  1. Both methods have drawbacks, but PK's has history on its side. One of the great things about soccer is that it has relatively few rules and they never change. Sustaining something that allows for comparisons accross States, Nations and generations is important. That's why I say keep the PK's.

  2. There are actually 10 teams in the top 50 list. You have 9 above, plus Catholic is listed at 47.

    2. Brentwood

    7. Father Ryan

    15. Christian Brothers

    16. Houston

    18. Baylor

    19. McCallie

    38. Pope John Paul II

    42. Knoxville West

    43. Farragut

    47. Knoxville Catholic

Very impressive achievment for TN teams.

  3. Congratulations to Brentwood on the NSCAA ranking and for the hard fought victory over Houston.

I'm an East TN'er, and a fan of Farragut, Bearden, Catholic, CAK et. al., but the rankings have at least some validity and 24-0 is pretty impressive...and 16 or so consecutive shutouts has got to mean something.

This ranking, and the overall competitiveness of TN soccer (Brentwood won, but I'm sure they would admit they had some tough battles along the way) makes it all the more disappointing to me that no TN soccer player, male or female, was recognized on the Parade All America teams published this morning.

  4. I think this will be a close one. If Diego is healthy and truly back to his speed I take Oak Ridge 3-2. If Diego not up to running as much then Hendersonville could win a close one... lets say reverse 3-2 Hendersonville

I like this prediction except I go with fewer goals--2-1 either way.

  5. Updated 5-19-08

Impact USA locks up first place in U-16 D1 state league. KFC Mustangs lock up second place in their first season in Division 1. TNFC Blue Locks up 3rd place.

Lady Kickers and Brentwood Beat are in contention for the two remaining state tournament slots with only one league game remaining (Lady Kickers vs. Falcons)

Lady Kickers - Must win vs. Falcons to advance

Brentwood - Advances with loss or tie by Lady Kickers.

BUSC Starz, TNFC White, Falcons, and Redoubt FC are eliminated from contention.

Looks like the Kickers won their last game because TNSoccer has them as the 4th place team in the State League.

  6. He was parking his flat bed gator and it got stuck in high gear causing him to get stuck under the bottom of the bleachers at the field of dreams, where the walkway is in front of the seats. The flat bed hit the bleachers and could not go any farther, causing it to bounce off and hit it again and again eventually bending the steering wheel back, causing more pressure on him. A man walking his dog found him and called for help

His circulation was completely cut off, and he was loosing conciousness fast. They got him out and immediately called 911. He had an inch indention just below his chest. A helicopter then landed on the Field of Dreams and they took him to Vanderbilt

Yikes! God speed to Coach Plummer and to his family.

  7. ucsoccer -- I would agree with everything you say about OR.

    A few additional comments:

OR has absolutely no reason to be overconfident since they've already lost to Sullivan South this year. Also, who knows how serious the injury to Diego is? As a senior, he'd drag himself on to the field. Will he be as effective as usual? The game is at Sullivan, so based on that and the above, I'd say Sullivan is the favorite. Anyone disagree?

  8. How does a bigger feild help a team who plays as individuals? they won't be able to build attacks if the OR D shows up to play. OR plays a much better team game and has the speed to keep up with West. Sorry but OR has the advantage on this game. Plus i've never watched a team watch the ball get taken and give up so easily.

West lasyiness hurts them on such a big feild..... they didn't even want to move on a tiny farragut feild and they will get ate up on a bigger feild..... i promise.... unless they play a COMPLETELY different game then they did against farragut, this feild advantage goes to a team not individuals......

UC -- interesting observations. You seem to know what you're talking about.

I was thinking the big field would give the highly skilled West players more space to operate.

Your point on the other topic was, I think, that West lacks fitness, if I'm not mistaken.

That's also an interesting observation. Plausible, I think.

We'll see who's right pretty soon.

  9. I thought Maryville going back to a Flat Four killed them this game. They beat Bearden and stood toe to toe with Farragut playing with a sweeper and appeared much more comfortable. Bad tactical mistake by Maryville Coaches in my opinion. Also, unfortunate that Maryville Goalie let a 30 yard Free Kick sneak over his head untouched for a Goal.

Diego from Oak Ridge did play very well and they moved him around the field to find him open space.

I want to second the notion that Diego played a great game. Besides the two goals, he was seemingly everywhere. Coach Sheppard was quoted as saying, in effect, that he's very crafty. I would agree with that. He's always doing little things to help his team.

An unsung hero for Oak Ridge, in my opinion, is Jordan (I hope I have the first name right) Howell. This is Trenna Howell's brother, I think. He really stepped up in the back and played a strong game all night. He was particularly effective in the air.

Aside from these two, the whole O.R. squad played with passion and intelligence.

Maryville has a very, very nice team. A pleasure to watch. They actually controlled action for long stretches, but their attacks were often foiled by very tenacious O.R. defense. I believe O.R. had Mr. Ridge (#7) marked out. Speaking of #7, he's quite an athlete. I suspect Coach Quarles would be very happy to have him on the football team as a defensive back or a running back. I believe #10 who's obviously a key player, was slightly hurt in the second half, which didn't help Maryville's cause.

I don't know the distribution of classes on the Maryville's squad, but if they don't lose many seniors they will certainly be a force next year as well.

  10. Out of all the Players at Farragut I would say one of the most classiest is J Muth. He is a warrior on the field and I am sure his thought process was , he didn't want to lose the game, so it was something he only had a second to think about, so I find the digs at him WAY OUT OF LINE. Let's say Ridge did score, Farragut came back and scored again in the overtime also, so it would have still been tied. I don't think Farragut or Bearden take anything for granted but one of them finds a way to win 6 out of the last 7 State Championships, so they understand winning. That is why I think they went for the win on Sat. Winners are always winners and dodge noone. Farragut will struggle without Muth for a short peiod before they fall into place and still win. Maryville and OR, I am still going to take Maryville in this one.

Sorry to beat this old horse some more, but I would call this foul tactically smart, but not strategically the best thing to do.

I don't Mr. Muth, but from the posts he must be Farragut's best or nearly best defender. Assuming your objective is the State championship, then Mr. Muth's foul was committed in what amounts to a pool game. He is not available for the next game, which is a knockout game. It would be much better to have your best defender for the knockout game.

Would have been better not to foul in this situation, in my opinion. Of course, I have the benefit of time. Mr. Muth had a second or two to make his decision.

Incidentally, I wonder why soccer doesn't adopt something like other sports (like rugby) where if a foul is committed that prevents what is almost certainly a score, then the referee can award a "penalty" score (in rugby, a try). The soccer equivalent would be a PK, regardless of the spot of the foul.

Best of luck to all regional semi-finalists. I hope you all are in top form, and may the best teams win.

  11. Wow. This is really surprising to me. Once again, it shows that any team can be beaten on any given night. Did the rain affect Tanner's throw ins?

Congrats to Oak Ridge. Coming together like you did at playoffs is a great thing to happen to a team (unless you are playing against them!)

Boy, a Farragut vs. West game would be interesting, and also sad in the same way. I think when they both are on, they are two of the best teams in the state. But, Farragut has to get through Maryville first!

#11 (Tanner) had a brilliant throw to #10 (don't know name), about 35 yards, and #10 headed it past the OR keeper. This was relatively early in the 2nd half. One correction to an earlier post: The score was 2-1 when the first lightning delay occurred; OR had just scored off of a volley from a free kick.

  12. what about alcoa, pigeon forge, and carter

I think they can contend with CAK and catholic

I hope you're right. It would make things more interesting for us fans.

Best of luck to Alcoa, Pigeon Forge, and Carter (and Catholic and CAK, too).

  13. SRFC went 0-2-1 at the Carmel Tournament.

Lost 3-2 to North London Supernova, CAN

Lost 1-0 to Edmond '91 Black, OK

Won 2-1 vs Calgary Foothills Colts, CAN

ERSA went 1-1-1 at the same tournament

Tied 1-1 with Iowa '91 ODP

Lost 3-0 to Cincinnati United Premier Red, OS

    Won 1-0 vs D'feeters '91, TX

For SRFC, wouldn't that be 1-2-0? One win, two losses, no ties?

By the way, ESC Black finished #2 in Region III last year. A very, very strong team which won all three of its games in this tourney.

  14. Catholic looks very good in A/AA, should make a strong run for the gold, but never count out CAK.

In AAA, you'd have to say Farragut and West will be there, with Bearden still in search of the right chemistry, apparently.

No serious contender in Division II, unfortunately.

  15. I saw on the TNSOCCER.ORG website that the State Cup, which for the last several years has been played at Mike Rose in Memphis, is moving this year to Moss-Wright Park in Goodlettsville. While I certainly like the move to a more central part of the state, why Moss-Wright?

I personally don't know much about the park. Are the fields good? Is there a championship-type field?

I had hoped that the tournament would have been move to Siegel Park in Murfreesboro, but it isn't.

    Any comments or thoughts?

Fields at Moss Park are pretty good, level, though many are less than full size. North of Nashville.

They cannot be any worse than the fields have become at Mike Rose, unfortunately.

It's too bad that games cannot be played at Siegel, really now the best complex in the State.

Fields at Rotary are probably better than Moss, too.

Anything's better than having to drive to Memphis for us mid and east TN'ers.
