  1. It will be interesting to see how things change when HV Middle School opens up in a couple of years.  Certainly they will redraw the district lines, and that could make a huge difference.  Of course, Knox County athletics is like the wild west when it comes to transfers, and "living situations."  What are the current feeder schools for HVA?

  2. None of Powell's 3 games against Oak Ridge have been close this season, so it'll be interesting to see if the Panthers utilize the same strategy as Farragut did against OR. Until TSSAA adds a shot clock, there is always a chance that a team will milk the clock.

That is always the great neutralizer when a coach/team have the forethought and patience to slow the game way down to try and counteract a more talented team.

  3. District 3 swept the night Saturday.

-OR wins in a steel cage match against Farragut.  Don't need to say any more than it ended being a street fight due to loose officiating.

-Central gets by a streaking Heritage.  Heritage peaked at the right time, but Central had too much for them Saturday.

-Powell upends Bearden, which was the biggest surprise of the evening IMO. (Did I hear correctly that Blevins resigned after the game?

-Karns comes back against Maryville.  Karns was close to even (maybe minus 1 or 2) on the offensive glass against a much more physical Maryville team.

Still sticking with OR over Karns in the region championship.

  4. Yeah, they played us close at their place, but that score is a little deceiving. We led the whole game by 15-18 points and just fell apart and lost focus in the last 4 or so minutes, so it looked closer than it was. But, yeah, you're right.

Karns always seems to have a solid home court advantage.  I think it was maybe '13 that they lost a region game at home to Powell I believe.  Other than that, they are usually 7-10 points better at home.

  5. Maybe, but Karns will struggle rebounding against any team with some size to them, and if Heritage still has that big tall Center they had last year (which I think they do) they will struggle mightily. Plus, they have to beat Maryville first. Not an easy task. I think most of the teams, with the exception of us (not bragging just true IMO) are pretty much on an even level playing field.

Agreed with the "level playing field" part.  I think home court will play a huge role in the first games, and then just banking on the fact that Karns probably is just a tad better overall than Heritage.  Plus, Karns only lost to OR by 4 or so early in the season.

  6. Karns better rebound the ball a lot better than they did last night if they want to make it to the championship. We dominated them on the glass last night. They're very vulnerable there. Watch out for Heritage. They're peaking at the right time.

There's a huge difference rebounding against OR compared to Heritage.

  7. With districts winding down, focus turns to regions. Who takes Region 2 and why??

    District 3:

    Oak Ridge

    Karns

    Powell

    Central

    District 4:

    Heritage

    Bearden

    Maryville

    Farragut

    Let's hear it!

    Winners in the quarters:

    OR, Karns, Bearden, Heritage.

OR beats Karns for the championship.

  8. yea, I hear you...and generally agree. In this case, the refs came up because in a one pt game in the final possession a 7.8 "ten" sec call was made costing jellico a chance to win. So yea...that will get some comments as it should. It was a terrible screwup...that kind of mess up simply cannot happen without anyone commenting.

I agree that the refs need to be more "on their game" at this time of year, and especially late in games.  My rant comes not just from comments on here, and at high schools and middle schools across the area, but I was at a little league basketball game this past weekend and heard a coach telling his team that they lost because of the refs.  Certainly it wasn't because he  made several questionable decisions coaching-wise (that I saw waiting for the next game to start that I was there for), or the fact that the other team was better.  I was just really appalled by the fact that even at the elementary age there are idiots out there blaming a loss on officials.  Teach the kids to play the right way, with solid fundamentals, and with good sportsmanship, and then let the love of the game carry them through those tough loses.

  9. With all this whining about referees some things to think about:

    1) Are the refs human?  YES

    2) Do humans make mistakes? YES

    3) Did all of the players finish the game perfectly with no mistakes (turnovers, missed shots, fouls, missed defensive assignments, etc)? 99.9% NO

So if we are not going to crucify the players for making a turnover, or missing a "good" shot, then why should we do the same to a human ref?  It all evens out in the end.  I'm sure there were calls that were questionable/judgement calls that went both teams ways earlier in the game.  Get over it and just applaud the young men for giving their all, and if you want to jump on the refs, talk to the TSSAA, buy a whistle, put on the stripes, and go out and do it better.  Otherwise, pay your money, buy some popcorn, and hope your team makes just enough plays to play another game.

  10. Before the 2011 season, OS made it to the region every season myself and my dad can remember dating back to 2001. Before 2001, I don't know. The first half of that stretch, Oliver Springs was a AA school. Crazy successful. Making it to the region 14 out of 16 years (Maybe more) doesn't happen to any run of the mill school.

Combine that with the boys not making the region, and can you think when was the last time neither the boys or girls from OS were in the region?

  11.

    2007-OS beat WB

    2008-WB beat SB

    2009-satelite at OS

    2010-Jellico beat OS

    2011-Jellico beat WB

    2012-WB beat Oneida

    2013-SB beat WB

    2014-Coal beat WB

2015-Oak beat Coal**Game was canceled and not played due to weather. Oak "won" because they were the higher seed***

So actually, Oneida and Oakdale haven't won the tourney title at Wartburg.  Oakdale should win it this year no problem.  It will be in the region where Oakdale gets tested, and we will see if that murderous early season schedule pays off.  Or have they been hampered by less than stellar competition all season compared to what they will see in the region?

  12. Wow...both OS teams lose and fail to advance to the region.  Anybody know the last team OS was shut out of the region on both the boys and girls sides?

Should be Oakdale and Wartburg in the championship.  Neither team wants to lose in the semis, as that would most likely be a bad first round region matchup.  Would want o save playing Grace or Meigs until the region semis or finals.

  13. Mighty Oakdale took down Oliver Springs on the road in the most hostile environment in the district! Hats off to the Lady Eagles. Making it to the region makes this season a success based on how things were going earlier in the season in my opinion. Don't think they've got enough to take down Oneida Friday, but crazier things have happened.

When's the last time OS didn't make it to the region?  Has to have been a while...
