  1. What if it IS funny to shank a ball?

Alot of us have learned so much from Bond at Ga. Tech, their culture is unique, refreshing and effective. I remember one moment very vividly where one of his players shanked a pass at a somewhat crucial time ..she smiled into a chuckle as she looked at the coach and he was already smiling and chuckling. You can read into that what you want... but, I think there is alot of wisdom to be found in that outlook. Once the shank is being shagged it seems to me that the best actions are actions that allow the player to be comfortable and confident to do her best next point ...I don't see how making them feel guilty or mornful or punished or down or adopting a fake over-seriousness helps them play their best on the next play. In games we certainly shouldn't even tell them what they did wrong, they know they messed up and they know what they did and talking about the lousy past only increases the odds they won't be ready and confident to do their best on the next play that starts in 6-9 seconds. Let's let em smile if it helps in games and teach them how to care or focus in practice.

i'm gona have to agree with CP here...yes, us players don't need negative feedback by the coach dwelling on the last point (or teammates likewise) we need a positive coach that will help us back up and tell us just to make this next point happen! that is what i truly loved about you...shank it well....get the next one! it's just that simple and some people don't perceive it to be but it really is as simple as letting go of the last point that you screwed up on and focusing on the point about to happen.

  2. CU, I have to empathize with you. I think most of us agree, it's about the girls, not the parents. If it was my daughter the other father yelled at, I'm not sure what I would have done but I'm betting it wouldn't have been very friendly. If I was the coach of the team, I think I would have to make a pretty strong statement, like call timeout and go over and talk to him directly (in front of everyone)! That had to be embarassing for the player.

i'm glad to hear that you'd stand up for your daughter haha i think she'd appreciate that very very much! also i agree that if i was the coach and heard that then i'd also make a pretty strong statement!

  3. No disrespect intended, maybe they will win it all. Volleyball teams are very hard to predict, there is so many momentum swings. I guess the team that doesn't blink at state will probably win it. Brentwood, Cookeville, Lavergne, Franklin, Siegal and probably another team not mentioned may get on a hot streak just at the right time. Anyway, should be very exciting and the best of luck to all the teams. I have seen all these teams play very well this season at various tournaments. If I had to put my life in a teams hands, it would be Brentwood, but I sure would be nervous at state. Ps, I couldn't agree more with Compassion about team play, so important. :thumb:

let me tell you...don't get started with momentum if compassion is back! haha good to have you back hope you'll stay on even when you move!

  4. A BIG AMEN...Brotha/Sista.

Also Kudo's to Ooltewah for showing class by calling off their big dogs against a less talented opponent. They could have used the match to make a statement but chose to play for the benefit of both teams.

Hillmen, thanks for the compliment on class. We also wanted some of the younger girls to step up and get a feel for what next year will be like for them. The younger ones did a great job!

  5. Now that we are at the half way point, what are everyones thoughts?

i will explain my opinion...partridge is a force and her team still has multiple good players but w/o partridge i'm not 100% sure if they would be able to compete with ER! i don't believe she is the best in the state but she has potential...if ND wins State then she is an excellent canidate for Player of the Year! it will be either her or Strozak if they win.

  6. Good post but this is definitely too soon to put anything in concrete. You may be exactly right but after seeing ER and and realizing they will have to modify and expand their game a little and knowing who is coaching, that team will be a factor in A/AA. AAA will be very close situation and anything can happen. Ooltewah must be tough to beat an excellent Cookeville team even this early but it is early and the District hasn't started yet. My thoughts are injuries will play a major role in this years results. Conditioning will be a determining factor. From here on it will be a grueling season. Teams are now just about 75% of their potential as preseason starts even with as many players playing club. Playing a hard District schedule, with as many as are playing off season, will be determined by stamina and conditioning along with a great deal of luck with injuries and only time will tell with these great teams. There doesn't seem to be many teams that are pushovers and it will be the little things which will matter but isn't that always the case.

No im definitely not setting anything in concrete, TRUST ME, i learned not to do that last year that is for sure. I learned that anythinig can happen in the blink of an eye or just a simple first post season match. Overconfidence can bite some people in the rears I will just say that.

I believe 100% on the part about injuries playing a major role this year! Some teams are depending desperately upon some of the players and without them some teams won't survive in the postseason.

I was sad to hear that Siegel was not going to be able to make it to the ER and OHS matches the other day. All matches would have been very very interesting to watch.

  7. Spinchik,

You know a lot about the setting world, could you be OH or MB???? I'm sure Brock was setting for ER(either older or younger or mother). I hear GH has hands but can she get them high enough to stop the kill. I watched at the CHOO and RB BC can go. A mother of the other Red Team said they had 4 setters, a tall girl that will down size some of the teams in DII this year. The DII blue team has yet to prove anything. If you have Campbell and Gearin and can't put the ball down hard when it is set-up then it is just a free ball for the other team. They lost a ton in their OH's and DS. Soddy has gained a new coach working the girls hard. It maybe a few years before the skills show up, just note it as work in progress. I think these girls from (SD) the country, just know how to dig and pass a Vball with out having to go to their knee's first.

    chattdad

yes some teams are just THAT good whereas they don't have to use their knees to pass but SD couldnt really do that w/o the kneepads as i saw when i watched them a few times (not trying to putdown SD or anything)

the Red Team in D2 does for sure have some talented girls with the setters and hitters all meshing very well together. the blue team in D2 has an excellent coach and some good setters but i do have to agree that the hitting will be lacking. other than Laughlin that is the only hitter that i will expect much of until they prove more.

  8. I don't know how they did overall, know they played well but in what little I saw I would not say "dominant". That doesn't mean that they won't be once things really get going but as I said before, not sure how much you can truly tell from this event.

Yes VBD I shall agree with the BWood statement...they were not "dominant" but then again they for sure weren't terrible. They ARE beatable this year, looks like the outside hitter (don't know her name) is ALMOST the only player that has to be stopped on the team. Bwood has recovered after losing their amazing setter...looks like they have replaced her pretty quickly. This setter hasn't filled the shoes yet but is trying to fit in them, or so it seems.

  9. Well Ooltewah also has some great juniors that are also hungry for state birth. And i am not completely bias i am just a big fan of the vollyball team but i play soccer. But don't get me wrong i know every player. And i would really like to know if i am going to be seeing you at some of the games this year.

Whatever LO32 you are to bias haha...I was hoping that I would be able to meet you at one of the games this year but I'm pretty sure that MTSU could use a little KJ. If you miss Senior Night (I've heard through the grapevine) that you may have 2 very upset seniors on your hands! Oh and the juniors on Ooltewah have high hopes just as much as the seniors do or so I've again heard through the grapevine. :thumb:

You will for sure see me and maybe talk to me. You will most likily beat our team,

Maybe even in Soccer. Our Goalie is the bomb. You are very right, you have some strong Juniors that show some Compassion skills and inter strength. I hope chemistry works for these girls. We all have had talent on teams, but no chemistry to make them gel together. If they have all this, watch out, it could be the Ooltville battle instead of the battle of Brockridge. LOL I think Grace maybe a little supprise for ND and ER. It will be a big year.

I still haven't figured if you're a red or blue fan?! Sounds like your kid MIGHT be at a public school though...I may be misled though

  10. In Chattanooga:

SD has 2 setters with some good hands.

    Grace has Ball and Lowery

Grace does have those two who will most likely be feeding the ball to MB, Lyons.

PS:  I can't take a team seriously when they don't wear kneepads! Maybe eventually they will INVEST into something that will protect their knees. Hey they might even have some new technology that they don't want other teams to find out about until the season?! :thumb:

  11. At RB there's Bailee Chastain who has always been an awesome setter, hitter, blocker, and passer. She'll definitely be a key player on her team. Gretchen Higdon, Ooltewah, is making some players take a double-take. She's a junior this year so just imagine how she'll look next year. Laura Brock...is she setting AT ALL this year? Of course she's hitting (DUHHH!!!) but I couldn't remember from the Choo Choo team camp if I had seen her setting at all? I know they had a newer girl setting but didn't know if Brock was setting any?! I believe her younger sister may turn out to be a little setter herself. Morgan Strozak I do believe WAS NOT setting but you never know what might happen during the season, could possibly be a change-up. GPS's Campbell and Gearrin have nice strong hands for setting and overhead digging, might wanna watch out for those two. Baylor has 3 setters that I know of: Sledge, Hildebran, and Anderson (younger sis of Carson A. who graduated this year). Sledge has developed from a hitter to a setter/hitter. Anderson I've heard is doing well but I haven't seen her this year. Hildebran has set many years so I'm sure she'll turn up with some assists. Cleveland's Fehrer will give the sets to her team (I'm not sure how her team is but she can set the ball).

  12. I think Cookeville is a team to contend with. They whipped us and looks like they will be ready when the gates open this year. It looks like Oolt and Cookville will end up at the BORO for Halloween. BOO

Yea Ooltewah and Cookeville will be a VERY interesting match to watch...they played at the Choo Choo team camp and both teams looked strong. Ooltewah ended up with a victory in the end but Cookeville played a tough match. Both of these teams will be ones to watch out for during the season (or so it seems during pre-season).

Ooltewah will be playing ER and Siegel tomorrow which I'm sure will all 3 be great matches to view. Of course, ER has Brock but to many's surprise she IS stoppable in most situations. Put up a big block and she'll have to either hit over it or around it. I haven't seen Siegel this year but hear they still have an excellent crew returning. Ooltewah has many key players. ALL teams are in a run for the GOLD this year!

  13. well back to the topic of "where's compassion?" i definitely would love his insight personally...i get a kick out of his sarcasm but i can TOTALLY understand why he is outta the posting for a little while atleast...but he shall be missed

  14. Baylor will have multiple seniors this year and all of whom I believe will be very impressive

Brittany Scoggins- MB, played for D2W(choo choo or w/e you know it as) dominated at the net and I'm sure is planning on doing it during high school season

Meaghan Sledge- OH/S/DS, played also for D2W while helping her team earn some smart kills

Jessi Hildebrand- OH/S, played for Dig and helped out the setting department...I'm sure she'll be setting again this year

  15. I'm going to have to add a few more teams to place in people's minds:

    1. Baylor-almost same team, excellent group of girls and Scoggins who will dominate at the net

    2. Red Bank-6 seniors this year including Bailee Chastain who will lead the team probably in kills and aces

    3. Ooltewah-2 seniors & 5 juniors, 6 of those played club ball and have really improved

Keys to becoming an excellent team this year:

    1. Outstanding Leadership- if there isn't any leadership on the court then how will anyone know who to look upon for answers?!

    2. Talkage(maybe not a word)- communication on the court is very vital

    3. Skills- many teams this year are going to have to rely on skilled persons to dominate on the court

    4. Staying in Shape- I have a feeling this season is going to be FULL of long rallies and it's going to reflect on how well/poor the team is doing to stay in shape

    5. Mental Strength- If a team isn't confident (not overly confident) then how can they expect to make it anywhere in their season?! Mental toughness is going to be KEY!

  16. So..............here's my last somewhat meaningless post on what I was able to see / was told about the last day. Ooltewah split with D. Bennett (1-1), beat Blackman (3-0), lost to Sullivan S. 25-11, 11-25 and 21-25 and beat S. Daisy in 2. I also know that Red Bank beat Cookeville and lost to Pelham, AL.

Looking forward to the "real" season getting started soon.........

    Me too Daddy...me too

  17. I believe ND was at MTSU team camp this week and did pretty well. They have everyone returning from a team that went to state last year. The 2 girls that played at Nationals, Morgan Strozak and Leigh Stavrum. Can't say much about the other teams, since I don't believe they have done much yet but can tell you GPS will still be strong with Jen Laughlin leading the hitting and Camille Campbell setting. Baylor will be lead by Brtitany Scoggins (the big girl) who can do every thing and will get support from Meaghan Sledge, Jessi Hildebrand and Lindsey Bibbey. Don't know as much about Boyd except they will have several young players that played club this past season and should be much improved.

Yes, Baylor will be a tough team to beat this year with their height and power...also i have a correction on the name Daddy...its Lindsay Bibee but yes Linz will be one of the junior standouts if I am able to make that "prediction"...she is a strong and powerful outside who can get off of the floor quite easily...plus her blocking will help Baylor too

  18. At the Choo Choo, Ooltewah used the help of all 5 of their juniors. One was absent the last 2 days due to illness but the others were there all week for every game. Gretchen Higdon, setter, is running the show this year...with all of her setting I'm surprised the other team isn't wanting to get set by her! Taylor Gatewood, MB/OH, is doing phenominal at the net putting the ball back on the other side of the court. Sarah Smith, L/DS, is digging up those balls all day long. Courtney Cotter, OH/RH, doing an awesome job of tooling off the block (personally of the best I think in the area). Amanda Kelley, RH/OH/DS, doing it ALL at once! I also want to add another key player that is an underclassmen, Libby Peigen...Yes, the coach's daughter. She's a freshman and maybe smaller than the rest of the girls but can dig em up and put em back down! :P

  19. I have been wondering about the owls. Will Red Bank be as good as they were last year? OHS is always good..even when they are down a little bit. Great Coach! Whoever loses the Murf region has to travel to Chatt to usually play OHS. While Bradley County or Red Bank comes up to play-- most recently either Siegel or Blackman. Red Bank took care of it last year, it was good to see them back in the state..can they do it again?

The last 4 7 AAA champions have been either Siegel or Blackman. With 7 AAA being strong again it will make for another great Sub State. I think almost every team in 7AAA will be improved.

yes i can tell you cliff that ooltewah is goin for the gold this year...they're determined to claim what was once theirs and cant wait to start the season! yea OHS is going to start off strong and keep going! be on the lookout cliff!

"Love that is not madness, is not love"

  20. I've noticed that not much has been said about Ooltewah this year. The new and improved Ooltewah is going to have 2 seniors and 5 juniors...out of all 7 of those players 6 played club ball for Dig to Win...there were also a couple of sophmores that played for Dig to Win. I've heard that Ooltewah is going to have a strong team ESPECIALLY because of the juniors!

  21. Grace Academy in Chattanooga has six seniors on their varsity team this season. They had a good team camp at UT and are looking forward to a good season. I think they will do well this season.

Yea I know a few of the seniors on Grace's team...Sarah Lyons will be an awesome blocker for that team! She played on my club team and has an abundance of GREAT skills with hitting and blocking.

  22. Personally, as a high school senior of the only 2 on my team, I have found that club ball is IMPORTANT... the other senior on the team does NOT play club ball but is an AWESOME player with 3 (well now only 2) sports that she plays but I have talked with her about what college and all that good stuff and have found that even though she is good at volleyball, she has not talked to ANY colleges about volleyball due to the lack of exposure high school ball can give you. It's too hard for college coaches to focus on coaching their own college team and recruiting during the same season and I believe that's what club ball does is gives college coaches a chance to recruit during the off-season.

For me I don't know what I would have done without my club coach! I would have been taught the exact same way by the exact same person if it weren't for club ball. My 16's coach, Joe, was one of the BEST coaches in my league, (many may not agree but it's a personal statement) if it wasn't for him, his GREAT coaching, and his enthusiasm to GET me a scholarship I probably wouldn't have one right now! My high school coach also coaches the middle school and she has a family so she is TOO busy with other priorities and doesn't have time to focus on her player's availability for college coaches to watch. Joe, my 16s club coach, told me what I needed to do and how to word all the right words and EVERYTHING that I needed to be recruited.

I have also heard of high school coaches that are open and willing to help you so I can understand that some may take offense about club being the ONLY way to be recruited but personally if I were a college coach (I am kind of aspiring to be one day) I would most likely recruit the girls that had club ball experience. But that's just my opinion on this whole topic.

PS: That quote was about the sport of volleyball...or atleast for me it is!

  23. I know I could tell that the Lady Owls weren't giving it their all they just laid down...I believe that they didn't expect to lose and that's what killed them. The Lady Trojans came to play hard...they knew they had to win and they had nothing to lose while the Owls had everything to lose and they sure did lose it all. I've never seen the Trojans play any harder than that...I also heard in the district finals that they definitely didn't play their top game against Red Bank but hey atleast they will get to go to the region unlike Ooltewah. Good luck to all in state and I give an applause to the Trojans for their outstanding performance against Ooltewah...I wonder how they changed so quickly?! It is almost like someone else was practicing them...not that I've heard that or anything...but if there was someone else to help them then I give them credit even though they probably shouldn't have been in that gym helping..... :thumb:
