  1. O.S. is still the team to beat in Dist 4-A but Wartburg has games against O.S. and Oakdale this week so they will see how they stack up vs. the top two in the district. To beat O.S. at their place is a tough task. But Wartburg is an explosive offensive team at times and looks like a solid defensive team full or half court so they have a chance. It's important to understand that Oliver Springs is also an explosive team with a sound defense and possibly the best player in the last 25 years in 4-A so to pick against them at their place is hard, even for a bulldog fan. I think we may be a little bit deeper and certainly have Sr. leadership so it will be a great game and I'm looking forward to it.
  2. Colt is at Loudon? I get the point you are making. But you may have missed what I was saying we need a young man that may want to stay here and not up and leave. I'm worried that we will see our football program become a place where coaches come simply to gain a year of head coaching experience and then move on. It could kill our program. I suppose that all I'm saying is if we have a younger guy in here we could see the program stabalize for a while. Also I wasnt all that impressed with coach bangley I mean 0-10 is 0-10 any way you cut it. I think the way the board is going with the coaching pay increases is a major step in the right direction. You can t have it all.
  3. I think that we need a young coach similar to what has gone on with our basketball program both boys and girls. I feel like we're going to enjoy many good years out of those young guys. We have to date already seen many good things from Coach Layne and the girls seem pretty stable. My question is why not go out and find another young possibly even unproven head coach for football that might bring some youthful energy to a dead football program. I think that it is going to take something bold to turn this program around, so I don't really have any problem with making your teaching position tie in with your coaching.
  4. I think it was like Coach Davis said on the radio. We have been in some tough environments Pickett Co., Clarkrange, and it has made us a better team. Coalfield had a hard time dealing with the fact that Wartburg wouldn't go away when they got behind early. IMO, Coalfield is one of the toughest places to come from behind. Wartburg did it by being patient on offense and taking The Lady Jackets out of their half court offense by running a few different looks. Wartburg made a lot of adjustments after the first quarter and it became very hard for Coalfield to score.
  5. I had heard that also but dont know if it is the truth
  6. I was shocked at how sloppy the lady dogs looked at Harriman last night. They were up against a very athletic Harriman team but should have won by 25! 42 in the post played really weak and seemed afraid of the bigger stronger Harriman posts. If Settles and Staten hadn't been able to squeeze some points out Wartburg would have lost this one. In my opinion 11, 22, 1, and 30 played better than the others for the dogs. I was equally shocked at how calm coach davis was when the offense was struggling. He usually explodes when his kids play that poorly! I wonder why he didn't play more people? I don't feel like Wartburg can beat Coalfield without playing much better as a team. They had no movement on O, rarely took the ball inside, but were still one of the better defensive teams I've seen this year holding Harriman to 2 points in the first and 6 in the fourth!
  7. I can tell you this coalfield plays hard! A.J. is pretty dang good.
  8. Picking the game this early is nutty! First, you can't compare Coalfield and Wartburg because Coalfield hasn't played anyone that is very good. Now Wartburg has played Pickett Co., Greenback @ GB, and will play Harriman and Clarkrange. I feel like Wartburg's 2-2 is a pretty good record with the possible exception of Greenback even though Hammontree was outstanding. If they come in to the coalfield game 3-3 you've got to say that's pretty good given their competition. I think that wartburg will be a more game tested team and that could give them an edge. Where is the respect for a team that is 2-0 in the district. They beat Oneida by 28 and Coalfield only got them by 12. Do not discount the bulldogs ability to get better as the season goes. If they start 3-0 in the District then it could be bad news considering they've only had a few games to get used to Jason's coaching style.
  9. Does Wartburg have a chance to beat Coalfield in district play next week? I'm seeing alot of press about the Lady Jackets and their record is impressive. Do you think they will try to press the Lady Dogs and Lady Eagles? If so I look for them to call their attack off early as both teams seem to handle the full court well. Who is their best player? My money is on Landrum. She is a great point guard maybe the best in the district. Although 32 in blue and white may have something to say about that.
  10. I think Coalfield is a Lock to make the region this year! But like others have said where they finish 1-4 who knows. It's a bit funny to me when I look and see Wartburg Losing to Greenback, then Beating Oneida by 26, then Oneida beating Greenback, then Wartburg Beating Sunbright by 40, then Sunbright beating Midway, then Midway beating Greenback. This region is going to be up in the air until late in the season. But I think that Wartburg, Oakdale, and O.S. are the top of the heap in the Region! Of course Harriman could beat Wartburg Tuesday then things would be a major mess. The region is just sitting here waiting for a team to take control! That could be Coalfield's opportunity. We will see because they play Oakdale and Wartburg in the next two weeks.
  11. I heard that Oneida beat Greenback. Is this true? Sounds like they played Coalfield tough also. This district is going to be fun to watch this year. But right now I feel like O.S. is still the top team followed by Oakdale and then Wartburg and Coalfield. Based on what we have seen what does everyone else think. Any prediction revisions?
  12. I was suprised that coalfield only beat oneida by 12. What was the story of the game
  13. Team really looked good against pickett. They ran with an awesome looking team. Honestly the coach didn't do much in the game since it was run and gun. The team just ran out of fouls as many of the starters 3 I believe fouled out. They didn't look good at Greenback, but played great with Oneida tonight and look like things are really beginning to click. They enjoyed a big defensive effort against the lady indians and were able to play under control and as a team. It was so balanced i am not sure who was their leading scorer.
  14. If you look at the schedules coming up you can see that 4-A will play 7-A a few times this year. Wartburg plays Pickett and Clarkrange (2 times) Sunbright plays Monterey Coalfield plays Monterey and nobody else (this is a bit out of the blue but looking at coalfield's schedule it is clear they don't want to play anyone.) So, the district will play and I think learn to compete better with 7A in time. You've got to remember a district that has Oneida, Oakdale, Coalfield, and Wartburg is a pretty strong one. Give us some time and we'll be up there with the 7A powers.
  15. SDO, I had not thought about it until you pointed it out but the team did things exactly the same way I remember them last year. It did appear that they were in a match-up defense and they ran that cutting offense from last year also. I guess we will have to wait until next week to really see what this team is able to do. But I'll have to say the girls really didn't play very hard in the scrimmage. Of course they did as some say play everyone and their sister. Just a thought though the smaller posts looked pretty good for Wartburg on the Offensive end of things I'm always looking to find the positive side of things for things
  16. Oldschool, You are an idiot! How do you know what jason knows or doesn't! It was a scrimmage against a better team and the girls played very well! Why don't you go up to coach davis and tell him man to man that you think he doesn't know basketball and cant teach any kind of defense! I guarntee you it would be a good sight for those in attendance. Please wait until the first home game so we can all be there to see him tell you how it is! But lets not talk about it until you've seen it with your own eyes! The team was working on their fastbreak and transition defense. He also played alot of kids. I am fairly certain they played it close to the vest considering the number of non bulldog members of the audience!
  17. York did look like a very good team to me. They made a ton of three point shots. I thought the wartburg team looked a little nervous. But the team played very hard and hung with the York team pretty well. SDO it was running clock so both teams could have easily reached 70 points. It was fun to see the teams push the ball and run like that. York played about 7 kids and wartburg played something like 18 girls in the Varsity game. I'm also pretty sure that the team would have done much better and maybe even won had the subs been held down a bit. But, that's just how Jason is he always plays scrimmages like that. My only negative and I want to start this with a disclaimer that I really like the direction that the team is headed and coach davis, but it was in many ways typical Jason to a fault. He was stubborn when the defense they were in wasn't working and instead of changing up he forced them to keep playing it. I would have just ran something else. I guess he was just wanting the girls to play through it and fix it. I'm sure he had a reason for it!
  18. How to you rank Wartburg all the way at number 5? I was thinking about what a team needs to win and came up with this. Good point guard - Armes and McWhorter Shooters - Staten, Lavender, Settles Sound D - I'm hearing that the match-up is not going to be played anymore but they still will be able to get after it. Post D - Branstetter, Bunch, and Freels all seem ready to step it up. Senior Leadership from what I hear is pretty good. Coaching - Gonna be fine there also I could see 2nd or even 3rd but just cant see these kids in 5th place. Wait and see Lady Dogs will suprise many in this district this year.
  19. If Wartburg is going to be better than Oakdale then Jason will be a big part of that happening. Oldschool, are you saying that the team will win but the coach will be bad? i ve seen alot of basketball in this dist over the years and you won't go anywhere without coaching. But im glad that you think Jason is behind since you are probably one of those people that think the football team has made a big turn around. I really believe the girls believe and they have in your words earlier superdave bought in to the scheme. In normal situations the kids would need time to adjust oldschool. in this situation i think the fact that many of them have played for him before makes that learning process much easier. they know him pretty well so i think that has got to make things happen alot faster. they're going to be fine. to answer superdave's question I don't see any new faces contributing to teams except for Jordan at Coalfield all the other teams are pretty well set. not sure but you could possibly see a couple of soph players get time for wartburg this year but i dont know
  20. Oldschool and superdave, I don't know how you come to the conclusion that the dogs are behind oakdale or anyone else. The district will be very competitive and there are at least 4 very good teams maybe 5 with the additions made by Oneida. There is no disgrace finishing 4th in the district this year. Also, i think that too much is being made of the coaching thing. I dropped by their practice yesterday to just peek in, and saw them playing very hard. I cant imagine that any team has worked as hard as these girls given how they have lifted weights and conditioned during the fall. So, to this point I would have to grade Jason at an A level. They were very good over the summer and now they have completed what many of the kids say was a very good and fun fall workout period. From all I can tell as a fan and parent things are going pretty well and the team is getting better. What are our expectations as fans? Make it to the region and at least be mentioned as a team that can win the region title? I think that would be a good season for us. What do you think superdave?
  21. I am pretty sure that Wartburg plays Clarkrange in a home and away series. That will be a good early look at how ready the dogs are and how ready their coach is. 0-0 versus 700plus wins! That should be a neat contrast. I'm not saying that if they do not beat Clarkrange that their coach is not ready, but if they play the buffs tough then you've got to feel that the team is in good hands. Oliver Springs is without a doubt the best team in the district. Christopher is the best single player and Barger plays her position very well. Oakdale should be good. They have a very big team and are solid. Oneida is always there at the end. Wildcard Sunbright is very young. Coalfield has a great amount of talent and youth could be there at the end.
  22. i hope you are right scw86 but it is looking pretty bad. we r probably not goin to win a game for a couple more years and by then i am not able to see the kids bein able to bounce back, it is an awful situation. i think if we were A that the fresh and soph players would be very good but in our district it seems hard to think of a team we will beat except for oliver springs in the immediate future. i think the new coach is doing a pretty good job but im not sure it is / maybe ever was a coaching problem we need everyone to play that is able and its hard to get em to when you have a streak going on like ours. but i can tell a difference in the attitude of the boys and they compete harder.
  23. Could someone tell me why shoemaker is not getting a chance to be the head man?
  24. They will be down some in my opinion
  25. NOBODY IS LEAVING!!!!!!! This is just somebody that has a serious problem with Coach Davis! All next years Seniors are staying and I seriously doubt that any of the girls that played for him in Jr. High will leave and yes the kids from Petros are staying also. I checked it out today when I read that on here. So let me say again, NOBODY IS LEAVING! Some of you yellow jackets might like it if they did but they re NOT! His first post said that Coach Davis didn't get along with the PG at Central High or the former PG at Central Middle. That is a LIE GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT OSBORNE!
