  1. Rankin is a winner and he'll make a championship school even better :D

Yes, and they did it without some key contributors like Lanxter, Shiverdecker, Hicks, Stultz, Hodge, etc. Coach Rankin told some folks recently that the runningback depth is just crazy for a school as small as Alcoa.

  2. You must have had your eyes closed during the game then. I don't know if you noticed the leading tacklers in the state. Lets see Jeremy Miller, Joseph Bennett, Wes Stooksbury. All from CAK. Alcoa only had a 3 man team last year.

GoVols14 the only one with eye problems is yourself. No offense, CAK is an excellent school with an excellent mission, but they are not on the same planet as Alcoa Football. Honestly, I think the game will end in a larger Alcoa margin this year. JMHO.

There is no way I want that Alcoa/Maryville game dropped. There would be a riot if that happened. For us lifelong Maryville fans who went to school at Maryville and played ball there nothing is bigger than Alcoa/Maryville. I am sure the Alcoa fans feel the same way.

I don't want the William Blount and Heritage games dropped either. If I could drop some games it would be South Doyle,Clinton or Lenoir City.

RebelRon I couldn't agree more. When I lived in Nashville people would always ask when they knew I played at Alcoa: "What was the big game really like." It will never be dropped that I can see and I don't live in Blount County.

  4. He said your coach had class. So by your definition he said your new coach is a Maryville person who always looks down his nose at Alcoa. I really don't see you you deduced all of this from the statement about Rankin having too much class. By the way that '89 Tornado Team had.... I had better not say it. They were an awesome team. I even drove to Marion County to root for the Tornados. That Shannon Mitchell was fun to watch. He had a lot of .... (not gonna say it). I remember talking to his mother at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a real nice lady. She had a lot of ....not gonna say it. By the way I think Alcoa beats CAK by 10-14 this year.

Thanks Red Rebels, that was a classy post! I agree the 89' team was a great team, but I wasn't a part of that team. They finished 19th in USA Today's final top 25 poll at the end of that season. One of the 3 best East Tennessee teams I have seen including 86' Austin East and 87' Jefferson County, also USA Today top 25 teams. Anyway, we appreciate your support of Alcoa athletics.

  5. I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers or anything, but why is everyone saying Rankin is firing shots at Maryville?

He said he wasn't scared of them...so what? Is every coach SUPPOSED to be scared of Maryville? Maybe that's one reason...actually I know it's one reason we haven't been successful at beating Maryville in the past few years. I think Reid was nervous about playing Maryville, and that rubbed off on some of the players. Rankin's just saying he's not going to let that happen, he's played against some the best, so it's not like Maryville's going to be something new.

Will we win? Who knows? But, maybe if Rankin assures his players that they can play with Maryville, we might see a good game. But once again, who knows?

Good point Tom142. The same could be said about Maryville being scared of Alcoa in Basketball. I mean they have had better talent before, but Alcoa just rolls the ball out and they usually fall apart. They have gotten better in the last few years though.

  6. Some good points BUT......Same old song and dance, we got better athletes, but lose the games! Man for man Maryville beats Alcoa even with those so called better athletes. Check the scores and records the past 75 years there sport. Ever stop to think maybe you don't have better athletes? Maryville hears that bull every year. If you think Alcoa has athletes, you need to watch Melrose! By the way Maryville beat them twice in the past two years.

Lastly, you said "Alcoa High School (The) Home of so many professional and college athletes it would be impossible to mention them all".

Name them? Maryville has a few of those substandard Athletes at the college level as well. Maybe you saw the Humphrey kid in the National Championship basketball game last week?

Good luck, but Maryville still owns Alcoa and I know it hurts. Sorry that is just how it is.

Humphrey? Who else? Spratlin? What is that class act doing now?

  7. Statement? CAK will give Alcoa all they want, but Alcoa should win the contest by 10-14 late.

Coach Rankin does not need to make a statement, he has too much class for that bull!

Professor Rebel why are you concerning yourself with insignificant 2A "stuff." What does "class" have to do with it anyway? To me that is just a code word used by Maryville people who always look down their noses at Alcoa. You are always looking to jump on the morals, ethics and family values at Alcoa. You sure are an expert.

  8. You're out of your mind. There is no way Alcoa will kill CAK by 40, not even 30. Alcoa is not going to be as good with their 2 stars gone(Lindsey and Warren). CAK will win by 3.

No offense, but you must not follow Alcoa football. They will be just as good next year. They have "tons" of speed and some heavy duty hitters on defense. Plus, Coach Rankin will want to make an early statement against an up and coming PRIVATE school. It will be 40 plus!

  9. First of all let me offer my congratulations to the Alcoa High School players and fans for finally getting a real first class and talented football coach. Coach Rankin is a great coach and the Alcoa fans & players have a right to celebrate and be happy. I am happy for them for some of the same reasons mentioned above and a few other reasons as well. But let’s not kid ourselves, Coach Rankin is here because Blount County is a great place to raise a family and getting him an Assistant Principle position with a coaching stipend is a great spot for a tenured coach in Tennessee. It also helps prepare the Coach for the opportunity to exit football and join the administration ranks in the future if he desires and affords his older kids to attend UT as he did. A great move for him no question.

As for football, Alcoa is a great place to coach, if the coach is given the latitude to do things his way. Under the current AD that will be the case with a future legend like Rankin. But Alcoa players better get ready to work as a team and get used to discipline like they have seldom seen or shown. There will be little or no trash talking, players taking plays off, show boating and big I’s and little U’s! Rankin won’t stand for it, he does not have too. 2A is the weakest Class in East TN and Alcoa will not be the media and local pressure cooker that was Riverdale. Rankin helped create that monster and is ready to move on. He will be successful at Alcoa but it will take more than a coach to beat Maryville more than once every six or seven years. And make no mistake he is smart enough to know the local score. I believe there are many Alcoa fans and I personally know many who would do anything to beat Maryville. We know there are many who hate Maryville for its success and the perception what kind of people we are. I will enjoy watching a Rankin coached team more often, but he won’t beat Maryville in the short term and may never! Now you might think that a bit forward but as reported by the Daily Times Rag the first shot has been fired by Alcoa’s new coach.

    Thursday 6 Apr 06

“Before an enthusiastic gathering of Alcoa supporters at the school, Rankin touched on all the right notes. He vowed not to play favorites with first-teamers and bench-warmers. Spoke of Alcoa's storied tradition. Said ``I think we can beat them. They don't scare me.'' They, of course, being Quarles' Maryville Rebels, owners of a five-game winning streak against Alcoa and five Class 4A state titles since 2000.”

I am glad he is not scared because I can assure you no one in Maryville is scared of him with Riverdale or Alcoa! He does have that thought "He thinks" we (Alcoa)can beat Maryville. He did not say what the Maryville Players know, they KNOW They will beat Alcoa! There is a difference.

But why be scared it’s only football, nothing more! Good luck to Coach Rankin and Alcoa.

Good, I hope you feel very confident. Fear is not a bad thing when channeled correctly.

  10. He will certainly have an easier schedule, other than the game with Maryville, than he had to play at Riverdale.

I was pretty close to what was going on last Thursday and Friday and not ONCE was beating Maryville mentioned. You are just patting yourself on the back. It will be interesting this year.

  11. I really think there is too much speculation as to why he chose to leave. My Father had a chance to visit with the Rankin's at the Alcoa Booster club meeting. It was definitely a family decision. I truely believe they wanted to enjoy the "small town" life again. They seem like good people and I think he will be a credit to the school system. They are very excited about the move.

  12. Folks close to the Riverdale program knew this last week

:thumb: You are correct. Quite a few have known for a week. As an alum I cannot be happier. He won't take crap from parents. The future is very bright. The school is getting ready to grow like it never has before. They expect 70 plus kids out this spring. Coach Rankin knows this. Heck, he steps into a situation where he has a top 50 national player in Sykes and probably a top 150 player in Shiverdecker. I am anxious to see him handle the QB Randall Cobb. I think he is a mini version of Michael Vick. He knows how to coach athletic QB's. With all seriousness, Erick Locke has nothing on Randall Cobb. The seventh grade class is loaded with talent as well. I could go on and on.....

  13. Just assuming, that's all, taking into consideration he'd be going from a 5-A school to a 2-A. Plus, there's a lot of work that the hc does that he doesn't get paid for.

If he already did get offered the job, there'd be a whole slew of ticked off parents, that's for sure. I don't think the admin is that stupid (I would hope not, anyway).

Ticked off parents? Becasue of Nix?

  14. Alcoa slapped Goodpasture around like "rag dolls." Just kidding. Actually Goodpasture held up nicely to Alcoa's two Defensive Tackles, Avery and White, who were as good as any tandem in the state.....any classification. Goodpasture was young also. They should be tough this year.
