Now as far as cummings goes, he could very well win next weekend. i have him making the finals but losing a decision to langford. i could be wrong, and wouldn’t be surprised if i am. but it won’t be easy. there’s some solid kids at heavy

I have Langford winning as well.  My original comments were meant to be that Cummings winning it was not as unreasonable as people were making it.

I have not seen the Summit heavyweight, but reading his results, I would pick the winner of him and Cummins to make the finals.  Both of these guys will have a tough road to win it- They wrestle each other in the 2nd round, then most like Keating from Oakland in the semi's, and then finally Langford in the finals.... all in the same afternoon!

  2. I would 2nd that Cummins has a very strong chance of winning heavyweight.  He isn't one of the best technical wrestlers, that's only because he has only been wrestling a few short years. However he is one of the best athletes in the state regardless of weight class.  And, if you look the kid up on any social media platform, he may very well be the strongest heavyweight in the history of the state- even giving up 50+ lbs.

Personally, I think moving up to heavyweight may be his best shot at winning it.   There are several kids at 195 that can hang with him athletically, while also out classing him technically.  At 220, Davis completely out classes him technically (as well as every other 220 in AAA) and is a very strong athlete as well.  Heavyweight may be deep this year with several kids on the same level, but they aren't exactly Kramers, Coffeys, Boykins, or Reagans.  I don't think any of the other heavy weights match his athleticism, nor do I think any of them are much more technically gifted.

I will say that him having limited matches at heavyweight may play a factor, as there is quite a bit of strategy in wrestling a guy that weights 50 pounds more than you do.  Yes he is strong enough to handle the weight difference, but in certain situations it's not really a matter of strength, but sometimes simply just pure physics.

  3. If you seed the 8 region champs the bracket would be:

    Top Half:

    #1 seed vs #7 seed's runner-up

    #8 seed vs #2 seed's runner-up

    #5 seed vs #3 seed's runner-up

    #4 seed vs #6 seed's runner-up

    Bottom Half:

    #3 seed vs #5 seed's runner up

    #6 seed vs #4 seed's runner up

    #7 seed vs #1 seed's runner up

    #2 seed vs #8 seed's runner up

It's a nice thought but will never happen.

In the past, they have mentioned making it a requirement for all coaches to put all their information into track and using track to seed the tournament.  This is the year of change, the tournament is half the size, if I were coaching I would push for it!

Is there a deadline to have these completed? When should we know these (probably) teams?

    Substate deadline is Saturday.

Some regions weren't scheduled to wrestle until Thursday of this week though.  So those substate matches won't be finalized until Friday night or even Saturday (maybe?).

Quad 4 will be Summit vs Arlington (Probably) and Independence vs Collierville (Probably)

Thank you!  I would assume Wilson Central will be coming out of 3, but am not sure who the other contenders there are.  I always forget how regions 5, 6, and 7 are aligned.

  7. So how  are state duals / substates shaping up?

Quad 1 is Science hill vs Seymour or Anderson County (Most likely), and Halls (Most likely) vs D.B.

Quad 2 Cleveland and Bradley advance to State duals

    Quad 3 ???

Quad 4 is Summit vs ???   Independence vs ???

That would be hard to pull off unless the boys/girls are during different days. A lot of the coaches who coach the boys and girls are the same for both teams.

Agreed.  But I think most coaches would choose trying to make that work if it means they get to have a state tournament.  I am only guessing,  as we are in a state of unknown.  I think if D2, Girls, and A/AA were all done at their own location then they could meet some venues' capacity restrictions.  AAA may have to be modified entirely.  Take that with a grain of salt though, I am in no way "in-the-know" with these things, just an old man's speculations.

  9. Scott has the Halls program turned around.  Its been an odd year for everyone, but I believe them being a 1 loss team is being overlooked.  With that said, I think central wins this rematch.  However, Halls does not lose a lot next year, and will be the 3rd year with the head coach.  I expect them to step up to that next level next year where they are with the best teams in Knox County.

  10. Looks like the Halls and Gibbs wrestling rivalry flame will be getting rekindled.  I doubt its anything like Cleveland/Bradley, but those used to be some pretty exciting duals for this area. Should be much more intense now that the winner has a strong chance of winning a state title while the other stays at home.

  11. Will invitationals/individual tournaments happen this year?  Talking to coaches in my area, due to capacity restrictions at their schools, invitationals that used to have 20+ teams are now turning into dual tournaments with 6 to 10 teams.  Is this true for the whole state? Or just Knoxville area?

  12. It appears the two big dogs (Central and South Doyle) are down a little after last year.  The other two competitive teams (Gibbs and Halls) may be up....  Could mean this region is a 4 horse race.  Also, I know region 2 and 3 are both the Greater Knoxville area, but they don't meet until the semi-finals.  So all the talk about how region 3 is better, and tougher, and yada yada should just be saved until Thanksgiving.

Tell me how many of those there was because I would bet you they didn't split it because of what you are saying! So to back that up please bring out the facts because again that's not at all what I heard from some coaches on the reason for the split for all college divisions and I can go back and look up all the champs and it's  littered with wrestlers from Oklahoma, Okie State, Iowa and what not and it has grown exceedingly even more the past few years. I mean if you think UTC can recruit even close to the same caliber wrestler that Penn State or Iowa or Ohio State can I am not sure that you are all there. There's a much bigger difference between the private schools compared to big and large school. One which can actually house their students, pay their coaching staffs handsomely (or why do you think Yost jumps from Cleveland to McCallie?) they have as much room in some of their athletic centers compared to some schools have in their entire building(I trained in the SAC so I promise I understand what it means to a kid walking into that beautiful building compared to walking into the Soddy Daisy wrestling arena which is probably older than you are.) oh and also let me know how many wrestlers the kids club for both McCallie and Baylor have in them because I have seen you as well as a lot of supposedly knowledgeable people on here State that youth wrestling is the lifeblood for a school to be competitive and in my 25 plus years in wrestling in TN as well as North Georgia I haven't seen a ton of youth kids developed through a youth program for one of those private schools. Now I do with Father Ryan and to a point now CBHS, but seems like to me Baylor and McCallie wait until the kids are developed and go out and pick them up when the hard work for years has been put through.

  14. There are a lot of assumptions in these arguments, and a lot of people with very short memories of who won state titles before the splits came into affect.  I would agree that this year, if  there was 1 state tournament for all schools, the majority of state champions would have came from D2 schools (I'd say 6 or 7-not quite 10).  However, If you look in your programs at the years all schools were combined, you will see that the majority of individual state champions came from public schools (AAA or A/AA now).  To call D2 "the big dogs" is pretty laughable, as it wasn't that long ago that D2 was referred to as the "JV State Tournament" by most coaches.  Also- when you look at kids in D2 that used to be in public schools and feeder programs for public schools, how can you say that the better coaches are in private schools?

Anyone who would like can go to a d2 school. Make the grades and pay the money and you too can run with the big dogs. For the love of GOD please stop beating this horse!

The level of sarcasm in this post is quite dignified, as this degree of humor is unappreciated by most in our society.  Kudos to you!
