  1. Was that a one time thing or do they do it each year they play in Knoxville? It seems like I remember temp. play clocks set up at each end of the field. They can come use ETSU football facilities anytime. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
  2. I watched Byrnes play the FLA HS team on ESPN(?) last year. Both teams had several players going D-1. Of course that was why they were on TV. ESPN did a great job of promoting the small town Byrnes is in (Duncan). They showed all around the stadium including their jumbotron (bought with donations) and they were building a multimillion $ field house. Not bad for a community that appeared to be the size of Blountville. I agree, Byrnes may be too much, but if DB doesnt want to play up lets just stick to playing the schedule we have. DB might get a taste of how these small schools feel when they come to J Fred. I agree Maryville would be good too, but I think they like the scrimmage to much as a measuring stick. IF DB truely wants to walk the walk and just not talk it based on the past 100 years, play the big boys. In state or out.
  3. "don't believe me", why would I not??? Did DB have a QB get injured in the SC game? Skunk will know, he knows all. And who was the college team that practiced on the field? Maybe Georgia needs to for the Vols to have a chance.
  4. The smart DB fan would, but not too many smart ones when it comes to pulling for SH. Kind of like pulling for Fla.! Or is it South Carolina now? HMMM, what is common about all 3? Or maybe the DB fans are already trying to guess who they would match up in the playoffs. Go Toppers, it will make Nov. 2nd game even bigger with more popcorn sales! Congratulations to your band on the competiton at DB this past weekend.
  5. If a bear doesn't get you, the field can. The crown on your field is nightmare for the throwing QB. Always a home field advantage. Dont forget, #7 played the entire game as QB 2 years ago on this field as the number 3 QB when 1 & 2 were hurt. It was a big game, evenly matched, maybe even SC favored. Didn't a college team use the field for practice prior to a UT game a few years back? Was it Fla. because of hurricane forced them to leave early? Now we are back on the thread.
  6. If DB wants to get more scholarships for the boys, they need to see how they stack up outside the area. Typically DB faired OK in 7 on 7 (not this year) at Byrnes. The MBA trip several years ago was very motivating for that team. They knew they were in for a battle and new the compettiton was at a different level. They dont have to go out of state every year, but a change of competition would serve the team well. A dose of humility can inspire a group to work harder during the off season. IMO, going 10-0, 9-1, every season has led to complaisance in the off season for DB. It will be interesting to see 2 things this next year 1). Will spring practice be in Jan.? 2). Will summer work outs be at 6:30 AM? I dont think either worked well for DB.
  7. DB played high schools in Fla. before there were such things as interstates or the reg. airport, just train.
  8. Evaluate this...Cyclone 2nd and 3rd teams outscored DB's Friday night and they did again last night. JV lost 20-18. Didnt see the game but I'm guessing it was similar to what has been said about all prior JV games. The Cyclone coach figured out who was going to run the ball %75 of the time and keyed on him. Lynn Garden Pee Wee coaching at its best. Not bad for an old guy just sitting in the stands watching some of the worst coaching since the time they had a DB "glory day" QB coaching DB football. (He does radio now) Sorry, seen you Dads hanging out at practices for 20+ years. I can evaluate just fine on Friday nights. #47 plays good for a Soph. but not as a starter for a 5-A school. He is either %100 or %0 depending on a lucky blitz. Rotate #9, #45 etc. into his spot. They can do the same on the blitz, plus hold their own when needed. Lord dont take the biggest LB (#18) out on short down situations. The OR runningback is sending the DB game film to colleges, especially when he ran to his left. #10 is one of the best athletes on the field, IF not the best. Needs more consistant QB playing time, not the QB shuffle in the middle of downs. For him to be really good, he needs a consistent offensive scheme to practice. The option from under center was not the game for the first 3 games. Not much of an option from shotgun. #7 will be fine now that they have an offensive scheme that fits the athletes on the field. Next year will be better, much better, just look at the young guys (JRs) now getting the playing time and there should be even more JRs. on the field. Not too sure about your assesment of the younger classes, 2-2 JV and the Freshman horse has left the barn for greener pastures!
  9. Before DB travels 5 hours they should look outside of the state, NC, SC or GA. Both NC and SC could provide plenty of competition within a 3 hour drive that would be easier on the fans and the wallet. With CSS and ESPN now covering a lot of HS football there could be a chance for some coverage if they had right match up.
  10. I am, I said I thought they would hang on to beat Science Hill. July I didn't think they could. I'm optimistic it is going to rain, but I'm still going to water.
  11. Because they know they will be part of the "100 strong" on the bench. Every DB fan knows once GC has his mind made up there is little chance of another kid ever getting much playing time. ( I know he brought up CS, wow, one out the hundreds that have never received playing time.) No matter how many dropped passes, fumbles, missed tackles, cramps,if you are a "chosen one" your spot is secure and nobody will get a chance. Lets face it, a rule of "no hitting the first team" during practice doesnt give the other guys much of a chance to prove anything. Especially if they dont ever get into a game. When do they hit, spring practice? These guys leaving for other schools know they can play elsewhere, do good and have fun. Others are still at DB, just playing a sport where there isn't 100 dressed out. To be fair, football isnt the only sport where kids are leaving.
  12. Muffed punt returns have been a DB tradition. Just ask Skunky, he will recall a few. I'm sure they have told all of the guys to stay away, sometimes it is hard to coach smarts into a player. Did you not see Coach B chew him for trying to pick up a rolling punt? Of course they left him in. Any other kid, out of the game. He has a long way to go to be a good QB next year. GREAT talent, but a good QB has to have it between the ears to make good decisions. Cant make the read for the option, does his best when he keeps it and runs. Everybody is all excited about the playoffs after beating a terrible Cyclone team with no offense. The defense is good, not great. A good running team will eat the right side up. If not for Bateman holding down the side at DE it would be off to the races. #24 is a good playmaker on offense, but DB he aint! He looked silly trying to grab the jersey Friday night, kind of like UT. That was not his first time trying to tackle like that. #47 is too little and too weak. He makes tackles because of blitzing, never filling the hole like a LB. Always knocked into Hawkins county when the run is directly at him. Holt needs to let the neighbor lovefest with him go before it costs DB a game. GC still had 5-6 starters in on D in the 4th. That will bite him one day. The stuff about JS having a sore ankle, hogwash. That is just how he runs, side to side, never head on. Amazing, totally amazing what under center does with rotating backs coming in, JL and CS for a couple of plays then LT and JS with fresh legs. It will serve them well on D to have a rest too. #7 just doesnt have the comfort to run a shotgun every play. Now that DB has the line huddle, just add a few backs and they would have a complete huddle. No confusion of the play and faster. 2nd and 3rd team running plays in got plays off faster. That has hurt them already this year and will again. After the TN H game someone talked about how good the kicking game is for DB.??? The kicker is getting stronger now that they are scoring and he has a chance to kick off, but that is the only sign of improvment. The extra points stink. The hold looks bad and the kick just clears the crossbar. Never seen so many blocked extra points half way into a season. Although DB scored on the 4th down, that would have been a good chance for the kicker to practice a field goal during a game. DB will need that later this season. Best part of the kicking Friday night was DB didnt have to punt. The prior game was 5 punts for an ave. of 16 yards. That too has hurt in the past and will again. A running back that finally runs head on is not enough to save this team. Too many weak areas that will end the season early. Too many turnovers. IF they do well in the 2nd season it will only be because the entire state is down. Teams of yester year would have killed this team including Science Hill teams (HA!). Sorry, 14-0 at halftime is not impressive. DB wins the next 3 against weak teams and hangs on to beat Science Hill.
  13. GC knows the TSSAA rules, besides you think this is the first time there is an age issue. PS they have always had a couple of "oldies" on the team and this year is no different. Everybody thinks Gate City originated it but you need to look at the early DB teams before they had a TSSAA.
  14. If you want to see some poor officiating venture across the state line. And I'm not talking about for a cigarette run!
  15. If Justin is not %100 then why play him tonight??? Hey GC, "100 strong"? Go to the bench and play other 100 kids. If DB has any dreams of success in the playoffs they will need every starter %100. Will GC stay under center or go back to the shot gun to prove to K-town he knows what he is doing and is right? Stick to under center, play 45 at fullback, run 3 fresh tailbacks LT, RH, and CS (let JS recover). Occasional run the shotgun to keep Betsy thinking. On D keep bringing in fresh legs from the 100 and this will be a game like old times. The only question will be which car tonight will be the most expensive ride in HC. Run the shotgun the entire game and it could stay close if DB makes mistakes. Betsy, no peeking at the HC court!
  16. Thats because DB won. And it will not get any better for 2 more weeks. Win this Friday and off next. Give it 5 weeks when DB plays JC and the first round playoff game has arrived. Stay tuned.
  17. Not a very good showing?? When has 30 been in this season to see him run? I disagree on it being against 3rd D. Maybe some 2nd D mixed in with their 1st, but he was running behind our 2nd O. #30 deserved a chance before bringing up a fresh based just on fresh. games. #30's dad needs to sit under the old shade tree at practice like they have for years. Or maybe he has to work.
  18. For years DB would run a pass play with 3 receivers loaded on one side. 2 would take a step forward, the third back a step to catch the pass. It would become 2 on 3 blocking with the receiver having more a one on one. Its a dangerous pass if the D reads the play, but it would get JS outside to do his thing. They need to get him a pass out in the flat. He is at his best when making tacklers miss, not running off tackle. The soph class is certainly big (LBS), but very weak. For their size, they have not shown they can handle the line of scrimmage.
  19. Yeah and we all are rallying around Fulmer too after an impressive win. They got better because they changed offensive schemes and played an easier team. It shouldnt take until the 5th game to figure out ditch running the shotgun every down and play more players. CS is an impressive runner, but his style is what was lacking for the offense. Taylor can run at em if given that style of offense with Lawson in front. #30 Wagner should get more chances WITH the first team offensive line. Playing the other guys is not finding a needle in a haystack. There have been a number of guys with equal talent that could rest some starters. Number 9 is an example. I honestly believe the record would be different if some other boys had been subbing and resting the guys going both ways. Dont bet the ranch GC will play many more kids if he gets up on the Cyclones. History shows its just not his style and never will be. He will shuffle some in the last few minutes but not until then. Enjoy HC because there are no more give me's.
  20. Yep, and if they beat another 2-2 team this Friday night they could be in the state top 10. A real powerhouse until playoffs.
  21. That aint water in that there tank legal boy so dont go shootin yer deer rifle at it!
  22. My only day free is Sunday and they are not open on Sunday. Besides, if GC were to take his non-stubborn pills and be willing to change, the line would be longer than the womens bathroom line at Neyland. I'll hang up and listen to your call.
  23. Get under center, let Kilgore and Lawson take turns at FB with Hogg, Sylvester and Taylor at TB. That solves the bad snaps, the cramping and the tiredness. Then go to the 100+ bench when the others are missing tackles, blocks and dropped passes. Get the cross country kid that runs by practice and goofs off punting the ball a mile to punt for the team. Typically GC has let all the SRs get a little PT on SR night. It will interesting to see if it happens this year. I said all along the 2nd team would do good to get in a game. I wonder if they will do Spring practice in January again this year to get a head start??? /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
  24. I'm not alone on keeping traditions such as the walk, but the indivivual players breaking line to run out in front of the rest of the players IS NOT a tradition. The "look at me" tradition just started the past several years. Both starters and non starters are now doing it. At some point when all 100 are doing it they will have to start at the other end of the field to have enough time. I can see it now, players changing the way they run through the "T". Maybe a dance? Perhaps Chief Osceola needs to ride in on a motorcycle. Dont start on the energy in the stands, at least the football fans are staying for the entire game and not leaving after the halftime show.
