  1. When it rains it pours. If South can take advantage of Maryville mistakes (if they make any) they could maybe pull away late. Actually, I always pick games by 14. And I stick to my guns in times of both brilliance and shame. I also still believe some how, some way USC will win the Nat'l Title (even though its impossible). I like the Trojans by 14 also.
  2. In a year when Appy state beats michigan, Stanford beats USC, Navy beats Notre Dame, there is likely going to be a national championship matchup of Mizzou and WVU, and my Bears are likely going to miss the playoffs a year after going to the super bowl, I have begun to expect the unexpected. I like South big in this one. By 14 atleast. (If i'm right i'm a genious, If I'm wrong just consider me the 59th moron to pick against Maryville)
  3. the thing is, if maryville lost, there would be no one to congratulate bc all the south fans would be passed out in disbelief/excitement. We havent been to the semi's since '93, and to beat a nationally ranked 58 straight win team, thats too much to handle
  4. And by "gracious" you mean they will cut South players heads off and then hand them to them. i suppose i misunderstood the meaning of gracious
  5. So much for the humbleness that Maryville fans displayed on this site.
  6. Here is the only word that i can think of to describe a coaching record of 121 wins to nine loses: Ridiculous. Ecspecially in the Knoxville area.
  7. For informational purposes only, I know Carters record for the past 3 years stands at 33-5. Obviously Quarles last 3 years stands at 43-0. I can't seem to remember the record of the '04 South team though.
  8. Here's what may become an intriguing question: I have no idea how many years GQ has been at Maryville, or what the program was like when he was handed the reigns, but I wonder how Stacy Carters record through 4 years compares with GQ's record through four years as a head coach? I know when Carter took over at South they were a 5 to 6 win team. And he has done alot to raise the program to where it is today. That being said I have no idea the tradition at Maryville dating back to the 1990's and so on. If one of the Red Rebel fans could help me out I would be interested to see how they compare. Another question: Who does more with what he has? Everyone says NET isn't very fertile for atheletes, right? Does that mean that Carter does more with less? Or does Quarles get every ounce of effort from every player? Lets just try to be as non-egocentric as possible when answering.
  9. The last time I saw Maryville play was 2006 at home against Alcoa. A rather close contest until Tyler Maples ran wild in the secondary. I have seen South on multiple occasions and I am continually impressed with the poise and grittiness of Phillips. He takes each snap like it is his last. I have seen Maryville beat Memphis Melrose on a couple of occasions on the turf @ MTSU, enough so to know that Maryville will play a polished game. Mental mistakes will be avoided, but how can anyone predict which way the turnover battle will go? If South wins the turnovers I think they stay in the game because of it, but I have seen Maryville play to many games to predict they'll give the ball up. I think this one will remain close. I don't really think South has put together its two best halfs yet. I hope South plays to their potential in this one, I'm hoping for a nail biter.
  10. metback, I'm not accusing those in Blount county of not giving South a chance, I'm saying the opening pages all talk about how Maryville should kill South, and how Maryville has faired in past semi-final games against teams that dominate region one. I realize Maryville eats their fair share of humble pie. I just don't think people (from where ever they may come from) should say that either team stands 0% chance of winning this game.
  11. I get on here and read the first 19 pages of this thread and 95% of the material relevant to this game speaks of how South would not/could not even play with Maryville if they wanted to. Let it be known that praises should be given to Maryville and George Quarles for not only what theyv'e done for East Tennessee but also for the state of Tennessee as a whole as far as respect and recognition is concerned. But take into consideration what a fickle fruit this game of football can be. September 1, 2007. Appalachian State 34 Michigan 32. Enough said. Appy State winning in the big house? Not in a million years. Appy State blocking a FG to win, one play after Chad Henne hit a streaking Mario Manningham down the sideline with :06 seconds left on the clock, to put the Wolverines in field goal position and seemingly save them from humiliation, impossible right? Well, obviously not, because it happened. Sept. 15, 2007 & October 20, 2007. The University of Tennesse gets beaten by Florida and Alabama by a combined score of 100-37. Six weeks later the Volunteers are in position to win a SEC championship that not even the "experts" at ESPN saw coming. Not to mention, these same Vols that used a defensive linemens facemask (to block a game-winning OT field goal), seven TD passes (a school record, by a QB that everyone seems to hate), and two players who combined to have 35 tackles between them all adding up to beat a mediocre Kentucky team by 2 points in a game that lasted 5 hours. November 24, 2007. New England Patriots 31, Philadelphia Eagles 28. Philly dominates 50 minutes of a 60 minute football game with some guy named Jay Feely at QB. Wait, who? The Eagles entered the game 23 point underdogs and seemed poised to upset the apple of the NFL's eye: Spygate 2007. No the Eagles didn't win, and yes the Patriots did win, and will do so until Billicheck has a 4th ring on his errogant finger. But someone tell me they saw that kind of performance from the McNabbless Eagles......thats right, no one did. Though I may be biased considering I was raised by a father who lived and breathed the religion that has become Sullivan South Football, I believe stranger things have happened. You can say that South is a one man team, and ole GQ can prep his Red Rebels to defend one player all you want. But don't be suprised if you find your self in Maryville on Friday night, sitting in the bleachers wathcing a suprisingly tight ballgame, and thinking to yourself: "man, i really didn't see this coming." To which you can respond to yourself: "I guess vol2010 told me so." And i'll precede to pat myself on the back. I reuse to admit that my Runnin Rebels are beat until they play 48 minutes of football that they so derservingly get to play. And i refuse to listen to anyone who tails me otherwise, unless that person also predicted Appy State would beat Michigan, Ainge would throw 7 TD passes in a single game, and that Tennessee would go to the SEC championship rallied behind a freshman All-American. Good luck to both sets of Rebels. Safe travels and safe football to all, and to all a goodnight.
  12. “ Outlined against a blue-gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are: Phillips, Fletcher, Collins and Harlass. They formed the crest of the Pactolus cyclone before which another fighting 5-Rivers team was swept over the precipice at Death Valley this blustery cold autumn night as 10,000 spectators peered down upon the bewildering panorama spread out upon the green plain below." So what if the pride of Powell wants to get on here and pat himself and his region on the back. I'm a proud region one football product now living in region two, so I face these egocentric views every Friday night for 15 weeks every autumn. Praises be to region two and all their state titles, not only for their excellent representation of East Tennessee but also for the speed and finess with which they play the game. Region two may have the skill advantage, but one thing you can bet on is that in late November in Death Valley, or any region one school for that matter, theres gonna be 48 minutes of football that more closely represents a 15-round titile bout than a football game. Good luck to both teams, come out swinging and leave it all of the field. Every Friday from here on out may be your last oppurtunity to do so.
  13. Let me the first to thank you for clearly displaying your intelligence in this post. "Huh, what?" Go ahead and stop Phillips and Fletcher and South will toast you on the edge with any wideout who is open. Take your pick. Pick your poison because Greeneville will be unable to stop both. The fact that Greeneville won the first meeting in September is not helping their effort this time around. Anyone knows its always harder to beat a team twice than only once. Take a look your chat room name. '07devilsturnaround". Greeneville hasn't been the same in years and South is a program that is beginning to flex its muscle. I like South in this one by atleast 14. "Huh, what?" I feel stupid even quoting that.
  14. I agree that recruiting isn't there biggest problem (but player development may be). Phillips is a dual threat QB, and UT is a 'power I' establish the run first type of offense. But take a second to consider the past, I remember a certain dual threat QB at the University of Tennessee who steped in after some guy named Peyton Manning graduated and led UT to a national title. But this is all non-sense b/c this is a Geeneville/South thread. Good luck to the Rebels. Win a state title and make all the Good ole boys proud.
