Heritage may be better this year but the schedule is tough. Hearing they will move down to 4 A next year which will help the situation. They have a good coach and he has proven he will hang around and see this thing through.

Their feeder programs are in the best shape they've ever been.

Understand the young thing.  I was one of those.  Barely 17 when I graduated from high school and started college.

But redshirting for athletic purposes isn't doing them any favors, in my opinion.  Life isn't always going to be fair.

Athletics is just a piece. It can help them academically, socially and add confidence. I was still 17 when I finished my first quarter at UT. I was the last to get my driver's license. It's not always just for athletics.

Lots of 7th grade redshirttin' going on these days.

I've been around youth sports for a long time.  I've never heard parents say that they wished they hadn't "redshirted" their child.  But, I've known quite a few that wished they had...especially when their child was really young for his/her grade.

My favorite game of the 1980'S, that's why I remember it so well.

I think I remember that the Rebels missed their second extra point making it 13-0 and thus having good reason to go for 2 when they scored again, making it 21-0.  But, they continued to go for 2 for the next 4 scores before halftime.  At that point, everyone knew a statement was being made.

Here is what's very concerning about the Booster's Club that I pulled up online of the revenue the High School has taken in the past11 years.

    2012      231,508

    2013      245,985

    2014      250,971

    2015      268,264

    2016       309,064

    2017       389,289

    2018       352,064

    2019       417,010

    2020        65,985

    2021       54,723

    2022       45,800

There's a very reasonable explanation for the decrease starting in 2020 and it really has nothing to do with leadership.  I don't think here is the place to explain the numbers.  Rest assured.  I do know.

True or false.  Is NIL applicable to high schools in the state and are schools actually allowed to "pay" athletes now?  At one time, Maryville's success and the quality of their coaching staff (both professionally and personally) 'recruited' some really good players and families to move into their zone.  If $$ is actually involved now, that changes the whole dynamic, does it not?

Really asking.  No "veiled agenda" here.

NIL is applicable.  Here's an article announcing Alcoa's program.

I think the missing piece is something else Barney. Every year my youth league has a jamboree and used to I would always hear a couple parents brag about taking their kid to the qb school at maryville that lasted all week and how awesome Junior did and how much he learned and they thought for sure their kid’s team would win the English mountain Super Bowl. This past weekend I was calling different directors in the league and we were finalizing some rule changes for the upcoming season and one of the directors told me a parent in his community took his son to the maryville football camp and it was nothing but a 90 minute p.e. class. He said looked like coach had something else he’d rather be doing and all the kids did was basically run. Very little actual football instruction. If that youth camp has gone from a 5 day “qb school”to a 90 minute game of tag then I’m sure there’s a parallel to a drop off at the high school level. And I get it. It’s hard to balance 2 jobs. I have to protect and serve and lead a flock to stay on the straight and narrow. It’s tough juggling both but I live by the motto keep the main thing the main thing. Sounds like at freedman institute the main thing is 6% and supplement is when there’s no listings to show.

There is one evening camp that is exactly as you describe.   However, there's a QB/Receiver camp and OL/DL camp for the youth ages that are quite instructional.

Wow. I really hate this happened for the players and for that family. They should be applauded and thanked for their efforts. However, based solely on the article (ie there may be relevant details not reported & clarified), I’d like to offer another potential perspective. Public schools MUST follow rules of TN Comptrollers office on encumbering & expenditure of monies. That means you have to requisition money well ahead of time (via a dated purchase order) that specifically denotes what the money will be spent for and to what vendor. Then the invoice/bill (dated after the PO) has to match up to that PO, for a check to be cut and said vendor imbursed, or an individual re-imbursed, if they pd for it out of their own pocket. It sounds like that didn’t happen. If not, the school will get in MAJOR trouble w/ state Comptroller, at their annual end of fiscal yr audit. Acc to the article the Coach/school agreed to pay the selling agent for the lockers, even above a certain amt over what the family agreed to donate toward purchase of the lockers. Sounds like money for the lockers requisitioned, maybe up to $3K or so. Howevs, does not sound like any money to reimburse the family for travel expenses was not agreed upon ahead of time, and the “family took matters into their own hands.” I suspect therein lies the problem. There would have to be a SEPARATE PO for the travel/airline ticket etc dated BEFORE the purchase of such, for any monies to be legally expended for such. Even if the school WANTED to reimburse the family, they likely could not have, without running major risk of breaking the law, which then would jeopardize them in terms of ALL future funding coming from the state & federal entities for their school. As a former educator, if I ever spent money out of my own pocket even for a proverbial paper clip, I knew I’d better have that requisitioned & approved ahead of time, if I needed reimbursement, esp s’thing as big as an airline ticket. Also there’s also caps/limits on other travel expenses for staff, via per diem, like mileage/meals etc. You eat more or stay in a hotel more than your per diem allows, then that comes out of your own pocket, etc. I suspect the family, in “taking matters into their own hands” did not ask abt such or operate under those guidelines.

Again, it is a horrible misfortune for all parties involved, but I can see how it is plausible that the school cannot provide reimbursement to the family. Sounds like the agreement & PO was for the EQUIPMENT (lockers), not the additional un-requisitioned expenses. Miscommunication and/or lack of communication on the family’s part may also be a factor in this, not just the school’s.

Just offering another possible explanation. Hope they can find a positive resolution for all.

At this point, could the parents just effectively have become the new vendor and the school go through the required process to "purchase" the lockers from the parents?

    Places I have been recently:

    1. Baylor....just a picturesque setting in an old school stadium...surrounded by tall pine trees

    2. Ravenwood...incredible setting surrounded by the hills

    3.  McCallie...I add McCallie for the views of the Smoky Mountains from the visitors' side

    4.  Alcoa...has been a while but another picturesque East TN venue

Heritage is quite awesome facing the mountains in October especially.

I'll give them this much, their coaching staff is more visable than anyone else in the county. I see something about them every single day somewhere.

The high school coaches have really bought in to incorporating the feeder program with the high school program, too.

Derek May have to face the fact and possibly play one or two of his best athletes both ways since they're all the sudden became a shortage of them. We always have a great supply of smart and good high school football players and great coaching to go with it. I would kill to go see one of the spring practices but my company is in the restoration business and the phone has been hotter the past 3 weeks than a door knob on a ho house on nickel night.

Over the years, GQ frequently played some of his best athletes both ways.

that's not true though.  In Knoxville, I knw most young teachers don't get highered at Marville and OR, it's people that have been teaching a while go there.  and they automatially get paid more because of the experience.  And that would effect the average salary for sure.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.  I  meant that  Oak Ridge's, Maryville's & Alcoa's starting salaries are the highest among all TN public schools.  And the good point was made by osunut2 about higher degrees getting rewarded with higher salaries.

Yep. I know several who have gone from teaching/coaching in Knox County to Oak Ridge system schools.  They have all gotten substantial pay increases.

Same from Knox County to Maryville and Alcoa City schools.

Yes. It's interesting the OR is #1, followed by Maryville at #2 and Alcoa at #3.  Sort of explains how Maryville and Alcoa have the same staff, year in and year out.

I asked about salaries because this is the challenge with Public Schools.  They are very limited on what they can pay their coaches.  Pretty much all of the salaries are the same regardless of what size school you coach at.  Why would a coach who has been very successful leave their current situation to rebuild another program for the same pay?  Also, if you are very successful, the private schools come calling and double your salary.  This leaves the administration stuck having to usually hire an up and comer or get very lucky and find somebody who is wanting a new challenge.  I don't envy Principals in having to make these hires.

Oak Ridge has the highest average teachers' pay among all public schools in Tennessee.  If a coach is coming from another public high school, it is likely that he'd get a pretty fair raise plus a larger (than most) coaching supplement.

A lot of you may not understand my actions towards all that has happened and a lot of it has to do with living through the exact same thing at Maryville years ago. Oak Ridge School leaders has just fired the biggest name in the history of West High Football after one season.  Maryville High Leaders fired one of the two biggest names in the history of Oak Ridge Football after one season. What I learned from that and to be perfectly honest was that no one from a previous coaching program should ever be or have an opinion determiimg the faith of their successor. The program will be divided and fans will fight like cats and dogs over the next hire. The program will become mediocre and hopefully down the road another GQ will come aboard and resurrect the program to prominence again. End of story. PS Sweet Science everyone of the coaches, school officials, elected officials read this stuff and sweat bullets when their called out. That's how You get things you want. Always remember the squeaky  wheel gets greased first.

He made the "wrong" kids run too much.  It was basically one set of parents.

Well Maryville is getting a new scoreboard which was announced in the paper yesterday. Should have seen all the comments from the butthurt county people.

And, the scoreboard is being paid for by previous years' advertisements in the stadium and on the scoreboard.  No tax dollars are being spend by the city.
