  1. I am curious about the flow of wrestlers each program has. We hear talk about wrestlers quitting as seniors, because old school coaches don't allow wrestleoffs, because the school or the football coach doesn't support the program monetarily or with status....we hear about "feeder " schools into HS on the supply side, kids who want to be successful as athletes not based on their size, about good/great coaches as a draw, and scouring the hallways to complete a team....would love to hear the real wrestlingpros respond...uh, that would be most all of you!
  2. I agree with all, I will say Zeno got dragged into this, and is a great fellow and great wrestler...as a freshman, he is doing great! Reed Gibbs is a very talented wrestler who has fought rib injuries most of the year, and will go at 130 this weekend..that is why he is not rated, under the radar..we will wish him and Trey the best...
  3. GHouse, thanks again for keeping the rankings, and for your help on the rules and inner workings of our organizations! It has been great fun...can't wait for this weekend. For some fun, and to motivate the ones with targets on their backs, and those who "sneak" in for the wins, or those who are pre-destined to win, have a look on www.tennesseewrestling.com under rankings, click the "choose state champion",and voteor pull up the survey of who will win each weight....have to log on, but it is a nice presentation and fun... something to do!
  4. wow, here most wrestlers can't even eat, and there are more blogs about food than wrestling! i personally am not opposed to the host school making a little, or tssaa for that matter...as is the case with me and mine, i'll go somewhere else, not eat, or graze on the tasteless gruel that tey have there...wrestlers are resourceful by nature...sneak it in, cal it a day..
  5. I like the approach that some or ample time is allowed to move toward a wrestling move, while "looking" like you are at risk...still, it is the judgment of the ref, and the experience and maybe the acquired confidence of the ref to make the consistent call irrespective of the way the match is playing out...what seems to happen is an early opinion is formed of who looks like they are wrestling better and this thread is apparent for the rest of the match.. except for the 1/2 who arevery goodrefs..anyway, my thought is don't let penalty points decide the match..I also say reluctantly if the ref makes a mistake on a penalty point early the good ones lean the other way later in the match..a lot seems to be with the impression of who is the aggressor..anyway, much to do about nothing, if a wrestler feels that they are vulnerable to any suspect calls, then my thought and advice is to plan on winning by 3 points to take human error out, and this should take out excuses as well, and set up for an aggressive style as well...
  6. Rigger101, thank you for your service as well! Patrick, good luck, very proud of you, you sing dang well, and you and your family should be very proud. Had a friend just return on a morale tour and to a man everyone wants to finish the job, and the cooperation, both overt (sunni leaders) and covert(at night folks are sneaking out to tell our soldiers where the bad guys are) is improving dramatically. Do you know Barton Tate from AL class of 05 or 06? If your dad reads this, please ask him for me. Be safe!
  7. This is great stuff! Thanks for the info! I guess it comes down to the ref, and the "eyes of the beholder", whether the takedown on the edge happens or not, or if the "well-coached" wrestler is avoiding a takedown by squirming off of the mat (as opposed to the call of fleeing). When it does come down to the ref, we all know they are trying, and many factors would come to play (long day, distracted, reacting to coaches, level of experience, confidence, being decisive, etc.) . What I hate to see is matches decided by penalty points for these moving/lack of moving violations, and it looks even worse when it is inconsistent mat-to-mat. One match I saw at the D2 duals was basically decided by two stalling points (didn't have a dog in that fight, don't remeber the details). Having said all of this, my hat is off to all of the refs, and as I say, we overlook "bad" calls when they are in our favor.
  8. Is Mr Dunning part of the Dunning wrestling family from Nashville? once again, great work for both of them!
  9. Great work, I am sure he is doing well up there, proud for him!
  10. Great work by David! I almost think the the process of trying to be a great wrestler, all of the effort involved, is as important as winning in the grand scheme of things. There always seems to be someone around the corner who is a little better, no matter which sport, but there may be noone around the corner that worked harder at it. In any case, I am impressed with any wrestler for a lot of reasons, and it can only help when life becomes less easy.
  11. I will enjoy watching Bailey wrestle at state, good luck for the fourth, and would like to shake his hand to congratulate him for his wrestling and appointment. My good friend Dan Mullins was the NCAA champ while at Navy, probably in the same general weight class that Bailey would be, so I am hoping de ja vous all over again!
  12. GHouse, I don't know the weight classes in college, but he looks like he has more growing to do, and will probably focus on football, as he dropped 25-30 pounds to wrestle this year. My mental image of a 215(approx)in college is a buffed out, grown up 189 in HS
  13. The seeds have been determined as of today. Any official/unofficial info available?
  14. Can someone please explain the mechanics of stalling in hs wrestling? Also, why does a well-coached wrestler get the benefit of the doubt when taken down on the edge and in the same match the opponent might be called for fleeing the mat? Lastly, when two refs are calling a match, and the lead ref is " a little less competent", and the second ref overrides him, is this better or worse than the randomness of bad calls? (also, sometimes, the spontanious nature of the call gets lost with the "look" each gives the other). Please respond, thanks!
  15. I know you are very proud, and I am sure he has earned every win. Kudos to the practice room, it is a good thing where you have great partners to develop great athleticism! Curious, how many wrestlers does each program have? Had a talk with a coach about this, and as wrestling is a big-time commitment, the culture of a program is important in terms of burnout, feeder schools, interest, and generally how well the school is doing. Any thoughts?
  16. Congratulations to Jubari Tuani at BA (215) for accepting an appointment to Annapolis today! He will likely play football as well, and has a 3.75 grade point as well as being a top-notch fellow! I understand there are other senior wrestlers that were appointed as well. Who are they?
