  1. Really. Give him extra time. What's next ? I thought he had all week to make weight.

I agree. It's unfortunate for any kid not to make weight at the Region Tournament. But, I don't think there should be a grace period in place to allow any kid the opportunity to make weight during weigh-ins.

  2. Who have been the best wrestlers pound for pound produced by the state of Tennessee in the past 10 years? Some names to start with: (no particular order)

    Kaleb Baker

    Zach Watson

    Justin Cash

    Michael Hooker

    Campbell Lewis

    Nic Bundy

    T.J. Duncan

    Jacob Stevens

I think thats a pretty good list of wrestlers.

  3. I know it’s only a few days after the state tournament but it’s never too earlier to look toward next year. Who is going to be the best teams in D1 and D2 for 2014 season and who going will win it for each weight class?

Here are my D2 predictions don’t have any D1 yet

    Top team D2 Father Ryan

106: Father Ryan’s upcoming 8th grader the all world middle schooler (can’t remember his name)

    113: James Westbrooks (McCallie,

120: Elijah Oliver (Christian Brothers, 10)

126: Hal Fisher (Father Ryan, 10),

132: Chris Wes. Father Ryan 10)

    138: Adam Connell (McCallie,11)

145: James Simpson (Father Ryan, 11),

    152: ??

    160: Bryson Popp (Baylor, 11).

    170: Ryan Parker (Baylor, 9),

    182: Nathan Hoodenpyle (McCallie, 11)

195: Ben Stacey (9), Father Ryan

    220: Brian Phillips (9), McCallie

    285: Jay Robertson (MBA, 11)

The talent level has really dropped off in the last couple seasons. Several years back the wrestlers in D2 could go head to head with the D1 wrestlers as well as kids from other states.

In my opinion, Oliver, J Simpson, Westbrooks and Connell are your tough kids out of the group!

now if young Mr. King shows up it will be interesting to see if he lands in the same weight class as Oliver. Oliver will be a 4x State Champion for sure.

  4. Surprised it hasn't happened yet, here's my picks...

106- Murphy (Baylor) dec Navario (Bradley)

    D-1 (0) D-2 (3)

113- Oliver (CBHS) pin Debian (Cleveland)

    D-1 (0) D-2 (9)

120- Stevens (Soddy) dec Elsea (McCallie)

    D-1 (3) D-2 (9)

126- Gray (CBHS) dec Stevenson (Cleveland)

    D-1 (3) D-2 (12)

132- Hamilton (Cleveland) dec Connell (McCallie)

    D-1 (6) D-2 (12)

138- Olson (BGA) dec Langford (WV)

    D-1 (6) D-2 (15)

145- Marchetti (Father Ryan) dec Freeman (Ravenwood)

    D-1 (6) D-2 (18)

152- Baker (CBHS) major dec Dickerson (CC)

    D-1 (6) D-2 (22)

160- Popp (Baylor) dec Clark (Bradley)

    D-1 (6) D-2 (25)

170- Solomon (Maryville) dec Parker (Baylor)

    D-1 (9) D-2 (25)

182- Henry (Soddy) dec Hoodenpyle (McCallie)

    D-1 (12) D-2 (25)

195- Boykin (Riverdale) dec Garstin (MBA)

    D-1 (15) D-2 (25)

220- Satterfield (WB) dec Mason (BA)

    D-1 (18) D-2 (25)

Hwt.- Reagen (Clarksville) pin Robertson (MBA)

    D-1 (24) D-2 (25)

Closer than I thought actually. D-2 picks up wins early but D-1 picks up Bonus points that make it close.

    OW- Oliver (CBHS 113)

Best Match- I say Satterfield (WB) in OT at 220.

    What do y'all think?

I think your pick at 138 is a bit off. Olson is a good wrestler but dont think he'd come out on top. Marchetti would lose to Freeman for sure in my opinion. Mason would lose to Satterfield. I'd pick Mason to win by 2.

  5. 106-Devan Cryee

    113-Chris Debian

    120-Jacob Stevens

    126-Austin Oliver

    132-Eddie Small

    138-Caleb Langford

    145-Jacob Freeman

    152-Josh Hamilton

    160-Aaron Lopez

    170-Tyler Crane

    182-Ethan West, Cleveland

    195-Boykin, Riverdale

220-Satterfield, William Blount (someone set an extra mat for Amos and Satterfield to go at it one more time before they graduate) Would love to see the match.

    285-Taylor Podany, Beech

There are definitely some guys in the lower weights that i feel can pull off some upsets. Should be some good wrestling in a few days.

  6. 106 Chalifoux (FRHS)

    113 Oliver (CBHS)

    120 Santi (CBHS)

    126 Gray (CBHS)

    132 Brunner (Baylor)

    138 Olson (BGA)

    145 Parrish (CBHS)

    152 Baker (CBHS)

    160 Hataway (CBHS)

    170 Walthall (CBHS)

    182 Clements (Baylor)

    195 McOlgan (CBHS)

    220 Mason (BA)

    285 Robertson (MBA)

The intermat top 50 in the nation Brothers from Memphis flex their muscle this weekend displaying their prowess in DII TSSAA by winning in a blowout. I have Santi in an upset over Elsea of McCallie in the finals at 120, as well as Parrish beating Marchetti (if you consider that an upset), and Hataway reversing a 2 point defeat against Popp. CBHS has a TSSAA record of 8 state champions, and legitimate possibility of having 10 finalists (add Tisdale 106 & Armstrong 285)... I, myself am not a CBHS fan nor supporter, but I have not seen this dominate of a team in a LONG time. Best of luck to all the competitors this weekend!

This tournament will be a battle for second place. I see FRHS edging out Baylor, and McCallie/MBA 10-20 points behind that for 3rd/4th.

I like the majority of your picks. I've not seen Parrish this season but I've seen Marchetti a couple times this season. I dont think that any beats Marchetti in his weight class or above or below his weight class but Kaleb Baker. Of course, Olson did give him a very good match in the Ryan finals only losing 5-3.

  7. 106- Trey Chalifoux over Michael Murphy

    113- Oliver over Westbrook

    120- Elsea over Michael Eckhart

126- Hal Fisher over Nick Gray

132- Adam Connell over Mike Akers/Brandon Brunner...although Brunner has won every match up between the two this year, something tells me that Akers has a great shot at pulling off the upset. Most entertaining weight by far this year!

138- Patrick Cosgrove over Sutherland... a move that many did not see coming, Cosgrove dropping down and winning is something that will give FRHS a shot at pulling off an upset over CBHS

    145-Mark Marchetti over Parrish

152- Baker over Kurtz in the first all Memphis state finals match I can remember

    160- Hataway over Popp

    170- Walthall over Parker

    182- Clements over Hoodenpile

    195- McOlgan over Garstin

    220- Mason over Cook

    285- Robertson over York

Team Predictions: I see the Purple Irish scoring a ton of points in the lighter weights... particularly from 106-145, but it not quite being enough to hold off the Purple Wave of Memphis. As much as I would love to see my Irish repeat as State Traditional Champions, it would take a lot this year. A lot of ground will have to be made up in the consolations and we would have to get some help along the way. Nevertheless, should make for an exciting weekend as always.

    1. CBHS

    2. THE Father Ryan High School

    3. Baylor

    4. McCallie

    5. MBA

    6. BA

    7. St. Benedict

    8. The field

Match of the tournament: Mike Akers-Brandon Brunner in Semis at 132

    OW: Kaleb Baker

Coach of the Year: Chris Lewis

Rookie of the Year: Trey Chalifoux

I think that you forgot to consider Pierce Olson at 138. Dont see Cosgrove beating Sutherland or Olson depending on how the brackets work out.

I see Brunner over Akers in a close match and Connell over Brunner in the finals.

Oliver of CBHS is a solid wrestler and seems to be a fine young man and if Baker weren't on his way out could possible grab the honors of OW for the State Tournament!

I agree with the Chalifoux over Murphy.

  8. My predictions:

    106-

Zach Pelky (Indy) dec Salih Musa (Overton)

    113-

Garang Madut (Glencliff) maj dec Kue Htoo (Overton)

    120-

    Jacob Travis (Ravenwood) vs. ?

    126-

    ?

    132-

    Robbie Allen (Indy) vs. ?

    138-

Luke Hamilton (Brentwood) dec Jack Holloran (Franklin)

    145-

Jacob Freeman (Ravenwood) maj dec James Cleveland (Indy)

    152-

Alex Bennett (Franklin) dec Taylor Warren (Ravenwood)

    160-

Tanner Reynolds (Ravenwood) dec Riley Wilson (Indy)

    170-

    ?

    182-

Cliff Terrel (Brentwood) dec Gherorghe Meyer (Franklin)

    195-

    Tommy Venuti (Indy) vs. ?

    220-

Rex Shotts (Ravenwood) dec Josh Filby (Franklin)

    Hwt.-

    Bowen Reau (Ravenwood) vs. ?

Anybody fill in the blanks? Or input?

I think your final predictions are a little off.

Love of MLK would make the finals at 145 or 152. Now, can he beat Jacob Freeman? Not really sure. But, if Freeman were to win I dont think it would be an easy win. It would likely be a 4-2 or 4-3 match.

  9. It's interesting to read the many compliants regarding the poor officiating at the State Duals! Not one person had anything positive to say about the officials.

It's super interesting how overweight dads officiate from the stands while downing their double cheeseburger and drinking a diet coke! I dont believe in a million years that any official intends to make a poor call and potentially cost a kid the match. Mistakes occur as WE are all human! But, I happen to know several officials and I'm hard pressed to believe that these guys were as you say, the worst!

Many of these spectators have NEVER read a rule book or case book. Yet, they some how know better than the official! Hmmmm! If you know better than the official then get your lazy self on the mat and call the perfect match! Otherwise, keep your mouth closed and finish adding to your waist line while sitting in the stands!

  10. I would suspect that Ryan tried to avoid that match up if anything... why would you put your best wrestler up against baker where he would lose? They were smart and wrestled him in a match where he was guaranteed to score points vs. wasting him against super stud baker.

And baylor's 160 is bryson popp, 170 ryan parker, 182 houston clements

That's a good point. But, Marchetti is NO push over and where I think Baker would win I don't think that he would by any means major Marchetti. Would have been a good match to see. They both no doubt should win State Championships in the respective weight classes.

  11. I'm curious about something. Perhaps someone can help me understand why a particular match hasn't taken place this season.

Why did Marchetti and Baker not meet up head to head in the State Duals?

Granted they are not in the same weight class. But, isn't the intent to face off against the very best? Unless Ryan had a strategy in place that they felt would potential yield a Dual State Championship.

  12. Anyone want to throw out predictions team and otherwise? Team score could be very interesting

I think that Christian Brothers will win it all as a team.

    My Individual Picks

    106: Trey Chalifoux, Ryan

    113: Elijah Oliver, CBHS

    120: Alex Elsea, McCallie

    126: Nick Gray, CBHS

    132: Adam Connell, McCallie

    138: Pierce Olson, BGA

    145: Mark Marchetti, Ryan

    152: Kaleb Baker, CBHS

    160: Brandon Hataway, CBHS

    170: Barrett Walthall, CBHS

    182: Houston Clements, Baylor

    195: Big Red, MBA

    220: Big Amos, BA

    285: Tucker York, BA

  13. For the not so smart guy looking to start a petition! Get a grip! It's always unfortunate when a kid gets hurt! But I got word that he got up thinking he got the pin! Now, I was advised that he should have gotten near fall but that apparently would not have changed the circumstances of his injury as he got up thinking he'd won. It's simply an unfortunate situation and I hope the kid will be alright.

  14. Lets clarify the situation. He has West in a position to be pinned but heard the whistle on the other match and jumper up in excitement. He should have been awarded nearfall but wasn't fir some reason. Ethan got an escape and a tskedown to Keagans back but was stopped bc of an injury. Ethan even said he heard Keagans knee pop. Keagan is a beast and props to taking on the challenge. I hope he is able to finish his senior year because he is defintley my favorite to win it.

That's how I heard it as well. Thanks for clearing that up!
