I heard it was a Loudon County school.

I don't think LC will be hurting. They are about to build an indoor facility that will put Clinton's to shame

Yeah it will take the county kids in that area that were going to lenior city. They will move down to 4a I think

Little bit of history off the cuff. Please remember the numbers I use are approximate from what I remember at the time.

Charleston High School was one of those Kindergarten through High school situations. Pretty much all the enrollment come from Charleston itself with a few from the outskirts. The school typically carried around 300 to 500 students.

Bradley was then one of the largest high schools in the state, with enrolment generally around 2,000 plus. in 1977 it was like 2100 students and before they moved the 9th grade to the middle schools it hit 2400. (My freshmen class started with 600+ students).

Cleveland High at the time had around 1000 to 1200 students as best I can remember.

So, when they built Walker Valley, they did away with Charleston High School, in favor of a new name and all that entails. I thought it was a bit of slap in the face of the Charleston legacy which while not great did have some good history. And Walker Valley still tries to embrace the names of the players but avoids the "Charleston name tag" history. (I thought why not keep the name of the Panthers but what do I know).

But the upshot was that the county had and has open enrollment. You can go to either HS in the county, but the feeder of Walker Valley is supposedly Ocoee Middle and the feeder to Bradley is now Lake Forest (formerly Trewhitt) Middle School.

So essentially, they took in Charleston High School (there is still Charleston Elementary on the original campus and the football field and stands still exist) and split the student population of Bradley when creating Walker Valley.

Because of the growth Cleveland High is now the largest school in the county, since they split Bradley with Walker Valley. Bradley is now a small 6A school and Walker Valley a large 5A school with Cleveland 6A.

Quite a few kids come from mcminn county like Riceville and Calhoun to go to walker valley as well. Some kids in Southern Meigs county as well

Our region needs some beefing up.  I hope they can continue to get better.

I agree they seem to improve as year went on really it's almost always sp getting 1st seed, Whitwell  more often than not at 2 seed, than the rest fight for 3&4 seed although sale creek has improved since its inception, I really thought sale creek was gonna beat Clay County honestly, but they didn't, they have improved alot over the decade they've existed!  Chattanooga prep seems like they can be good, copperhill used to be a pretty  tough program back In then day, but lately they've been weak and seem to struggle to find games based of their location, and lookout valley has always seemed to be in a shambles in all sports honestly.

If you add cland,Hampton, and unaka it equals 914 which would make a solid 4A team. Probably wouldn't beat Greenville and Elizabethton every year but would make two of the three schools more competitive. Hampton is the only one who has been constantly good every season.

Wonder what it would be called I think Carter county,or Carter county central would sound good.  Probably build it on city county line of betsy. Big question is what mascot would they go with, or would they take a new name, I think black bears or bucks would sound good considering it'd be a mostly rural mountainous school.

Sounds like a terrible time. :roflol:

May show up to the Meigs County vs dunlap  game, Giles county way to far for me to travel, where mcminn Co dropped out earlier I won't have anything else to do. May be a tiger for next Friday but will still be listening to for my boys In blue, don't see central beating Giles though, but then again I didn't see them beating Kingston, but thought they'd kill tellico and beat Chattanooga Central just depends on who shows up.

Henry County High School was formed in 1969 as a consolidation of Grove (Paris), Central (Paris), Puryear, Cottage Grove, Buchanan, Henry, and Springville High Schools.

The latter 5 were very small rural schools that had basketball but did not have football.

Oh okay makes sense was central the black school for yalls area. Ours (mcminn county) was formed  in 1903 but they added schools niota high school joined In the 40s which it was a  rural basketball high school, cook joined in 1967 I believe which was athens black high school, then Calhoun high school which a small rural school joined in 1980. Mcminn central was formed through the combination of Englewood ,Etowah, and East Etowah African American school in 1966. I love learned about the history of stuff like that. Would be cool to see what it would be like to have all the old schools back in today's time(minus the segregated schools)

This is one of five games that I can't figure out on this weekends favorites. Heritage beat the tar out of Lenoir City sticks out in my mind. This is harder than trying to pick the winner of The Wampler Sausage Bowl between William Blount and Lenoir City when they played a few years back. No consistency on either team to go off of.

I think rhea county wins in a close game even though it's away up there Lenoir city

@olddevil might appreciate this trivia, but there's actually some pretty cool history between Memphis Central and Henry County.

HCHS's predecessor, Grove High, went undefeated in 1949 and had a pretty legendary season with very few close games. They completed their perfect season in a bowl game against Memphis Central, winning 21-20. I believe this was the only state championship the Grove Blue Devils ever claimed back during the era of polls.

Who did Grove consolidate with to make Henry County and what year did that happen?
