I would argue the opposite.  There is nothing unfair about a true blind draw.  Big difference in unlucky versus unfair.

In my opinion, the bigger problem is the lack of transparency.  TSSAA could d a live draw on Sunday before the tournament like they did before COVID.  Even if you just stream to coaches and media, it would eliminate even the possibility of unfairness.

I guess I can partially agree with your definition of the issue. It is "unlucky" for sure....but "luck" should not be a part of the discussion at this point in the season. To me, it reeks of laziness on the part of the TSSAA...let's just pull some names out of a hat (behind closed doors) and see who plays each other for the state title. Really? Thats what you do on the playground. Do some work and dig in there and make it a great tournament. While maybe not an inherently "unfair" process... I do think it is absolutely "unfair" that in several brackets teams that would be considered one of the top two or three in the state play in round one for elimination, while teams with double digit losses battle it out to move on. It potentially sets up lopsided championship matches. The two best teams in the state should be left standing to battle it out at the end. Not just a good team and a "lucky" team. Yes I understand, you gotta win what is put in front of you regardless, I just personally think this system is not set up to produce the best tournament experience possible.

  2. Why doesnt the TSSAA actually do some work and come up with  ranking system for the top 8? The blind draw is ridiculous. Some of these matchups should be potential state championship games, not first rounders. It's ridiculous. I don't have a dog in the hunt, but man it just seems so unfair. There has to be a better way, this just seems lazy.

Wow.....When was the last time this happened?

I don't think ever??? I was wondering if maybe the development of club ball in the area helped at all? I know that A5 and K2 both moved into that area not too long ago. But three really good squads!

Kudos to Sale Creek; they're a great team and deserved that win! Loretto played great for having to fight back yesterday. Didn't see much fatigue out there today. With only two seniors, they should be back next year.

On a side note, this has been some of the worst officiating in a volleyball state Tournament in a long time. Not even talking about against Loretto, but across the board in the Single A Tournament. Too worried about being an authority figure instead of their consistency. The one for the Championship wasn't bad but clearly asserted that he was in charge. You are not the focus of the match.

Final note, other than Milan and Gibson, this seemed to be a very good Tournament as far as caliber of teams. The future is bright for volleyball!

Yes, officiating was awful at Rockvale. Really hard to watch them do that in a state tournament.

And yes, the caliber of play was good all around. Even the two teams you mentioned had bright spots considering what has come out of the west in the past.

  5. Congrats to state champion Sale Creek who defeats Loretto 3-1. They have won 50 matches this year and only lost two. One to Signal Mountain who will possibly win AA later today and the 2nd to Pope in GA who was ranked #9 in the nation at that time. They really are a super solid club. Congrats Lady Panthers!

  6. Loretto pulls a MAJOR gut check today winning three games vs South Greene, East Robertson and Harpeth. The East Rob and Harpeth games were real battles, down to the wire…and they pulled them out. Bad thing is…their reward is a tough as nails Sale Creek team who is fresh, rested and looking for their 50th win of the season and their first state championship tomorrow morning at 10am. Sale Creek is very good. They look beatable at times, yet no one can seem to do it. LoL. I can’t image Loretto has a lot left in the tank, but I guess we will find out in the morning! Good luck to all!

I will once again say that the officiating at Rockvale for the single A tourney has been dismal for several matches. Tonight was no exception. No team was immune. The calls were all over the place. It was awful. Got to do way better for the kids once we get to this level.

  7. Houston with a valiant effort in the losers bracket, but just ran out of gas I think. Not to take anything from Nolensville at all, as their magical season continues. This was a team that many weren't sure would make it out of the District, much less be playing for a state title. I still look for Cleveland to repeat, but what a story the Knights have been in the last 3 weeks. And even though Cleveland dropped them 3-0 in the Final Four, it was very close… so you never know what will happen. It’s why we play the games!

  8. Whoever had Valor Prep coming out of the losers bracket to beat Creek Wood better be playing the lottery. I didn’t see that one coming at all. I had seen them earlier in the season and thought they were good, but they exceeded all expectations. Congrats to them! Signal Mountain is a very good team who has a couple of real beasts. They beat Valor earlier in the tourney, but with it all on the line, you never know how it will shake out!

    What’s your prediction for tomorrow

I’ve always thought it was Cleveland’s to lose. But Nolensville has gone on an incredible run here in the post season, so you never know! As good as all the teams are that are left it’s gonna be a BOSS that comes thru the losers bracket to make it to the finals.

  10. First two teams to join the Final Four are Sale Creek with a gutsy 3-1 win over Loretto, and Harpeth who had a gut check of their own with a 3-1 win over a much improved CSAS.

First two out are Milan (who surprised everyone by stealing  a set from Sale Creek yesterday) and Gibson Co who gave a valiant effort against South Greene.

Also, some of the WORST officiating ever today at Rockvale. Both the Loretto/Sale Creek and the Harpeth/CSAS game had some head scratcher and downright wrong/awful calls. Gotta be better.

I would say that lackluster match between South Greene and Gibson county wasn’t so lackluster… if I’m not mistaken south Greene is #1 in the polls and Gibson county battled.

Yes, you are mistaken. South Greene *was* ranked 6th in state until they got beat by Harpeth last night. Coach T’s rankings are a suggestion at best since teams don’t tend to update information here and no one seeks it out. A certain ‘other’ website is traditionally much more accurate.

Gibson Co. wins best uni’s in the tourney though (no joke, love the colorway!)

  12. UPSET IN THE MAKING??? Not near over yet, but Milan wins set one vs Sale Creek 25-22. Sale Creek absolutely melted down. Couldn’t get ball over the net to save their lives at the end. Milan has a huge contingency in the stands that are losing their minds.

Sale Creek rights the ship and jumps all over the Bulldogs in sets two thru four to take the match in the manner we all thought they might. Set one comes to show, you gotta come ready to win at this level!

Every team fights through injuries at some point during the grind of the season. Eagleville’s battle just happened at tournament time.

Arguably their best two players were severely hobbled by ankle injuries heading into this week. Their Senior setter and Junior OS. I heard/read that they had an 8th grader, 2 freshmen, and a sophomore setter in their main rotation during the Region and sectional games.

I watched the East Rob stream and will say that East Rob played very well especially defensively. They earned their trip to Mirfreesboro.

I was wondering. That’s tough. I have not seen East Rob play but heard they were good…had seen Eagleville a couple of times and they were definitely stout. You hate to see one of them sit regardless after such a good season.

Summertown also arguably had their best player on the bench all year due to injuries. You hate to see that happen to anyone.

  14. Cleveland returns to defend their title

Brentwood and Nolensville cruise to get back to state

West Ridge sneaks in with a 3-2 win over Hardin Valley

After being runner ups in AA last year East Hamilton survives against a good Oakland team to advance in AAA this year

    Maryville, Houston and Collierville return
