It's not just in Maryville that this is happening.

You are so correct!  It’s really 99.9% of academia want to change to way that education is not only taught but the way it is viewed.  The pendulum has definitely swung as far to the left as possible and eventually will swing to the right much too far.  I have always  said that politics and one’s personal religious views need to stay out of education,  but for the last 40 years education has been running full throttle to what we have today.  If the social experiment that we are currently experiencing continues it is only a matter of time before the public school system in the USA completely collapses and all kids attend private schools or even worse don’t go to school.

The lawsuit requests a jury trial. Sable Winfree has extremely competent legal representation. FYI - her lawyer represented the Warren County school system for years, and I believe he knows what constitutes a reasonable lawsuit.

Absolutely the plaintiff wants a jury trial.  Again, this case will be settled out of court and will never go to trial. The compensation will be sealed and the public will not know the compensation amount.

No reasonable lawyer would take up this case. I am not a lawyer, but I know school law in and out.  Similar situations just like this play out thousands of times each year across the country, even at the college level (i.e. Ole Miss)  The Plaintiff's never win...ever.  If I am wrong, please provide a legal precedent for me. I will be waiting.

If a family has enough money and influence they can get a good attorney to take on the case.  If you think for one minute that attorneys and judges cant be influenced by money you are not in touch with the real world.

  4. Why the satellite weigh-ins?  I was told last year by a very high ranking TNUSA board member that because it was a qualifier for the national duals team along with finger pointing and strong rumors with regards to kids not actually making scratch weight all 2024 weigh-ins would be on site.

It appears as if silence tells the entire story!

Playing high school sports is a privilege not a right.  The college did not have to rescind the scholarship.  Scholarship offers are pulled all the time for a number of reasons. That was 100% their choice.  A coach can keep, cut, or dismiss any player that they want to without reason anytime they want.  Is that the right way to run a program?? I don't think that it is, but these are the facts of the matter. This case has absolutely 0% chance of going in the plaintiff's favor. Futhermore, I'd imagine that these administrators and the coach are a part of some teaching or coaching organization that will cover at least 1 million dollars each in legal fees. Obviously the kid and her family feel like there were "damages" thus the lawsuit.  Unfortunately, the law is not on their side in this case.

What you are saying is true about high school athletics being a privilege and not a right, but NO ONE ever knows what will happen if a case goes before a jury.  Again, I have been in a couple of jury rooms and it's always a little crazy.  That is why my prediction is you will see a settlement before the case goes to trial.

I don't like the situation from either side.  The player may have been wrongly kicked off the team but $750,000-kind of wronged?

It will be interesting to see if the Warren County School District allows this to go before a jury or they settle out of court before going to trial.  My guess is that this case never goes to trial.  If this goes before a jury, they could award even more than the $750K.  I was on a jury where they were asking for 185K and were awarded 1.2 million.  You never know what will happen in that jury room.

If she is that good college coaches would still be looking

That is absolutely not the truth.  Few if any college coaches or school administrators want to be in the middle of legal proceedings if there is any way possible to avoid being caught in the middle.  With that being said I have two questions:

    1.  Why would a coach remove any player from the team for using the F WORD?  Yes, I fully understand the player must be held accountable for her actions.  Maybe extra running and even a one game suspension but if every kid or coach that used improper language was kicked off the team or fired, they would have no players or coaches available to play the games.

    2.  If there was truly another player or coach that witnessed this situation, and they agree with the player then by all means the coach should be held accountable for their actions.

That I understand. Askey and Oakley are also graduate transfers. Once these Covid years are over this portal stuff might settle down. Right now App St and Campbell are top 25 teams in the Country. Be interesting to know how many kids never start at the school they transfer to. It’s really high in football

The “portal stuff” is only going to get wilder. The rich programs that are flush with money will buy the best athletes, pay those athletes and provide them with great workout partners from the RTC

Or you could go to a high profile program and get stuck in the depth chart and never start. Grass isn’t always greener

Many times, mat time, playing time are guaranteed if someone is brought into a program from the transfer portal.  Believe me when I say that deals are being cut every day.

I agree, this is an excellent opportunity for Little to get experience right off the get go.  That would be huge.

If Jarvis could get in the lineup early and have a good season he could enter the portal for a much more high-profile program.  It's all about having great workout partners.

Divisions do not matter all that much, in TN at least.  My son's school started off big school for his first three years and then moved to small school in his senior year. Did we wrestle anyone different in his senior year because we were small school? Nope.  Wrestled same public/private schools we always did. Absolutely no difference.  So in the end most schools are probably going to wrestle the same old schools that are within a sixty mile radius regardless of their or their opponent's division.   The better schools are already seeking out better competition so I don't think extra divisions matter there either.

I think you hit the nail on the head concerning population.  When TN adds another three or four million people our overall level will rise and not until then.

With three divisions it is currently too easy to medal in TN.  I know several young men who didn't practice at all in the off season (I mean zero) and medaled in big school and small school (no they weren't heavy weights or anything close to it).  That shouldn't be possible, or at least should be rare even if a really good athlete, which goes back to population. The larger we grow the more difficult a medal will become (in theory), regardless of athletic ability, unless we add a truly ridiculous amount of divisions like VA or GA.  This is the one thing California does right. One division, one set of medals per weight class.

18 medals per weight class in a state of 7 to 8 million people definitely seems overkill, especially when PA has two divisions and CA one division.  My son wouldn't have medaled under one division and that would have been just fine.  I'm clear with this information when family or acquaintances, who are sports enthusiasts, ask questions about that time of our lives.  I tell them we have three divisions and that if there had been one then it is most probable he wouldn't have medaled.  My son is aware of this as well, kids aren't idiots, they can survey the landscape. A lack of medals wouldn't change the gratitude I have towards this sport.

I truly appreciate your honesty and evaluation of your son’s abilities.  I have told so many people that if Tennessee had one division in wrestling , that we currently have kids winning state titles that would not even qualify for the state tournament.

Excellent view points.  Ultimately it comes down to an informed wrestler making their best decision considering their goals and aligning their goals with the options available and the goals of the recruiting coaches.

Question gentlemen... Has Tennessee wrestling improved with new divisions/classifications?

Wrestling has grown in Tennessee and the top wrestlers are much better.  However, I am not sure that anything other than population growth has attributed to wrestling being better.  Take a close look at how many good wrestlers have moved to Tennessee due to their parents taking one of the many new jobs this state has to offer.  My question is would the Tennessee wrestlers be more battle tested and therefore better if we did not currently have 3 divisions?

  14. The facts are very simple; when The State of Tennessee had collegiate wrestling programs at University of Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Middle Tennessee State University, Carson Newman, Sewanee and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga many Tennessee high school wrestlers filtered through those programs.  Almost all of those coaches would go from town to town having clinics for the local kids.  These clinics raised the technique level but it also allowed the coaches to recruit the kids at the clinics.  The end result was that many of those college wrestlers became high school coaches and most of the officials also competed on those teams.  I still say that both coaching and officiating was much better during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s due to so many guys wrestling for the local Tennessee colleges.

Be a nightmare for parking. Why would anyone gripe about MTSU?? Perfect venue. Got good parking. Great hotels, restaurants....etc...don't understand it.

The walk up crowd in Nashville would add between 25% and 50% to the attendance

  16. For a much better walk up crowd the tournament should be moved to Lipscomb University or Belmont University.  Personally I would look into moving the tournament to Municipal Auditorium in Nashville but you always get the “it’s too expensive to park” from some people.  It’s interesting that those same people couldn’t care less about paying to park when they show up to party in downtown Nashville on the weekends.

The Lipscomb Legacy folks wanted back in charge

The David Lipscomb "LIFERS" were put back in charge when Mrs. Candice McQueen was given the gavel by the folks at Hillsboro Church of Christ.  The problem arose when some of the lifers' kids and grandchildren either didn't get to play in football or did not play the position that they wanted.  What happened next is instead of handling everything internally like most other private institutions a few individuals began to talk in public.  The end result is that those individuals basically dropped a nuclear bomb on the David Lipscomb High School athletic program.  The sad part is that it punishes families and kids that actually had zero to do with breaking any rules.

Wow that Chittum Downey Match was really awesome in the championship

IMO, Ryder Downey did absolutely nothing from the top position other than riding. Yes, I completely understand there is riding time but the top man must be working for a fall.

That’s pretty narrow minded.  It’s not just about winning championships.  So much to be proud of for teams to be consistently successful year after year and having chances to compete on big stage.

As a coach you are paid to win championships. If you want to get paid to be in the playoffs (that’s really pretty easy in today’s times) you don’t want to work for me.

Wayne County is always good. No matter what sport they are playing in

This is not a true statement!  Yes, Wayne County has a pretty good mens and very good women’s basketball team this year but just how many state championships have they won in men’s basketball, baseball or football?  They have not been really strong in football since Rickey Rice left.  I am sorry but it’s about winning state championships and Wayne County has only ever won one state championship in a men’s sport and that was well over 20 years ago.

I feel like our catchers know how to call a game, but I also feel a cy young winner would be better :)  And thus, improving the catcher's knowledge of calling the game going forward in their journey.

At some point you need to cut the umbilical cord and teach in practice and allow the players to play the game.  I see the same thing at the D1 level with coaches wanting to control the whole game and not allowing the players to learn and play.

Chasing the talent. Antioch has a very good QB, maybe as good as anyone. Started as a 9th grader. Without him Antioch would have been winless. Talent alone is winning most games in Metro.

I have noticed that a high percentage of MNPS coaches just roll the ball out and win on talent.  If some of those athletes were actually coached correctly they would be dangerous.
