  1. We all know about the many donkeys at Maryville...lol...No, seriously annual reports given to TSSAA on donations from successful programs all seem to have a common thread. 3 to 4 main donors who open their check books every year to support. These amounts exceed any amount you could come up with by having any fundraiser events...
  2. What you need to understand no matter what class your in is that "talented players" just don't pop up in the 11th grade. A true program develops players from community ball on up into middle school and then on the high school. Every school has a good year or two as a result of a specific talented player but the key to a successful program builds year after year and just reloads. The one thing your missing is a truth that many don't want anyone to realize or accept and that is if you have this type of successful program year after year parent will want to move into your schools area so their kid can play there. Programs take years to build and maintain. A single year or two with a talented player doesn't make a program.
  3. The biggest difference we see today is unlike years gone by the conditioning of the players is no where near. We see kids in the 270 to 300 lbs range who today are nothing but butter balls. Big, fat , slow and out of shape. Strength is a key to any line and consistent conditioning. The weight room has been replaced with 12 oz curls of cokes and junk food. I'd take any of those 190lbs lines of the 90's like those Riverdale teams of the past over any of the blobs we see topping 300lbs todays. If schools and parents would wake up and see what it takes to develop players and teams today they would see it all goes back to what it takes to make a successful program.
  4. A strong fan base is important but its only a small part of what builds a program. Lets face it , many "fans" sit by and enjoy the success of their schools program without ever opening their wallet and check book other than to by tickets and a hot dog. It takes the community business support and the donations of thousands of dollars to support the program that makes a difference. Contrary to the belief of many, it takes a lot more than concession sales and a few car washes to support a program.
  5. His name has come up on the short list for Riverdale when the change is made there..
  6. Coaching changes aren't always tied to wins and losses. Sometimes its the overall program that needs to be overhauled. It takes more than a coaching change to fix what's wrong at many schools. Many legacy schools around the state are looking to re- capture their glory days and seek the year after year programs that allow them to reload every year. Schools need to look for the program builder, not just the coach. All you have to do is look around the state to see that it takes a successful program to create stability.
  7. Rumors seem to be flying lately around the Riverdale job with rumors of the principal retiring after 36 years. This is one that many people believe is way over due.
  8. That's because we all know that Maryville has a program, not a year to year team...
  9. With the 2015 football year ending the rumors are being to fly in possible coaching changes in 6A around the state. Where do you think changes need to be made? And who are the possible candidates to fill those spots? Let's hear what you've got to say.
  10. I was asked to post my article on the DB thread so here goes.. As we look back of the past year broadcasting games all over this state and in Alabama there once again is a common theme. The schools that have built a program from middle school on up with a consistent theme and step by step program always seem to come out on top. Yes, there are teams that occasionally have a few talented players that take them to the next level for a year or two only to fall back into the pack in the next few years. These are the team that usually face the program teams in the finals each year only to loose. We see these teams with that special talented player riding their backs into a good season every year. So, what does it take to be on top year after year? Its the development of the program from middle school on up. Weight training, conditioning, utilizing the same football scheme through out the entire program. We see these team reload every year and if you take a hard look these teams all do one thing and that's playing consistent fundamentally sound football and don't make a lot of mistakes. You only have to look at the number of players these schools put into division 1. It's always on a lower percentage than many of the other schools in the state. Why is that? It's because these teams were taught to play correctly and develop correctly. They all have the same common theme and a coach that lives and breaths the program. So, does throwing money at the program work? No, we see this all the time with that one financially secure parent willing the throw their money into the school in order to have their kid get a leg up on everyone else but after them move on so does their money. a school, its principal, the school board and every coach has to be on board to make the program work. Paul Brown, the late coach and owner of the Browns and the Bengals when he was a high school coach in Lima Ohio made it a practice to deliver a football to every new born baby boy born in the town. Why did he do this? To set the tone for the program. Every young man in that town grew up wanting to play at Lima and for Coach Brown. You see , its all about the program that makes the success. What is your school doing..
  11. The only problem with your statement is in todays world the parents only care while their kid is in school. After they graduated the program is not on their minds anymore. That's where is has to become a school, community program that builds from the middle school program on up. A lot of the parents you see talking down programs where a part of that same program when it was successful and they have a hard time standing by and walking it crumble. IE, the Riverdale's of the world and other programs around the state. It takes years to build a program and a single win doesn't make one. We'll see that next year when surely Maryville will be right back on top. All you have to do is look at the top Alabama schools to see what a program can do and despite the doubters they are mainly public schools. A great program breeds success year after year and creates the desire for community, parental and student development to reach the same goal year after year....
  12. OMG, greatest game ever???? If your a fan of either team maybe. In all my years of broadcasting ive never seen a championship game with absolutely NO DEFENSE!!! I thought I was watching an arena league game. I almost got whiplash from all the up and down the field. Neither team could make the BIG STOP on defense.

  14. Its actually very simple. After doing the Collerville game and seeing the lack of discipline and offense in that loss all you have to do is compare points scored between the teams Whitehaven had one game all year where they scored 40 points. The rest of the games they averaged 20.75 points a game which included 2 losses. Compare that to Maryville with a 42.6 points per game and no losses and Oakland with a 37 points per game average and Ravenwood with a 36.2 points per game average and that's just points. I'd be glad to get into the yards per game stats if you like. Its all about the ability to score points..
