blow-out. There's been a lot of that also, this year, and again it tells you this alignment is way out of kilter.

Losing players like #17 from the last several years make it tough on any coach.

Losing your entire offensive line, entire defensive line, all your linebackers, your kicker, your punter and your power running back, makes it tough on any coach. Coach Mathis simply has too many shoes to fill in too short of a time. Going to take time and a lot of patience from the fans.

Word at Hardee’s . Coach is on the hot seat...

It's not the coach. It's not the coaching. It's not the practices. It's not the off season workouts. The way this season has gone wasn't cause by the great eclipse or President Trump. A coach has to work with what he's got. I doubt Saban could have done much better. In 1A and 2a ball it's hard to have a loaded team year in and year out. Teams go up and teams come down. It's an endless cycle. These young men need to keep their heads up and do their best.

I do too. A lot of good kids that have sat behind 3 yr starters that were All State players, Mr Football Finalists, etc... They just need a game or two for them to realize themselves that they are a good team.

Best of luck to the Warriors tonight. Hopefully, with the quality coaching, quality off-season program and the fact those 3 year starters provided the opportunity for these kids to have a ton of playing time, Marion can get the W.

  7. What kind of mess is this? That southtowner man quoted your post on this website before you erased it. Out of all people you Jasperlites is belly aching and you fellars have broke more rules in the past 7 years than anybody. You fellars even made ESPN. Just waiting to see what lying lips starts belly aching about. Get out of here with your mess. You think im joking but im not.

Good to hear from you also, Roy.

  8. The Sr class at Marion County in 2016 was the last players that McCurry had a hand in coaching so now I see Marion not being as dominant as they have been in the last 4 years. Sorry no matter what way you look at it McCurry help make that program in the last 4 years.bottom line is McCurry didn't physically paint anything and no charges were brought up on him. I am willing to bet that just about every winning coach out there could be questioned about some of the things that have happened in their progras too.

I can make you one concrete solid promise; the 2016 Seniors at MC did not learn one thing from Mac except how it feels to be ashamed of their coach. Latter coaches are the ones who shaped those kids.

  9. Really. Best I remember, Marion County was in the dumps, before he showed up. So just thank you for helping bring them back to relevance and move on. Whiners!!!

Yeah and they were in the county landfill when he tucked tail and ran. What kind of coach, after most of his assistant coaches have been arrested for vandalism, up and quits during quarterfinals week? A guilty one! Ever seen a football team play a quarterfinal without a coach? The kids were having to call a lot of their own plays because stand-ins didn't know the offense. That's what FC has hired. The players brought MC back, and have continued to long after his debacle.

  10. I sure did. I didn't always see eye to eye but I respected him. The players will play for him or they will watch from the stands. No participation trophies with this man. That's why he is a winner.

Unbelievable decision by FC administration to hire this one. Talk about a desperation move. Rebel fans get ready for pure embarrassment  and probations   for your football program. Best thing that ever happened to Marion County football was this one leaving!!!!!!!!!!! All I can say is Wow???????  :roflol:  :popcorneater:

  11. Not good with this quoting stuff. But, yes he does attend Trezevant and has since his 9th grade year. Like I said, nobody sends their kid to Trezevant to play football if they don't live in the district. It's located in one of the worse parts of Memphis. Why don't you spend a day walking the halls at Trezevant and see what these young men overcome on a daily basis. Open invitation for everyone on here. I'm sure they would welcome you with open arms. And you can see for yourself if he's there.

TruthBtold, I appreciate you answering the question. And to old willie2888, who thinks it's was a "retarded question"; there's a team in Chattanooga who has several players who attend a sister school playing for them. It's not out of the ordinary. Why would asking if CR did the same be "retarded"?

  12. The one thing alot of you don't realize is, Trezevant plays with the kids in their neighborhood ONLY. nobody is coming from another part of town to go to school or play at t high. As a matter of fact, there are probably about 10-15 players across the city making HUGE contributions for other teams that live in Trezevant's district. Y'all would really hate us if they stayed home!

So, yes some of you are correct. T high doesn't compare to Alcoa or the great Maryville. We don't have the parent support, resources, or facilities that an average school has, let alone the before mentioned teams have.

The fact that for last 7 years, Trezevant has competed at this high of a level is impressive in itself. And if you look at the schedule over those years, you will see that most non district games are against QUALITY 5a n 6a schools where they not only competed but won a lot of them. So quit looking for reasons to throw stones.

And for the record, the last classification, Trezevant was 3a playing up in 4a. Coach was gonna jump up to 3a, but the principal overruled it.

Don't be mad cause they chose to play where they should be.

Alcoa has done a great job building a program and wants to challenge themselves after all of them gold balls by moving up. Some of you are just mad because you know deep down inside your team doesn't stand a chance as long as t high is playing, so you are looking for reasons to diminish what these kids are doing on the field. They are playing the hand dealt to them in life. Everybody can't be from Suburbia or small town USA where football is life.

I thought we trying to make America great again. Let's support one another.

Still doesn't answer my question. Does CR go to Trezevant High School? Just trying to figure out if it is just a rumor or not that he only plays football there. It's hard for a lot of us from "suburbia" or "Smalltown, USA" to wrap our heads around the way inner-city schools have kids from different districts playing all over. The TSSAA would crucify most schools for that. Here, if your physical address is not within the zoning for a school or you haven't played since freshman year there then you are required to sit out a year before playing. I'm just trying to get some insight of how things work in Memphis.

  13. The 3 in the backfield had around 2700 yards rushing combined last year. We lost some great players but honestly we had players waiting that would have been the workhorses on any other team in the valley last year. The offense scores just as quick as last year and alot of that has to do with a line thats been starting for 3 years. This line gives the new qb alot of time to get better and he is going to be good.

    +1. Agree 100%.

  14. Ma'am please don't get your undies in a wad. Trust me, PP68 was talking about from a statistics point of view. Marion County did lose about 75% of last year's offensive production. Marion County has a lot of good players again this season. The offensive line are all solid players and I am including the tight end in this as well.

Undies not in wad. Offensive production is considered a team as a whole, scoring production is a different beast. Hard to read between the lines on here sometimes.

  15. Those 3 players were about 75% of the offense though. Regardless of the outcome we both have good chances of making deep runs. I would love to see both teams make it to Cookeville. Says a lot about our kids here.

Wow, what about the other 8 players???? Only 25% of the offense??????????? Those 3 would have been running for their lives without the OTHER 8. It takes 11 to make a great offense! It's referred to as a TEAM.

  16. Okay, another year of MC football has arrived along with the usual injuries. I do not post much on here unless something really bothers me, so here goes....... As with last year there are certain fans, for whatever reason, getting on this site and posting every detail of every injury a player has from jock itch to hang nails to concussions. This is a PRIVATE issue that should be left between the player, coaches and parents. There are way too many unethical coaches and players out there looking for any advantage they can get. I hoped after posting this same message last year it might stop some of this, but obviously I was wrong. If you have concern about a player then by all means go ask their coach, parent, or the player themselves. I care greatly about each one of these kids, as I'm sure you fans do, but please use a little common sense when posting on here.
