  1. How good is Germantown? I know about the RB, what about the defense, throwing game, etc?

I was at the CBHS game so I can only comment on that one....the defense looked average, lb'ers looked fairly good though. No passing game although they do have one very fast receiver. Just can't seem to get the ball to him. That running back is the real deal and seems to be just about all they have. As hard as CBHS tried to contain him they couldn't.

  2. The only game I can comment on is Germantown vs. CBHS. Man, what an exciting game. CBHS has 2 good rb's, I give the edge to the younger guy as he appears a tad stronger. But holy cow, that rb for G'town can absolutely fly. Problem is G'town runs him in the ground, he appears to be all they have. I believe he had over 350 yds in this game.

  3. The last 2 years MUS running backs were sprinters on the track team. This year, they are baseball players. Their quickest and maybe fastest player probably is William Cross. He was the backup QB last year who directed 5 TDS against White Station after Brunetti went down. This year, out of necessity, he is a WR and is their best ball catcher. This is partly why an inexperienced Junior (Toby Baker) is at QB. He is a soccer (and BBall) player and a great punter, as anybody who saw the S Panola game can appreciate.

I was very impressed with Baker's punting. I was curious as to why #23 didn't run the ball more against SP. He seems to have decent speed and much more size and strength than the other RB, which could have been better. However, I will say that most any team will have trouble running the ball vs SP.

  4. In its loss to South Panola, MUS looked as slow as molasses at pretty much every position -- particularly @ RB. The QB also seemed like he was stuck in mud.

While Olive Branch does possess a lot of team speed, they are no South Panola!!! As such, I suspect that MUS will likely find enough ways to overcome its speed defecit....should be able to outlast OBs young team and pull out a narrow, hard fought victory.

    --------------------------------

As for the alleged post-game locker room incident........

Wow! Man, if that indeed happened ...that's a 100% CLASS-LESS thing to do! Olive Branch's Administration should feel totally embarrassed and take immediate steps to make amends to Brentwood Academy, somehow!

Their rb's did look slow, but I think they only had like 10 rushing attempts. I was surprised #23 didn't run the ball more, he only had 1 attempt. The qb did look stuck in the mud, but primarily at the hands of the SP defense, lol.

  5. MsPowerhouse,

You are 100% INCORRECT on both counts:

    1) Nowhere in my comments did I ever pick East to defeat Olive Branch!!

    2) I actually like Olive Branch and, for the record, have stated numerous times on the Mississippi boards that I root for Olive Branch everytime they are playing anyone... except a Tennessee team. By the way, I usually go watch OB play about 2 or 3 games per year.

For the record, here is a cut-and-paste copy of the comments that I posted (Posted: 8/13/2010 7:09 PM) on the Mississippi boards about the East-Olive Branch game:

Olive Branch will get "upset" by Mphs East.....according to some of the East fans, on the street. They are apparently expecting some big things out of their Mustangs this season.

    -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------

I have not seen East play during any scrimmages, yet. So, I can't vouch for the quality of their team; I just know that they will field a young, inexperienced (but, "talented," they say...) team, featuring their BLAZING fast RB -- Brian Kimbrow (consistently clocked sub 4.30 forty-yard dash times, this Spring).

Since OB is apparently a young team also (from what I've read on this board), who knows how all these "green" youngster's will perform, once the lights come on next Friday night @ Olive Branch. Given this, no outcome will surprise me.

For what it's worth, I can vouch for TraderB's support of OB...

  6. It's not going to seem right to look over at the Collierville sidelines and not see Paul Cox. Sean Abel will be the man that follows the man so to speak. He has been a long time assistant and is probably well deserving of his shot. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of changes if any he makes to the Collierville program.

    Go Trojans!

I believe you'll see some changes with Collierville. I expect them to open it up a little more on offense.

  7. Ok, so what I was told by an AD in the room is that it was stated they would eventually move back up. In a side conversation, not for the entire room to hear, it was stated they dropped down to win some state titles.

Not doubting that you were told that, but I find it very hard to believe that a reputable AD would say such a thing, even in a side conversation. I know the former AD for ECS, which was the AD at the time this decision was made, and he is a very reputable man.

  8. I'll be interested to see the kid from ECS. Assume he's pitching Friday night. He's an Ole Miss signee, isn't he? Webb's field is a pitcher's park (solid grass field, deep fences) so it will be interesting to see how he handles Webb's bats, which are very strong.

He has verbally committed to Ole Miss, but not signed since he's just a junior. Don't know for a fact, but I doubt Ole Miss offered based on his pitching. He's exceptionally fast with a good arm, solid outfielder.

I think his offer came right after he ran a blistering 60 (no, I can't remember the time) in pretty cold weather. If he develops more as a pitcher I suppose he could end up throwing for Ole Miss. You can never have enough lefties, obviously, but you're correct that he was not offered based on his pitching first. I suspect they saw him run and had visions of Jordan Henry.

I believe his 60 time was 6.4, which is pretty impressive in those conditions especially. I know Will pretty well. I doubt he will ever see the mound at Ole Miss, but hey, you never know!

  9. I'll be interested to see the kid from ECS. Assume he's pitching Friday night. He's an Ole Miss signee, isn't he? Webb's field is a pitcher's park (solid grass field, deep fences) so it will be interesting to see how he handles Webb's bats, which are very strong.

  10. An up and down weekend . But Dyer Co. calmly beat the #2 ranked AAA team in the State,Collierville ,on Saturday . March 20

The score was 7-1. they gave up 5 hits and one unearned run. Now that is something to build on. It was

    a team effort!!

Really doubt they are ranked higher than Bartlett or Farragut but it is still a quality win!

Collierville beat Bartlett 10-0 2nd game of the season.

  11. Get 'em KWC! I totally agree with you. The man has definately made improvements, no reason whatsoever to even think about firing him. My gosh, if you used that logic on every coach, every year, that'd be crazy...

LOL @ "Get'em" ... Thanks wsttnballer for your support in this matter. I mean ... some folk can be just down right unreasonable. Firing the man under those circumstances is just ... well ... i'm at a loss for words ... and that's unlike me.

Ha, I think you expressed yourself eloquently, didn't seem at a loss for words!

  12. It's my opinion. Like TraderB said, 7-4 seasons seemed to be the norm over the past several years. It just seems like nothing will change when you hire a guy that learned everything he knows from the coach that was there for 30+ years.

I know Shawn Abel is a straight up guy that seems to be very well liked and respected by most of the team as well as other students that don't even play. I say give him a chance. I would also say that just because he has worked under Coach Cox for all these years, he didn't necessarily "learn" everything he knows from him. I think he's smart enough, (in fact I know he is very intelligent), to know that things need to change and fully expect him to make changes. Give him a chance before passing judgement!

  13. My picks as follows:

Arlington 28-24 over Craigmont. Tigers somehow pull it out.

GTown 28-18 over Wooddale. Thornton has another big night.

Collierville 18-16 over Kirby. Gotta pull for C'ville, plus I feel sorry for them.

Whitehaven 32-28 over Mitchell. The Haven gets it done.

ECS 42-14 over FACS. FACS no match for the Eagles.

CBHS 27-14 over Briarcrest. CBHS is just the better team

  14. CBHS wins 24-14

I think most folks went with CBHS ... except for wstnballer ... we all knew who he was pulling for!

The CA's version of what happened is below.

    Purple Wave outlast pesky ECS

I went. It was a good game. Questionable officiating on back to back plays helped CBHS with their second score. From what I saw and what the people around me said, ECS wastes Harrison Jones. They don't throw to him and they don't run behind him. It just doesn't make any sense. I left with 3 minutes left in the game and he had 1 catch for like 6 yards.

Yeah, KWC, no doubt who I'm for, lol. BMack, you're right about those calls. ECS should have won that game, they ran it down CBHS's throats in the 1st half. Couldn't do much the 2nd half. Regarding Harrison Jones, it's disappointing this year. Everyone had high expectations out of him and they really aren't using him. His blocking really isn't that strong, they do have a strong interior line, so they are using that wisely and with success. As far as throwing to him, he's fine on balls thrown over his shoulder. He certainly has all the tools physically, I'm at a loss as to why they don't throw to him more as you can design plays that fit his strengths. He's a great kid and I wish him well at 'Bama but at this rate he won't be ready for the transistion.

  15. Ok Memphis area high school football fans we are in Week 7 which means we are past the half way mark and we are getting into the heart of most district games. By now we think we know who is for real and who isn't. As I said last week, some teams remain an enigma. The following are what I consider to be the Big Games in the Memphis and surrounding area for this week. You know the drill by now. My list is as follows:

    Bolton [D-14, 6A] @ Millington [D-14, 6A]

    Cordova [D-14, 6A] @ Arlington [D-14, 6A]

    Wooddale [D-15, 6A] vs Ridgeway [D-15, 5A] @ Halle

    White Station [D-16, 6A] @ Melrose [D-16, 5A]

    Mitchell [D-26, 5A] vs Memphis East [D-16, 5A] @ Fairgrounds

ECS [West DII - A] @ CBHS [West DII-AA] on Thursday, Oct. 8

    My picks are as follows:

Millington wins by a score of 28-7

    Arlington wins by a score of 17 - 14

Wooddale wins by a score of 24-21 (I honestly don't have a feel for either of these two teams)

White Station wins by a score of 35 - 28

Memphis East wins by a score of 42 - 35 (This is a do or die game for East)

    CBHS wins by a score of 21 - 17

Well ... that's it for me. What do you guys think?

By the way @ BlackhavenSenator ... I already know ... Whitehaven will beat Sheffield. (Respect Da Haven!)

    my picks:

    Millington 35 - 10

    Arlington 21 - 7

    Wooddale 24 - 14

    White Sta 42 - 28

    Mitchell 35 - 21

    ECS 21 - 17, (go Eagles!)

  16. Wsttnballer - You are absolutely right. I stand corrected. Moreover, Knoxville Catholic WAS in DII for at least one year. I too had gone to the TSSAA site and not found the info I sought. After hearing from you, I went back and it still took me 10 minutes to find it. (You obviously are a much better "surfer" than I). Thanks for setting me straight; I had scratched a bald spot on my already thinning scalp trying to figure out where WAS PJPII if not in DII? My misinformation had been seconded by a friend. He said they had been in a league with Goodpasture et al. It was easy to believe considering they are MUCH too big for DIIA now and are located (I believe) generally in the same area (north of Nashville). Now I can give my friend some grief - he is much younger than I and can't use the excuse of "age" for a faulty memory. Also, I have enjoyed perusing all the old playoff results and jarring my own poor memory.

Take it easy on BB tonight and I'll "see" you next week at CBHS, the BIG fish in the BIG pond. I always pull for DII teams and will be pulling for the Eagles in that game, admittedly the "underdog." I also have a "BONE TO PICK" (pun intended) with the Purple Wave - I attended the CBHS-White Station game and left with a purple paint handprint on my car. By the way, kudos to ECS for having far and away the best "Handicapped" parking I have ever seen. A model to others AND a relief to old crippled farts like me. When you built your new gym, you did the parking lot right.

Actually, I remembered JPII being in our district from us playing them. We beat them at their place back when they had Golden Tate. He was a heckuva player, really all they had back then. I did confirm it with the TSSAA website though. Next week should be a good game, ECS seems to be firing on all cylinders although they always seem to have a mental block with the brothers and MUS. Tonights game will probably get real ugly real fast, I look for a lot of playing time from the subs. I'll pass your compliments on the parking to the higher up's. I do look forward to your game tonight, should be a good one if WS has it all together.

  17. Wsttnballer - sorry - I hiccoughed when I hit the "submit" button. By the way - it appears that both you and I were half right (or half wrong) about Webb and PJPII. Apparently Webb WAS in your division at the same time but PJPII WASN"T. That's not "etched in stone" - it's hard to get historical info on the net about this type of history. I also had forgotten that for a short period of time, there were three divisions, and you were in the middle one. Bishop Byrne won the small division one year. Not all Catholic schools are in DII. Knoxville Catholic never has been, Chattanooga Notre Dame used to be but isn't now, and PJPII is now but wasn't in the past. Curious but generally worthless facts.

According to TSSAA website, Pope John Paul II was eliminated from state in both '05 and '06 by Webb? I believe this was the time period you mentioned of there being 3 divisions.

  18. Wsttnballer. You disappoint me. I may have trouble falling asleep tonight because you won't answer the BIG question: Why did ECS, a big-time competitor in all sports in DIIAA, choose to switch to DIIA, where they probably sweep all the state championships? You might make Sports Illustrated! Repeatedly, I have praised ECS to the heavens, but you choose to focus on the perceived "dig" of my mentioning the simple (and logical) fact that you didn't do quite as well in DIIAA as DIIA. Your silence says a lot.

Wow, it got 2 responses! I know, I breaking my word by responding to this, but I couldn't help it... I'm really sorry to disappoint you...;) , and no desire to make Sports Illustrated.

  19. I could be wrong, but I recall when ECS and Briarcrest were playing almost every year in the Greater Memphis Christian School + One League "state" championship, that the only school outside metro Memphis was Davidson Academy of Nashville. My friends and I used to joke about it. Maybe it's just that Webb and PJPII never made it to the playoffs or got beat early.

Why do you keep bringing up your DIIAA record OR how it compared to MUS? I have acknowledged that you did "well." That is why MANY DIIAA fans (MUS, CBHS, Briarcrest are the ones I know) don't understand why you left (as it APPEARS, to become the big fish in the little IIA pond, which you ARE). You probably can and will win the "state championship" in every boys' sport and most of the girls'. How competitive is that? BGA, Ensworth, and Brentwood Academy are all smaller than you and chose IIAA. A lot of it also is disappointment that we now have only a 4 team league and have to look so hard to fill our schedules and that we won't be playing YOU regularly! Trust me, the "ECS games" in football, basketball and baseball were highly anticipated by the 3 schools I mentioned. And your soccer team knocked MUS out of the playoffs last spring. I don't think anybody really cared about Harding leaving, though their BBall team was usually competitive. ECS has been competitive in EVERY sport at DIIAA!

As far as WEBB, I thought it was self-evident that I was referring to your preordained REGULAR season schedule NOT the playoffs. There's not a team in WEST IIA that you shouldn't pummel - and that's 7 of your games? Why not play a 4 game DIIAA competitive schedule and throw in 4 or 5 games with DIIA teams for jollies? Personally, when MUS plays noncompetitive teams, I often don't go and if I do, leave at halftime.

The question still hasn't been answered as to why you left DIIAA for DIIA....It's OK to say "I don't know" if you truly don't know.

One last response to this subject and I'm done. Regarding "me keep bringing up our record and how we compared to MUS, for starters, that was the first response in which I mentioned our record or how we compared to MUS, and it was only a response to your dig regarding the fact that we began losing games and didn't get very far in the play-offs when we moved up. As far as answering your question about why we left DIIAA for DIIA, I'll leave that to your imagination.

  20.

SP came back on MUS via the run not the pass!

I stand corrected a second time.

Irondawg ... care to prognosticate on the games mentioned? I mean ... you are here, you may as well have at it like the rest of us. What do you say? It's all harmless fun.

ha, I don't know, last week's thread got a little contentious, lol.
