  1. From what I've been hearing, there are some injuries that could hamper Covington. I also hope that last week's showing in the jamboree is not repeated. I'm sure Kirby will clean up the mistakes and Covington will be ready to play Friday night. I think Covington will keep it closer than last year, however, I feel that Munford has too much talent and experience and will pull this one out by a touchdown or so. As with an rival game, anything could happen. GO CHARGERS!

I hate to break it to you, but east nashville will absolutely embarrass Covington. It will be a rerun of last night and apparently the Munford game as well. East Nashville has the athletes to match up with Covington and thus, will win easily. That game will not be close.

Covington will never be expected to beat Alcoa, that is a fairy tale, but Covington went to back to back state title games not that long ago. That should be their goal every year. They can beat up on their region teams that they play, simply because Ripley, millington, bolivar, and whoever else do not have the horses to beat them, but Haywood and Munford do have those horses and you saw those results. An absolute beatdown by both teams.... Maybe that is the new Covington, I dont know. I simply am on the outside looking in. But It was not that long ago when I would make the drive to Covington and watch them beat really good teams in dominating fashion. I hope they get back to that. I am a fan of good football and Covington used to play a bunch of good football.

JoeBlow, Haywood's talent does not match up with Covington's...it's superior bottom line. They were bigger, faster, and deeper. They consistently put multiple kids into the SEC/ACC and other FBS teams. Covington cannot say that. As far as Munford goes, Covington made a lot of mistakes that contributed to that 28-7 final including multiple onside kicks and turnovers resulting in short fields for the Cougars and keeping the ball out of Covington's hands. Yes, Munford's D performed very well against Covington, but IMO that game is closer if both teams are mistake free with no turnovers. And remember, both, Haywood and Munford are UNDEFEATED teams in higher classifications...everyone else, Covington has dominated.

I do believe that East Nashville has more athletes than Covington and probably should win that game if it happens. I'm not gonna bet on it though, because I've seen a Covington team go to Nashville and play a PC with much more talent and come out on top and then play them within a point a couple years later. These Nashville teams see a lot of the same thing all year and are sometimes surprised by different offenses late in the playoffs. So I'm not gonna say Covington will be embarrassed whatsoever at this point. These are insider takes btw. You may be right, we shall see.

Covington can beat teams with far less talent, but they simply cannot beat teams with equal or more talent than them. They run an offense with zero scheme and the coaching staff does very little to put the team in advantageous situations when playing better teams. It seems as if the game plan last night was to run the ball up the middle and then hopefully use that to open up other parts of the offense. A blind man could have seen that Covington was not going to run the ball up the middle consistently on Haywood.

The Covington coaching staff is fine but they are in over their heads when it comes to trying to out scheme a team better than them. They simply cannot do it. It’s been that way since Coach Wheeler left for East Tennessee. I’m not sure Covington has won a game where they were at a talent disadvantage since then.

haywood is a great team, and there is no reason to hang your heard when losing to them, but I expect more out of Covington as an outsider and I’m sure their fans do as well. If 8/9 regular season wins is the goal, then you will get that ever year at Covington. If state championship appearances is the goal, good luck. That’s not happening.

I agree with parts of this. However, the gap between Alcoa and other 3A teams is massive. Covington will walk to the semis this year and having a home game against an East Nashville more than likely could go either way in my opinion. I think silver balls are very attainable with this team.

It’s interesting that some of our fans think the Chargers will have to throw the ball to win. Two years ago, Covington went to Brownsville and came away with the win. How? By running the ball.

Covington has two running backs who have had great success running the ball. Per the Daily Memphian, Skylan Smith has 991 rushing yards through 8 games. He’s averaging 9.5 yards per carry and 124 yards per game. Jamarion Dowell has 935 yards total, with averages of 10.6 per carry and 117 per game. Dowell also has 19 rushing TDS.

I think that Coach Kirby will run these guys tonight and if Haywood stops them, then the Tomcats will get the win. Let’s see what happens.

Also, one year ago they went to Brownsville and came away with a shut-out. How? Having no passing attack at all and being one dimensional. Haywood has a lot more talent than they did 2 years ago and we had an E. Flowers that could power his way up the middle at that time. This is a different game and we have a QB that is able to sling it, so I believe that will be a key to winning if we do. Just my opinion. Hoping for a good, clean game. GO CHARGERS!

  5. I think to compete in this game, Covington will need to come out with more of a balanced attack with at least 10-15 pass attempts and a strong up the middle ground and pound effort. If Covington tries to do the normal Wing-T thing, I think it could be a long night. We see the Wing-T faulter some when Covington goes up against a similar talent level, which I think Haywood has plenty of. I believe our defense will be the toughest that Haywood has faced so far, however, they will still score plenty of points. Covington needs more than 30 to win this game IMO, that'll be a tough task. Looking forward to the atmosphere and a great game. GO CHARGERS!

  6. Looking like it's going to be a BIG atmosphere tomorrow night! The weather will be PERFECT and they are planning for an Alumni Tailgate for Munford and Covington with a DJ, food trucks and vendors during pregame. I hear they are expecting 5000-7000 people, so get there early for descent parking. 1 MORE DAY!

  7. Not gonna lie, I'm concerned about this game. I think Munford is way underrated and they have a STUD at quarterback and Covington has yet to figure out their offense. If Covington thinks they come into this game with an easy W, it's going to be a long night for the Chargers. I have a lot of faith in the Covington defense and I think turnovers will be the key to this ballgame. I'm sure Kirby has a few tricks up his sleeve as well. GO CHARGERS! It should be an awesome atmosphere this Thursday.

  8. I think Covington has a lot of key pieces to make a deep run this year. I watched the South Side scrimmage and the first team defense is very very stout. Over the entirety of the their reps, SS was held to negative yardage. The offensive starters for Covington could get big chunks and put together drives but seemed to have trouble getting into the endzone (pretty sure that will be fixed). AC Mason picked the ball and turned on that next level speed that he possesses when needed, he will be fun to watch! I think that Covington's QB situation is better this year and the line has good size. They team is physically very strong and puts in a lot of work in the weight room.

I fell that this team can make the SHIP if they can stay healthy. I have done a little research on Alcoa, and apparently they have, again, a very strong team ranked 3rd in the state (all classifications). I'd predict an Alcoa/Covington title game. Ready for the season to start.

Is the Covington Jamboree only Covington vs UC? Are there any other teams playing?

  9. Alcoa has a distinct recipe for it's success and it's not about how many players are on their roster. Other schools/towns could do it but many just don't. Alcoa has an excellent youth football program. These kids have been wearing those colors since they were able to play football and the high school is in direct involvement with the youth and the middle school programs. These kids have been playing championship football, together, for over a decade in many instances and winning is culture. While Anytown HS Football has been together for maybe four. Alcoa is essentially preparing for state title runs 12-13 years in advance. An excellent booster program is also key to success, money will get you the necessary staff and equipment needed to have a consistent product on the field. Alcoa has all of this and it can be replicated with a dedicated coaching staff, booster club, and football loving town.

  10. 1 more day!!! Looking forward to making the drive to D'Burg, eating some wings at Mojo's, and hopping over to that nice stadium Dyersburg has. Covington needs to be extra focused. Many of you may not know that AC Mason's mother and Grandmother were shot after the game last week and in critical condition at the Med. I know they will be on the hearts and minds of many players out there Friday night. Last I heard, AC was going to attempt to play because that's what his mother would want. I hope the good Lord gives him and his family strength as they go through this tough time.

It should be a great game. I think it will definitely be a one score ballgame and each team is going to have to play without mistakes.

Jalen Fayne is our Swiss Army knife. He does some of everything. I expect Tanner Stewart to play QB. Fayne has played there but only when Stewart was hurt. Fayne will be on the field for almost every play - running back, defensive back, punt returner, kick returner, edge blocker on place kicks.

The interesting change for Covington since we last played Dyersburg is the insertion of Emarrion Flowers at fullback. He was moved to the defensive line this year, after being a big factor last year when we beat Haywood.  Coach Kirby has put him back at fullback for a couple of games now. Versus Ripley last night, he was a force.  He rumbled for a lot of yards up the middle and the Tigers could not stop him. D’burg will see that in the film, but I’ll be interested to see how they try to stop him.

I hate to say it but if we run the same ole offensive scheme (like last night), Dyersburg will win this game. We threw the ball once, ONCE, and it was a bad throw. We can’t be one-dimensional from here on out. We will need to play the offense we played in the scrimmage against Huntington and Fayne ran that offense. He ran and he threw the ball around a lot and we hammered Huntington with it….and then it just disappeared. Hopefully, they’ve been working on it because, if not, we may not score many points and this game could be over early,

I think it would be a bad matchup in the trenches for Covington. Dburg would stand a better chance in my opinion but neither would probably beat them.

My thoughts exactly. I think Covington can beat Dyersburg, even though I believe Dyersburg is hitting on all cylinders and it will be a close game. However, you are right, if Covington somehow advances to the title game, I do not see it being close like in years past. We are one dimensional and Alcoa will exploit that similar to how Haywood did. Unless, we have an ace in the pocket (as Kirby sometimes does), we can't play with Alcoa and Dyersburg would probably match up better with them. I will say this, Kirby has been putting E. Flowers back there and fullback from time to time over the past 2 games and he is a bruiser that can hammer 5-10 yards a carry up the middle. He's the main reason we beat Haywood last year just pounding up the middle. I was wondering why I haven't seen him on offense all year, but maybe he's the ACE that Kirby intends on using deep in the playoffs.
