  1. Around here, Milan has always been one of the "cream of the crop" programs and playing them at all, much less with the team they have this year is going to be really tough.  I've never seen a coach work as hard and with as much enthusiasm as he has done with our kids and they love him for it already.  But as Govolsknox said, it's going to take some time for the boys to learn and master his system as it's much different than what we had before.  Patience is a virtue, but a hard one to live through!

  2. Surgery today to repair a real bad break in lower leg. Looked to be compound break. Hope it was a clean one so he can heal quickly. More than likely will miss most of his senior season if not all. Kid plays with heart and was worried more about letting his team down more than anything else. He is a special young man

Thoughts and prayers to him, his teammates, his family and the coaches too.  He sounds like a great young man.  Hope he makes a full recovery.

  3. I say 3 yrs tops under Bradley

He has the program rejuvenated no doubt about it.  Lots of excitement now whether that pans out I have no idea, but that is certainly the goal.  I like our chances better before the decision this week that could potentially place teams like CAK, CPA, etc in the same class not to mention BA and Ensworth if they stayed down which they probably won't, but..

I know that a lot more kids are interested in playing now and that can only be a good thing.

  4. I agree that the TSSAA is trying to get all privates to go D2.  But, with the crazy enrollment numbers (only 7 schools qualify for the top division), it doesn't sound very enticing for those privates at 266 or above to "get" to play against Ensworth and Brentwood Academy if those schools choose to not play up.  Based on 2014, that would include Boyd, Silverdale, Goodpasture, and Grace Christian.  I also heard Columbia Academy has grown enough to be in this class as well.

Seems like TSSAA's actions could have the opposite effect - these privates will go to great lengths to stay in D1.

By the way, since MBA and MUS are all-male, their enrollment figures are doubled.

I agree with you, but aren't most privates in D1 now less than the 266?  Thought I saw that some where.

  5. From a competition standpoint, the private schools playing in D1 1A have a lot to think about now.  With D2 going to 3 classes, the D2 1A class just got watered down big time!  BGA, ECS, FACS, Harding, Lausanne, N. Point, St. George, USJ, & Knox Webb all got bumped up to D2 2A.  That leaves Davidson Academy as the only school in D2 1A to have every won a state championship since the inception of D2 in TN ('97).

If you're goal is to win state championships no matter the circumstances, D2 1A just got a lot more appealing to Clarksville Academy, MTCS, NCS, Columbia Academy, etc.

One other thing regarding D2...the D2 2A classification just got crazy.  How does BA, Ensworth, MBA, & MUS sound in D2 2A?  I bet they play up but who knows.  As it stands, they could be in D2 2A with the likes of Boyd & Silverdale (if they played D2).

I think the TSSAA is trying to entice and push all private schools into D2.  Seems the vast majority would go into D2 1A which as you stated is "watered down."  Or if they try to stay in D1 the TSSAA has removed the 1 class increase cap for the 1.8 multiplier and a private would move up however many classes their population x 1.8 dictates. Many 1A and 2A privates would not want to play in 3A or 4A.

  7. Hey, you're welcome in this board and thread anytime. There's not many USJ posters on the T. There's actually just a couple of us TCA posters so you can chime in anytime and no one will mind. Always good to have other opinions. Do you have a son playing for USJ?

Thanks Intense.  I may just do that from time to time.  Yes I have one playing (or at least on the team). I think football is one of those sports that teach a lot of life lessons, but the same could be said for all sports.  Bringing the guys closer together and learning to depend on someone other than yourself is a great aspect.  Good programs bring out the best in kids and I think for the most part, that's what all of these schools do.

  8. I remember when we were in the same district with USJ! It's been about 20 yrs ago though! The Hill kid you're referring to is a freshman this year! He was at USJ middle school until his parents moved to Adamsville, great kid!! His mom is from here, she graduated a couple years behind me! His dad is the QB coach at JSouthside I believe!

Back in the day!  Great to hear about the freshman- I bet he turns out to be a good one for y'all and glad he's at a good school/program.  I will move off the 6 2A board now so y'all can get back to discussing your district.  It's been fun and good luck everybody!

  9. I definitely agree you have a very tough out of conf schedule. ST Georges is a much better team than Adamaville on a year in year out basis. We know because we have played both the last 4 years. ECS would be a top 3 team in our region every year. My point would be for USJ to move over and keep their games with SG and ECS like TCA has done. There are no super weak teams in region 6 like Rossvile and TRA. Gibson County would be the closest but they are improving every year. Region 6 is just tougher from top to bottom than the D2 conf USJ plays in. Top 3 in that division would be As good or better than top 4 in Region 6 though. Good discussion, especially since it's not going to happen! Lol. Multiplier would not send TCA to 3A. No way we could compete in 3A. My gut is that we will go to D2 and play up because we would be in smallest division. I would bet JC would do the same. JC, TCA, USJ, SG and ECS would be a pretty good division. Maybe SG will play up! They have about 440 students compared to our 240. I believe USJ I has about 330 or so.

Good points all the way around-- I think playing up in D2 AA will be beneficial for TCA and JC because you will continue to play us due to rivalry anyway and might as well be district play.  I hope Ensworth and Brentwood Acad play up too because as of right now, they're in our division AA!

On a different note, I wonder if Adamsville has a kid named Hill this year?  Fine young man and a great athlete at least during middle school age.

  10. They voted 3 classes in D2. With 265 cut off for D2 A. D2 AA would have ensworth and the likes. Where do you think TCA and JC choose to go

Seems like I read somewhere the 1.8 multiplier remains intact, but the elimination of the maximum 1 class increase.  So does this mean TCA or JC could be moved up more than 1 class to 3A if they remain in D-1?  If this is accurate (again I thought I read it), it would be a significant change.

  11. I think it would be great if USJ came back to D1 and played in Region 6 but we know that won't happen. TCA and JC are more likely to go D2 than USJ come back. If they were in that region they would be assured of tough games every year against Adamsville, McKenzie, TCA, JC and sometimes Halls. As TVol said they wouldn't have the weak games against Tipton and Rossville that doesn't do them any good. USJ would win the region on occasion and would always be competitive even when they didn't win the region. D2 board is kind of quiet these days isn't it. Going to be interesting to see how USJ does this year.

Intense I think you're right on the move to D2.  I agree on the hypothetical region alignment as well except we already play TCA and JC so Adamsville and McKenzie would be the new tough games, but ECS, Briarcrest and St. Georges are no slouches.  Throw in Battleground Academy and an out of conference Milan and I think we are playing some pretty good teams already.

  12. A few reasons. If you're a fan of High School football here in West Tennessee, you want to see good quality football games that you wouldn't mind traveling to go see. With JCM closing and Rossville Christian no longer having a football program, that sets up to see 2 good football games on October 7th. Blackman travels to Southside and USJ will be in Milan. In addition, Murfreesboro Oakland will be playing at Haywood on that same night. Three good football games that could possibly turn ugly, but it's something that'll be exciting as a fan. I want to see USJ play Adamsville, a game against Trinity that'll could determine seeding in the playoffs. I don't want to see USJ play Tipton-Rosemark and FACS, no way someone will have any interest to watch that. It's great for football in West Tennessee. Seeing USJ step up and play D-1 (which won't happen for now on because of these reclassification stuff that's going on).

Wonder why Mickey Marley was just really an average coach despite his "amazing" record? Because he played those teams and beat up on them for years, however, he still got his fair share of credibility. But once he retired and and everybody looked at his "win vs. opponents that finished above .500 record" it was brutal, and full of disappointment. And that's why Mickey Marley was a little overrated once people saw that. In D-2 you only play like 12 games to reach Cookeville, in D-1, you have to play 14 games. More opportunities to lose. Can't hate when you have facts in front of you.

But yes, USJ moving to D-1 will be a win-win for everybody except USJ, but it won't happen. And I'll still have a frown on my face, no smiles!!!

As much as I want to, I can't disagree with alot of what you said.  Some like Coach Marley being overrated because I think he was a good coach, but as you said, facts are facts.  I think depth plays a tremendous role in football, but especially with teams like these in which most players go both ways.  That's really hard to do for an entire game and when the injury bug hits, devastating to most.  I think this is the area in which USJ is going to change the most besides play calling; just like a coach once told me when I told him the other team in numbers was much smaller than us and he said, they may only have 35 players but they're the right 35.  Sorry to high jack the 6-2A thread and I will go back to my area, but it's lonely over there.

  13. Before I "hit the hay" I do want to put my "two cents in." Excluding Shelby County, this is by far the weakest district/region in West Tennessee, not debatable. A few teams are trying to find their identity. Jackson Christian are obviously rebuilding but it is taking forever. Got to accept the fact that JC is not a football school. But the Eagles are taking "baby steps" to get better and I appreciate that, but I want to see them take a "adult step." Halls has "one dominant athlete" but sometimes on the field, it may feel like it'll be 11 vs 1 when you'll watch Halls football. Gibson County, ehh. They have a sophomore that rush for over 1,000 yards last year as a freshman. I want to see Gibson County hit the playoffs, it'll be great for Dyer, Rutherford,

north Gibson County, and the entire West Tennessee. Have to admit, we all want to see them, Middleton, and Fayette-Ware play a game in November. Trinity, entire line is back on both sides, great. Other than that??? The Jamboree will let me know. Adamsville, traditional team. McKenzie, Comer will get those boys ready.

    1. Adamsville

    2. McKenzie

    3. JCS

    4. TCA

    5. Gibson County

    6. Halls

P.S. USJ will be a great fit into this region, someone please recruit them to do this!!!!

There are my 2 cents, I got 98 cents left!

Anybody going to take his bait besides me? Why would USJ be a great fit?

  14. You know, I don't have a dog in this fight but I just wanted to say- I have watched the Adamsville faithful and the TCA faithful go at it for years and for the most part, it's been good respectable banter and lots of fun watching y'all.  It's got to be hard for fathers of former players, like TCAIntense and even former players this time of year when their sons or the former players themselves are not getting ready for the very near season.  It's tough to fill all of that time you used to spend watching, coaching, traveling, anticipating and all the other stuff which was done prior to and during the season.  Hope y'all enjoy the upcoming season even though you have entered a new different season of your own as well as your kids.  Please keep posting because it was entertaining and very informative.  Good luck to all.

  15. I agree on the quarterback because Underwood was really good at scrambling and making

something happen.  I think we have some potential there albeit unproven.  The receivers were

good last year and catching and blocking, but also played alot on defense (Hawks, Jones, etc).  This year the receivers will have to step it up, but I think they can.  Good athletes.  Bodiford was good at RB and cornerback/LB so he will be missed as well.  However, lots of athletes that can step in and I think many more kids will rotate in than in years past.  Lots of excitement and anticipation under the new coach.  Kids really seem to like him.

  16. Coach Nickey is a class guy.  He is very personable with the players and the parents. Plus he brings the background of high school experience with BGA/USJ, collegiate with Ohio State and pro with the Titans.  Also his play on special teams was noteworthy as he would absolutely get after it.  Coach Marley was right last year-- I think he could still suit up and play a game!  I remember one game last year, everyone, including myself, had on a heavy coat, hat, etc.-- it was freezing and the wind was howling.  Coach Nickey is there in his short sleeve blue shirt with a bald head just doing his thing.  Must be that Ohio State training.

Congrats to North Side and we all hope he does extremely well along with North Side.  Really hate to lose him, but glad he's still in town and hopefully winning with a fellow Jackson school.  Good luck guys!
