  1. Ruse ... do these kids have a choice in going to Fulton or West ??? What did ya mean by that ???? Why would a kid opt away from a power like Fulton to go to West ???? If you bring up Wagner and Carlos Campbell then those kids wore the welcome out at Fulton and couldnt go back there ....

    Hey Tadvols.

Long time. IMO, there are a number of kids in the Mechanicsville area that have gone to Bearden Middle, and that were zoned West, that wound up at Fulton. Fulton seems to have lost a little ground in the feeder programs to the Bearden, AE, and more recently (3-5 yrs.) West. Just my perception, but going back kids like Antonio Hamilton (Bearden Middle) played Baby Falcons, and went on up. The same just does not seem to be true today. Wagner was a bad example, and he certainly did wear out his welcome. Can't believe Coatney let back after he pulled that stunt right before the Alcoa game when they had Warren, Sykes, Sommer, Lanxter, White, Fiegler...and I don't think Cobb could get on the field. Had to toss Jock Stinson out there as a Frosh. Be good. Tell Road2Three, 4MySister, etc., hello.

  2. West's D-1 prospects are made up of Austin Sowell, Preston Williams, Brad Reid, Tanner Tompson, Charlie Kolinsky, and possible steven Gybeson.

    Rebelfan06.

Not so sure about all of them. Kolinsky has a good motor, and a lot of experience, but he is not a D1 prospect. His cousin, Keenan was at CAK, but signed with Vandy for baseball. Tanner Thompson could be a prospect, @ kicker, but not LB. Reid would need to grow quite a bit to be considered for a D1 spot on the OL/DL, and or get lot faster in order to be looked at as a DE/LB. Sowell is a nice player. D1, probably at a non BCS school. SoCon, MAC, OVC, etc.

As a team, West will have plenty of talent, probably get more on down the road too. Kids opting away from Fulton to West will help. Still, the vast majority of it will not be D1 talent. Also, West has had good talen in previous years. Both Childs, Jake Ryan, Kenny Esterly, Jack Wagner, Alan Whaley, Klotzbach, Saderfer, Cortez Drew, etc., and they still had trouble getting in the playoffs. Their district is loaded with good teams. I do think that West gets better as th year goes on, and they could upset some folks later in the year. They play both Bearden & Catholic in weeks 9, 10.

  3. No offense to either team but I still think the athletic curve is a lot larger for teams like Knox Catholic and Mitchell. They may end up doing great in the end but it is going to be a lot tougher.

I'll take the Top 22 from either Mitchell & Catholic & do well vs. most. Not enough depth with their enrollments. In Mitchell's case, they will need to come out of the gate faster than they did last year. They should with what they have back. Malone, Scruggs, Jenkins, Cole (who might be the best player in 2012). Catholic is basically playing in the equivilent of a 6A region with Farragut, Bearden, Maryville, Willam Blount. They also play Austin East, Webb, & Rhea Co. in non-district games. That said, while they both may be good 5A teams, they could both miss the playoffs.

    ruse?

  4. So true!!!! If a team is ranked number 10 in the state they are only in the Top 20% of their classification. Having six classifications with +/- 50 teams in each division has done nothing more than weaken the competition even more. Each division should have a minimum of 100 teams & even then if you are ranked #10 in the state you are only in the top 10% of the teams in your division.

More teams in the playoffs = more $.

  5. Centennial? For real? Just want to remind you, Centennial has never beaten Franklin...EVER. Might want some kinda experience to be top 10 in state, they arent even top 3 or 4 in the region

    rebel4life94.

Why not? Its' May, new classifications, districts, and my opinion generally speaking, is not worth much. Dude, its' a message board in which a poster was looking for a "Early 5A Top 10." Hit us up with your thoughts, "Franklin, #1, Franklin #1, Franklin #1."

I think Cleveland will be very interesting this year. I believe that it could go two way, they do very good or they're mediocre. Cleveland returns four senior offensive linemen, several skill backs, and three defensive linemen. The inexperience part of Cleveland will more than likely be the linebackers. With a new coach at the helm I think Cleveland may actually live up to their hype, which is something they have not done in a while!

    Rumbling.

IMO, The OL & skill guys will be good. New coach will create some excitement/passion, which has been missing. DL will be strong, & keep the LBs free. Really think they could be tough. Very sorry to hear about Coach Monroe's loss.

    ruse?

    Alcoa would usually be in the top 10 if they played 5A. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

Alcoa would be Top 5. Loaded.

  7. Forgive the football ignorance since I'm a basketball guy but can you give us a little better background on Meadows? All I know of was the success at Alcoa, short move to Jeff Co., WB, then leave of absence.

Alcoas Painted Bridge obviously has a little different view of Meadows.

I agree with ScottA11 our line should be able to hang with anybody. We've gone head to head with Halls, Powell and Bearden in scrimmages in addition to facing some of the state's best in Fulton, AE, Webb, Baylor ,etc.

Can you and Ruse enlighten us about Meadows both positive and negative?

    IrishBBall.

As you can tell, Meadows is, or has been at any rate, a polarizing figure. From an "Xs & Os" standpoint he understands the game. He can teach it. Takes tough positions on things, and will make a stand. When he first went to WB, he did that at the expense of alienating himself from the fan base. If I recall, he had his team play from the visiting team's side during home games to lessen the imapct of the boo birds.

There was an article a few years ago in the KNS about parents being intrusive. His relationship with parents/fans was a focal point of the article. If there are parents at Catholic that don't like the call or the play or playing time or whatever, they will nott get sympathy. That is good. Don't know about the whole loyalty thing. I hear a lot, but I don't know for sure. 3 sides to a lot of those things. He is charasmatic. He is political. He is a risk taker.

He has knowledge of the teams Catholic will play. Be interesting to see what O/D he runs. If he runs a Tony Franklin spread, Catholic will not be successful. They don't have enough athletes, or oline with pass blocking skills for it. They won with ball control, and limiting the opposition's offensive snaps. They will win games 42-38, and probably lose the same amount 42-38. If they run a conservative (does not have to be the WingT) O, they should increase their chances. On D, they struggle just based on #s. They will have to play more kids both ways than most if not all of their opposition. That will show in about week 5 and beyond, and in the 4th Q. As always, BBall, just my opinion.

  8. I agree that Alcoa won a lot before Rankin got there but here is one thing a lot of Alcoa fans overlook. Alcoa is a lot more disciplined since Rankin showed up.

    Hey Reb.

Care to remind me of who the Alcoa coach was prior to Rankin; you know, the one that created the need for " a lot more discipline." ? Thanks.

    ruse?

  9. i know he left alcoa because his step-son died of leukemia in 2001 and his wife wanted to move to jefferson co where she has family. after a couple of years the family wanted to move back to maryville, where she is from, he has been at blount since then. i know he has had about 3 chances to leave there and hasnt left yet. the move from sequoyah to alcoa was gimme, who wouldnt have done that?

    ngavol25

So who will Meadows be filling out his staff with?

    ruse?

  10. Here is my take, not that it matters

Meadows- Has to many issues and takes a leave every other year.

Rankin- Has the best set of Athletes he has ever had coming to him this year.

Monroe-Why would he. Ooltewah is the kind of school he is used to.

Besides-----"What ever happened to Benny Monroe" (inside joke)

    Hey Leonard.

IMO, Meadows did a nice job @ William Blount. Rankin has Alcoa loaded, and they will roll to a Gold Ball, and I was just using old Benny as an example of a guy that manages his business, and has earned the right to select his staff. Too bad about the Sams boy.

    ruse?

  11. Now I think it will be Coach Rankin. He has been spotted twice at Catholic. If they don't offer it to him then they are crazy. If not him, I would go with Coach Meadows. I only know of a handful of interviews, there could be some sleepers I am unaware of.

    HappyHour22

Won't be Rankin. With names like Corrum, Gray, and Tate being mentioned as candidates in some capacity by Catholic posters, it indicates to me that these are guys that come with the deal. Guys like Rankin, Quarels, Monore, etc., have been successful because they hire those whom they feel are best qualified. So while I'm sure the $ (TN reitrement + position salary + boosters), talent, facilities, feeder program, exposure, were more than Alcoa, Rankin is not going to be told whom to hire. Another example of the political nonsense you wrote of earlier HappyHour22.

    ruse?

  12. Yes he did coach at Heritage a few years back. He was an assistant on the Catholic staff this past year.

So if Corrum is the guy, this would be in keeping with ND/Irish tradition. Replacing Dan Devine, who wins a National Championship with Jerry Faust, a high school coach. I ain't buying it. Corrum got blasted out of Heritage. Only won a couple of games in the years he was there.

    ruse?

  13. Yes. They are still interviewing and several "nameless" coaches have toured the facilities.

HH22 is correct in that very little is being said and they are keeping info very close to the vest. Not many open doors. As a hint I will say that cars have been observed at the complex with Blount Co. tags

    Hey BBall.

Not picking, but I just could not tell from your response if that was the Lane Corrum from Heritage that replaced Tommy Rewis somewhere in 2005 or 06. I think he coached at South Doyle after that, if that helps. Thanks.

    ruse?

  14. I have spoke with a person in the administration and they were not talking too much about it. Obviously there are some good canidates for the job and then there are some people who just throw there name in the hat for the heck of it ( troy fleming, andre lott, vic wharton) well atleast thats what I heard. I still think they are going to hire Coach Lane Corrum. He runs a version of the veer and he will bring back Scott Tate (O-Line coach) if he gets the job.

    HappyHour22.

Is that the same Lane Corrum that replaced Tommy Rewis @ Heritage a few years back?

    ruse?

  15. I'm with you ruse?........not heard anything since heading to UT Martin?

Also would like to know how Dustin Lindsey is doing in GA?

Heard he did well this past season @ West GA. The Wolves had a tough year, but will get back on track. I would venture a guess that Lindsey would have liked West GA over Coffeeville. I had also heard Hicks started down the West GA. path but that it did'nt work out. Heard from an old coach last night, asked him about Brian. Said he heard that he was only there a couple of weeks, and he thought that he was out of football. Shame, if true.

    ruse?

  16. Just saw it. Impressive if you can get past the whole Notre Dame feel! /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> They were DII 3 or 4 years ago and moved to 3A. Now with whole new classification system, since they are a private school playing a public schedule, you multiply their enrollment numbers (~625) by a factor of 1.8 and thus they have to play at 5A level. Still not fair in my eyes since they are a private school and we all know that privates play by a different set of rules i.e. recruiting. But, you are correct, they will be a force!

Oh Catholic recruits. No financial aid, but they recruit relative to the term "recruit." Recruit = Marketing. Same thing Fulton, Ausitn East, Alcoa, Maryville do. Fulton, and more recently, AE have done a good job. Anderson Co. has also done well in this area over the last few years. See the downturn at Central, Powell, Halls? Alcoa/Mville, and the Open Zone have helped for a long time. Catholic like Maryville has built a very, very strong feeder program, and have some good talent. Being partial to Fulton, I have no love for them, but do respect them. They are as physical as anyone Fulton has played over the last four years. MoWest got drilled by them the last few if I recall. They will struggle this year because they have no coach/staff, play a 6A schedule, have no depth compared to the teams they play, and, well just because I don't like them. Knox West is pretty tough. They usually don't play well until later in the year. Early game should give the edge.

    ruse?

  17. Yep....remember it well. `2005. Mark Packer was announcing the game for CSS. I was sitting in the stands right below him. Before the game, he was really talking up the defending 3A states champs. I was thinking....wow, Alcoa does not have a chance after listen to his game "break down". BUT.......Fulton's line could not slow Warren and Sykes at all. Freshman Jock Stinett had Brandon in his face all night. Dennis Rogan could not even get out of the back field. I loved it. 48-6.....what a butt kicking.

The following year `2006 was to this day one of the best games I have watched. Dennis Rogan put that team on his back and was not going to be stopped in the third and fourth quarter. Close game, but a 24-21 win for Fulton. That was a great State Championship Falcon team.

Yup, little screen pass right before the end of the 1st 1/2 to Rogan set the tone for the rest of it. Have to say that Dennis Freeny was the difference that night though. Laid a couple of NASTY hits on Lanxter, and a good punt return. Really thought Alcoa was going to roll early when Sykes got off fast with a couple of sacks. Cleveland?

    ruse?

  18. They'll have plenty of traction when Alcoa turns Fulton's field into a track meet this season! /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

    BC.

Thanks. I'm sure they will. Probably won't be like either of the last two. Somewhere in between with Alcoa on top, but then again Falcons at home, and the whole Thursday Night Game could help the Birds. Nevermind, I think the last televised night game at Bob Black between these two was the 06 thumping.Sykes, Martin, Hicks, Lanxter, Lindsey, etc. Cleveland?
