My bad. I don't know how I got 28 losses. Trying to multi-task got me in trouble.
The point stands, though. Do you hand a 2 time state champion to a favorite son with a Derek Dooley-type record as HC? 12-19 in 3 years, and 6-18 since halfway through his first year?
I just don't see them doing that. I think they promote from within. If they do go outside, they hire someone with a lot of success and a name. Hiring from within might leave a few assistants on staff jealous, but hiring an outsider might royally upset the apple card and alienate them all.
I've heard rumors that Ballard is going to go to Dobyns-Bennett as an assistant now for less responsibility and a big raise. We'll see if there's any truth to that.
Coaches with stellar records all share at least 1 of 2 things. Really good talent and/ or a great staff. Greeneville has both. Johnny Painter could be the Head Coach at Greeneville, and they would still win. They could just hire a name... a lot of “names” are talent chasers who only coach at places with above average talent. That would be a real fit. I do agree with hiring from within. Obviously you must think Baugh has a shot, why else you come on here and constantly throw out a negative record. An overall record can be misleading, Baugh’s biggest fault would be that he took the Cherokee job in the first place.
No truth on Ballard going to Kingsport. If he was going to continue to coach football, he wouldn’t have resigned in the first place. If he coaches again, it will down the road a few years.

You think the current staff will work for Cody Baugh?????? If they don’t promote from within there will be a lot of fall out!!!!
Hammonds began at Greeneville in 2005, I think. Spradlen started in 2007, and I’m pretty sure Baugh did then too. McCurry’s first year. Pretty sure that is when Ballard came back as OC.
Baugh and Hammonds both left after 2015 season. Hammonds was an assistant at Gatlinburg-Pittman. Hammonds came back in 2017.
To me, hiring from within has Spradlen’s name written all over it. Baugh did go out on a limb to be a head coach. I’m guessing that was Hammonds’ initial plan as well. Not sure why Hammonds didn’t stay, and Baugh went to a difficult place to win.
Basically, we don’t really know anything. All we know is that the Devils staff is strong, and there are 3 popular names. 2 current staff members, and a young coach who is about as close to the current staff as an outsider could get. Should all be interesting.

Greeneville still powers on for years to come. Things won’t change in Greeneville. The same state power year in and out. Like I’ve said Ballard did his coaching from January to July imo. The coaches we have in place will continue that.
The job comes down to Spradlin and Hammonds imo. That’s the reason neither were named interim head coach.
Now we have to keep everyone on staff and no one get hard feelings for not getting the job and leaving.
Who will run the offense? I have always heard that Hansel has no desire to be a Coordinator.

I hope this is true we could def use another playmaker .. but I was told today that Ballard will be making the announcement tomorrow sometime and is stepping down as head coach
It is now official, just saw it on Twitter.

Eddie Spradlen would be great too! Being a head coach may take him away from the weightroom though. This will be very interesting to follow. If this happens, would Ballard be part of the committee to select a new guy? I just can’t see them going after somebody random from the outside.

Dan is a Great man and a great football coach. I played underneath him at LB when he first came to Greeneville. Dan, Eddie, or Coach Bentley would all be great hires if Ballard were to step down. I think the Dark Horse would be Cody Baugh since he also know the system and the 2nd best QB Greeneville has ever had numbers wise and is a great offensive mind when it comes to getting the ball in playmakers hands.
Regardless, I would like to see Baugh back wearing Greene Devil green!

So what is the word as 2019 gets started (for schools) tomorrow? Is the schedule finalized? When will Spring practice take place? It will be another hard working off season if I was a betting man.

I think there are quite a few for the Toyota East vs West game though.
A few of the guys that probably would have played in this have already moved on to basketball.

Well, one thing I've learned about coach Ballard in the 10 short years ive been around him, is that he likes to "Drive" alot more than he likes to "Ride". Having said that, I personally have no clue what the man wants or is going to do. I will just say this. If he decides to come back next year, It will be alot of fun seeing what this same staff can do with a team most everyone OUTSIDE the program thinks will be a huge step back from the one we just all watched. If he decides that this was his last season as the Head Devil, all I can personally say is Thanks Coach for what you've done here with the program, the kids and the "culture" of Greene Devil Football, good luck in all your future endeavors and Make sure you're back at Burley the day they rededicate the field in your name......."Caine Ballard field @ Burley Stadium" or something the like
Worst case scenario, if Coach Ballard moves on... who takes the reigns? Obviously wouldn’t want to change much. Do any of the current guys have any head coaching experience?

Dobyns-Bennett would be one of the last places that Coach Ballard would go... that’s a rebuild that is going to be hard to turn around.

I heard that this was Coach Ballard's last year? Any truth in that?
I have heard that too, it would be a great time to ‘ride off into the sunset’.

One thing that the youth has is... SPEED! Some of the JV skill kids can flat out fly!
-
They will still be very good!!! More returners than people realize!

Besides Witten and Ballard, who are some other names to consider in this area? Who are assistants of both that are possibilities? A younger coach would possibly be very good for DB!

DB went out of the area to get themselves a new boys basketball coach last year and it's worked out pretty well for them so far. My guess is they'll do the same to find a new football coach. Ballard isn't going to leave Greeneville. He's building something special there and his son is just a junior.
Out of the area? He went to high school at... Greeneville. Then was at Jefferson County. Not very far out of the area.

Just now learning about this coachT thing... where have I been?
You guys are talking about the Crockett sophomore QB, have you seen Cherokee's sophomore QB? Man that kid can play!

Ballard will sit back and travel to watch Cade play for the next 4 years. No way he gets back into the grind of coaching before that.
To underachieve, that means you are better than your opponent? Correct? Reading your post made me go back and look at the past seasons on Coacht.
It’s hard to find teams that Cherokee beat that they were supposed too. Volunteer is about it. Sullivan Central in 2016. It’s hard to find games that they lost, that they shouldn’t have lost. According to the websites records, Cherokee is traditionally really bad for having obvious talent cycles. Winning record, .500 season, bad record on a consistent cycle.
