Always a surprise when a school doesn't hire someone with a track record of success with a group of kids.

Sounds like the middle school coach deserved a shot. Also, makes it tough on the new coach if he doesn't go in and win right away because I am sure some folks in the community wanted the middle school coach to get it.

    Since leaving UTM (35-117) :

    Blytheville 14/15: 9-10

    Germantown15/16, 16/17, 17/18: 26-4, 10-19, 14-13

    Kenwood 18/19, 19/20, 20/21: 18-9, 17-14, 6-10 (schedule on CoachT)

Take his time as head coach in college out and he is 100 - 79 as a high school head coach.

West Carroll position opening up as their coach takes the Lexington job.

Good luck to Coach Fitch. It could be a tough spot to coach and there will be a lot of pressure after everything I read on the last coach being let go after a successful season.

So the number of head coaching positions stays the same just a different school

South Gibson hadn’t been that successful but I still think it is an attractive job. Hire a coach that will play basketball year round and teach quality fundamentals at a young age. There will be some that will play other sports but they will either catch up or miss the bus. More games they play the more bodies that get their chance as well and creates competition and more effort.

Any idea who is up for the South Gibson Job. I hear their girls Middle School Coach applied. Anybody else?

    1. USJ- Lots of resources and being a private school you can have talent move to the school if you get the right coach. Lots of tough competition though.

    2. Milan- Lots of good athletes to pick from. Have to get past being a football school to be successful.

    3. South Gibson- Ability to build on success from last few years. Going to be tough to compete in AAA, especially if talent dips at all.

    4. JCM- How many schools in JMCSS can be good at one time? South Side and Madison have been really good lately. Is there enough talent for JCM to be good. What classification do they end up in?

    5. Lexington- Not sure how much better they can be then what they've been the last few years. Sounds like politics might be a problem too.

    6. North Side- See concerns with JCM, plus questions on support from fan base and administration.

Don't think there is a lot that separates these jobs. Good coach could make any of these successful. Bad coach could make them a trainwreck. I don't see a home run position in the bunch.

    That is a great assessment!

I agree. There is a reason the Westview’s, Gibson County’s, Summertown’s, Loretto’s, Macon County’s, Clarkrange’s, McMinn Central’s, Upperman’s, South Green’s, Bradley Central’s and Riverdale’s of the world are always in the mix. They have great feeder programs and cultures. And the communities and businesses will help aggressive coaches generate revenues for booster clubs. And most parents will too. Especially South Gibson. Look at what Peabody football has done. They had zero Gold Balls until 2014. Made great hires and they have won 4 in the last 7 years. Tim Haney and the Peabody administration gets an A + for making great hires.

success is attractive for sure. when you win they will come.

Milan boys job got much better by new districts and regions. Will have a chance to get to sub-state on yearly basis.

just looked at their district. Westview, Union City, Gibson County and Huntingdon will not be push overs by no means but you are right. They won't be playing Dyersburg, South Gibson, and Crockett. Region is definitely better for them. No south side.

  8. since there is no movement. Out of the jobs open in West TN which jobs are the best? Rank Them.

Open Jobs that I know about:

North Side, Milan, South Gibson, USJ, Lexington, New JCM

    I got

South Gibson, New JCM, North Side, Lexington, USJ, Milan

Girls coach had to leave because her child is sick. Boys coach I honestly don’t know why, but boys job would always have to contend with Memphis boys so it is tougher. Girls job has the student population. Needs to set up feeder programs to the max and get all ages on the floor teaching fundamentals and camps. Need a culture change where basketball is available early and often. One’s that are true basketball players will get ahead and the all sport players will have no choice but to step their training up as well. They have the talent. Culture change is needed, IMO. Need a high energy coach that is eat up with basketball and winning is the only option. More kids going into that school than any other in rural West Tennessee for sure.

Hate to hear about the girls coach having to leave that way. So both coaches left and didn't get asked to leave. That is good.

South Gibson girls generated a bunch of quality last time it came open. The Real Estate Market in Medina is hot as a firecracker. No telling who has applied for these jobs. That school is a sleeping giant. No reason for any sport in that school not to be a powerhouse.

Really? Why are the coaches leaving?

I personally hadn’t heard a thing about the job. With her living there and I am sure her kids going to school there it would sure seem almost a certainty she would apply. But you never know what they will do and who they will hire.

West Tennessee jobs are unbelievable this year both girls and boys. Jobs everywhere with very little movement? Schools will be left out if they don't move fast. I think jobs will start being filled this week and next.

  12. Just found this article from a paper called the Lexington Progress. I assume a local paper. Not sure.

On Friday, March 12, 2021, members of the Henderson County School Board discussed the status of Keith Runyon as head basketball coach of the Lexington High School Tigers basketball team. After discussion, it was determined that the majority of the board at that time had decided it was time to go in a different direction with the program and to make a change with the head coaching position. Keith Runyon, who had been at the helm for the last three years, was informed that he would be relieved of his head coaching duties of the Lexington High School Tigers basketball program.

In speaking with Keith Runyon after he had been informed of the decision that was made, he shared, “I want everyone to know this was strictly a basketball decision. I have done absolutely nothing unethical or immoral and I will continue to teach at Lexington High School. I praise the Good Lord for blessing me with the opportunity to coach this great group of kids. They had a great season finishing 19-8 and made it to a district championship game. I love the kids and pray God continues to bless them and grow them into young men. I sure will miss being their coach.”

The Lexington Progress staff was also able to talk with the Director of Schools for Henderson County. In sharing with us, Steve Wilkinson stated, “Last Friday, the majority of the Henderson County School Board thought the LHS Basketball program needed to head in a different direction and with a fresh start. Keith Runyon was relieved of his basketball coaching duties at that time.”
