  1. Lots of very good wrestling over the weekend. Baylor proved that they were the most complete team in the tournament with a pretty dominant win over very good competition.

The Kiski team from PA were a tough bunch as well. While JAson Luster was the big draw for the tournament, I have to say I was more impressed with 140 (I think Henderson?). The toughest weight class in the tournament, and he made it look easy with a pin in the finals against a very good Baylor wrestler Doster.

Luster was as powerful and quick as everyone said he was. But, I have to say that TJ Duncan from McCallie gave he a very good finals match. TJ hung in, and even had a brief momment where he had Luster on his back. I think that if TJ would have opened up a little earlier, could have been an even better result, but good job anyway-I was very impressed.

We got to see the first high school loss from Watson @ 119. Watson is comming off an injury, but loked to be in control of the match. Mental mistakes were the problem. 3 straight cautions (resulting in 1 point), points given up @ the end of the period. We usually do not see this from Baylor wrestlers. It was bound to happen @ some time. Pressures off for the undefeated career.

Just some of the highlights from the tournament. Good luck to all wrestlers for the remainder of the season.

  2. Kellers - Both of them

Waylon Lowe - Jeff co. - This guy was mean on and off the mat

I completely agree with Waylon Lowe, mean guy. He is also doing MMA. He was on last years Ultimate Fighter season, got beat in the fight to see who goes into the house.

  3. What about Quinton "Rampage" Jackson-Raleigh Egypt- Now with the UFC. This guy wore the big junk yard dogg chain in high school and did the big howl when he entered a gym. No one wanted to mess with him. Never knew if he was going to wrestle you or powerbomb you.

  4. Baylor- Schaack Van Deusen-was named nation's top assistant wrestling coach in 2001 by USA Wrestling magazine.

Will be be inducted into the Tennessee Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Van Deusen is in his 31st year as assistant wrestling coach for the Red Raiders and has helped guide the matmen to 11 traditional state championships and five dual titles. As a student, he earned three varsity letters in wrestling (1959-60-61) under legendary coach Luke Worsham and was City Prep champion his junior and senior years.

  5. first off isn't notre dame the team that barecat's son wrestles for? so why does he always stink up to baylor? i'm guessing he's just disappointed that he and his son aren't on their team and regardless if he wants to admit it or not. and another question why won't notre dame move up to DI or DII?

I believe Notre Dame is currently a member of DI. Don't know what you are trying to ask with this question?

  6. Hooker @ 112 looked very impressive against a very strong Baylor wrestler. I had not been able to see him wrestle, but he looks very fluid and tough from all positions on the mat. How old is he? Is he a local kid or a bording student? I had just never heard of him until this year. He has a bright future for McCallie. I hope the Baylor coaches can come up with some sort of gameplan to slow him down. Has he had any heads up matches or common opponents with Bauke from CBHS?

  7. Sorry Hoosierdad, your absurb. If the only reason you wrestle is to be a champion then you are either an egomaniac or a fool. Chamionships may be the ultimate goal but not "what its all about". If that was the case then 98% of all wrestlers for the last 40 years were simply waisting their time.

For Walkenvol: McCallie has ALWAYS used a lot of wrestlers back and forth from JV to Varsity. In fact, over the last 3 seasons, I've seen kids be allowed a tremendous amount of Varsity matches, get to wrestle in the State Duals, and letter at Varisity all the while having never won a starting challenge match. For that kind of experience and exposure to a kid that would be left soley in the JV ranks on other teams, the Big Blue coaching staff is the envy of every program. I know that hurts to hear but for those of us who didn't have thier kids born under an athletic silver star, its huge. So whether or not your list of boys saw some varsity time, (all great wrestlers who I would love to see back on the mat) does not mean that all six were the starters for the tradtional state tournament and then quit the team because of some mystery shake up. I don't have the info in front of me but I believe 4-5 of them wrestled in the JV tournament in 2007. Again, bottom line is that the Blue squad already had either too much talent in front of them, the new work ethic was too much, and/or they simply needed a break. Don't blame any of them one bit but it was not a mass walk out from a troubled team as is implied. The Big Blue is still here to put the hurt on.

BCB, as far as my being an ignorant sl*t, how did you know? Have you been talking to my wife again?

Well allsaints. I agree with you first statement, wrestling is not all about winning, it is about finding out who YOU are as an individual on the mat. But the second statement about the EBE is wrong. I can't tell you how many times I have seen McCallie forfiet a match to a superior wrestler because the "Great coaching staff" did not feel they had a chance to win. That is unfair to the wrestler to not be able to have the experience of stepping out on the mat as State, Baylor/McCallie, or any other big match that would be the highlight of a young mans career.

  8. Clearly Ryan and Baylor are off to strong starts. CBHS is sure to improve and McCallie is always well schooled.

What is the outlook? Top individuals?

Right now their are so many teams that are not full strength yet, very hard to tell.

went the wrong way...after watching video there is a clear two point no-call in favor of Goss only after the ref decides to wait 3 seconds to blow the whistle signifying that the wrestlers were out of bounds. mike bell wrestled well, not taking that away from him, but when wrestlers are knee for knee, side by side and you give it to the other guy then you have to call it the other way...sorry brother.

I don't know, I thought the call was a good one, but it was a very close call. Anyway, you should be proud of your brother and his accomplishments over the years. Being a Baylor fan, every time one of our kids had to wrestle Goss, I knew it was going to be tough. He showed maturity and class on the mat after his loss, he left the way a true champion would leave after a loss.
