If you are referring to the Hatchie River, they are across the river from Covington, but they are on the same side of the river as Brownsville.  Geography aside, everything you just said is all the reason why they should be playing Haywood.

Yea i grew up in Covington as well as played for Covington. So to us it was "across the river". LOL  My wife is from Brownsville and my kids go to school here too! So I whole heartedly pull for the Tomcats! (Unless they are playing the chargers then its a win win for me!!) And yes, I believe the rival should be played every year!

Now that y'all have reopened this can of worms, y'all might as well add that purple and white Tiger team located 19 miles down the road.  Everybody get your popcorn ready.  The Trojan and Tiger fans will be coming!  I'm going to try to stay out of it this time.  That's why I didn't mention that purple and white Tiger team by name.  Lol

I actually have more respect for the "tiger team across the river" than i do for the "mighty trojans" (as far as fans are concerned). The tiger team, in my un professional opinion, is just one good coach away from being really really good! They compare to Haywood in that they always have athletes!!

I wish Dyersburg wasn’t scared of competition. No excuse for them not to keep Haywood on their schedule.Bart Stowe would rather play an easy schedule and have a good regular season record then go out early in the playoffs than play stiff competition and make a real playoff run.

Dyersburg fans are happy with a 10-1 season!

Best of luck to all of the region 7-4A teams tomorrow, and Friday. I have always taken pride in having a very stout region to play in, and I do not think this year is going to be any different. IT IS ALMOST TIME FOR SOME REAL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL!!!

YES! I wish the best to everyone!!! I hope the Tomcats can bring back a Gold Ball this year but if not the Tomcats then at least someone from this region!!

I think Covington has a lot of key pieces to make a deep run this year. I watched the South Side scrimmage and the first team defense is very very stout. Over the entirety of the their reps, SS was held to negative yardage. The offensive starters for Covington could get big chunks and put together drives but seemed to have trouble getting into the endzone (pretty sure that will be fixed). AC Mason picked the ball and turned on that next level speed that he possesses when needed, he will be fun to watch! I think that Covington's QB situation is better this year and the line has good size. They team is physically very strong and puts in a lot of work in the weight room.

I fell that this team can make the SHIP if they can stay healthy. I have done a little research on Alcoa, and apparently they have, again, a very strong team ranked 3rd in the state (all classifications). I'd predict an Alcoa/Covington title game. Ready for the season to start.

Is the Covington Jamboree only Covington vs UC? Are there any other teams playing?

This is great news to hear!! The Chargers have always had a great strength and conditioning program! They will be a tough team to beat!! There are probably not many (if any) teams that are hungrier for a gold ball than the Chargers!

My understanding is the jamboree includes just Union City and Covington but the JV will have quarter and the freshmen will have a quarter, and maybe even the middle school. But i am not certain on the middle schools.

Impressive!  I'm glad the Tomcats were able to get at least one preseason scrimmage in.  I'm  also glad to hear we have some kickers.

I agree!! Playing like that against a 6A Bartlett team is impressive! They are generally competitive even in 6A! I am assuming the Tomcats will not be able to get another scrimmage in before the Jamboree?

That would be awesome. Bartlett is loaded and has a good coaching staff. I'll try and confirm that

I could provide a list of everyone who declined to play Haywood in a scrimmage, but it is easy to say who would play. Oakland would play, but are already scheduled. Lausanne is in with Briarcrest this week, but Briarcrest would not play the Tomcats. Covington and Henry County would play, but for obvious reasons that won't happen. The most common reason heard is the physicality Haywood plays with and fear of injury. It seems that the Tomcats are being blacklisted from a scrimmage. So looks like if nothing changes they will have have to scrimmage themselves a few times to get ready for Henry County. I have lost a lot of respect for West Tennessee s (especially the big boys in Memphis) the past few years. And there are teams who would be natural to scrimmage with like Ripley and Dyersburg but that won't happen. It's really disgusting.

I just heard that Haywood is scrimmaging Bartlett!!

    Go Tomcats!

Southwind backed out of their scrimmage with Haywood because of a wet field... those Memphis teams. The Tomcats reached out to 14 other teams int he area and were told no. I understand why!

I'm curious who the 14 teams are?

  10. Hey All!

I love reading the history of high school football, specifically West Tenn.  My dad told me about the1971 Chargers! Tough team! I bet the travel was majorly different back then? That's as about as far apart as teams in Tennessee can get!

It seems that the Tennessee High (then Bristol?) went on and played nationally or played for a national championship?? Any truth to this?

Well the Season is almost here, time is flying with all schools now on Dead period. I haven’t had a chance to see the team since last November. Tomcat fans how are we looking!? Heard we put on a good show in the 7 on 7 with Trenton, Ripley and Henry County

How did the Tomcats do, as far as scores and such? Who did they beat/lose to?

Went 3-0 against Trenton Haywood & Ripley. Scored 22x in 3 games. From all accounts, the passing game was clicking on all cylinders. Scored every drive but one I believe. Defense played really well too. These boys have worked hard on the pass game this winter and it shows

What was the score against Haywood? How did the Tomcats look?

The rumor is that something similar to the following plan is being considered to help with travel and expenses:

    * Everyone is back together and there is no D1 & D2

Class A:  Small rural public schools; no private schools, magnet schools or charter schools

Class AA:  Publics schools, small private schools that do not offer financial aid or work study, charter schools and magnet schools

Class AAA:  Public schools, small private schools that offer financial aid, large public schools, charter schools and magnet schools

Class AAAA:  Large public schools and large private schools that offer financial aid

    * Cross Country, track & field, wrestling, tennis, golf, (ALL INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP SPORTS) would only crown one champion

This plan or something very similar has been discussed numerous times but with the cost of travel for not only the schools but also officials being so great I have once again heard that it is being seriously considered.  Let’s be honest and say that 9 state championship football games in a state with only 6.772 million people is ludicrous.  For reference purposes the population for both Atlanta, GA and Houston,TX is over 6 million people.

Again i am ignorant on this subject but as it stands now, are private schools able to legally recruit? If i understand correctly, and likely i do not, the private schools that are able to legally recruit play in a "private " playoff bracket? If a private school chooses to play with the public schools in the playoffs are they not allowed to legally recruit?

My next question, will the private schools be able to legally recruit if TSSAA moves to the above mentioned plan?

I do not have a major preference one way or the other, just honestly want to understand the system/plan.

Milan and Covington were in the region together. In fact it was a 9 team region. We didn’t play all teams within the region. One year under the z plan Covington played in the 4A title game and Milan in the 3A and they were in the same region. Crazy.

That is crazy! I did not realize that! How did that even work?? LOL!!

Football is just around the corner!

Very eager to see how this year's team will bounce back from last year! Huge voids to fill with the departure of Cade Woods, Aiden Hutcherson, and Blake Reeves.  lots of bodies to replace on the line as well. However we do have several returns. We will be young for sure. Tayshawn Rivers who is a 2 year starter is out for the season with a Torn ACL, MCL, PCL, and meniscus. Gray Eubanks, will be a closely watched by all teams this year!
