According to the FiveStarPreps article they are allowing Shinlever to stay. What I'm wondering is how they are going to hire a coach with no teaching position available?

You may feel that way but it's unlikely that happens. Whoever is hired will interview the current assistants and will keep all the ones he feels can help him at the varsity level. There may be some pieces moved around but it will be the same voices running the program. The new head coach's job will be to bring some new ideas and approaches and to sell the current assistants that vision. That is exactly what Lamar did. Most of the assistants at West had been there and had success at that school but he came in with his own flavor. Hardin Valley and the assistants that are there had a good amount of consistency with Wes Jones. It just so happened they didn't have enough lineman and athletes during Potter's tenure.

I think the assistants should work with the new coach to help support him. What is a school to do if a bunch of the current assistants hold teaching positions and coach elsewhere or not at all?

I think HVA's principal is one of those principals. He had been at Fulton for years when they were rocking and rolling.

They've had turnover in all of them except basketball and soccer. Someone tell the bowling coach, they may not be safe!

According to the KCS website they have posted jobs for head baseball, head football, head track, head cheer twice, and softball three times....... just this year. Thank goodness West has one of the best admins around, I'd hate that much turnover. Coach McNish does a great job at West with the baseball program. First class all the way.

Baseball and football came open in the same year, if basketball followed suit, all of the major sports would have changed over in the past 12 months.

That's true, the baseball guy resigned a while back and now Shinlever. Basketball is seemingly stable. (Catholic job just came open.)

Agreed. It cuts a lot of different ways to because on one hand these HVA/Bearden jobs are large faculties and the average person may assume that would provide a lot of room to wiggle but jobs in big schools like that can be political regardless of having to hire someone new in. Are there any assistants on staff at HVA that could take over?That may be a direction they are weary of all things considered.

Which schools do you think help their athletic programs the most? I know West sees all of their athletes every day in the weightroom which is a big advantage other schools don't have. When it comes to feeder leagues I think AE, West, Bearden, Fulton, and Central have the best. Which admin needs to shift? HVA?

Agreed or maybe Catholic? Doubt that gentleman would come up for one year and jet right?

What do you think about the Bearden job? Do they hire Scott Cummings or is someone on staff worth giving a shot to?

Agreed, there is a lot more support in the Halls community as well. Cummings has a lot of support from his administration. Of course maybe I just like beating him each year@thefox. Bearden brought an absolute skeleton crew over to West this year, had about nine coaches total for a 6A school. They had as many coaches total as West does teaching in the building. Check their TSSAA directory, it's a ghost town. Bearden's AD mentioned in the article I read that teaching jobs at the school will be a factor on who they can hire. Can't imagine the new money out West will like that. You'd have to imagine in the Bearden community there is some concern about how serious the school administration is about football.

Same thoughts here that I have for Bearden but at a different angle, not going to be very likely to get a head coach with a lot of success because those tend to stay at those schools where they are having success. Especially for a school as young as Hardin Valley is, why not hire a young coach with new ideas so the program and the coach can grow and establish traditions together?

Never known Bearden to be serious about football, has always been more of a basketball school in my opinion. Being a long time West fan I liked Coach Cummings a lot but 6A is a different beast. It still bothers me that he left West after the 2014 season. Things didn't go great at Cleveland to say the least. The brain trust out on Kingston Pike will definitely want a "splashy" hire but is bad 6A head coaching experience better than no head coaching experience? Derek Hunt had never been an HC before, has done and will continue to do a great job. When Brian Nix inevitably takes over at Alcoa he will do a great job. Hard to understand what the folks running the show over there expect if they hire a Cummings or bring back a Brad Taylor. No one cares what an old West fan like me thinks but if what Shinlever has said is true and the program needs some fresh air why not go young?

This is pretty interesting. He had given West a lot of good games over the years. Who will be the front runners for Bearden and Hardin Valley?

Didn’t mean any disrespect. I just knew from when we had played early in the year he was a freshman signal calling for a 6A school. A lot to ask of a 14 year old. Heard from some of my wife’s Farragut friends that he played really well.

All i've seen was them play us at home. How'd they get those other wins with such foundational depth issues?

HVA, Farragut, and Bearden all hover around 76-80% white. My grandgirls go to Farragut, I sent both of my sons to to West because of the diversity and it has grown more diverse since.

If by less diverse you mean 2% less white. The point you're missing about Farragut winning a state title is them dropping to 5A. I was really hoping my Rebels could go back.
