Question for the Haywood faithful; having come right by Haywood’s stadium on my way to Munford last night, why can’t/couldn’t the Haywood county officials put some of that Covid money most counties got toward a nicer facility for the Tomcats? Having driven over to Tipton County and seeing the nice turf fields at Brighton and then Munford, the Haywood teams deserve something like that too. The caliber of teams you guys continually put out deserve it too. I don’t mean to knock any Haywood County officials, it was just a thought that popped in my head on the way home last night.

Wouldn’t we all like to know that! I’m not exactly sure what the hold up is. From what I hear the school board and county commission are having a pissing match over it. We need new facilities bad!

Another rematch of Region 7-3A teams. Covington has home-field advantage this year after playing both games at their place in 2021. The winner in round 3 will host the winner of the third round game between East Nashville and Smith County.

Covington won the regular season game handily. I expect my Chargers to be favored in the rematch. However, D’burg has recorded a couple of impressive playoff wins in the first two games. Have they improved enough to challenge the Chargers?

Absolutely not! I see Covington having their way with Dyersburg

Where LC is, y’all could conceivably play borderline/ near their states edge teams in Ark, MO, KY, even ILL and I don’t think it’d be as far as some of your regional games. Our HS in Memphis used to go to a country school in MO every year & get shellacked, I guess it was one of those paid-to-play situations.

Not sure what school you root for, but Haywood will definitely be looking for games!

Y’all definitely bring it! No doubt! Really a fun team to watch play. I know y’all fans of Haywood are proud of this team.

Yes sir we are! Players and coaches! Not sure how long our current staff hangs around. I hope for a very long time. I say as long as we have coach smith and coach Rebstock Haywood will remain tough to beat! Also coach pucket! I have respect for him as well!

  5. What I don’t think is fair is some regions have enough teams to basically fill their entire schedule and some teams have to find 6 non region opponents. I believe we have to many classes. Would make things a lot easier on everyone to go to 5 classes vs 6. I also think to many teams make the playoffs. I think it should be the top 2 teams from each region. Money hungry tssaa ain’t hearing that though.

I figured Haywood would play Covington ,Munford and even Dyersburg every year. Would be good gates and most years competitive games. You said you would like to avoid "any Memphis city schools!"  Then named Germantown and Whitehaven which are both City of Memphis ran schools. JS But I get your point. ;)

I wish we could get Covington dyersburg and Munford to schedule us every year! So far that has not happened. I see where my post seems contradicting. After playing 3 inner city Memphis schools, I would rather avoid them. Neither is nor them got much out of the games. Melrose tried to fight us after the game last year at our place and this year at theirs. Orange mound is not a safe place to travel to. I guess technically Whitehaven is an inner city school, but they have a good program. I considered the other schools county schools.

That is what I have been hearing as well, from kids who do not really care about football, to the system not backing the coaches they do get. Administration support is apparently not there from the school level either.

I think this is a big part of the fall off in west Tn football. Jackson schools used to have competitive teams. Not exactly sure what happened but I hope they get it fixed.

You are 100% correct. Money or lack thereof impacts everything.
My list in order of importance:

    1. Money

    2. Population (see 1)

    3. Talent (see 1 & 2)

    4. Coaching (see 1)

    5. Facilities (see 1)

To dig a little deeper into the why this is an issue between west tn and the rest of state. The state mostly handles all manufacturing startups looking to locate in the state. Where do the majority of those jobs go? Middle and east tn.  Why? Couple of different reasons but the obvious ones are more people equal a better chance at hiring more qualified workers. That is the explanation given anyway.  The dirty, not so secret reason, is that is where most political donations come from, because once again that is the area of the state with the most money.

It always circles back to money. West tn gets the scraps while middle and east get the gravy when it comes to jobs and wages in an overall sense. Hopefully the Blue Oval complex in Haywood will change things some for rural west tn. If it does what I think it will as described above Haywood may win multiple championships in a row cause they have the talent. With money available to hire better coaches and more staff, plus facility improvements and off season training geared toward skills enhancement……..look out.

This is spot on! Hoping blue oval helps Haywood and not hurt them. What scares me is another school opening in Haywood closer to blue oval.

  9. I would love to see Hookfin back in west Tn. Just not sure if I would like to see him coaching anyone that’s  not Haywood. That’s the tomcat coming out in me.  Haywood didn’t have any luck facing him while he was at Liberty. IMO he was one of the better coaches west Tn has seen or had in recent history. Not exactly sure what went wrong for him in Arkansas.

  10. Hoping Haywood can find some better non region games for next year. Henry County, Covington, South Gibson, Lexington are always good games. I hope we can avoid any Memphis city schools! But would like to see some of the Whitehavens, Germantown, Collierville, Houston, Bartlett or even the better private schools. There’s also some good teams in north Mississippi. The team from Paducah that goes to Henry county’s jamboree seems like a good program. Paducah isn’t to bad of a drive.

You can’t make kids want to play ball. Outside of Haywood and Henry Co. who is dressing more than 70 kids? It come down to coaches not being innovative. Haywood shook that 8 years ago. Some coaches are just stuck in their ways

This is absolutely spot on! Couldn’t have said it any better myself!

Covington wasn't going to play even before the reclassification from what I was told

I don’t understand why. Covington is a good program, I don’t understand why they would shy away. The games between us always had a good crowd and good atmosphere.

  13. Lexington plays a very boring style of offense but very effective. They will almost put you to sleep then all of a sudden they will break a long run. When they played Haywood they were literally not snapping the ball til there was less than 5 seconds left on the clock. Like I said, boring to watch but effective. They also don’t make many mistakes.

I agree!! I know this is a crazy idea (y'all don't laugh at me) but i think it would be nice for the Championship location move from east to west just like the "Home team" rotates each year. So for example, this year the west side of the bracket is the home team therefore the final game could be at AP, or UTM, or even the Liberty Bowl. There are other locations that are options but the general idea is my point.

I think this is a good idea as well! But we all know the tssaa is gonna take care of their East Tn darlings as much as possible.
