  1. Did I read that Coach Smith was not going to be teaching any classes? If correct, how well will the faculty @ SHHS accept Smith? It was my understanding, teaching was a problem @ Independence. I assume if it is correct, Smith had better win BIG & WIN NOW!

Bless his ever loving HEART, good luck Coach Smith.

Is Smith allowed to hire/bring any assistant football coaches with him?

  2. From what I am told, Overbay will be Smith's defensive coordinator. This should make a lot of the boys on the team happy because he is a popular coach among the players (particularly the defensive players).

Interesting, looking forward to see what shakes out!

  3. "I do think that Overbay would have done a good job had he been given the opportunity. The others do have experience as Head Coaches though."

I'm not so sure what it is you see in Overbay. Name the different schools he has coached at to gather his coaching philosophy and how many different coaches has he worked under? Not trying to be negative by any stretch. I'm sure he could be a good receivers coach under Smith, if he extends the offer.

  4. Topper,

Is Red Man interested? I think you may have played for him @ CN????

Just know what I read in the Johnson City Rag (Press). I have not spoken with him personally about the opening. I do know he was and still is well thought of in Johnson City.

The Red Man has coached many over the years in Jefferson City & Johnson City.

I do think the world of Coach Turner and believe he would once again be a GREAT hire for Science Hill and Johnson City.

  5. Why did he leave in the first place? His time was before I knew anything about SHHS football, ever since my son has been in the school system it has been bowles.

His daughter was a freshman/soph in high school at the time. She missed Jeff Co. (she and her brother grew up in Jeff Co. w/ dad being at C-N for many years) and was alittle homesick. He was there for two years ('92 & '93 seasons), 1st round in '92 (last year TSSAA took only the top two from each region), 3rd round in'93. Lost to Oak Ridge by 3 points in a driving rain storm. OR kicker had not made a FG all year and hit a 41 yarder. SHHS had a shot to tie with less than 10 seconds left and missed a chip shot to tie. Your son would love playing for the Red Man!

  6. What was kept pretty quiet back in the mid-90's when Turner returned to CN was that Ken Sparks had verbally accepted the head coaching job at Samford. Within 24 hours after "sleeping" on it, he changed his mind. Well, during this short time frame, Coach Turner was lured back to Jefferson City to take over the controls of Head Coach. So, the Eagle Club gladly put him as director to make up for the mishap. The red man is the real deal, a complete football coach blended with unbelievable people-skills. CN wouldn't let him go just too easy. Has any of the DB coaches been mentioned as a possibility?

the big money people at samford didn't want kenny.

  7. According to the Science Hill team meeting Monday, the "powers that be" are still looking for a coach in and out of state. There was NO indication of a decision concerning a coach and his staff yet.

Something that was mentioned also was the renovations needed at Memorial stadium and the possible joint venture with ETSU and the returning of Buc football year after next. Science Hill and ETSU may be sharing a football stadium again.

And as for Mike Turner . . . why did he leave in the first place?

You may want to ask him when he returns to Johnson City.

    JJ

  8. Turner is a good man. He has a good job as Director of the Eagle Club. I am sure the pay is pretty good plus his football money. I would hate to lose him @ CN.

Amen brother! Mike Turner is a class act. Johnson City would love to have him back in charge of The Toppers. I view him as the individual bringing the community back together. He is well thought of in JC.

One heck of a football coach also, Graham doesn't want to face Turner and his veer offense again.

    The Red Man returns!

  9. You might be right, but they've got far greater problems to solve than John Bowles. The town it's self has never been a football town. Just ask ETSU. I remember a D-B assistant telling me that before a big game in JC, the fans were taunting them BEFORE the game with "we'll get you guys in basketball." They will have to overhaul their whole acceptance of what football is before firing one coach will matter. Do you really think that in a town like Johnson City they would accept an old time football coach? I mean one of those guys who works them like dogs, makes them hit, makes them practice hard, and demands from them what winning coaches demand? Do you really think they will let a new coach bring in 3 or 4 assistants who are in-your-face types that preach the toughness of football and that basketball and baseball are sports for wimps? Nope, not in that town. When they get an old school guy who tells interfering parents where they can go, they will have the Johnson City Commission holding special meetings to run him out of town. It can be done there, but it will take far more than running one man out of town.

stony: You know how things in JC work. The present coach has been in office for 8 years. A rollercoaster record, you might say. The JC powers must be dying off. I'm surprised he has been at the helm this long.

  10. I have no clue. Is that one of the assistants? Todd Barnett or maybe Randy Ferrell might get the job. I dunno Im just randomly namin names.

Mike Turner is the OC @ Carson-Newman. Former head football coach @ Science Hil (1992 & 1993).

Randy Ferrell, what a joke! You jest?!

  11. It would be nice to keep this thread about the game. I'm not in a position to talk about who should be heading the program but it's more than about this season, it's about the direction. If someone wants to start that thread then do it but if not I would like to see some talk of the game on this one.

I think running the veer offense (Coach Turner's version) would give Jeff County fits! Just like it did in the early '90's.

  12. This is unreal, one minute the Toppers are the greatest thing since sliced bread. But now you are ready to get rid of the coach. I didn't see the coach miss a shot last night. The Cougars just took it to them, they were the tougher team last night. For goodness sake, GIVE THE CENTRAL PLAYERS SOME CREDIT. SH supposedly has a D1 player that should have carried his team "but couldn't".

Lets look at the whole picture. 9 losses for the year, is that considered a Science Hill Standard?
