  1. It’s Baylor-McCallie week with the Blue Tornado prevailing in basketball Friday night and the Red Raider wrestlers look to turn the tables on McCallie today at 5 p.m. in the McCallie gym. An overflow crowd is expected as Baylor is led by state champs Ryan Parker (3), Michael Murphy (3) and Cooper Reiniche, while Will Patton won a state title for McCallie last year. Old wrestlers never die they just come out of the woodwork for this match, meet for lunch or dinner, compare lineups and talk about when they wrestled and walked out on the squared circle for the first time with 1500 screaming fans yelling for or against them. There are not many sporting events which can compare to this one-on-one legal combat for teenagers and will live to tell their kids and grand kids about the day they had their hand raised victorious in a Baylor-McCallie match. 2. The region wrestling dual title came down to one match, but it wasn’t the last one. Two rich-in-tradition programs (a combined 12 state dual and traditional titles) and undefeated this season in region play went at it Thursday night with host Notre Dame edging East Ridge, 42-36, and advances to the A-AA state duals next weekend in Franklin at the Williamson Co. Expo Center. With the match starting at 106 pounds, the Irish sprinted to a 27-6 lead heading to the 145 pound match. Key Match: In the best match of the night, Irish sophomore defeated John Williams, 5-3, for a 30-6 lead only to have the Pioneers have four pins and a forfeit win in the final five matches to pull within six. Notre Dame’s Alex Spraker got the opening takedown and led 2-1 after one period and 3-1 after two. Spraker gained a takedown to start the third period and Williams countered with a reverse but couldn’t turn his opponent for back points If Williams had won, and the Pioneers went on to win those final five matches, the dual would have been tied at 42 and East Ridge would have won on tie breaker criteria and advanced to the state. “I knew the importance of that match at the time and we gave it our all and that’s all a coach can ask for,†said East Ridge coach Chris Bird as both wrestlers had several opportunities for takedowns, but each was able to counter well. “Prior to the match, I thought Notre Dame would be favored in eight matches and six for us and we had to steal one. And hats off to Notre Dame as they wrestled well.†Notre Dame first year head coach Rocco Mansueto said,†I am most proud of the maturity our guys have shown this season as mental maturity has to come first.†Notre Dame 42, East Ridge 36 106 – Cade Holloway (ND) pinned Kortney Vanders, 2:43 … ND, 6-0 113 – Grant Speer (ND) pinned Jesus Baltizar, 1:22 … ND, 12-0 120 – Kashawn Casey (ER) pinned Matthew Shelton, :47 … ND, 12-6 126 – Camden Dickens (ND) pinned Oscar Jiminez, 3:10 … ND , 18-6 132 – Luke Mullin (ND) pinned Jorge Gil,1:04 ,,, ND, 24-6 138 – Ned Warwick (ND) dec. 15. Chattanooga and Golf Has Lost Another Oehmig Henry King Oehmig Passed Away Saturday (May 23) It was a classic Father’ Day golf picture. No, not Jack and Arnie and their kids relaxing at Augusta National with the Dogwoods blooming. But the Oehmig men – Lew, the family patriarch, with his youngest son, King, and his then two grade school-age sons Henry and John, all crowded into, what else, a golf cart and donning that Oehmig glasses look – round, turtle shell-colored eye wear – so distinct to the long time Lookout Mountain links family. Long known for its well-designed Sunday feature photos and most likely the idea of former sports editor Sam Woolwine, this one graced the front of the Lifestyle Father’ Day edition of the Chattanooga Free Press thirtysomething years ago. And now just shy of four weeks prior to Father’s Day 2015 and those young Oehmig boys now adults lost Lew, their grandfather in 2002 and now King, their dad, this past Saturday. Passed away due to an apparent heart attack while fishing in north Georgia, Oehmig, 63, leaves behind an impressive legacy as golfer, preacher and most importantly husband, father and friend to many. Raised at the Lookout Mountain Playground and numerous area golf courses in the 1950s and 60s, Oehmig played all the sports under the watchful eye of coach Buck Stamps from rec football and basketball to Lookout Mountain Little Boys Baseball, all the while knowing his trusty 3-wood, pitching wedge and putter were his tickets to long term sports success. He honed his skills well enough to earn all-Mid-South golfing honors at Baylor School (’69) and later two-time team captain at Virginia (’73), his dad’s alma mater, in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference. But he made his mark as a golf coach at Baylor in a dozen years – 21 combined (boys and girls) state championships and Southern and national accolades - before turning the program over to current coach Gary Partrick. He also served as the golf coach at The University of the South and was on the committee which led the way for the re-design of the Sewanee 9-hole on campus golf course. And of all the honors and awards he has received, maybe one of the most cherished came three weeks ago (May3) as he was inducted into the Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame joining his dad, a charter member in 1991. Yet, one of his great stories in the past couple of years wasn’t about a Baylor or UVa winning rally on the back nine, but what he learned from his dad away from the 18 holes. In the summer months in the mid 1960s, Mr. Oehmig would drop his son off at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club most every week day morning on the way to work and pick him up at the end the day headed for home. “One day, I had had a bad day on the course and wasn’t up to any small talk or looking to help friend or foe, but what I learned that day was priceless," said Oehmig who was a founding board member of Chattanooga Habitat for Humanity in the early 1990s. “As we were leaving the Country Club parking lot my dad offered a ride home to a few of the workers." Not just a ride down the street to the nearest bus stop and ‘you can get home from there’, but Mr. Oehmig went out of his way to take them to their homes wherever that was in the city. “I’ll never forget that genuine kindness my dad showed many times to others when no one was watching.†While the son has the aforementioned coaching titles and tourneys won – including Signal Mountain Invite and a couple of member-guest Swing Dings – it’s the memories of a man, gracious in victory and defeat and kind to one and all. And the apple didn’t fall far from the family tree. Contact B.B. Branton at william.branton@comcast.net
  16. Maddox Bandy of GPS has a national championship with her mother and coach Meg Bandy and now a state doubles title with Jenna Thorstensen. The Bruisers duo rallied to defeat Baylor’s Lilly Mooney-Lauren Carelli, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to win the TSSAA D-II AA championship in the final day of Spring Fling XXII. “After we lost that first set we knew we had to calm down and we would be fine,†said Bandy. “We get along real well, have the exact same personality and know each other’s game so well,†Thorstensen stated. “We know if we put our heads together and focus no one can beat us.†Asked about the difference between a state and national championships Bandy said, “today we were playing for our school which is so important and when my mother and I were competing in the mother-daughter clay court nationals, it was more for ourselves seeking a USTA national title.†A Bad Omen??: A TSSAA official accidently posted Mooney and Carelli as doubles winners at 6-2, 6-0 on the big display brackets while the D-II match was still in progress. The official mistakenly took the score (6-2 6-0) from the D-I AA girls doubles match with Christian Academy of Knoxville who defeated Boyd Buchanan and posted it on the D-II AA bracket. The correct team and score was changed soon after GPS won. In D-II AA singles, Baylor sophomore Drew Hawkins didn’t lose a set in three matches, including a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Mackenzie Philips of Brentwood Academy. Baylor has claimed singles titles four out of the past five years; Hawkins (2015), Samantha Caswell (2012-13) and Sonja Brkovic (2011). D-II AA Boys Doubles: In what was an excellent college-level match, Spencer Richey and Michael Apple of Memphis University School needed three sets to defeat Baylor’s Jack Gray and Chad Woodham, 6-4, 6-7 (11-9), 6-3 for their third straight state crown. Gray and Woodham faced four match points in the second set tiebreaker beginning at 3-6, evened it at 6-6 and 9-9 before winning, 11-9. “We just kept fighting in that tiebreaker when we were down all those match points,†said Woodham. Prior to the tie-breaker, the Baylor duo had four set points at 6-5, 40-0, but MUS won four straight points to force the tie-breaker. In the third set, MUS gained two breaks and held serve to go up 3-0, but Baylor battled back to gain two breaks themselves and even it at 3-3. But MUS broke the Red Raiders in the all-important seventh game for a 4-3 lead followed by holding serve and gained a fourth break of the set to close it out at 6-3. D-II AA Boys Singles: MBA’s George Harwell defeated McCallie’s Cody Gubin, 6-3, 6-4. Harwell is the first MBA state singles champion since Bill Cherry won three in 1986-87-89. D-I A-AA Girls Doubles: Allison Ivey-Elise DeNicola of Christian Academy of Knoxville defeated Katie DeLay-Makenna Thomas of Boyd Buchanan, 6-2, 6-0. DeLay reached the state semis in singles in 2014. D-I A-AA Boys’ Singles: Jacob Lorino (Knox. Catholic) defeated Hixson’s Alex Condra, 6-3, 6-0. “I was not expecting to do this well (reach the finals) in the tournament so to play for the championship was great,†said Condra who beat 2014 singles semifinalist Dalton Young in this year’s first round followed by a 6-1, 6-4 triumph against Isaiah Polk (Page HS). 2015 Spring Fling Tennis Singles and Doubles Singles: D-I A-AA Boys: Jacob Lorino (Knox. 17. Notre Dame Girls Claim State Net Title Second Title in Four Years The state tennis championship was on the line, but for a fleeting moment, senior Sarah Joyce thought back to her freshman year as she and Danika Dorris trailed 3-4 at No.1 doubles against Christian Academy of Knoxville. As was the case today, the state title was on the line. “Today we had just lost our serve to go down 3-4 and I remembered three years ago Danika and I were in the same situation,†said Joyce. And Joyce and today’s partner Sarah Faith Ingell are glad history does repeat itself as the Irish duo rallied to win the final five games at No.1 and as the last Greeneville shot sailed long an Irish tennis celebration began with a 4-2 state finals win. “Sarah and I have played well together all year and we were definitely running on adrenalin those last few games,†Joyce stated with a smile and a sigh of relief. Improving to 15-2, Notre Dame has been in the finals three of the past four years with a win in 2012 and a runner-up finish to CAK in 2014. “When I saw that last ball in the air I said to myself, ’please go out,’†said Ingell with a smile. And it did. Singles was a battle as the Irish led 3-2 heading into doubles and one point shy of a title. Notre Dame claimed wins at Nos. 2-3-5 from Ingell, Mary Margret Haywood and Bowie Strozak, while Greeneville won at No.1 with Ellie Pectol and Bailey Snelson at No.4. Three of the five were three setters. In the No.1 doubles, Joyce and Ingell took a quick 2-0 lead, but then trailed 3-4 before winning the last five for title. “I am exhausted and I didn’t even hit a ball today,†said Notre Dame coach Nancy Fox as she held the championship coaches plaque. “Sarah and Sarah Faith played out of their minds those last three games.†Assistant coach Gary McIntyre commented,†They (Sarah and Sarah Faith) were really dialed in and serious in that tough doubles final. You could see it in their faces.†And after the last ball sailed long past the baseline they had the smiling faces of champions once again. Notes: State Doubles Thursday … Joyce and Ingell will put their team medals aside tomorrow and play a quarterfinal doubles match at 1:30 p.m. EDT against Abby Bruff-Maddie King of Union City … on the boys side, senior Charles Jabaley opens singles play at 1 p.m. EDT against Jacob Lorino (Knox. 18. Spring Fling Tennis: Lausanne Pulls Out of D-II A First Team Tennis Forfeit in Spring Fling History MURFREESBORO - The NFL has its Deflategate with air taken out of the footballs and now TSSAA is faced with its own version of air out of tennis balls as for the first time in Spring Fling history a school has pulled out of the state tennis championship. Tuesday morning here at Old Fort Park Tennis Complex two-time defending D-II A boys champion Knox Webb was prepared for its semifinal match. But Lausanne Collegiate School (Memphis) decided not to send its boys team to mid-Tennessee for a once-in-a-lifetime shot at a state crown - no current seniors were on the 2009 state runner-up team - thus forfeiting the semifinal match and Webb advanced to Wednesday’s final which they won 4-0 against Univ. School of Jackson. The Scenario: After some discussion between parents and Lausanne school officials, some starting players were not going to play due to having exams today and Tuesday. Even after the abovementioned starters passed on competing in the state tourney, the team still had the minimum four players - two regulars and two alternates – allowed by TSSAA rules to compete in the tournament. According to TSSAA executive director Bernard Childers, Lausanne Athletics director Troy Baker informed him Monday that the Memphis-based team would not attend Spring Fling XXII. “Troy told me that it came down to the four players who were going to drive to Murfreesboro thought that they would not be competitive so they decided to forfeit,†said Childers via phone Tuesday afternoon. “Our guys were ready to play in the semis and it was disappointing to learn prior to our match that Lausanne had forfeited,†said Webb coach Jimmy Pitkanen. A call and an e-mail with a few questions were not returned by the Lausanne athletics director and calls to two other school offiicials were also not returned as of Wednesday night. State Tennis Format: The D-II A format is five singles and two doubles and a team can compete with four players. A few questions that this reporter would have wanted to ask school officials. When did the parents decide that their sons were staying in Memphis to take exams and not playing in the state tournament? If their decision was made a few weeks ago they could have informed school officials of the decision and given the school more time to find at least five players or talk with TSSAA to see if the region runner-up could compete. What was the time frame of the parents informing the school? If the four players who were, at first planning to compete, and were able to work through an exams-state tournament schedule, then why couldn’t the ones who decided to stay home, ask the school for the same re-scheduling of exams? So many players and teams in the past have worked around exams, graduation and Spring Fling to make it all work with just a little planning. This reporter hopes for a response from school officials, but it appears they have circled the wagons and taken their tennis ball and gone home. What a shame. Contact B.B. 19. Spring Fling Tennis – Day II: Baylor Girls are a Five-Peat Baylor Boys Take Second MURFREESBORO - For Baylor girls coach Dustin Kane, it’s a new group of talented players every four years ready to make their mark on the prep tennis world. Wednesday afternoon at the Old Fort Park Tennis Complex, the young - no seniors, only one junior in the top six - but talented Red Raiders, defeated Hutchison, 4-1, to claim the school’s fifth straight state title and ninth overall since 1993. Prior to the girls’ final, MUS edged Baylor, 4-0, for the D-II AA boys’ crown. “I told the girls before the match that we have been preparing for a run at a state title since August and go out and let the preparation take over today,†said Kane whose team is 13-5. Coach Kane compares this team to the 2011 Baylor squad led by four freshmen. “We were young in 2011 with four freshmen and had lost to GPS in the state finals in 2010,†Kane stated. That quartet of Samantha Caswell, Harper Caswell, Maggie Crumbliss and McCall Morgan won four straight Spring Fling titles (2011-12-13-14), four Chattanooga crowns and a trio of DecorTurf championships. But today, the spotlight is on the current group of players is led by sophomore Drew Hawkins at No.1 singles with a 13-4 record. The Raiders have two eighth graders - Lauren Carelli and Landie McBrayer - two freshmen - Lilly Mooney and Presley Thomas - and two sophomores - Drew Hawkins and Ashton Jenne playing singles while junior Hannah Kleban was the veteran playing doubles. Baylor won the doubles point, followed by singles wins from Hawkins, Ashton Jenne and Presley Thomas for the title. State Record: Knox. Webb (D-II A) and Ravenwood (D-I AAA) both won championships today and are current co-holders of the state record at six straight. MUS Defeated Baylor, 4-0 MUS made it a three-peat with a 4-0 win against Baylor for the D-II AA boys’ title. At least four players on the court will play college tennis.
