  1. Thanks for chiming in Mag. F. I was taking em all on by myself for a little while. I bet you and I have crossed paths in the TTA hallways by the way.

Probably...I've only given hints on this board, but with a little digging and a little smarts a Temple person could probably identify me. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

I'm a realist, as I think you are too. We know Temple is not perfect, and we want our leadership to do what is right. When wrong, correct it. Make it right. Playing by the rules is the christian thing to do. Admitting when you are wrong and paying the penality is also the christian thing to do.

    Even non-christians know this. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  2. just curious... how could it have been reported in a better light?

A reporter who doesn't have a kid attending a rival school reporting the story would have eliminated any question of bias or conflict of interest. Hargis could be seen as using the paper as his personal bully pulpit. There is a difference between reporting (an article) and writing opinion (an editorial).

Temple only has themselves to blame for the position they are in. Time to take the lashes and get back to football. You can't claim the moral high ground after you've been caught. Temple should write a nice letter to the sports department admitting they broke some TSSAA rules, say they're going to be extremely careful in the future to obey all rules, and they appreciate the paper holding them accountable. Any chance that will happen? /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

  3. The article in the paper had the word "listen" in there but it wasn't on the online version. Not sure what happened. I fixed it in my cut and paste

I agree about the don't like it then leave. Temple does have the right to to not like the way the TSSAA does things. I don't like everything they do and I agree that a broader based appeals board would be a good thing for all of us. Having a one sided radio "forum", not getting facts correct and whining was ill advised. Now any sympathy they may have gotten from other schools is greatly diluted.

Yeah, I noticed it in the online version. Good to know the print version was correct. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

I wonder if any sympathy Temple gets from other school come from schools wanting a weakened TSSAA rules enforcement. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

  4. did temple really ask for the tennessee legislation to look into this?

It was suggested that maybe the state legislature should look into the power given to one individual (in this case, Ronnie Carter) in investigating, etc etc etc. I doubt it goes any further than a comment made on a local radio station broadcast.

  5. I've never liked the "if you don't like the rules, leave." argument, but overall the article is good in pointing out some discrepancies between the information presented by the panel and the newspaper.

Is there not a sports editor who proofs these articles though? "Earlier this week I to a local radio station..."??? listened? was invited?

But this is the issue in a nutshell: "The rule is very clear in each instance, and the kids were ineligible. Period. Pay your fine, make sure you follow the same rules the other 300-plus member schools do and move on."

Good advice, and I hope Temple follows it.

  6. I would expect to see an article soon based on what I have heard. The radio station may be able to furnish a transcript if you ask. It would be nice if they put a transcript on the TFP web site. I'll suggest that

I would advise Hargis to show caution in responding through the newspaper. That is his career. I understand it is tough to listen to people criticize you publically, but his responsibility is to report on sports not respond to personal attacks.

Someone needs to be the bigger man and drop the issue. We'll have to see who it is.

  7. It was the TSSAA's catasrophic insurance. Whether they had other insurance or not means nothing. Practicing Larson and the 2 CSAS kids in the Spring was a CLEAR violation of the practice rules

I wholly agree. I simply mentioned the insurance as something I hadn't heard brought up before. It doesn't excuse Temple's actions. I don't think Temple is denying the violations. I think they are saying they don't deserve the maximum penalty. I personally don't think anyone other than the Temple admin believe they got the maximum penalty. /wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

  8. I would expect to see an article soon based on what I have heard. The radio station may be able to furnish a transcript if you ask. It would be nice if they put a transcript on the TFP web site. I'll suggest that

They announced on the show you could get a copy of the the program on CD for $5 and it will be available (free) as streaming audio on the school website. I don't know when it will be posted (or if it has been post yet) on the school website, but the radio station's number is 423-493-4382 according to their website.

  9. why would ronnie carter think the kids were not insured if temple says they were insured?

I'm going on recollection here rather than try to find the articles, but I believe Ronnie Carter said the kids would not be insured under the TSSAA insurance. I'm not an insider on either the TSSAA or Temple so I don't know anything outside of what I've read in the paper or heard on the radio yesterday. I don't know if/when Temple informed Ronnie Carter of the insurance they referred to yesterday.

  10. I don't mean for this to sound abrasive, but what exactly was the point of this panel discussion and to whom were they trying to portray anything to by having this forum?

I guess to get out information that was not reported in the paper like the two 2007 spring practice kids being insured. In the paper it was stated if they had gotten hurt they were not covered.

But it's not really a "forum" if you don't have both sides present or at least take phone calls etc. I can understand the TSSAA and the paper not wanting to show up on someone's home radio station though. Perhaps they would have better luck getting together on a neutral station with a neutral moderator.

  11. I won't be able to listen. How about taking some notes and posting a summary. I would like to hear their side. Surely you don't think they would screen a call from "zonepirate". They should have invited me to be on with them.

    Must not be that deep /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I will try to listen and take notes...I really wish they would drop it though. I heard Judge Williams is supposed to be on and they were trying to get "someone" from the paper. LOL.

I doubt there will be any new information. From what I understand they will state:

    There was no recruiting.

Coach Chastain was 6 months late on his son's tuition.

Chastain's son snapped the ball and downed it in a couple games after they had been decided.

The punishment is extreme considering the negligible impact Chastain's son had on the games.

All this may be true, but rules are rules.

There are a couple things that I hope don't get said, but I won't mention them here. LOL.

  12. I attended TTA back in the early 90's and it seemed to me back then we always made the article title when we lost, but rarely when we won. This was probably more my bias than any of Stephen Hargis though. Maybe he is out to get Temple. Who knows? Bottomline, if you don't break the rules, you don't have to worry about it.

  13. Tune in to 89.7 Tuesday at 5:00pm if you want to hear Temple's side of things. The pastor, principal, athletic director, and possibly someone from TSSAA will be discussing the situation. I don't think they're crazy enough to take calls, but I hope they will. (I better warn them to screen all SPitt callers.) /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

And if you are outside the area or away from the radio but have internet access you can listen at www.wdyn.com

IMO, Temple should drop the issue, pay the fine and move on. If they had done nothing wrong I could see continuing to stir the pot, but that is not the case here. It doesn't matter if the guy caught the winning touchdown or downed the ball. If he was ineligible they forfeit the game. It's tough, but like everyone has said here other than the $4k fine, there is no real punishment.

    Are this booster's pockets deep enough to build a football field? /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

  14. Like I said- Temple has not produced an SEC player....

Good teams- maybe- not great- not region and freakin district titles every year untill the "McCallie skogens" came...weren't all the skogens' up for mr. basketball and then mr. football this past year???

Jimmy did go to Temple High though. I don't know what year he transferred to LFO, but I know he went to Temple High. So your statement about no one from Temple High playing for an SEC team is incorrect. If McMasters transferred to a prep school for his senior year (or a post-senior year) would you still say Grace had a player go play in the SEC?

Temple's teams in the early 90's may have been only good, but playing against Grace made them at least look great.

When's the last year Temple had a losing record in basketball? or even failed to win 20 games? (not counting any they may have to forfeit from last year...lol).

  15. What high school did he graduate from???? Thank you- I'll sign autographs later this afternoon..

    LFO = Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.

Another interesting point to consider: didn't Temple go to the basketball state tournament in just their second year in TSSAA? I believe they played Austin East. They didn't win, but it goes to show Temple's basketball has been good for a long time.

  16. NO ONE FROM TEMPLE HIGH SCHOOL EVER PLAYED SEC ANYTHING!!!--that is bull....

Jimmy Costner did. His dad taught at TTU. He went to Temple before transferring to LFO in senior high.

But this probably happened before you were born because it would have been early 90's.

  17. Old Pirate says it would be terrible if the death penalty is enforced. I think inside most all would hate to see the school's athletic program shut down. The kids would be the ones to loose the most. We all should agree that athletics can be a major part of a kids life. Old Pirate hopes that TT fans will "remember" IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT WINNING AND LOSING, BUT HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME. GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP SHOULD BE A TOP PRIORITY. Yes..... this means abiding by the rules making for honest fair play. Old Pirate as well as just about everyone who has NOT been under a rock KNOW.... TT is not alone in this type of activity. Good Luck to TT, hopefully the death penalty is not the path the TSSAA chooses.

I agree OP. I hope the TSSAA sees it that way too. I think a year or two post-season ban plus fines should be sufficient punishment.
