1. QUOTE(Coniglio @ Mar 4 2007 - 09:50 PM) 826399921I'm sure I could pull it in a small meet. Not at region or anything outside of our place.

interesting you should point that out. i have found that doing a 3200-4x800-1600 is a lot more effective in big meets due to the increase in heats. in small dual and triangular meets, you kill yourself because there is not enough recovery. something that might help you. at a lot of meets i tell bo to do a short workout where he runs the anchor 4x800, then the open 400, the open 800 and the 4x400. this is great for an easy meet and helps on speed work. maybe fingerle will let you do when you run somebody easy.

  2. QUOTE(Coniglio @ Mar 3 2007 - 08:40 PM) 826398622That's what my coaches and I decided. I'll still train for a possible chance at the 1600 because I'll need the speed. I think we've even talked about doubling the 4x800 (first leg) and 1600 just to see if I can really run all out right back to back.

I also want to try 2 legs in the 4x800 sometime.

tough to do. last year at a jamboree i made clabo/owens run 1st and 2nd legs on the 4x800 after running the 3200 and they both ran the 1600. i think i almost killed them, but it can be done.

is running 2 legs in the 4x800 legal?

  3. QUOTE(Coniglio @ Mar 3 2007 - 06:55 PM) 826398495Well yes that does make me happy. I was just about to ask about him.

based on cross country season, my advice to you is to focus on the 3200. it seems the most open. clabo should win easily, but the 2 spot is clearly up for grabs. good luck.

  4. QUOTE(Coniglio @ Mar 3 2007 - 10:27 AM) 826398108So I read. Clabo, Harper, Wilson, Me... yum.

If it makes you feel any better I don't think Bo Owens is going to run the 1600 this year, he's a better 800 runner.

  5. QUOTE(mahaney @ Feb 26 2007 - 09:46 PM) 826390795lol you do make a point. /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> whether we can or not is the question. isn't he an anchor leg for his 4x4 team or something? i've heard that somewhere.

clabo views the 4x4 as his cool down. we typically haven't had the numbers to assemble a solid 4x4 team, we just reached a 4:50 last year. this year is looking more promising. i can tell you one thing, however. seymour's 4x4 team is definitely flying under the radar. i wouldn't be surprised if they made an appearance at state. ryan williamson is the real deal...he's had a great indoor season in the multi's and they almost qualified last year with everyone back. williamson is hands down my pick for decathlon title(runner-up last year with weak 110h and vault performances)

overall, i think the east is the section to watch. i'm tired of the middle and west sections dominating us at state. best of luck to all my playas in the east.

  6. I think 3200 is clabo's race, barring some freak accident.

1600 is pretty open, my money is on a hard fight from harper, johnson, clabo, and gideon wilson from catholic. (trust me, he had a fantastic cc season and an impressive showing at AAU southeastern this past weekend. he's going to make some noise.)

800: no particular favorite, but i'll go with the guy that doesn't run the 3200. let's face it, not too many people can run three miles and still have a good 800 in them.

4x800: DL. hands down. i could probably throw together a team that could compete, but who is going to sit out the 3200 and risk the 1600 for a 4x800? throwing all your eggs in one basket is just bad coaching in my opinion. i'm not going to waste david clabo and bo owens on a 4x800 when i could get way more points by spreading them out among the distance events.

  7. you are now my hero. i coach at gatlinburg-pittman in east tn and i also think it is a shame that many deserving athletes are not given the right to compete at state. while we see this a lot in the middle section, especially in the 1600 and 3200, it is not fair that athletes who run a 10:10 3200 do not advance while the two automatic qualifiers from the west section are well over 10:40.

i think that AAA has done a good job with their format. the only logical reason i can see for not applying this to A/AA is the representation issue based on population and number of AAA schools.

my vote is HECK YES! increase the qualifiers.

  8. QUOTE(mahaney @ Feb 19 2007 - 09:09 PM) 826379898;) i definatly agree with you. i want to win state but i want to be as friendly as possible afterwards to. i wouldn't ever shrug anyone off. you always have to remember where you came from. was josh jaynes friendly? i always remember clay hannah always giving me the impression that he was very modest and friendly.

does anyone know what the west (or what ever that section is called) section has to offer?

    who is coming back?

the west is usually pretty weak...i've been coaching for 4years and i don't remember anyone from the west being under 10:00, if not 10:30. actually, the west makes me want to push for qualifying standards for the state meet. it is a shame that strong runners from the east and middle have to stay home because west runners virtually have a shoe-in. if you look at the results from the past few years, the west teams are usually WAY under qualified for the state meet. but, you have to share the love.

  9. QUOTE(mahaney @ Feb 19 2007 - 07:07 PM) 826379713hey man, i don't think conig intentionally meant to get smart with you. i think he just wanted you to know the standards. thats not conig's nature. it was my fault for not being more clear.

i agree. regardless of which individuals or teams qualify and/or win at state, let's not forget about maintaining sportsmanship and integrity. let's leave the trash talking for lap 7 in the 3200.

best of luck to everyone and every team this season.

  10. QUOTE(Galilee @ Feb 15 2007 - 10:12 AM) 826372777

Mitchell, Austin-east, and Pearl-Cohn should be a great fight.

My money is on Austin-East. It wouldn't surprise me if some distance powerhouses didn't creep up on the sprint powerhouses. See also: Chattanooga Christian, Lipscomb, and CAK. But I'm a distance coach, so take it for whatever it's worth.

  11. if you go to www.tisca.net, i think you can access a list of all of the teams in the state. i was at the KISL meet this past weekend and the turnout was crazy. it actually seemed down from last year, but it took until around 2:00 to finish all of the prelims. good luck to everyone swimming at the state meet.

  12. I believe i called it...clabo runs away with it. congrats. "kp doesn't run 52 or anything" didnt exactly hold up. couldnt hang, thats two for gatlin. however i was impressed with Coniglio at 4th. good job man. i wont bother talkin trash, but im goin with thee same thing happening in the 3200. clabo refuses to be stopped.

not to mention, clabo is out for blood in the 1600. he has barely missed that trip to state in the 1600 the past two years.

when i looked at the results again today, i realized that 6 of the top 10 this weekend are east section distance runners. not to mention there are some rising stars that could be there by the time sectionals roll around. i wish february would hurry up and get here.

  13. yea i know what u mean

the middle last year had i tihnk 5 guys under 10 and then the west gets in a 10:45 and a 10:50

dont u tihnk there should be a qualifying cuttoff. maybe 10:15 for 3200 and 4:45 for 1600

that's an interesting thought. i am the faculty rep for our swim team and swimming has time cuts for state qualifying. the problem with that is that the state meet has grown ridiculously large. this year the state association had to make some pretty drastic time cuts because the aquatic center in nashville put a limit on the number of swimmers due to space issues. then you always have the issue of falsifying times, so we'd have to make sure that all meets were automatic timing, which would not be fair to a lot of smaller programs. plus, since tssaa isn't willing to use the AAA state meet format in A/AA, speculation of time cuts is probably pointless.

  14. those are bold but odd predictions

i also think that the west will dominate track. middle and east cant match their supreme sprinting and field even abilities.

when is the last time an east team won state a/aa in track.....that would be Austin-East High School in 1987. so good luck

very true about the west and sprinting/field events. i was only talking about distance because west is usually really really weak in those events. in fact, i almost wish they'd reformat the qualifying structure. it always grieves me that sub-10:00 runners are left out of the state meet and two 10:45 guys are running from west tn. it's always a 6 man race at state...and it should be the best 8 runners in the state.

  15. And as for track, I can't wait for the 800. Bring them all on gphstrack, i'll be waiting.

I won't be bringing anything on since I finished my high school running career ten years ago.

However, the runners I coach will happy to bring any distance race on. I think the East Section is going to dominate at state this year, so train hard this winter, ok?

    2007 Predictions:

    A/AA - Brosemore and Coniglio.

    AAA - Kroeger and Sonnenfeldt.

    D-II - Zimmerman and Young.

    Have a great winter.

  16. wow, what a day!

the a/aa race was a great one. my predictions i had placed in an envelope before i left were completely thrown off. except for the individual champ and team champs, of course.

everyone ran a solid race. while there were a few disappointments, who cares...how many people can say they ran at state, much less ran well at state?

    congrats to everyone...

coniglio, you ran a noble race. you knew you were playing with fire, but pre would've proud of your effort.

when i watched the awards ceremony, i couldn't help but think about how great the distance races are going to be at a/aa east sectional come track season.

clabo, coniglio, harper, smith...all you middle tennessee boys better step it up.

and gatlinzpitt4, my myspace is my whithelton.

happy winter training, foot locker, indoor, whatever it is you do.

    good job and good night.

  17. kick is not that important. i bet a runner that runs a 25 min could outkick me but hes not gonna be near me in the race so wbat does it matter. in the same way the race will be decided on the gravel road and on the back hill not the last 400.

i agree. the last 400 (with the excpetion of a few courses) is just icing on the cake. if a race is run in a smart manner, the last 400 won't make a big difference.

  18. As far as teams, lipscomb has talent, but the race must be run, if they are off by just a nanometer...this could get interesting.

I think lipscomb has a little more than a nanometer...maybe a milimeter. Based on my calculations, which are only based on a few factors, the top 3 are:

    DL - 48

    FRA - 84

    USJC - 118

If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on these to be the top three. I think where it gets interesting team-wise is 4-10. It's closer than we all realize.

Also, gatlinzpitt4, if you're on myspace, chances are you know who I am. Who are you...it's been driving me insane. Send me a myspace message. WH.

  19. 5:09!?!?!!! steeple will tear u apart if u take it out that fast. what did he come back with 6:30?

i couldn't see the two mile mark, but if it tells you anything, smith placed 3rd, 37 seconds behind clabo. he's a young kid, a sophomore i think. hopefully he learned from the mistake. if so, it should make things a little more interesting.

  20. don't be hard on yourself, conig. i'd love to see you finish 2nd. <_<

not so sure i agree with you about clabo pushing the pace. at sectionals in the 3200 (I think that's what you're referring to?), he got upset because you, jaynes, and benavides went out way too slow. plus, he knew what jaynes was capable of on the last 400...which we saw in action when he chased him down to beat him by a second.

and let's not forget how the same thing happened at the state meet. clabo lost by .25 seconds...he won't let that happen again.

also, david is not one to take the lead early. david smith from university school pushed the first mile at 5:09 on thursday, which is a little fast in my opinion on a course like daniel boone.

good luck, see you on saturday. beat all those middle tennessee boys for me.
