  1. QUOTE(StateChamps07 @ Apr 8 2007 - 09:25 PM) 826432702[/snapback]predictions?

i think this will be very close and surprise a lot of people with franklin's talent

Every year this post is started and from what i can remeber Franklin hasnt beat breantwood in atleast 4 years maby longer. Is there any real point in discussing this anymore?

  2. I agree...it was a "team championship" ...managers, injured players, etc....they all deserve a ring if anyone does!

Sad situation. Every girl who practiced and helped the team become state champions should be rewarded with a ring. To deprive the kids of a lifetime memory seems pretty cold hearted. Someone is surely not thinking the situation through carefully.

  3. Yeah, we are all about the fun. We don't teach them anything. I don't know why we even call ourselves coaches. Maybe we should call our practices "recess" instead. :D

I, for one, am sick and tired of people bashing the level of highschool coaching, and highschool playing. Read my previous posts. I agree that club soccer is the number one tool for college recruiting, but does that mean that highschool soccer is worthless? There are many highschool coaches that could coach in club or college, but choose to be in the school setting. There are highschools that run a more complicated tactical game plan than some of the colleges that I have seen, let alone club. This mindset that club is everything and highschool is "peachy keen" is what drives wedges between the two, when they need to be working together to promote TN soccer.

If I read you wrong Soccer37830, I apologize. I just will not sit by and let people say that highschool coaching is "mediocre at best" and that it is "a lot of fun, but that is about it" about something I love and respect.

I will now start climbing down off my soapbox. I need to get my dodgeballs ready for practice. B)

    Well spoken.

  4. This is fun!!! and I'm certainly not embarrased. I would only be embarrased if I was wrong...and I'm not wrong on this one. I have an idea, why don't you ask college coaches why they don't come to high school games. Or do you even know any? I know plenty and can certainly do the research for you if you like. You are right in that coaches can go to club tournaments and have the opportunity to see multiple players and multiple games, but the fact remains that college coaches recruit from club teams because that is where the talent is and developed. Why don't you ask coach MacDonald at FRA or coach Johnson at BA...they are both former college coaches and currently coach high school. I'd be willing to bet they agree with me!

It doesn't make sense for a college coach to come to a high school game to watch one or two players. High school teams have kids from Under 14 to Under 19 playing on the same team. Talent is developed at the club level, talent is present at both levels. A high school team has varying degrees of skill among players that would not really appeal to a college coach. They are looking for players that have potential to play at the college level, and going to a club tournament makes a whole lot more sense. Most players on most high school teams don't aspire to play at the next level. It doesn't have to be a put down of the high school programs.

  5. I said nothing about the coach being a "baller". But even you and I with our limitted "middle-aged" athleticism, can breakdown and demonstrate a basic fundamental skill/move. I see club players get lazy because the coach doesn't stay on the the simple fundamentals of receiveing the ball with your toe up. But if a coach has never experienced the ball "doinging" away off a "toe down" or "hard foot", then they just yell "don't lose it" not "get your toe up & soften your leg". Tactics aren't worth the paper they are printed on if your team can't exacute the fundamentals. HS play is sloppy often because there is very little time spent on drilling the fundamentals. Most coaches don't want to take the time to modulate a training session and simply spend most of their time scrimmaging where the majority of the players will watch 2or3 players involved in the play. Can you imagine what it would be like if our athletes speant even 20-30 minutes of the HS practice on individual and partner skills? But that would take some planning and be more demanding than sending them on a run and returning to some shooting drill or scrimmaging. Tactis are overated until you get to the highest level! The rest of the world dominates us because they are "more skilled". Give me 11 players who have great fundamentals and I will smoke your team of tactics in my "hoo...kah" pipe!

OK... I'll say it.... I am sick of watching HS "kick ball" and the "let's race o the ball" game. Keep-away anyone?

I do however agree with the "Psycho-babel" part... coaches who can pull on heart strings and create a healthy team environment have a BIG edge.

You seem really down on the high school game. Are there opportunities available for those players who want a higher level than high school during the high school season? I'm not sure if there are teams or even individual kids that don't play high school ball but maybe that is something someone would want to consider doing.

  6. It that case, I'm not sure that would be a choice. As Rookie45 said, its almost impossible for a AD to make a living on being an AD alone. It would have to be a teacher that is very involved in athletics. Otherwise, the position would almost certainly have to be a coach of something.

In Williamson County every AD is a teacher and many are also coaches. No school can just go out and get anyone to be the AD unless he is going to also be a faculty member.

  7. St Agnas played a weak schedule overall. If Brentwood, Bearden, Hendersonville, Franklin, Brentwood Academy, Notre Dame, Baylor and a host of other teams played St. Ag's schedule, they could have done the exact same thing. St Ag beat Collerville 1-0. so what, Franklin beat Collerville 4-0. SA beat Franklin 4-0 on there first game of the day and Franklin's second game and Franklin missing 4 starters. SAA beat BGA 1-0 in preseason, and Franklin beat BGA 1-0 in regular season. Baylor or Brentwood Academy would have done the exact same thing if playing the same schedule. Look at Baylors schedule and say it wasnt toughter. SAA should have scheduled someone besides cream puffs. And DII soccer doesnt mean much. You only have a handfull of teams that are forced into there own bracket (unfairly so i might add), but nonetheless, the same teams will make state every year, due to the small number of teams period. The same DII teams can make state every year even with Mediocre teams. Even A/AA has different teams each year making runs, which makes it fun for them. In DII, the same few teams. Winning a state championship in a division that only has a couple dozen schools statewide isnt much to brag about or playing those schools and bragging about not giving up goals all year. A lot of schools would have done the exact same thing if they had played the overall weak schedule SAA played.

I think when you get down to the last 8 or so teams in any division the quality of the teams equals out. It doesn't matter how many teams overall play in that sense.

D II teams have to deal with the way things are set up by TSSAA. The split bought on a sharing of the wealth in terms of the number of state champions and lead to weaker regular season games for those in every division, not just D II. I think it is pretty impressive for any team to get to state in any division and it isn't exactly fair to demean the value of the championship for anyone.

Yes, SAA is a strong team, but they played on overall weak schedule. No matter what you say, that point cant be defended because you can look at the schedule and see they only played a few ranked teams and weak teams all the rest. Sorry, but im not impressed with the record or going winning state in the small and generally weak DII division.

  8. Has anyone checked out the BOX SCORE stats TSSAA has posted on their website with the brackets? I was at the game, didn't keep count of everything, but things don't seem accurate, I do know ND definitely had more than 2 corner kicks.

Congrats to both teams for all the skill, effort, and heart they showed in this match . . . you are all winners !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

State tournament official game stats leave a lot to be desired.

  9. Siegel was up 1-0 the entire way until the 79th minute when Franklin tied with 1:10 to go. Franklin then scores with a minute left in the first OT. Siegel scores on a corner in the 2nd OT. They go through the two 5 minute OT's scoreless and it goes to Penalty kicks. Franklin is up 3-2 in pk's. Siegel keeper makes a stop and Siegel goes up 4-3. Last Franklin player goes up and its over the cross bar siegel wins. Some were picking Franklin some were picking Siegel on here but excited because of the type of game it was.

Congrats to siegel. I will eat the crow and not complain. Siegel got the job done. Sounds like it was a pretty good game. Hard to lose but the Rebels will be back.

  10. Guys, I didn't know an old fat man could laugh and cry at the same time! What a thread.

There are several old neighborhood "legends" that need to be confirmed or debunked. Here are some to think about:

TPS/TIS: Ed Echols was, I believe, the only 5-time all state lineman in history. This would have been somewhere in the '40's, I think. Anybody remember?

    Litton: What about Billy Kee?

West: AK Smith, who later became a rather successful basketball coach/concessions manager?

Maplewood: If the NIL survived into, say, 1981 or so, what about the Goodloe and Young tandem Mama Johnson had in his backfield in the late '70s/early 80's?

Pearl: Keeping in the same time frame, Amos Drummond?

MT Juliet: Maybe not in the NIL, but a lot of Nashville teams faced them. Had a linebacker by the name of Tim Majors who was almost as good as EJ Junior (but not quite).

Finally, anybody remember the name Budro Harrington?

    Thanks---

Budro Harrington, if I remember correctly, had the distinction of being the first white player to sign with Tennessee State. I think he played at East? Not sure though of that or the year he graduated.

For some reason that fact always stuck in my head, I don't know if he played at TSU or whatever became of him.

  11. Before anyone takes the job they need to look at a few things if they wish to have a winning program:

    1. Practice facilities: field is small and not in very good condition

    2. Strength & Conditioning: Is the room large enough so that the whole team can workout and do you have enough equipment

    3. Will they allow you to hire your own staff?

    4. Will you be able to have a 1/8 coach to player ratio including the varsity, jv and freshmen teams?

    5. Would they allow you to bring your own certified strength & conditioning coach into the school?

This all sounds crazy but you need to know what you are going to be allowed to do before you ever take the job. It would be foolish to take the job if the school system is not going to give you the tools to have a winning program.

Who would want to be the head coach when his Athletic Director is the ex head coach? A pretty weird situation if you ask me. Potential for some built in strife from the get go.

  12. Still wondering how people pick Hendersonville over Siegel <_<

Siegel beat them 1-0 in preseason and 3-0 at Katie Hunter

Doubt that they will play each other. If either of these teams is looking to a rematch they won't get that far. Franklin may just may have more than Siegel is expecting.

  13. I have no dog in this hunt, but how will a #4 ranked team, 19-3-1, Goal Diff 67 beating a #7 ranked team, 16-5-1, Goal Diff 47 be considered an upset? It does appear that Franklin has played more ranked teams.

Even if they beat Siegel, I don't think that Franklin can take Farragut that I beleive will come out over Colliersville.

On the other side, I beleive that Hendersonville will make it all the way through to the finals. To follow the scenario all the way through, Siegel beats Hendersonville, Franklin loses to Hendersonville. Barring injuries, and bad luck, I think this is Siegel's year to win it all.

Rankings don't mean a thing at this point actually at any point. Goal difference and records have no bearing on what will happen in this game or any other in the tournament.

Siegel may beat Frankiln, maybe, but they won't take the big prize this year.

  14. I will have to agree with Soccerdawg to a point. I think Franklin will be a lot tougher than they are given credit for, but I don't think Siegel will be a cake walk. I think Franklin has played the tougher schedule, and I have great respect for the coaching of Jimmy and Laban. Franklin will be ready, and I think we may have an upset of sorts here.

Siegel may upset Franklin but they will not win state.

  15. How many soccer games were played on the field last week? It's not like soccer is 5 games a year like football is. I guarentee for the schools that do have a soccer field, if the football team was to try to play on it soccer fan would turn hooligan in Tennessee.

Maybe enough to equal one football game? Nothing like them big old soccer girls lining up, digging in and going after each other with those cleats that could dig a hole to China in about thirty mintes.

  16. just to let eveyone know, the girls soccer game is being played over on their practice field over at the middle/intermed complextoday, I guess someone realized that they have tore up the football field enough. Why they could not convert that to the soccer facility for both boy's and giirls is beyond me. Besides no one goes to their gmes other than parents and a couple of parents.

The football program is what gives money to all of the no-revenue sports via the consessions. If the football stadium is going to be used as a multi sports facility the county sould put some money into it and put down field turf..... :P:D

One girls soccer game is about the equivalent of maybe one quarter of a football game in terms of field wear and tear. Using that as an excuse for the field being in such poor condition is a really lame excuse. It sounds like there is enough football on the field to tear it up pretty dad gum well. A nasty field after the amount of rain that fell and the previous use of the field is to be expected. If you want a good field get the artificial turf and let everyone play on it and save a bunch of money in the long run. Don't know where the money comes from in Knoxville so I don't know if that is feasible, but it would make sense.

I forget that the parents of soccer players are not that important in the overall scheme of things, thanks for reminding me.

  17. Feel free to outline the personal attacks I have made, my last post excluded. In the other thread your only arguement for a "personal attack" is the "football IQ" comment. And I firmly stand by that. Anyone who wants to analyze football games (especially high school) by looking at 'trends' from previous sesaons is not overflowing with logic or cerebral fortitude.

The guy made a stupid comment, plain and simple. What would you call his refering to the "worst region 6 team"? A stroke of genius?

I am not here to make friends. I challenge anyone to present a post that had inaccurate information, or unjustifed rebutals.

If you don't like someone talking down to you there is a simple solution. Don't make stupid (and totally inaccurate) comments.

There are plenty of people on here that just ignore me. I don't like it, but if you don't want to read what I have to say it is for the following reasons:

You can't stand a good debate

You can't stand someone who is willing to call stupidity, foolishness, and inaccuracy by its name

You can't stand that I am right.

Goodbye now, I expect this will be the last post some of you choose to read.

You take this stuff way too serious man.

  18. I said this all year, Independence is the MOST OVERRATED TEAM in the midstate. The last two weeks proved that. the Ravenwood stomping really killed this team. The only big win for Indy came against an injury ridden Franklin who was playing sub-par football at the time.

As for Brentwood, the score against Centennial didn;t tell the whole story. They didn't play with any intensity and 21 of their points came with drives starting inside CHS's 20. Centennial came very close to pulling off that upset and I'm sure Crawford wasn't happy with his team's performance. Brentwood REALLY needs to pick up their play level in order to make it this year.

In the end, I think Brentwood will rebound and pick up the win in a close game. I do think that Ravenwood will play tough against Dickson, but I don't think they will pull it off. Indy takes the 4th spot assuming they can beat Columbia.

    Brentwood 28

    Independence 21

    Region standings

    1. Dickson Co.

    2. Franklin

    3. Brentwood

    4. Indepndence

The Bruins take the win by a 17-14 score.

  19. True enough about the obnoxious fan behavior. Mr. Anthony may be a wonderful person, but if you are from an opposing school and you have a tough home loss, someone blowing the school bus horn may seem cute and within school spirit to you, but I can guarantee you from the other side it is like rubbing salt in the wound. I've witnessed it a couple of times and what may be a celebratory action to you is an "in your face" action to the opposing team. The horn blowing is well know around Middle TN and very much unappreciated. It's tough enough for the kids, and adults for that matter, to accept a loss without a bus driver rubbing it in your face.

Simple enough solution to your problem. Don't lose to them.

Players cheering on the field after a big win is the norm. Always has been. Franklin blowing the school bus horn was nothing more than giving your school a taste of its own medicine. I'm sure they enjoyed it immensely. As far as this issue being a matter of opinion, this topic comes up each year in all the forums. The only people who have defended the action so far are those responsible for allowing it to take place.

    Same as previous solution.

  20. i think the polls have ran there course for the year

so thats the last one of the year

If you didn't have gray hair before this season began I bet you do now. Your rankings made the season that much more interesting.

    Thanks!

  21. Let me see if I have this right:

It is not necessarily a red card offense to do a flying header as long as the attacking player is seriously going for the ball, irrespective of the position of the keeper and irrespective of whether the attacking player fails to make contact with the ball but accidently heads the keeper square in the chest or shoulder area instead. For purposes of discussion let us assume that the hit is neither late nor early, but rather is simultaneous with the keeper catching or attempting to catch the ball.

If there are any qualified refs reading this forum, I would certainly like them to address this question.

It could make a difference in how one instructs ones attacking players to play crosses and corners.

In the box the player should attack the ball. Not much time to consider the options in terms of results of the play. Just attack the ball.

  22. Here is my point:

It is a classic move by people to state that the officiating was poor for both teams after a loss and then claim that they aren't complaining. You try to throw people off by claiming that the other team was hurt too. It's happened two games in a row.

So what, everybody and his mother does it. Beat another dead horse.
