Everyone knew this is where this hire was going, local news stations said it in their story about Holier Than Thou Eddie retiring.

The program really needed new energy and someone that is willing to play the game, much like Saban getting out at Alabama. This hire feels more like the easy way out as opposed to the right hire. People respected the previous coach and he could sell on his reputation of being an upstanding coach.

Unfortunately, that all goes out the window when he steps away, even if they keep him around in the background as some have mentioned. His son may try to keep things the same, but doesn't have the years of goodwill built up to sell to incoming players. It is going to be tough for him to succeed with all the private schools circling, waiting to attack.

It seems now is the time to attack and it seems like they are if what others are saying about them losing incoming Freshmen.

It feels like the principal and AD did a disservice to the program by taking the easy way out instead of getting someone that is qualified to take the program to the next level.  Everything I have seen says Holier Than Thou Eddie retired so someone could bring renewed energy to Fairygut. This hire feels like the status quo will stay intact for as long as the supporters will put up with losing football games.

From my perch at West High,

It would be easier on your part and more satisfying for the rest of us if you would just to have diarrhea on your keyboard. You’re typing into the void about a man who is universally respected by multiple generations and people from all walks of life, and you are who exactly? Someone who posts in an anonymous chat room about high school football? Don’t feel the need to respond to those questions because no one cares about the answers. Regardless if you hate or love Eddie Courtney or that his son was hired to continue the work of that program, all you can ever do is watch as they’re remembered and you’re not.

  2. From my perch at West High,

We like to pay ours the going rate on Sutherland but then again we like winning gold balls and also like winning the first game of the year. My question for my Bearden High folks is why pay Abernathy, a glorified Starbucks employee for Jeremy Pruitt and Kevin Lane who is a solid assistant, over ten thousand dollars each per KCS to run the defense?

I’m not sure if Abernathy is still a barista but last I heard Kevin installs light fixtures.

Well, I mean you’re on the booster club, so why don’t you go ahead and tell us how much the booster club lets him have yearly.

From my perch at West High,

Just a word of advice, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

Bearden has 30 coaches on the sideline. The booster club’s tax return must weigh ten pounds.

Yep. And about to get even better, from what I am hearing.

From my perch at West High,

Hearing a lot of the same, three or four QBs have transferred in from what I hear. That has been a problem over there for a while now. We benefitted this past year from a linebacker (great young man) transferring into West that had been playing out of position at Bearden as the QB.

  5. From my perch at West High,

Opportunists will find ways to use this to serve their agendas, I think we can all agree on that. Having raised two boys in a fortunate situation, I have concerns about this unrelated to recruiting in fact I don’t think that is the tip of the tip to the iceberg. Putting money in young people’s pockets has a lot of ramifications and they’re not always positive.

Hey Heisenbaby, most are in the know that Bearden football is out of control. Not going to get much better. Very bad mix of players and coaches coming in fast to a program that just changed directions real fast and an  inexperienced administration that listened to parents/boosters and that administration can't change  directions now because that would admit they made a mistake in this experiment. Parents in the program have big disagreements in how the program is operated now.

From my perch at West High,

Can confirm. The Bearden parents I know have told me there are some concerns but I doubt anything will change for now. After watching the Thursday rivalry game, the biggest hurdle Bearden faces as always is getting over the Farragut hump. Both teams play strong defensively. At West we benefitted from having Kevin Lane immensely for quite some time so I could be biased. All that Bearden lacks compared to Farragut is offensive ability and in particular QB play which has become Farragut’s calling card.

  7. From my perch at West high,
I’ll take Kingsport in this matchup. Bearden’s pass game looked nonexistent against Farragut. QB hasn’t gotten much better since last year, hard to improve arm strength or lack there of. Everyone knows they can’t run the ball. Stupid routes. Kingsport is good up front and offensive skill positions and is always well coached.

Watch out the JJ fan club will come after you. There are more problems at BHS than just hiring and paying Abernathy.

It is so bizarre. I’ve seen stuff on FiveStar and Packervision talking about what all has been done in Year 1 of the Jones era. When did this become college football? HS sports are pretty stable year to year. As evidenced in their performance regardless of blatant recruiting. It’s their job to create disciplined young men we can be proud of. Not build some kind of ridiculous all star team that gets more penalties than completions.

  9. From my perch at West High,

I’ve been staying off the boards because I didn’t want to seem like I was gloating and I didn’t want to jinx anything. I’ve felt a swell of pride ever since the Alcoa win. Central has a good running back but we just need to take care of business tonight and keep everyone healthy. Regardless of who we all support I think we can all agree that West going 10-0 for the first time ever with Maryville and Alcoa on the schedule will be a huge achievement for the school and for the school system. The only regret I have is I won’t be there to see it. My hip has been bothering me again. They’ve got to make it to Chattanooga so I can see them go the full distance.

  10. From my perch at West High,

Having been a parent who contributes to a program’s success in the past when my sons were at West in the late 90’s I can’t imagine the parents at Bearden are overly enthusiastic about paying Abernathy - former UT get back coach a monthly stipend was worth getting more or less the same result Bearden has always gotten - an average season with a loss to Farragut. Just a shoutout to all my Bearden friends I’ve been there and I feel your frustration.

  11. From Gus’s fried on Sutherland, ‘Coach O’ isn’t the only newly minted head coach who uses foul language. Another area high school here in Knox had to change sidelines to cover for the fact they speak poorly to players. Every night I go to sleep I’m glad my two sons didn’t have to play for these clowns. Don’t they know it’s not Halloween yet? It’s a little early to be impersonating football coaches.

  12. From my perch at West high, I am concerned about this one especially with Farragut outlasting Beech the way they did. We definitely won’t be able to have as many penalties as we did last week. I’m not sure of a score prediction but I feel like we are much more athletic than Farragut.

Nice win for the Rebels.  They will only get better as the season goes along.  Bearden looked much improved,   But they have to beat  Murvil twice in a season to do anything.  Refs almost let it get out of hand.

Pretty ho-hum game, but it's also week 1. West looked great in the trenches, on both sides of the football. It'll be interesting to see how their QB's accuracy develops over the course of the season. He does a nice job of stepping up in the pocket and can scramble, but they really struggled at times in the passing game last season. West is a really good football team, and I expect them to be a final four team (at least), but they didn't overwhelm Bearden like I thought they might.

Bearden looks improved, but they have a very long way to go. It will be interesting to see how they develop over the next year or two. Going from being a power running team to a Josh Jones run and shoot offense isn't an easy adjustment.

I’m curious as to what has improved at Bearden because from my perch at West High it looked like the same game as last year. Still a poor performance up front on both sides of the ball, still have poor QB play, and still have ball security issues. Last year it was 24-2 and this year it was 27-7. Same amount of turnovers except this time with an interception run back for a touchdown. What are you seeing that I’m missing?

  14. From a bar on Sutherland, holding penalties and stalls in the red zone on West’s part have made what should have been a blowout a mild drubbing. Still unimpressed with Bearden’s recruiting class after seeing them play on DCM. If the Bulldogs want to cut the cheese with their schedule they’ll need to make a change at QB. Very impressed with #3 for Bearden one of their few bright spots.

  15. From my perch at West High, not only are we healthy, ready, and energized, Coach Brown has these boys locked in ready to take care of business. Lost a handful of players from the 2021 season who will be missed but we have returners ready to step up.  I’m sure @HTV is correct Bearden will be more athletic and it’s the worst kept secret in Knox Co as to why. Saturday will be a glaring reminder that it takes a ball club to win, not an Whitman’s sampler of other schools’ kids.

Resume' is legit! Has won 2 state championships been to a couple more with West and Catholic as a Defensive coordinator (maybe wrong on the catholic possibly position coach). Coached offensive line  and Defensive Ends being a part of some really good Central teams back when he first he started coaching.  Kevin Lane is hard nosed, great ball coach, and a WINNER. If I am Halls I would call him offer him the job and make him say no. If he says no I would offer it to Brent Hughes.

Not talking anything away from KL. Great man and coach but I think Brent Hughes is waiting in the wings for this. Coach Cummings did a great job during his time at Halls and a lot of that couldn’t have been done without Brent. You add in that he’s a Halls boy, should be an easy hire for the administration.

No he has not been HC did not have a degree, but with Bearden doing what they did could open some doors for people like Kevin Lane. I don't know why he would turn it down other than the thought of would you leave West High School or possible private job to go to Halls?

I don’t see any other school doing what Bearden did. From what I’ve heard about the principal at Halls he’s a young common sense guy.

Sounds like you applied for the job and didn’t get it. You seem to have intimate knowledge about this guy and what is role is going to be, so you must be on the inside when an announcement hasn’t been made yet.

Why does a coach have to be in the building to hold a kid accountable? One would think that would be done by punishment after school at practice or workouts.

Everyone keeps talking about how Bearden doesn’t accept transfers, but now it’s gonna be like a college program where whoever wants to come can come and you will be recruited over.  If you  really think that, it shows how our is touch you, or perhaps how bitter you are. So are you saying that every kid that started for Bearden the last few years is zoned for Bearden? I know for a fact that is not true

The guy hasn’t been announced as the head coach and you are already taking about vacated wins, gees dude. Also, when is the last time TSSAA has made a football team vacate wins?

I have no clue if he went to college or not, but it seems like you are saying someone that didn’t go to college isn’t worthy of being a role model. That’s a really pathetic statement by you.

You are slinging a lot of crap with your post. Really sad if you ask me. Seems like this is someone would act if they didn’t get the job.

From my perch at West High I obtain information before things happen. I’m a sore semifinals loser I’ll admit that.

I didn’t mention Bearden being like a college team but since you mentioned it we shut them out during our first game this year and we will repeat that again next year.

The last time a school had to vacate wins was in 2018. That team was Powell.

Please elaborate on these negative impacts?

It would be my genuine pleasure.

Kids won’t have a head coach in the building holding them accountable for their actions.

Kids who have already been working hard will see kids recruited in that play over them.

Kids will hold the bag when wins get vacated when a ineligible player inevitably plays.

Kids won’t have that role model of a college graduate leading their program. - which is important even at a school like Bearden.

Notice how all of these are focused on kids. Something the principal and athletic director seem to have forgotten in the last eight weeks.

So basically you value more a drivers Ed football coach over a football coach with an outside job? Private schools could careless as long as you produce.

*care less. Private schools could care less as long as you produce, careless would be the Bearden administration is careless when it comes to the potential negative impact this will have on the kids in their school.

Or they continue to not make the playoffs in a mediocre district again

4-6, 4-6, 5-7 and 8-3 the last 4 years. Those stats scream hiring JJ would be welcomed if he can turn them back into 8-3.

I'm sure the coaches on staff would welcome the idea of being able to compete again.  Parents will be upset if their kid is not playing, not that he is not there to babysit during school hours.

Mediocre district? They play Maryville and Farragut.

There are numerous head coaches in Knox county of smaller sports (soccer, cross country, tennis, wrestling etc.) that do not work in the school.  Although thats normally not the case for sports like football, there is not a rule in place that only applies to football in terms of hiring a head coach.

Who asked you? Tennis and Soccer are other forums.
