  1. Boy, this one can be very good, if Mitchell shows up and plays smart- based on what I hear. I have not seen Mitchell play this year, but I have talked to a couple of guys that have. I am going with CBHS is this one, but after the last two weeks I just want to see a decent game on Walnut Grove.

CBHS is dangerous now. Watson is seasoned now. However Mitchell's # 5 MLB Andrew Franklin will be on the prowl. Mitchell is hurting right now in the backfield, those problems will be resolved when the twins make it over there next year. However I see CBHS pulling this one out only if they contain #5.

  2. Man ... what a game. 34-28, Fairley! So ... Kingsbury beat Melrose ... 13-12. Fairley beat Kingsbury 34-28. Fairley and Melrose have yet to play. If Fairley wins ... then Fairley is the #1 seed, Kingsbury is the #2 seed, Melrose is the #3 seed, and Raleigh-Eygpt is the #4 seed because they beat East on Thursday night 28-16, or something like that.

What happens if Melrose beats Fairley on Octber 19th at Melrose Stadium? That's a 3-way tie. Melrose beats Fairley, Fairley beats Kingbury, and Kingsbury beat Melrose. How on earth will the seeds be decided? I'm sure that the TSSAA has a format to use ... but regardless ... it's going to be a mess. Melrose still has a shot to be the number 1 seed. Does anybody know the answer to this question?

I wonder if TSSAA will use the point system to break the tie.If Melrose beats Fairley by 2 points or more then Melrose should be #1 seed since Kingsbury beat Melrose 13 - 12.

  3. So much we don't know about the situation, but as a coach, if I am playing a "cupcake" team, then those are the games where I allow kids who may have less talent (#34), but have practiced all summer and all week, to have an opportunity to play. Why would I risk injury to my only "playmaker" (#32) in a game we are going to easily win. Like I said, just a thought but no one knows the whole situation other than Coach and player.

How right you are, because I bet you didn't know that Hamilton was favored to win. Did you know that the score was 0- 0 in the first quarter when #32 was pulled. Melrose didn't know that Hamilton was going to be that awful. So noone expected Melrose to blow Hamilton out.

  4. Wow........since when has melrose had only one playmaker. Boy, times sure have changed.

Well I got this information from inhouse at Melrose. The coach is old school. His philosophy is that Seniors should start. Melrose has a ton of talent that never makes it on to the field. They have at least 20 players on the sideline that can start at any other school but are on the bench. Melrose have the young twins and these kids are blazing fast. The rumor is that they are going to transfer.

  5. So ... would you suggest that I skip the Whitehaven/Hamilton game this Friday... because ... I feel like Whitehaven will win that one and pack my grip and roll out to the Fairgrounds and watch Kingsbury play Fairley?

Yeah I would go watch the Kingsbury vs Fairley game. The Whitehaven vs Hamilton will be a lopsided victory for Whitehaven. Hamilton is very young and inexperienced.

What did you make of Gabriel Hunter's 200 yard performance against Germantown not to mention the 34-21 pasting Kingsbury put on G-town? Man ... and he's just a Jr. ... whew!

Hunter is something unique. His running style is something of a NFL running back. In little league, middle school, and high s chool your primarily taught to hit the hole running. However as you progress to College or The NFL, does lessons take a 180 turn, in which most of the times you have to be patient and then burst through the hole. Hunter does exactly that, for the most part he doesn't attack the hole until he see it opens. Once Hunter sees the hole then OH MY Godb eware because he will hit it hard. Congrats goes out to Hunter for a heck of a season so far.

  7. Yeah, you are right. Anytime something goes wrong, the Parent should be there to make it right. Quitting on your teammates is always a good choice.

Well Mr. "I didn't read it all " , I said that his father pulled him from the game. He didn't want to leave. Next time you read a little more carefully and truly comprehend what you have read, before you make an assumption !

  8. #32 Casey Calvin won the starting runningback job in week 3 of The MIAA football season. For whatever reason Melrose coach Hubbard Alexander decided to go with the lesser talent #34 at starting runningback last night. This angered many fans and Calvin's father. It was midway through the first quarter when about 100-200 of the 2,000 fans in attendance immediately rose to their feet pointing. I thought there was a small fight or something, but the ramblings through the stands were #32 is gone. I look down at the sideline and Calvin and his father is headed for the exit gate. I personally don't condone that move, but I understand their side of it. The game of high school football has definetly passed Coach Hubbard Alexander by. I can't blame any parent who refuse to let their child get screwed over like that. There is a similar situation in college. It is simply evident that #2 Graig Cooper of The Miami Hurricanes is better than # 5 Javarius James. However James always starts. The politics in football is ridicolous. It is simple, the best 11 should play. If you have a 9th grade freshman that is more talented than a senior, then the freshman should start !

  9. highschoolking,

Sounds like you got mad at my comment. Didn't mean to offend you, but think aobut this...why can't a parent film there son that plays for UT (or any college)? I simply said there would be a / some high school (s) that would not let you do it.

Come to think of it, has any parent ever filmed the state championship game before?

Oh no, I did not get mad at your comment. I would get mad if TSSAA or a high school tried to stop parents from bringing in video cameras to record games.

  10. Give me a run down on how region 8 will finish and how they will match up with region 7. We'll be able to tell a lot after the Munford-Kingsbury game.

    Region 8- 4a

    1. Fairley

    2. Kingsbury

    3. Melrose

    4. East

    Region 8- 7a

    1. Henry County

    2. Munford

    3. ?

    4. ?

I think Henry County will win the Region

  11. I would venture to say some schools will not allow you to film games at their field. However, your school should be willing to make you a copy of the game if you request it.

This is Bullsh*t. If I want to video my son or daughter's game then I should be able to. Football is football. You still have to play the game and stop whatever.

  12. How good is Fairley. Can they beat kingsbury and create a three way tie in region 8.

Fairley can contain Kingsbury runningback for four quarters. Melrose actually did it, but gave up a long play which resulted in a touchdown. Fairley offensively share the same woes as Melrose, in which the offensive line play is poor. However Fairley uses more speed in the backfield and actually have receivers that will catch the ball. So I would say that Fairley is a little more potent than Melrose on the offensive side of the ball. Fairley should be able to win Region 8 -4a. I bring up Melrose because I was at the Kingsbnury and Melrose game so my opinion is based on what I seen from The Kingsbury vs Melrose game.

  13. Fairley has a good defense, however they will not be strong enough to contain White Station high power offense. Fairley coaches are coming around and starting to use all of their runningbacks. Gregory is small but superfast and should be utilized more. I see Whitestation beating the bulldogs 37 -6

  14. I watched Melrose play Memphis Christian Brothers.

They are still good on defense but not as dominant as the Melrose teams that played Maryville. Of course those Melrose teams had some great players. Michael Carter was a beast. I don't see a Michael Carter on this team.

Graig Cooper was the reason Melrose was so scary on offense those years. I don't see no one like Cooper on offense.

Melrose still has some talent but not near as much talent as teams in the past had.

They will have to bring in a good coach to get back to winning !

  15. The Madison situation is in the past (old issue). And, I doubt if he would have had a positive impact on last year's team.

The big problem this year is simply coaching. A component of bad coaching is Melrose's case, is poor offensive line coaching. The coaches have simply failed to put a decent/well-coached offensive line on the field. This has nullified the potential they seem to have at the skill positions. You would think that they would improve as the season progresses, but so far, there is no sign of improvement.

It is not all on the offensive line. Calvin and Nash have had some holes to run through. The biggest issue is play selection. Now the O- Line is not the greatest in the city but at the same time, it is not the worst either. Kingsbury or Whitehaven didn't live in Melrose backfield all night. Poor play selection is their main problem and that is attributed to the inability to manage a football game.

  16. What ever they are doing, well I hope they keep doing it, it seems to be causing problems in the ranks. I tell you, i saw tem play in the Jamboree in 2006 against Ridgeway and thought the Madison kid was the main reason they won that jamboree, I here the next week that he is not the starter and is not even on the field. Courtney then transfers out and may well had been the answer that Melrsoe needed last year, from my perspective, he created lots of problems with his athleticism, they lost that with the change.

Yeah that was last year and that din't sit well with me. The coach didn't want Madison at quarterback so they put him on the sidelines. Courtney Madison was one of the most electricfying players in the area last year. I was shocked that they didn't put him on the field as a receiver. The kid was just on the sideline and ended up transferring to Munford where he gave competitors complete heck.

  17. I have seen Melrose play. Their defense is great, but their offense is terrible. You would think with all the athletes Melrose has they could score.

Dude I can't even tell you the amount of talent that Melrose have. This is a true testament of how pitiful the coaching is over there. They have kids that don't play that could go and start for any other schools. Alot of kids go over there for the hype but the hype has faded away until they bring in a new & fired up coach.

  18. Did Melrose get a new coach this season?

Melrose got a new coach last season. He is Hubbard Alexander, who was the receivers coach for The Dallas Cowboys in 1990 - 1994. He has a wealth of knowledge about football, but he can't relate to the game of high school football at all. This has cost the demise of Melros football. It is a very good chance that he may be fired after this season. The Orange Mound Community will not tolerate a mediocre football team.

Doesn't matter. Everybody in 4a is playing for second. Maryville may have their best team yet.

You're right Maryville is a force to be reckoned with. On paper they will be State Champs again. However anything can happen on any given Friday night.

  19. Teams are standing in line to get at Melrose, After losing to Mitchell, Whitehaven, and Kingsbury so far. Memphis area teams are standing in line impatiently to get a piece of Melrose. With Hamilton, Fairley, Northside, East and Fayette Ware still on the schedule Melrose could easily be looking at going 4 -6 on the season and barely making

the playoffs. The current coaching staff has done a outstanding job at tearing down a legacy in one season. I am at a loss. How could you get rid of a coach who take you to the state championship and was in the game with Maryville before mental breakdowns in the 4th quarter and then go out and get a coach who is out of touch with high school football ?

  20. i guess melrose didn't get "embarassed" like some of you folks thought. it doesn't even matter that WH's qb got hurt cause thats just apart of football

You're right. Melrose defensive front and linebackers is the core of that team. However WHS receivers did get behind the secondary like I stated, but the passes were underthrown
