  1. I really thought Covington would win, but I didn't imagine them winning by this score. I heard that the QB from covington threw a couple of good passes for TDs in the game. RE had a great season no doubt! Absolutely nothing to hand their head on!

What did the 2 backs do for covington tonight? Also, what did the R back from RE do? I wasn't able to make it like I hoped so I need somebody to tell me how this one played out.

  2. Big game tonight! Both coaches have playoff experience, both teams are good teams. I am basing my pick off of competition. Covington has played several teams that are on RE's level. RE has not played a team yet on Covington's level. I'll go with covington by 4-7 points. I think RE's kicking game will end up biting them. They will fail to convert a couple of 2 point attempts that will decide the game.

Squatch co would beat either of these teams by 10. west tn football doesn't hold up well against the east in the playoffs.

This is silly. While it is true that East Tn does tend to get the upper-hand over the west most of the time, there are only a handful of teams that would beat these two teams. I have heard of Sequatchie Co. before, but certainly not because of their football team. Looks like their one good season last year is getting to some heads over there. East Tn high school ball seems to be the same as East Tn college ball. The teams who cant get it done ride the coat tails of the teams that get it done every year. This is no different than TN fans chanting SEC SEC when bama wins it all.

I'm in agreement. RE hasn't faced an opponent this year with the running capabilities of a Covington. I would venture to say that Covington hasn't faced a team with a dynamic RB and run game as they will face when they play RE. This is going to be ground and pound from both teams. Clock control offenses. A lot of punting from both squads.

Who will control the big plays from the other team? Who will be able to pass more effectively? Covington is averaging 80 yds/game while RE is averaging 120 yds/game. Who shuts down the other's run game more effectively? The chargers are giving up more yardage per run then RE is. I don't think RE holds Covington to 35 yds rushing ... but what do they actually hold them to? 100 yards? 150 yards? Can Covington beat RE only gaining 100 yds rushing? How many yards rushing does Covington hold RE to? 100 yds? 150? Which team wins with their rushing yards drastically reduced as such?

Who has the turnovers? Covington? RE? When good teams face another quality good team, the games tends to be UGLY. Can Covington win ugly? Can RE win ugly. Make no bones about it. Yardage won't come easy for either squad. Does Covington get a case of the butter fingers with their Wing-T  type offense? Does RE get a case of the yips when carrying the ball?

Does the Covington QB throw the ball to the other team when asked to pass the ball more then usual? How about RE's QB?  Who keeps their head when things aren't going to plan?

Does the coaching for RE outweigh the Covington coaching? Do the Covington coaches out manuver and get the better of Major Wright? Who coaches their team better in the critical situations?

    Questions.

I'll say this, if covington only runs for 100 yards, they will lose. Same goes for RE. Covington has played some really good teams, especially closing out the season and managed to hang some pretty good rushing numbers. I look for more of the same against RE. Also, I know in the 3 games I watched Covington play, the QB completed most if not all of the passes that he attempted, including the bomb he threw against Milan last week to win the game. I didn't see the Covington/melrose game, but judging by the score, covington won ugly. More of the same last week against milan with two good teams going at it. Covington won ugly. I don't look for covington to pass the ball anymore than usual. They will throw it 5 or so times.

Also, Major Wright is a great coach! But when it comes to playoff experience in high school ball, Id say the covington coaches far outweigh the RE coaches. The coaches for covington have been around a while. They are very familiar with the playoffs and know what it takes to get it done. I believe i heard last week while at the milan game that coach wheeler, the head coach for covington has been to 4 state championship games himself. Thats pretty darn good.

I think the question is can RE keep doing what they have been doing all year against the best team they will have seen to date. Covington has seen 2 or 3 teams on the level that RE is. But RE has not yet faced a team that is on the level of Covington. I expect covington to keep doing what they do. Run the ball and throw some passes in to mix things up. I don't expect them to change that. What will RE do when the things that they have been doing all year do not work against the best team they have played?

  5. I must admit, I haven't seen RE play this year, and have only seen Covington play against Milan twice and South Gibson once, but I find it hard to believe that RE will have "too much speed" for covington. In the 3 games I've watched them this year, covington has had all the speed you want. I may be wrong and RE may  just blow covington away with speed, but I would bet covington will be the team thats able to get to the edge in the run game, and set the edge on defense.

  6. I really think that Covington will win this game. Was at the game they played last night against Milan, and Covington has 2 or 3 guys that can carry the load no doubt. I know RE has a stud, but you know what you are going to get from them and him. Covington can really beat you many different ways. The QB from covington can really spin it. The pass he threw late in the game, which ended up being the game winner, was unbelievable. Covington passes it just enough to make you respect it, but with the QB they have, it looks like they could throw it around quite a bit more if they need to. Had a couple of tight ends who were open every time the QB would drop back. The running backs covington has really wear on you. I noticed early in the game last night that they weren't really pushing through some of the tackles by Milan, but late in the game they were picking up 4 or 5 yards more a run just because they had worn down the Milan defense.

Will be interesting to see next week. I hope I can make it over to covington again. RE will definitely be ready so Covington will have to bring their A game. I think Covington will be one of the few teams outside of Memphis that will have the athletes to match up with RE and Covington should come away with a 7-10 point victory.

  7. 1st of all, this post should be taken down. Neither RE or Covington is winning 3A. 2nd of all, I agree with the last post, both RE and Covington will struggle to win this week. Let alone win 3A. Now I do think Covington has the best chance of those in the west to win 3A, but they aren't going to beat Alcoa if they do make it to the final game. Covington and Milan are pretty much the only 3A teams out west with a chance to make it that have any playoff experience at all I believe. Both Milan and Covington have a pretty good history of playoff success, but don't let that fool you into believing that they can win 3A. It won't happen.

  8. I agree, most people want to see the alcoa/PC matchup in the finals. But I do believe that covington has a legit shot to put a damper in those plans. They are the only team I could see doing it. I don't put much stock in Raleigh Egypt even with their 10-0 schedule.

I also don't think anybody will hang 30 on alcoa, but the wing-t offense that covington runs, or used to run (not sure if they still do) will be a challenge for whoever they face. Tough to simulate it in practice, especially in a week.

  9. Ahh, I remember that 2012 season. Was looking forward to that matchup maybe happening in the playoffs. Covington was really good that year I remember, and I had heard quite a bit about SGC.

Anyway, I think Covington will pull away in the 2nd half of this game. They always seem to be in top notch shape, and I think that will pay off this week. SGC is really good though. I just don't think they will be able to contain the covington offense without having seen it in previous years.

  10. WHAT IN THE WORLD HAS HAPPENED TO COVINGTON? They have now lost 3 in a row after a loss to Raleigh Egypt tonight. They were ranked top 10 in the state preseason and everyone that I talked to thought they would be a typical covington team that would probably go undefeated in the regular season. The wheels have come off over in tipton county it seems

  11. Made the trip up from Somerville to watch this game. Very impressed with both teams, but Covington just executed when it mattered most. Dyersburg scored and went for 2 to take the lead early in the 4th 8-7. Covington goes three and out, punts, and dyersburg drives and kicks a FG to extend the lead to 11-7 with 2 min left. Covington goes 80 yards and scores with 37 seconds left. Dyersburg tries a reverse pass that is picked off. Covington takes a knee and wins 14-11. Heck of a game. But like I said, dyersburg's defense was dead tired at the end of the game, and covingtons offense looked pretty fresh.

  12. Had a chance to watch Covington run the wing-t a few years back, when they played Fulton in the state championship game. This was the only game I got to see of Covington, but it seemed to me that they ran the wing-t pretty darn well. Had Fulton confused for most of the game. That is really the only team I have seen recently that runs the wing-t, for the most part I have just heard of a few teams around running it. I would say that that years Covington team would have put up a ton of points on HC this year. And this is coming from a HC fan.

  13. Hardin can't play with Fulton. I cannot put it any more simple than that. Went and watched a bunch of games a few years ago at state, Covington and Fulton happened to be one of them. I had hear a lot about Covington that year and how good they were. Had a man I respected tell me they were one of the best teams he had ever seen play on the high school level...long story short, Fulton won pretty convincingly. From what I hear they are just as loaded now as they were then. I repeat. Hardin cannot and will not beat Fulton. Don't think they make it that far anyway.

  14. I'm not really a fan of bolivar, just follow a bunch of local teams from around the area. Used to get up to Covington and watch a bunch of those game a couple of years ago when they went undefeated. Honestly, from what I heard I think Covington will win pretty handily. Should have the better athletes on the field. If it's true that Covington is that young....watch out in the next few years. I've seen a team coached by Marty wheeler that had a bunch of seniors...that team went 14-1 and lost in the finals.

  15. Bolivar has started out pretty nice so far. I know they haven't played much of anybody, but 2-0 is 2-0. Look forward to watching them against Covington this coming week. Anybody have any information on Covington? Record says they are 1-1 with a loss to Munford and a win against Melrose. Score of the Munford game was close, so that should have been a good game. Kind of surprised to see that Covington beat Melrose. Must have a pretty good team.
