  1. TNBC this iz tha troof rite hear.....Donkee baskitbawl, cow drops and bake sails ere also vurry emportunt..... :popcorneater:

We all know about the many donkeys at Maryville...lol...No, seriously annual reports given to TSSAA on donations from successful programs all seem to have a common thread. 3 to 4 main donors who open their check books every year to support. These amounts exceed any amount you could come up with by having any fundraiser events...

  2. Disagree.  You've got to have players, especially in smaller classes.  Great example is Polk County.  7-8 year span they dominated with talented players and great coaches. Same coaches, lack of talent...and haven't won a game in two years.  You could drop Billicheck off in some places and they'd never win.

What you need to understand no matter what class your in is that "talented players" just don't pop up in the 11th grade. A true program develops players from community ball on up into middle school and then on the high school. Every school has a good year or two as a result of a specific talented player but the key to a successful program builds year after year and just reloads. The one thing your missing is a truth that many don't want anyone to realize or accept and that is if you have this type of successful program year after year parent will want to move into your schools area so their kid can play there. Programs take years to build and maintain. A single year or two with a talented player doesn't make a program.

  3. The biggest difference we see today is unlike years gone by the conditioning of the players is no where near. We see kids in the 270 to 300 lbs range who today are nothing but butter balls. Big, fat , slow and out of shape. Strength is a key to any line and consistent conditioning. The weight room has been replaced with 12 oz curls of cokes and junk food. I'd take any of those 190lbs lines of the 90's like those Riverdale teams of the past over any of the blobs we see topping 300lbs todays. If schools and parents would wake up and see what it takes to develop players and teams today they would see it all goes back to what it takes to make a successful program.

  4. Maryville has the hard core fans like Me,Stars and these other Maryville coachT posters. The ultimate Maryville fan is a woman named Della Mae Nuchols. Her health isn't good now so she stays at home and listens to the games. For years she never missed a game. I see a lot of the same people at Maryville games every Friday. Ones who live in another state keep up by internet.

A strong fan base is important but its only a small part of what builds a program. Lets face it , many "fans" sit by and enjoy the success of their schools program without ever opening their wallet and check book other than to by tickets and a hot dog. It takes the community business support and the donations of thousands of dollars to support the program that makes a difference. Contrary to the belief of many, it takes a lot more than concession sales and a few car washes to support a program.

  5. Please enlighten us about the "flying" rumors.

Coaching changes aren't always tied to wins and losses. Sometimes its the overall program that needs to be overhauled. It takes more than a coaching change to fix what's wrong at many schools. Many legacy schools around the state are looking to re- capture their glory days and seek the year after year programs that allow them to reload every year. Schools need to look for the program builder, not just the coach. All you have to do is look around the state to see that it takes a successful program to create stability.

  6. I was asked to post my article on the DB thread so here goes..

As we look back of the past year broadcasting games all over this state and in Alabama there once again is a common theme. The schools that have built a program from middle school on up with a consistent theme and step by step program always seem to come out on top. Yes, there are teams that occasionally have a few talented players that take them to the next level for a year or two only to fall back into the pack in the next few years. These are the team that usually face the program teams in the finals each year only to loose. We see these teams with that special talented player riding their backs into a good season every year. So, what does it take to be on top year after year? Its the development of the program from middle school on up. Weight training, conditioning, utilizing the same football scheme through out the entire program. We see these team reload every year and if you take a hard look these teams all do one thing and that's playing consistent fundamentally sound football and don't make a lot of mistakes. You only have to look at the number of players these schools put into division 1. It's always on a lower percentage than many of the other schools in the state. Why is that? It's because these teams were taught to play correctly and develop correctly. They all have the same common theme and a coach that lives and breaths the program. So, does throwing money at the program work? No, we see this all the time with that one financially secure parent willing the throw their money into the school in order to have their kid get a leg up on everyone else but after them move on so does their money. a school, its principal, the school board and every coach has to be on board to make the program work. Paul Brown, the late coach and owner of the Browns and the Bengals when he was a high school coach in Lima Ohio made it a practice to deliver a football to every new born baby boy born in the town. Why did he do this? To set the tone for the program. Every young man in that town grew up wanting to play at Lima and for Coach Brown. You see , its all about the program that makes the success. What is your school doing..

  7.  You know you and I see eye to eye nearly all the time. I think the real question is what makes for great program building. i certainly believe, coaching, talent, facilities, and support from the admin down have to be there. One thing that i think is essential great parent/booster involvement. Parents need to be a part of the solution, not the problem. I think that when parents show support and really talk positive around their player it also breeds momentum. The parent that talks the program down, talks the coaching, the " you should be a star and it is everyone else's fault that you are not are the poison that keeps programs from truly achieving there full potential. Parents need to revert to the mentality we all grew up with or around.and back to the point you made. The expectation breeds success. If you are not the top dog, I expect you to put in the work to get there. Every player holding their own  personal accountability to be there best.regardless of what anyone or everyone else is doing.

The only problem with your statement is in todays world the parents only care while their kid is in school. After they graduated the program is not on their minds anymore. That's where is has to become a school, community program that builds from the middle school program on up. A lot of the parents you see talking down programs where a part of that same program when it was successful and they have a hard time standing by and walking it crumble. IE, the Riverdale's of the world and other programs around the state. It takes years to build a program and a single win doesn't  make one. We'll see that next year when surely Maryville will be right back on top. All you have to do is look at the top Alabama schools to see what a program can do and despite the doubters they are mainly public schools. A great program breeds success year after year and creates the desire for community, parental and student development to reach the same goal year after year....

  8. OMG, greatest game ever???? If your a fan of either team maybe. In all my years of broadcasting ive never seen a championship game with absolutely NO DEFENSE!!! I thought I was watching an arena league game. I almost got whiplash from all the up and down the field. Neither team could make the BIG STOP on defense.

  10. Why would you say Whitehaven couldn't beat whoever wins the other semifinal? What is it about Whitehaven's game that would have us outmatched in your opinion. (Watch this)

Its actually very simple. After doing the Collerville game and seeing the lack of discipline and offense in that loss all you have to do is compare points scored between the teams Whitehaven had one game all year where they scored 40 points. The rest of the games they averaged 20.75 points a game which included 2 losses. Compare that to Maryville with a 42.6 points per game and no losses and Oakland with a 37 points per game average and Ravenwood with a 36.2 points per game average and that's just points. I'd be glad to get into the yards per game stats if you like. Its all about the ability to score points..

  11. Lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 the only teams that have came REMOTELY CLOSE

TO BEATING THEM AT STATE THE PAST 5 years 😂😂😂 with one of the two actually beating them. Lol and ravenwood Fell apart! Up 3 scores

On them but to each it's on my friend let's not forget the white station victory as well.. Marybille is very well capable of getting best but that is why we play the game

Appreciate your enthusiasm but I believe we were talking about this years teams. After all pride lives in the past and if there is one thing I've learned after 30 years of broadcasting TV games all over this state is humility can come from the future.

  12. After doing games for Alcoa and Maryville, Oakland And Ravenwood and many other 6A teams this year, I think the statement is more correct if your talking about programs instead of team. Alcoa has a great overall program that has one of the best coaches who know hoe to develop a program to year after year consistency and has done that everywhere he has been. As for one on one with many 6A teams in the state they would give them a battle but they are far from the second best team overall in the state.

  13. After doing games from both teams this year I would say this could be the game of the year. Maryville is their usual machine with consistent talent and well coached of course. Oakland has several players that may be more talented than most of the players on the Maryville team. This is the same thing we see every year. Can individual talent rise to the level to be able to overcome a fundamentally sound well coached team? I guess we'll see. The one thing for sure is mistakes will play a big role Friday night. If Oakland can avoid the mistakes and giving up the big plays they will have a shot and could be a close one.
