Webb's Mitchell outstanding at KIL wrestling
JOHN SHEARER
Sunday, January 27, 2008
Webb freshman Kyle Mitchell, however, did show up - physically and mentally.
The 119-pounder, who also plays baseball, had a wrestler's equivalent of a perfect game, winning all three of his matches without having a single point scored on him.
"It is probably the best day I have ever had as a wrestler in high school," said Mitchell, who was named the Outstanding Wrestler.
His 12-0 major decision over Jerin Kaldenberg of Bearden following two pins helped Webb finish second in the team competition.
Finishing first with 182 points was Catholic, which had first-place finishes by Jarod Julies (125), Drew Moyers (130), and Greg Shurina (285).
South-Doyle finished third in the 11-team competition, followed by CAK.
Other individual winners were Kyle Walter of Bearden (103), David Morse of CAK (112), Spencer Arnett of Webb (135), Jacob Smith of CAK (140) Matt Moore of Bearden (145), Matt LaScola of Webb (152), Justin Kirkpatrick of West (160), Antez Dieffenderfer of South-Doyle (189), and Steven Fortner of CAK (215).
Mitchell, who began wrestling with the varsity midway through his eighth-grade year, said he has tried to put in extra conditioning work this season.
"I have been doing extra reps during practice and trying to go beyond what the coaches say and just trying to buy into what they are trying to teach us," he said.
Sold on his effort and improvement so far has been first-year Webb coach Ryan Welch.
"He has been working really hard with his wrestling partners," said Welch. "He has gotten a whole lot better this season, you can tell."
Mitchell, who likes the work ethic that wrestling demands, said he would love to place in the Division II state tournament in Chattanooga.
Down the road, his dreams go a little higher.
"I am hoping my senior season to place first in the state," he said.
Not participating in the KIL event were Halls, Gibbs, Farragut and Karns.
Welch said the new rule limiting teams to four regular season tournaments was enacted to keep wrestlers from becoming too exhausted.
Must have forgot the other outstanding wrestler of the tournament, voted by the coaches...Daniel Shurina, who won the best match award with Campbell of Webb, must be a webb graduate

When was the last time WB won the region? Seams like it's been Maryville, Karns, and Farragut since 2000?
Didn't Greenback win it last year
-
Yes he did at 152 Nov30th/Dec 1st and he has not wrestled since then
-
I hear the z-plan is getting a lot of play
-
So, BRB, would you grade improper use of a homonym more or less severely than a misspelled word? And, I know that you can differentiate between the too.
two
-
I don't know who will win, but it should be a great dual meet! good luck to both teams
-
Again Public Schools have a de facto monopoly on students, public schools will get them unless parents pay extra (tax dollars already going to public schools), to get them into private schools, Public school kids get free books, free transportation, and in some cases free lunches. So quit crying about supposed private school advantages.

Is there a link to the completed brackets for the Knox Catholic tournament or a contact to acquire the brackets?
