Buford Gladney (spelling) was the SH coach at that time and I remember them running that exact same play a time or two more in subsequent years. Every blue moon, during practice, our coach would run that play. It would be just random and, if the defense didn’t catch it, we would have to run. Can’t remember exactly but, there was a tale. Seems the WR would be at or behind the line of scrimmage facing the coach who was close but on the sideline.
Also can’t remember when but seems I was watching a YouTube video of trick plays and they had one example of it in there. Maybe NFL? Then, commentator said it was now illegal.
Could be that it was illegal in HS football then but refs just didn’t know it or catch it. Anyhow, was a good trick play.
