Big win for the Morristown East girls tonight. After giving up a late big lead to Morristown West in the Eastman tournament over the weekend, it would have been easy for them to be down going to the west side of town tonight. Sounds like they came in fired up and opened this conference race back up a little bit. Congrats Lady Canes!
  3. Very good Ksgovols, you are 99% correct. The forces that act on the ball at the point of impact are supplied by the batter. In the case of the hammer, it depends on whether the hammer was thrown or is still under the control of the "hammerer". However, I still contend that the source of the "ouch" stems from the principals of "conservation of momentum" and "conservation of energy", which both require consideration of MASS. Mass has yet to be introduced in all of the discussions above, and that is really my only point. In other words....a piece of popcorn impacting a batter at 60mph is going to ouch less than a softball impacting a batter at 60mph. Which has more mass...a baseball of a softball?
  4. Top 10 AAA "Strength Rankings" as of 04/15/08 1. Rossview 2. Cherokee 3. Morristown West 4. Beech 5. Morristown East 6. Ooltewah 7. Powell 8. Brentwood 9. Farragut 10. Rhea County Obvious misses in this list are Mt. Juliet, Soddy Daisy, Maryville, Riverdale due to their extremely tough schedules. Reflects impact of weakness in district 1 (district 2 wins over district 1 teams who have an overall strong record)
  5. Nice physics lesson but neither ball is being acted on by "forces" once they leave the pitcher's hand with the exception of wind resistance and gravity. They do however have "momentum" and "kinetic energy" which are the sources of the "ouch" when it makes contact with the batter. To answer the question, you need to know weight of the ball and velocity. Bottom line.....both hurt like the devil!

Not sworn off, just a little superstitious and not wanting to say anything that will break the Chief's momentum. They played great over the weekend. Bats came alive on Saturday in a big way. Got a couple of first time home run hitters over the weekend. Two from Hughes and one from Barnett. One of Hughes' was a 2 run "back breaker" in the championship game that the centerfielder actually got a glove on over the fence. Ewing also added another to her resume over the weekend. Defense was superb. No hitter against DB. One hitter in the championship. Don't recall seeing more than one or two errors over the last 5 games. Something about the rigors of tournament play that seems to bring out the best in these girls. Unbelievable how the rain held off for the most part and allowed the tournament to finish. Might have been the only semi-dry few square miles in all of Tennessee over the weekend. BTW...another first-time home run hitter tonight against Greenville. Gilbert joined the club.

Signing is not possible under NCAA rules as a junior, however, under the right circumstances, some young players are able to verbally commit to a school. It is my understanding that this terrific young lady has verbally commited to Liberty.
  9. Final Pool Games: Unicoi 7 Sullivan South 0 Cherokee 11 Dobyns Bennett 0 Elizabethton 6 Tennessee 1 Unaka 7 Volunteer 2 First Round of Bracket: Unicoi 20 Tennessee 1 Elizabethton 8 Dobyns Bennett 6 Unaka 3 Sullivan South 1 Cherokee 11 Volunteer 0 Bracket semi-finals: Unicoi 3 Elizabethton 0 Cherokee 11 Unaka 0 Championship; Cherokee 3 Unicoi 0 Unicoi folks did a fantastic job getting this tournament in this weekend. Seems the rain avoided Erwin just enough so that with the hard work of UCHS parents, the girls could play ball and when the last out was made in the championship game and the fans were safely in their cars, the heavens opened up. BTW....Love those Taters & Onions Congrats Lady Chiefs!
  10. The word from the field crew at NFS is to expect at least a one hour delay Saturday morning, but don't fret.....the show will go on.

Granted, this early in the season it is tough to get meaningful information from strenth of schedule. But, Cherokee has lost three games by a total of 4 runs to teams that have a combined record of about 30 wins and 4 losses. Of those 4 losses, one was to each other and 2 of the other 3 were to private schools in Chatanooga. That's where the strength of schedule is. Here is another interesting method to evaluate where teams really are this early in the seasson. Take a look at the graph coacht provides on the "analyze this schedule" link. Project a best fit line to the data points on the chart to get an estimate of shere the line would cross zero. This point on the X-axis is an estimate of where that team's long term winning percentage would be based on who they have played so far and the run differential in those games. Cherokee's link: http://tennessee.coacht.com/inside/schedul...amp;seasonid=69 This chart would indicate the long term win percentage of Cherokee might be in the 85% to 90% range. The same analysis on JC indicates a long term winning percentage of around 60%. I know.....way too much analysis, but interesting, don't you think.

Pending seeing the results from Science hill and Jeff County tonight, I would say it would be more like 4 out of top 5. Unless Rutledge were included, then 4 out of top 6.

Check out the tricitiessports.com northeast tn softball rankings. I can agree with Unicoi, but beyond that, there seems to be some district 1 bias going on. http://www.tricitiessports.com/default.asp...rts&he=.com Rutledge at undefeated and outscoring opponents 80 to 1 would have to make it in there somewhere.

OK, after a weekend of sulking, Statman has a new outlook on things. Another tough 1 run conference loss for the lady chiefs Friday afternoon to a hard hitting Morristown West team. Now, with two conference losses, the regular season hopes of the lady chiefs will require a strong second half. Take a week off from conference action this week with a big tournament coming up at Unicoi this weekend. Maybe the break from conference play will be good for working out some kinks and getting them ready to win a close game or two the second time around. I agree Mwtfan, IMAC showed well at Anderson Co. Sounds like the field wasn't that strong, or is IMAC that much stronger this year? How is your pitcher, Mwtfan?

    IMAC 2008

Hmmm....I do find that interesting. I can't imagine West, in particular, would have a problem with a team crowding the plate a little. Through the years, I have witnessed some of the "wildest" games you can imagine where the name of the game was to 1) take the chalk away and 2) take the plate away. Sorry Mwtfan.....could not resist.

OK....Let me see if I can get the blood flowing on the IMAC thread!!! Someone explain to me the "game delay" and "re-lining of the batter's box" in the M East/M West game last night? I've heard about three different versions.

    IMAC 2008

Friday's game between Cherokee and West is shaping up to be a big one. Cherokee can level the field and basically start the regular season over again, or West can claim a commanding lead going into the back half of regular season. Looks like the formula of success among the top 4 is to win all your home games and try to steel one on the road, Not sure you can call West at Frank Lorino an away game though. Stay tuned.

Any Saturday news from the Jeff County bunch ?
  23. This is so unfortunate for such a great pitcher in her senior year. Hope for a speedy recovery. I thought something must have happened to her when I saw the scores coming out of their trip to Florida. Just had a discussion today with Mrs. Statman about taking our daughter to get some metal cleats. I think I will hold off on that one.

We got GPS, Baylor and Stone memorial in pool play down there last year. The biggest surprise was the GPS speed (Offensively and Defensively)....incredible. Congrats on making it into Gold and good luck.

Mwtfan, Appreciate the scoreboard updates from down there. Looks like enough to get you in the Gold bracket. How did you like that GPS speed! Good Luck. Any of you Jeff County folks know scores from Soddy Daisy, pass them along or update the scoreboard, please. Also, if you stumble across any Science Hill scores, pass them along too. Thanks
