  1. Even with rubber cleats she would have still hurt her ankle.

I have been around many ballparks over the years, and on many occasions, have seen

partial or whole rubber cleats in the dirt, that have been torn off a player's shoes.

But anyone would be hard pressed to find a metal cleat that has been torn from the shoe!

  2. Bad migraine over night but, Ok here I am and here is how I saw it. Shelby Davis was coming hard on the bunt by Keele and made a great slide and the ump did not hesitate on the call and said safe. I talked to some people that did not care who won, (fans of a different team) that were there just watching good softball and said the catcher missed the tag. They also said they wished their team could have played in such a great game. As for the trophy enough said time to move on. As for the stacking the tournament if that were true why didn't Terry put himself up against Giles Co. in tournament so Coffee Co. would have had a forfeit that did not happen. MJ has a great team and I'm sure they'll have a great run in the post season. By the way Coffee Co. is not too bad as they have won 11 in a row outscoring their opponents 68-16 in that run. Pitching by Freshman Casey Vincent who by the way pitched against MJ has very good on the mound and at the plate hitting around .440 for the year and leads the team HR's. Jr. Kristen Swan is pitching the best I've seen her throw and is becoming a leader with her play at 1st and doing everything she is ask for at the plate. Tiffany McCormick had a solid tournament, this girl is harder on herself than anyone I've seen and she stepped up big with several hits including a big one to start the rally. Leslie Keele what can I say but BIGTIME play all weekend. Fr. Veronica Blackburn knocked in several runs and got her first varsity HR. Willis played very well at SS and came back and played in the championship after being helped off the field with an injury in the game vs. Hendersonville. Catcher scored the winning run had some big at bats and caught all 5 games yesterday. Jessica Downs our RF played hurt all weekend but never came out even hobbling off the field at times. Whitney McWhorter is playing lights out in CF. Whoever Terry calls on in LF Beth Davis or Taylor Baldwin has played some great D for us. Thanks to Christi Davis who had a big hit in the Hendersonville game and played well at 2nd after coming in after Willis was hurt. Kaitlyn Thorton had good tournament as our CR as it seemed like she was out there a lot running for someone. Good luck to the Lady Raiders tomorrow night vs. Shelbyville in game a game that will determine 2nd place in 8-AAA.

Over the years, I have come to realize, there are two sides to every story, and somewhere

in the middle lies the truth.

And when you put that rationalization to sports....if someone describes a game ending play

as a bang-bang call, (as another has posted) then their team MUST have been on the happy side

of the call. And the team on the sad side will call it a blown or bad call.

I also saw the play in question, and I respectfully disagree with your description of the play.

I saw the umpire standing behind the plate when the play occurred. The umpire then circled around

the play to the mound side of the plate, and asked the catcher if she had the ball. When catcher showed

the ball in her glove, the umpire signaled safe.

From my viewpoint, I did not have the angle to see if the tag was actually made or not. But why would

the umpire circle around and ask to see the ball, if he/she knew immediately, the runner was safe?

Between each inning, the homeplate umpire would stand a few feet from the plate, on the first base foul line.

The 1B umpire would stand on the same line, about halfway between home and 1B.

However, on several occassions, the 3B umpire would walk over to the 3B fence and carry on a conversation

with someone who appeared to be from CC. The 3B umpire was involved in a couple of calls, that got the

MJ fans upset, and when the call at home occured, they were very upset, and the words "home cooking"

    came out.

  3. Here's a post I can support. Use this one instead of showing the girl's leg with 27 stitches in it where she laid her leg down in front of the bag and miraculously got spiked! It's been proven that girls are more susceptible to ACL injuries for the reasons stated. If metal cleats enhance that in any way, then I don't have a problem with girl's not wearing them for safety reasons. If the excuse is because they are hanging bags and getting spiked by sliding girls then I have a problem with the technique that is being taught.

    Agree....good post. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  4. Check this picture out:If this was your daughter would you feel the same.

All teams had the option of wearing metal...it was not mandated by TSSAA.Since they have been allowed, I believe (JMO) many of the injuries will be attributed to the technique softball players have either been taught or have learned on their own, of blocking a base with a leg on a tag play. With plastic cleats, it was not as big of an issue. Now that the metal cleats are being allowed, all coaches should re-teach their players how to tag a sliding base runner, WITHOUT using their leg to block the base.Saw one SS get cleated 3 times in the same game, because she was blocking 2B with her left leg on steals. As someone with a scar on their ankle from playing baseball, I can sympathize with the playersthat are hurt, and pass along best wishes for a full recovery. But I also think this topic should have been addressed by all coaches, to avoid these type injuries, and injuries from sliding with metal cleats

  5. I've thought the same thing and I agree. But, even if the T$$AA would agree to it, I'm sure coaches don't want to begin the logistical nightmare of making last-minute calls to coaches and umpires to schedule games.

I agree, that would be a drawback.

Especially when you are near the end of the season.

But if you lose tournament games early in the season, some coaches may take

the time, IF the option is available.

For instance, let's say your 1st tournament of the season is completely rained out.

It would give the coach the option to find a replacement tournament later in the year,

that currently is not an option.

  6. If your HS team schedules a tournament, TSSAA counts it as 4, toward your limit of games.

    (3 pool + 1 single elim)

However, if any of those games are rained out, they still count toward the limit.

Example: If you get to play 2 pool games on Friday, and the 3rd pool game and all of single

elimination is rained out on Saturday, you only played 2 games, but still get charged for 4.

Why does TSSAA not let the schools replace these games?

With the many rainouts some schools have experienced this year, I think the schools

should have the option of replacing any lost tournament games. (JMO)

  9. With high school season hitting an important stretch, Softballpower.tv ranks these teams in the Top 15:1 Fairview 2 Creek Wood 3 Beech 4 Riverdale 5 Siegel 6 Bolton 7 Camden Central 8 Covington 9 Dobyns-Bennett 10 Munford 11 North Greene 12 Rossview 13 Rutledge 14 Science Hill 15 Ooltewah Do you think this seems pretty accurate? Any other great high school teams out there that you think belong on the list?

Where is 2007 Div II State Champion GPS?

Where is 2007 Class A Champion Trinity?

Where is 2007 Class AA Champion Goodpasture?

Why is Ooltewah ranked 15th, when they are ranked in the USA Today top 20 in the nation?

  10. Go to each team's individual schedule on Coach T and you should see the strength ranking. It combines win-loss record and opponents' records. Lots of teams including good teams have limited results on here which can throw things off.

Just for verification reasons.....if team ABC is 23-2, and both loses are to team XYZ, and team ABC ONLY has the two loses to XYZ listed on their schedule, (none of the 23 wins), then XYZ does not get "full credit" for beating a team that is 23-2. They get credit for beating a team that is 0-2.

    Correct?

  11. Powell's All-State centerfielder and Tennessee Tech signee, Cassidy Skeen is out for the remainder of the 2008 season due to a broken bone in her right foot. She will be in a cast for up to 8 weeks, but surgery should not be necessary and a full recovery is expected following physical therapy. She plans on playing outfield for the Tennessee Fury out of Chatanooga this summer in 18U Gold before heading to Tech in the fall.

Always sad to hear of a season ending injury.

Best wishes for a full recovery.

  12. They did get some games in Friday night, but then had to call the games for the night because of lightning and then rain. They pushed the rest of the Friday night pool play games to Saturday am and then played out the tournament. Saturday's weather was sunny, warm and very windy.

That helped dry the fields out quickly!

  13. I read that Ooltewah beat Gibbs to win the Knoxville Tourney by a score of 6-0.It is my understanding that in the Semi-Finals, Ooltewah was down 2-0 in the bottom of the last inning and got 3 runs across to win on a couple of errors and a bad call (hey...they are all bad calls when you come up short)!Give me some feedback and who were the pitchers for that game cause that sounded like the game of the tournament.

Did they have any weather issues, like most of the tournaments have dealt with this year?

  14. Wow what is going on in the Boro? Riverdale has scored 2 runs in three games. When Cat was there that would have been enough to have won most games now that she is hurt (She is the best pitcher in TN) things have changed in the Boro.Such as

    Losing to Rossview......

Losing to a little single A school

    Getting Run Rule

Not putting their scores in the local paper

Not putting their scores on Coacht

Not puttng their scores in the Tennessean

But hey this is a new day and things will get better maybe! /flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flower:" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

And there are times when you DO call in your scores, and the local paper (insert name) in

your area, still does not include them.

Guess it depends on how many stories they want to include in the Sports page.

Sometimes, this is not a team or coach's fault.

  15. catsbacker are you just looking for something to argue about. From every post I see you comment on it seems that is your intention. I'm telling you if she "intended" to hit her the first pitch would have got her, no doubt. It doesn't matter where the pitch is if you run into it, now does it. If a pitcher allows a batter to dictate where the pitches will be, the battle is already lost. My logic is if you challenge a pitcher you know what you are asking for. and when it comes high and tight you have 2 choices get drilled or get out of the way.PERIOD!!

Well, for most(not all), the fastest pitch a pitcher throws is the riseball.

Therefore, if a pitcher is throwing a riseball "high and tight", to establish the inside corner, the reaction time

of the batter is greatly reduced, compared to other pitches. This increases the possibility of a head injury.

Establishing the inside corner by throwing at the hip or leg area is one thing, but going head hunting to

intentionally hurt a player, (IMHO), is totally uncalled for and un-sportsmanlike.

If you watch major league baseball, even in a non-retaliation situation, if the pitch is thrown near a hitter's

head, that is when words are exchanged and/or benches empty, and brawls occur

I thought this was a SOFTBALL message board!!!!

  18. Hey little ol single A school FCS gave the #15 ranked team SPARKMAN 25-2 one of there defeats, In the GULF SHORES tournament. Not bad.

According to the Alabama CoachT, they also lost to Mt. Juliet in the Bob Jones Tournament.

So both loses to Wilson County teams.

  19. Riverdale vs. Hendersonville---Well the mighty Warriors sure let MrNoitAll down yesterday with losing to the Lady Hawks from Clarksville! It took Riverdale until the 7th to score a single run against Elrod but that will not be the problem today as Hendersonville is letting a lot of people score runs against them! Loser is Hendersonville!

Forrest vs. Hendersonville---well the Rockets will face another school that has only 1,275 more students than Chapel Hill??¦.I am not sure that Chapel Hill has 1,275 living in the town! But the powerful A team will beat the big boys today. Loser is Hendersonville!!

    /flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":flower:" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />

So Hendersonville is playing a double header against Riverdale and Forrest?

  20. You said it, have you ever seen a umpire that was calling balls and stikes be able to see a runner leaving early at second base. I guess he has two sets of eyes.

If the runner was at 2B, yes I think the homeplate umpire can see the runner leave early, since they are looking directly at the pitcher and 2B. But at 1B, or 3B, no.

  21. hmmmm, seems you will use the rule book when your team is not getting it done on the field. I have my share of disagreements with umpires in the past, mostly dealing with the an inconsistent strike zone, because batters and ptichers can adjust to an umpires strike if he is consistant. But to complain to an umpire in the the last inning with a player on third, and to hope he will call an illegal pitch so you can win a game is so bush league. Complain at the beginning or let it ride and leave it up to the umpires. As other posts have mentioned, if the pitcher throws illegal and is not willing to pitch correctly it will hurt her in travel and the next level. If i am interpreting your post incorrectly i apologize

In most instances, the complaint at the end of the game was more an attempt to give the pitcher something to think about,or disrupt her timing, (since it was never enforced), and we needed 1 or 2 runs to tie, rather than to win a game. Another disruption would be to bunt. Especially if a pitcher's follow through was to one side or the other.

Don't get me wrong, I was NOT a coach that had an attitude of win at all costs.

I like PLAYERS determining the outcome, but again within the established rules.

I agree with Swingaway, by not calling the infraction, it is only hurting the pitchers when they advance

    to the next level.

I asked for thoughts and opinions on the subject, and many have replied. Thank you.

In my original post, I stated this was just a pet peeve of mine....and I believe the RULES on this subject

should be enforced by the umpires, or taken out of the rule book. I still stand by that statement.

  22. Solution! Have a parent record games, including any conversation with the umpire (from outside the fence)

and send it to TSSAA! If they don't give you an answer it will at least send a message to the umpires in

question becuase TSSAA will contact them.

    That is a good suggestion!

However, I am afraid it would put a big target on a coach's back....throw that coach out, if we hear any

complaints about the other team's pitcher!!
